[RESOLVED] unable to enter recovery mode :( - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks,
I started out with a 4.0.4 Xperia Arc that was upgraded through the PC companion utility. Starting with these instructions,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27864948&postcount=31
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27864968&postcount=32
I was able to root my phone as well as unlock the bootloader. The X-Parts application has been installed, but I've been unable to enter recovery mode. The best I've been able to get is a "Safe Mode", though I'm not sure what it means.
Does anyone have links to download the latest recovery.img file? I want to try fastbooting it. Or is there something else I could try?

If you've unlocked the boot loader X-Parts isn't needed. Flash a kernel that has CWM, which you'll find in the dev section.

Any suggestions? The only reason I unlocked/rooted the phone was to get a fast dialer app. The stock 4.0.4 is too slow for my tastes.

Read about the features of each and pick one.

I think you stil have locked bootloader, but phone might be rooted. You need cwm recovery from market. First after root had instal recovery, if its done then go play/market and download cwm recovery and then xparts. For me xparts says that whitout cwm it not work.

I just installed "ROM Manager" (v5.0.2.1) from the Market. It was the top result when I searched for "CWM recovery". On opening it, I click the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" option. It asks me to confirm my phone model as "LT15i" which I do. Then a message comes up,
"LT15i does not have an officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet. Have you installed a ClockworkMod based recovery manually?" with a Yes/No option.
What should I try next?
-chronodekar

did you download from market xparts? To it, and in xparts have to chose what recovery had you flashed. Xparts dont ron correctly if you dont have cwm from market- very annoing after every rom changes to download these two thing

I've been searching for some time, but I cannot find this "cwm" in the android market/play store.
Some good news is that I manged to solve my problem. In hindsight, it looks like x-parts is horrible or useless at downloading CWM from wherever it downloads it. Some searching led me to this blog,
http://xperiadev.wordpress.com/guidelines-xperia/rooting-cwmrecovery/
The guy there has helpfully given a non-market or downloadable link to the CWM-installer. I transferred that to my phone via my laptop's bluetooth connect and wonder-of-wonders it worked ! I was FINALLY able to boot into the recovery mood.
Even better, that blue LED light everyone talks about? That finally began to appear too.
Thanks for all the assistance folks!

3. Run recovery.bat from archive
4. Press any key when asked
5. That's all. You've got CWM.
To Root
0. Download lastest Superuser and su here
1. Put Superuser and su in the root of SD card
2. Go to CWM and install zips
3. Now rooted
Tnx to alquez for recovery port
CWM installed just fine , however the root did not happen inspite of installing both the zip files via the recovery cwm! Still an S-ON
I'd recommed rooting through HTC Super tool.

Root and S-ON are not the same.
I did the first part, worked like a charm, thanks!
As far as the second portion, though, how exactly do I "Go" to CWM? Do you just mean the Manager that I download from the Market? Or how do I boot to CWM? This is all very different from my Nook Color.
EDIT:
Disregard. I figured it out. I will return if I have an updates. Thanks again.
EDIT2:
The Root portion does not work. I ran both of the zip files, but my phone is still not rooted. If I access CM in the phone it states that the phone is not rooted and needs to be in order to perform such a task.
try to find out, is there su app in system\bin?
Download this to your sd
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Reboot into cwm then choose install zip from SD then choose zip.
Point it to the file you downloaded
When done click back then reboot.
That should be you rooted.
Worked great for me, thank you!
Rooted and installed custom rom, finally!
Push "Thanks" button, not just say it)

Can you elaborate on what you did to answer your own question?
I have the same one. I don't understand what's meant by "Go to CWM" or "reboot into CWM". In fact, I don't even understand what CWM is.
Is that just ClockworkMod? If so, what's the reason for downloading it from the links people post, as opposed to simply downloading it from the Market for free?
I power off my device, and then hold volume DOWN and power, and I get into some non-graphical program (not even sure what you call it), but there doesn't seem to be any option to install anything from a .zip on the SD card.
I'm confused

that non graphical program is called the bootloader, clockworkmod is a recovery. so once youve booted into your bootloader use the volume buttons and power to select stuff. go to recovery and push power. that will bring you into clockworkmod recovery

[Q] Can't get into recovery

Hi everyone!
First of all, thank you for taking the time to read this!
I have tried to do research on my problem but can't solve it...
The problem is that i can't get into recovery to backup my stock rom.
Specs: HTC Wildfire S, marvel A510e, S-on, Bootloader unlocked, Rooted, Radio-7.54.39.28M, Andriod 2.3.5, HTC sence: 2.1, Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.0.2.8, Super SU.
I followed the guide: "How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON"on Andriod forums by CafeKampuchia, thumbs up for him, It got me this far but, now I want to do the thing for which I rooted my phone in the first place: Installing a costum ROM. Therefore I want to backup my stock ROM.
When I open in HBOOT (1.09.0099) and select recovery, the phone reboots and i see the HTC screen, this disappears after 2 sec and my screen turns black... (phone is still on beceause the buttons on the bottom are lighted.)
When I boot the normal way and try to boot into recovery trough CWM ROM manager same thing happen. Also flashed this recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229 Same thing happed...
So how can i backup my stock rom?
Many thanks in advantage!

