1. Download this
2. Connect your device to PC via USB with usb debug mode
3. Run recovery.bat from archive
4. Press any key when asked
5. That's all. You've got CWM.
To Root
0. Download lastest Superuser and su here
1. Put Superuser and su in the root of SD card
2. Go to CWM and install zips
3. Now rooted
Tnx to alquez for recovery port

CWM installed just fine , however the root did not happen inspite of installing both the zip files via the recovery cwm! Still an S-ON

I'd recommed rooting through HTC Super tool.

Root and S-ON are not the same.

I did the first part, worked like a charm, thanks!
As far as the second portion, though, how exactly do I "Go" to CWM? Do you just mean the Manager that I download from the Market? Or how do I boot to CWM? This is all very different from my Nook Color.
EDIT:
Disregard. I figured it out. I will return if I have an updates. Thanks again.
EDIT2:
The Root portion does not work. I ran both of the zip files, but my phone is still not rooted. If I access CM in the phone it states that the phone is not rooted and needs to be in order to perform such a task.

try to find out, is there su app in system\bin?

Download this to your sd
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Reboot into cwm then choose install zip from SD then choose zip.
Point it to the file you downloaded
When done click back then reboot.
That should be you rooted.

Worked great for me, thank you!
Rooted and installed custom rom, finally!

Push "Thanks" button, not just say it)

Can you elaborate on what you did to answer your own question?
I have the same one. I don't understand what's meant by "Go to CWM" or "reboot into CWM". In fact, I don't even understand what CWM is.
Is that just ClockworkMod? If so, what's the reason for downloading it from the links people post, as opposed to simply downloading it from the Market for free?
I power off my device, and then hold volume DOWN and power, and I get into some non-graphical program (not even sure what you call it), but there doesn't seem to be any option to install anything from a .zip on the SD card.
I'm confused

that non graphical program is called the bootloader, clockworkmod is a recovery. so once youve booted into your bootloader use the volume buttons and power to select stuff. go to recovery and push power. that will bring you into clockworkmod recovery

thank you so much ... worked for me
first i unlocked bootloader from HTCDEV then followed the above simple steps.
worked perfect for me . Now my cell is rooted .

recovery crashes
i just follow this procedure .. after install successfully cwm . after phone got stuck on recovery and screen goes black ... need help

Rooted - Is Recovery Image Required?

Good Morning Guys, I thought I posted this already but I can't find the post now so must of forgot to submit it before I ran out the door for work.
I sucessfully rooted my phone last night and all seems sucessful. I want to put a new rom on it (possibly the new one)
However at the bottom of the instructions I was following it then said download and apply this Recovery Image. What is this about and is this needed?
I read somewhere that it must be a certain recovery image and I am a bit worried about this part so was anyone could point me in the right direction to what recovery image I need to download and instructions how how to do it?
Thanks.
Can anyone help me????
PRETTY PLEASE
I promise to stop bothering you all once I have managed to get a custom rom on once...
You need a custom recovery to be able to flash a ROM. This can be done either by running the last part of the rooting instructions again OR using Fake-Flash (some will say just use ROM Manager but I think it's pants personally)...
Download THIS, rename it to update.zip (not update.zip.zip) and copy this to the root of your SD card. Also copy the ROM you wish to use to the SD card. Then use this to enter the custom recovery to flash a custom ROM (to get to the recovery, turn the Desire on whilst holding down the vol. down button, select recovery from the menu and press power and then when at the red ! screen press power and vol up at the same time and then select 'apply sdcard:update.zip')
or simply download the rom manager from the market its free installl it and then go into it, and at the top you will have a FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY and your current one undeneath, so you click on that It will ask you to confirm your phone and the allow it to access the root and wait till its done and voila and then all you do pretty much is put a rom onto your partitioned sd card (swap0 ext3 256/512/768/1024mb) and Install it via the rom manager
I did say you can use ROM Manager but I think it's **** personally - I prefer to see what I'm doing (and it's a LOT quicker)

but then by using it you get less chance you gonna brick your phone and if your a newbie like me at flashing then you're looking for the easiest way to get things done

