Hey guys well i crashed the software on my old evo due to rooting lol. IM getting a new one shortly. What Im asking is a REALLY GOOD step by step guide, with the links to download the right files, to root the 2.2 stock froyo it comes with BUT ALSO nand-unlocking it while im rooting it. The reason im asking for this was I had a hard time flashing cyanogen mod 6 after i used the root method from djr3Z from the droid demos website (It was downgrading the stock 2.2 to stock 2.1, rooting 2.1 and then finally going to a rooted 2.2 with Amon Ra recovery) Please help me! Im a noob and i would really appreciate it. Thx in advance!
Nand wasn't unlocked fully with the method you used. Many people had that issue. You can either unlock nand and be done, or wait a few days for the latest unrevoked to come out.
Here is how to unlock nand :

If you followed regaw's complete tutorial, including unrevoked-forever, you unlocked your nand and have the ability to flash custom roms. I know because I did it and am currently running Fresh 3.2. I also made nandroid backups and boot between them.
You can't jump right in to Cyanogen because you're on the wrong hboot. Cyanogen requires hboot 76, and you're probably on 93 or similar from regaw's method. Boot phone holding volume down and check it out.
I can't post links, but you can search the forums for "ENG hboot 76" and probably get the right post on how to get hboot back. Also, I believe it may be easier to find the link in the actual Cyanogen forums.
Keep in mind this downgrades your PRI to 1.3 instead of 1.40. Find the fix for that in a different thread.
Good luck.

Ok thx for that. The only question is when i get my evo and its on stock 2.2 should i do the nand-unlock, will that also root the phone in the process?
By the time you get your phone unrevoked will be out, with unrevoked, you just do a couple of mouse clicks and your done.
Also, unlocking nand is different than rooting. You must be rooted first in order to unlock nand. Just wait for your phone first, unrevoked will make it easy and painless for you.

Unrevoked is a great tool that truly makes it easy. When i rooted without it, I lost everything. But unrevoked doesn't delete anything at all. Will the new one unlock and or will you still need forever and .76 boot img?

Not sure, still no details on their site. I recommend getting the .76 hboot because roms like cyanogenmod wont flash on other versions.

yea i got my evo back that i broke. They fixed it and brought it back to 2.1. I turned it off to charge it. Whne it was done and i turned it on instead of it booting up the sprint music with the 4g symbol, it went into htc with the cursive letters popping up quietly brilliant. Anyone has had this issue? I mean after that it goes smooth im on the interface and all goes well any advice?

Sounds like you have the oldest version of 2.1 like they did a factory reset. No issue. Your phone is primed and ready for rooting. If you are going to run CM6, then I would suggest using Toast's method to root and nand unlock. This will give you the necessary eng hboot 0.76.2000 to run that ROM. Although you may want to do search through the forums for a means of unlocking nand without downgrading your PRI to 1.34_003 (current is 1.40_003). The eng-PC36IMG.zip in Toast's part 2 "How to unlock nand" will downgrade your PRI.

You are ready to rock n roll now.
First Step - Root
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-unrevoked-method/
Second Step - Unlock Nand with Toastcfh .76 Eng Bootloader
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-unlock-nand-on-the-htc-evo-4g/
Third Step - Get ROM Manager
Go to the android market and download ROM Manager. Once installed, open the app and have it flash a custom recovery for you, either clockworkmod or RA.
Have Fun.
Ok so im tryin to root my htc evo. Ive watched sooo many videos and read so many forums about how to do it. And i cant figure it out... Ive tried with a mac with unrevoked. It says I dont have to download anything to the phone, and when it runs it goes good till it reboots, and on the unrevoked screen it says waiting for root.. Phone restarts like normal.. Ive tried with windows, downloaded hboot. But im not sure I know how to install the boot drivers to my phone... But they say its updated. I run unrevoked and it ends up on the same screen. Waiting for root. Then ive read u need to replace a file on your phone but other people have said it will brick ur phone.. Im totaly lost. I need help tryin to figure this out.. Also had a question. Could it be because of the update sprint put out with all that extra bs like blockbuster and kindel and that stupid game nova on the update the reason why i cant root my phone?? Pls if some one can help me like step by step or the best way to go about it... I am a newbi... Help pls
theres a very good well written thread in the dev section that covers every software version and how to root.
to root in windows with unrevoked (i think there is a new version) you will need to install the updated hboot drivers in windows, linux requires no extra drivers to install

Umm have you checked to see if you have a modified recovery? If you ran unrevoked you are probably rooted you just don't realize it. Root is just a certain access to the phone - nothing visual. Hold down the volume down key when you are booting and do you get into a greenish recovery menu? If so - you are rooted and can install custom roms.
Just look thru your Apps and if you see an App called SuperUser, you are rooted (this is if you used Unrevoked 3)
i think you might have the upgraded hboot, which unrevoked doesnt work on. i am in the process of writing a mac tutorial. pm me or email me and i will try to help you...
Dude you answered your own question. I'ma super noob and i know that if you accepted that OTA (over the air) 3.70 update that installs all that extra nonsense you cant root by unrevoked right now. You can do it using adb shell but i wouldnt recommend it. Its a lil confusing.
Check your phone. Hit menu>settings>about phone and look at your software number. If it says 3.70 your currently out of luck...
BTW find out which hboot you have too. Power off then Hold the power and volume down button til a white screen appears. The second line should say Hboot 0.97.00 or 2.02 or 2.10.
A 2 anything means you have to wait.

HTC evo 4g, Android 2.3.5.
I am going slow as to undertsand each process, so after much reading and video watching, and comprehending.
I first backed my phone up to SD card. The tried the UNRevoKED 3 to Root my phone.... It isnt working. after alotta time hooked to my computer, it says root didnt work. No error code, just didnt work.
I tried down loading driver to computer from the website. I also rebooted the phone holding volume key down and it states S-on. I am told if it is rooted it will say S-off....
Any help? I dont want to Brick my phone.

Unfortunately my guide is only for after the device is already unlocked via HTCDev.com. I think the OP needs step-by-step instructions on exactly how to do that part.
I recommend these instructions: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html
Note that the TacoRoot method does not require using HTCDev.com at all.
P.S. @OP "S-OFF" doesn't mean you're rooted, nor does "S-ON" mean you're not.

hey i just got a droid incredible from my sister (not going to use it as a phone) and i would like to root it and flash a custom ROM, im sorta know about rooting and flashing but i keep looking for ways to root this phone and its way difficult for me. i am not about to use adb or android sdk for some reason they never work with methods for my other phones. not sure how to get to recovery just goes to a hboot screen which i see is normal. a lot of the links are broken on methods to root i see that unrevoked dosent work with 2.3.4. and im really frustrated with this phone. it has 2.3.4. S-ON and hboot 1.0.7 i don't know how to do the radio stuff please help.

The only way to root 2.3.4 is to unlock your bootloader using htcdev unlock, then use fastboot (an android sdk program) to flash a custom recovery. Once you have the recovery installed, you can flash a rom of your choosing. There are no one click options available since the inc got gingerbread. It requires a bunch of steps, but isnt all that hard. Here is a working guide if you decide to take the plunge. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258. Note that you do not need s-off to flash a rom, but you do need s-off to flash radios, hboots, and splash screens.