I just reflashed my stockrom and flashed the following recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229

Hello!
We have already faced this problem. We cannot find the reason why on some devices CWM is not working. It is characteristic for some devices. The decision is not found yet. We used all known methods for today, and all CWM versions (5.0.2.6 & 5.0.2.8), but are not present result.

You might try placing update zip on root of your sdcard and choose apply update from sdcard.
Too bad it doesn't have reinstall packages.

[Q] Problem Installing any Recovery.

Hi all it's the first time I post here because it's the first time i need to post here
You are all fantastic guys thanks for all!
Ok I got my HTC Wildfire S Europe unbranded, S-ON, Bootloader unlocked via HTCdev.
I can't install ANY recovery on it.
Here's what i've tried:
- Putting P**.img in sdcard. The sd has been firstly not goldcard and then i have "goldcarded" it.
- Flash the recovery by fastboot (fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img)
Everytime i try to flash the operation comes successful but, when I try to boot to recovery, it stucks forever on HTC Logo.
What do I make wrong?
I can't install any rom because everyone comes in .zip ...
Root your phone, install Rom manager from the play store and select "Download Clockworkmod Recovery" then "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery"
SOunds like the issue I had, I couldn't install it either, until someone pointed out that I needed a CDMA version of the recovery (CWM).
http://download.clockworkmod.com/rec....8-marvelc.img
Try that. My new issue is that it freezes on CWM< maybe you won't have this issue, let me know.

Try that. Install using fast boot if you can't install it in hboot.
It's CWM 4.0X.X (forgot exact numbers)
It worked for me, my phone no longer freezes and I was able to install roms without any issues.
It correctly flashed but when I boot into recovery it stucks as always at HTC Logo.
But why?
I would contact this guy.

@OP - Try alquez's CWM recovery.
Here: http://www.mediafire.com/?p2p88udo32m9xcg
Place the zip in the root of your SD Card, reboot into bootloader by pressing Vol + and Power, let it scan..... bla bla bla it will install.
Then enter Recovery and see if that works. That's the only way I see possible. Or try the above recovery.
Good luck!
I have alredy tried alquez's recovery.
I remember that firstly it said "Cid Error" then after i goldcarded my sdcard it said "Main Version is Older" and it didn't install.
BTW the main reason I'd like to flash a recovery is that I'd like to root again the phone after the last update. The only method I've seen is to flash root.zip via cwm because other one-click programs no longer works.
It looks like it's a damned phone...

[Q] Phone wont go into CWM recovery..

Hey there. I am trying to get my phone to run cwm. I tried both the touch image and the image that comes with the htc one v toolkit. Fastboot installs it no problems but when I try to go to recovery either by adb command or through the phone direct I get the "This build of HTC is not be distributed" message when I rooted the phone a while back but it just hangs there..
Please help. I really dont like having to hold down the power button for 10+ seconds praying it wont brick.
P.S. I did try to install CWM through the normal way on the play store. I thought it would work cause it detected my phone right and didnt warn me. SU did tell me it was doing something in some .sh file. I uninstalled cwm before trying the fastboot methods.
John
I suggest using the "all-in-one" tool from the Development Thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1676686
and then use "boot into recovery"
I finally got it to work by using TWRP. had to find one that specifically said CDMA/Virgin Mobile.
Thanks for your help.

[Q] Custom recovery

I Keep trying to install custom recovery, but none of the methods I found work. these arch told me to use goo manager, but that didn't work. My friend said to use Clockwork or Cyanogens but clockwork did not work, and I can't find cyanogen. please tell me how you installed your custom recovery, because I'm afraid to do anything else after rooting
Now my friend is saying because neither of those work, rooting was a waste (which I don't believe), but what do you guys think?
Installing TWRP can take a few tries. Took me about a half an hour to get my tablet to take to the custom recovery. Be sure to flash 2.6.3 as 2.7 doesn't yet work. Flash via the latest Odin as well.

Make sure you reboot your device and go directly into your custom recovery (volume up + home+ power)

You only flash recoveries through Odin or via ADB. Any other way will have a very high risk of screwing something up. Also as long as you can get into download mode you can get the stock image from sammobile and flash via Odin.