HELP ME :-(
Ok I tried following instructions I installed the Recovery Image that went through fine. I used fake-flash with the rom in a zip on the sd card went into recovery fine loaded the fake flash which all worked perfectly. Selected install from zip on sd or what ever it says selected the rom zip file.
Took about 10 minutes cant rember if it said failed but when I rebooted the phone I just ended up with the red triangle and exclmation mark. I did a restore with nandroid (backed up before trying the rom and now its back to how it was.
I got the rom from cookandroid.com using the Official Froyo from OpenDesire.
What am I doing wrong as I am sure its me
Had another go this morning using the same downloaded rom I used last night and worked perfectly this time. After the rom installation it rebooted and of course the radio didn't work as that needed up grading so installed the radio then did a wipe on the phone and its brilliant. Haven't played with it much yet so that is what todays 'TODO List' contains
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Max
Yep, once you start doing it, you will find out that flashing different roms is actually more interesting than using the phone...

NANDROID is included in clockwork recovery which is installed if you root your phone using unrevoked

I feel retarded

OK, this is downright embarrassing, I have linux experience, I have experience unlocking and flashing almost every HTC winmo device, and right now I seriously need a clue on how to flash my evo with damagecontrol.. i believe i already rooted it properly, i come to this conclusion by typing "id" at the terminal on the device and the uid is root. seriously i feel dumb right now.
well if you are rooted all you need to do is put the rom zip on your memory card and then go into recovery..
from there wipe then flash from zip.
from what ive seen soo far, might i have to rename the damagecontrol rom zip to pc36IMG.zip? and to get to the recovery screen just hold vol down and power?

You don't need to rename it. Yes, that is how you get into recovery. If you're using ClockworkMod recovery, then you should select "Install zip from SD card" and then browse to the ROM, then install it. You might need to wipe your data first for it to work properly. Do a nandroid backup first in case something goes wrong.
ROM Manager... works wonders for noobs like us
ok, Maybe i need to see the whole picture in a verifyable way. Just so i can see this thing from the inside out i have some more questions.
1. How do i verify that I have full root access? I am root when i "id" at console.
2. Im assuming NAND is protected storage onboard the phone.. How do i verify I have it unlocked?
3. How do i know the recovery image has been flashed?
Where these questions come from is the fact that I used jiqqaman's OTA simple root witch i think was a big mistake if i was to understand what is actually happening and being done.. so basically after running OTA simple root i have no idea whats been done, or how it was done...
if you used simply root you should be ok.. i rooted my Evo 1st thing the "old way".. not sure how to check if you are fully rooted. maybe someone else can help there.
1st thing you need to do is find the pc36IMG.zip and delete it of remane it.... i did mine root-pc36IMG.zip
then power off the phone..... when its off hold the power button and volume down ( same time) this should give you a white screen while it reads for the pc36 zip... since you remaned it nothing will happen.... after this you should see recovery.. should be the 2nd one...
volume down to highlight it and hit power buttom
the phone should go into recover mode.... from there you should see wipe etc... wipe data and cache then flash rom from zip
dont remane the rom.... volume keys to navigate..
hope this helps
ok, so far so good, but when i go to flash the new rom, I choose install update from SDcard, it then looks for it and cant find it. The rom is on the root of the SD and it's named "DamageControlv3.1.2-deodexed.zip" also trying the ROM manager pops an error of "an error occured while attempting to run privileged commands."
Alright what you need to do is download ROM manager from the market. Once you do that do the "flash clockworkmod recovery" and then once its done click on "reboot into recovery" then you should be able to install the ROM. Hope this helped

well once i had rooted my phone (this was over a month ago) via unrevoked it installed superuser for me... so idk. and it was on the stock ROM
Okay I have no clue what you have and don't have. But a few thoughts, make sure you are choosing install zip from sdcard/choose zip from sdcard and not apply sdcard:update.zip. If you are unsure you have a recovery image flashed, in extras on SimpleRoot there is an option to flash recovery. Other than that not too sure what is wrong.
unrevoke will only give you root and not nand unlocked...,you need to run toast method 2 nand unlock.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
When you boot into recovery (while the phone is off hold volume down and power up) check the top of the screen to see what version hboot you have. If you ran simple root and showing version 0.79.0000 then something went wrong. It should say 0.76.2000

I am having the exact same issue. I get the error message from rom manager as well. And I cannot tether. I flashed some other roms that have had too many bugs to count so I am back at "just rooted" nandroid restore and am getting the same errors. What is the next step?

He mentioned that he ran simple root program not unrevoked and simple root will unlock nand. See my post above to verify if your actually rooted. If hboot version is .79 then you have not unlocked nand.
success, it seems once youve already used simpleroot, it's a PITA to get clockwork on it unless you use the option in extras of simpleroot. Success is mine, although i think i have a few more grey hairs for it. Thanks to all those who helped. And to put out words of advice for any other newbs... when they say wipe, they mean cache, userdata AND DELVIC! If you dont you might crap yourself when the phone goes into boot loop! I know i almost lost it. Thanks again everyone!

[Q] S-off

I have rooted a few evo's for friends(never had probz with any) and was rooting one for a co-worker today and all was well with Unrevoked going smoothly as usual.
I got the message victory or it was a triumph(i forget what it says exactly) and went in for the final reboot and the phone rebooted fully but UNREVOKED got hung up pn waiting for reboot.
I tried this 3 times with same results.
Finally i went into bootloader and saw it WAS S-OFF but there was no superuser and no root access using root checker.
Anyone have any advise? i tried looking this up but saw no other simaler problems.
THANK YOU!
I would just download a known rom with root and flash it.
I have s-off, i feel i am just about there is there anyone who has had the same issues with unrevoked?. i searched google and cant get anything. if i try to go into recovery i get the triangle with exclamation point
just flash a zip with the su binary and superuser apk
if you can't find one i'll make u one (cuz they're rare now)
if you have no recovery, just s-off, flash amon-ra through a pc36img.zip.

ok, so you have no recovery. download the pc36img.zip for amon-ra recovery (it's better than cwm anyways, and will lead to less problems) and name it pc36img.zip (no typos). then put it on the root of your sdcard and boot into bootloader. it should scan your sdcard, and ask to update. hit vol up for yes. then it'll finish and ask to reboot. hit vol down for no. then select recovery. you can find the pc36img.zip here.
as for the actual superuser zip, gimmie 2 seconds...
ok here's the zip. this will place superuser.apk in system/app, place and symlink su in /system/bin, and symlink it to /system/xbin, and also install busybox to /system/xbin. this is written in amend because i'm not good enough at edify yet to write a complex (ok, more than simple) script. so it does need to be flashed with amon-ra. enjoy...

s-off is full root. s-on is either unrooted or half rooted. s is the nand lock security. so when it's off, nand is unlocked. and when it's on, ur locked down....

Try flashing amon _RA again. Place that file on the root of your SD card (not in any folder) and make sure it is the only file with that particular name. Afterwards, shutdown your device and then boot into the bootloader (DOWN volume & power button). After a short pause, a few lines of text should flash across the screen. After that, the bootloader should autodetect the file and prompt you to install it.
posting & replying via the XDA Premium app.
i did just that and i renamed it the exact name plus the .zip at the end. the exact file in the link. re d/l again now
Just download a recovery and flash it i use amon

You have to flash a custom recovery either clockwork mod or amonra recovery. Then go into recovery and install the superuser.zip. In order to do this you have to be s-off. If you are s-on on 2.3.4 there is no current way to root.
My understanding as well that thre isn't a root for gingerbread.
my Dinc
my phone is currently s-off which is good.
That's good then, all you need to do (like a previous poster said) is flash a custom recovery, then flash the superuser zip in that recovery. The easiest way to do this is using rom manager, it's pretty self explanatory. Alternately, you can flash the recovery of your choice in hboot, www.dougpiston.com has recoveries available for download. Then find the superuser zip and "install from SD card" in recovery.

You mean ... there isn't a root for gingerbread ON for HTC phones. The droids are rooted just fine (my wife has a Droid 2 Global with the OTA installed) through a one click for Windows and Linux (Z4ROOT doesn't work anymore though).

There's root/S-OFF for other HTC phones on gingerbread. Look at the unrevoked/revolutionary site. Evo 3D, incredible 2, sensation, are a few HTC phones on gingerbread that can be S-OFFed.

I'm assuming that it's a zip file that you downloaded? It's most likely meant to be flashed in hboot. Rename the file exactly to PB31IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders). To get in to hboot, power the phone off completely, then hold power and volume down. You'll be taken to the hboot screen and it will automatically look for the PB31IMG.zip and ask you to update. Press volume up to confirm.
the file that was downloaded is: recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc.img
---------- Post added at 03:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:14 PM ----------
when i get a few minutes, ill type all the steps ive currently taken and see where the problem lies.
Oh, that's an .img file, I'm not sure what you'd do with that without a custom recovery already. I'd recommend downloading a recovery from www.dougpiston.com or use rom manager.
when i first installed gingerbread onto my device last nice, i downloaded a file that i had to change to PB31IMG.zip. So when i go into my CD card there is a folder called clockworkmod.
In the folder there are 2 files: .settings and .settings 2
Somewhere along the line i think something got screwed up and id like to start from scratch. Would you be willing to walk with me through this thing lol. Youve been such a great help so far. Please let me know. I live in california and im off work at 6 so ill be doing this after work so i dont have to hide the screen every two seconds lol.
Would you take the challange to help me?
Thank you
It sounds like you installed rom manager maybe, or a custom recovery since you have the clockworkmod folder on your SD card. What was the PB31IMG that you tried previously?
Let me know, and I'll subscribe to this thread so I'm notified of new posts, or feel free to pm me. I'm not sure exactly what I'll be up to later but I'll try to respond ASAP. Maybe continue posting in this thread so other people can chime in and help too.

Ok first uninstall rom manager and the superuser app if you have it installed and delete any PB31IMG.zips that are on the root of your sd card. Then download cwm recovery here http://dinc.does-it.net/PB31IMG.zip, place it on the root of your sd (not in any folders). Then download the superuser binary from here http://dinc.does-it.net/su.zip and place it on the root of your sd. Then go to menu, settings, manage applications and make sure fast boot is unchecked. Power off the phone and then boot into hboot by holding vol down and power at the same time. Once in hboot it will automaticly find the recovery and prompt you to press vol up to install. Once installed it will prompt to reboot hit vol down and you will go back to the main hboot screen. Then vol down to recovery and hit the power button. Once in recovery select install zip from sd card and then select the su.zip. It will ask you to confirm select yes. Once installed select reboot phone. Once the phone boots up go to the market and get the superuser app to keep su up to date and allow programs superuser permissions. Install that and then download rom manager from the market so you can keep recovery up to date and make backups. Thats it you should now be rooted.

Hello all, so I unrooted my phone by putting the RUU on my sd card. I want to re-root it now but am having trouble doing it. I've tried using the unrevoked method but it doesn't seem to work. When i got into the bootloader, it just re-installs the stock rom. any ideas?
Btw, I am using a mac if that helps at all.
Are you still s-off?
If so flash clockwork recovery thru hboot as a PB31IMG.zip. (http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=28)
Download and install the superuser app from the market.
Download and install the busybox app from the market, and then install the busybox binaries thru the busybox app.
If you are s-on and on android 2.3.4 you will need to follow this guide to get root and s-off. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400)
cmlusco, i am s-off i believe. when I originally rooted my Dinc about a year ago I ran the unrevoked3 method. I am currently running android 2.3.4 stock sense.
so i just download the latest version of clockwordmod and rename it PB31IMG.zip, put it on my sd card and reboot into the bootloader by turning off and then doing the volumeup + power method?
just checked. it is indeed s-off. so just download the latest clockworkmod, rename to PB31IMG.zip and put it on my sd card and flash through Hboot?

Yes that will get you access to recovery to be able to flash stuff. Then installing the su app and the su binary thru the app will get you root access.
thank you kindly! i will try it out later and let u know if i have any problems

Flash this thru recovery like a rom (http://dinc.does-it.net/SuperUser/SuperUser_3.0.7.zip). Once rebooted open the superuser app hit menu, preferences and scroll to the bottom and tap on su binary to get the newest su binary.
ok thanks. so basically rename that to PB31IMG.zip and flash through hboot?

Yes you could but its better to just go strait to recovery and flash it.
Power off the phone and pull the battery and then replace it.
Hold the vol down button and power button down at the same time untill your in hboot. Once in hboot use the vol keys to scroll to recovery and then hit the power button to select.
Once in recovery use vol buttons to scroll to install zip from sdcard and the trackball to select it. Then navigate to the su.zip and use trackball to select and confirm.
thank you!
This works. Did it myself after 2 frustrating weeks of hitting a dead-end. There's always hope when you search these forums!
I had a problem with rooting mine because of the downgrading from 2.3.4... took a while and wouldn't boot at first but after flashing stock IMGs in hboot I was able to fix this. s-off took a while too. the downgrade and s-off forum is good but I ran into several problems
Thanks for this tip. I have an EVO 4G and was having similar probelms with su binary. Got it to work now!
