Ok so im tryin to root my htc evo. Ive watched sooo many videos and read so many forums about how to do it. And i cant figure it out... Ive tried with a mac with unrevoked. It says I dont have to download anything to the phone, and when it runs it goes good till it reboots, and on the unrevoked screen it says waiting for root.. Phone restarts like normal.. Ive tried with windows, downloaded hboot. But im not sure I know how to install the boot drivers to my phone... But they say its updated. I run unrevoked and it ends up on the same screen. Waiting for root. Then ive read u need to replace a file on your phone but other people have said it will brick ur phone.. Im totaly lost. I need help tryin to figure this out.. Also had a question. Could it be because of the update sprint put out with all that extra bs like blockbuster and kindel and that stupid game nova on the update the reason why i cant root my phone?? Pls if some one can help me like step by step or the best way to go about it... I am a newbi... Help pls
theres a very good well written thread in the dev section that covers every software version and how to root.
to root in windows with unrevoked (i think there is a new version) you will need to install the updated hboot drivers in windows, linux requires no extra drivers to install

Umm have you checked to see if you have a modified recovery? If you ran unrevoked you are probably rooted you just don't realize it. Root is just a certain access to the phone - nothing visual. Hold down the volume down key when you are booting and do you get into a greenish recovery menu? If so - you are rooted and can install custom roms.
Just look thru your Apps and if you see an App called SuperUser, you are rooted (this is if you used Unrevoked 3)
i think you might have the upgraded hboot, which unrevoked doesnt work on. i am in the process of writing a mac tutorial. pm me or email me and i will try to help you...
Dude you answered your own question. I'ma super noob and i know that if you accepted that OTA (over the air) 3.70 update that installs all that extra nonsense you cant root by unrevoked right now. You can do it using adb shell but i wouldnt recommend it. Its a lil confusing.
Check your phone. Hit menu>settings>about phone and look at your software number. If it says 3.70 your currently out of luck...
BTW find out which hboot you have too. Power off then Hold the power and volume down button til a white screen appears. The second line should say Hboot 0.97.00 or 2.02 or 2.10.
A 2 anything means you have to wait.

I have rooted my phone before but I don't what a custom ROM or kernel. I just want to root the phone to allow me to use setCPU and Wireless Tether.
I haven't been able to find anything that works. I tried the below link but my virus software will not allow me to save the files. I can't turn off the software (work computer).

Thanks for your help!

Turn phone off
Hold volume down and boot up into bootloader
Tell us what top two line on that white screen with skating androids says.
And post in q and a next time.
First of all this would belong in the question and answer forum. This is THE method to use. Looks like you will need access to another PC then.

yeah well you were following the right guide.
did you check your device manager while phone is plugged in to make sure drivers are all set?
maybe try the universal root by xHausx
he says it should work with 2.02 now.
just follow all instructions slowly. everyone has had success with the guide your first started to use.
let us know what you get. and always be very descriptive. Must explain everything in detail to get the best help.
Hey guys I was having some trouble with that too, I had rooted using unrevoked and unrooted with the s-on tool and a PC36IMG, I tried going back to root with the original method but the modified USB driver was already installed and unrevoked wouldn't work.
Don't ask me why but I accepted the OTA update and now trying to root with the method linked to above gives me an error at the last line of step 4, telling me rageagainstthecage cannot me found.
I was just wondering if there's any hope??? I'll take any root method you can suggest.
PS the root and unroot guides I used were from the droiddemos.com but evidently I cannot link to them until I reach 8 posts.
ive tried atleast 5+ different rooting methods but cant seem to get it.. i rooted my samsung moment easily as well as others but when it comes to this evo i cant do it.. i bricked it 2 times and to the point where i couldnt even flash the stock ruu anymore but luckily it was only 2 days since buying it so i was able to do a brand new swap and now i have my new evo #2 and havent touched it yet unless i got a fool proof rooting method.. Im not trying to go thru the bricking of this one to.. any input is thankful
Long story short, my microphone broke on my old EVO, so I unrooted to take it back. I got a new one and tried to root it again used UnrEVOked3 again and it not work. Recovery does not work, there is no superuser options. On the hboot menu it does say S-OFF. I have tried to reuse the UnrEVOked3 and it will not recognize my device. I am just looking for some form of help so that I can get my phone rooted so I can get CM7.
Thanks
have you tried to dl superuser (the one from Chains) from the market?
Just did, still will not let me use root apps or anything, only difference is now I have the app.
Did you reboot?
Use this thread as a reference to completely unroot your phone, then retry unrEVOked...

Well, since you show S off, I'd just flash a PC36IMG of Amon Ra recovery, and then flash a new rom. I've seen people report of Unrevoked having a difficult time for whatever reason. I've never had a hiccup with it, but taht doesn't matter. Perhaps there was something on your computer causing you issues, such as HTC sync, PDAnet, an anti virus program, etc. Anyways, download this PC36IMG, put it on the root of your SD card. Shut your phone off, then boot to the bootloader. It'll ask you to update, and select vol up to say yes. Once it's done, you can boot into recovery and flash away. That should all work just fine, because you're S off already.
Try what he ^^^ said first...if that still fails, try what I said lol

Not sure what you're talking about. I think your info is outdated. Unrevoked works with all hardware and software versions for the Evo (3.70) included. I've used it more than a few times. Unrevoked was updated months ago, like right after Christmas.

I had previously posted to the forum about unrooting my Evo 4g and was referred to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141 I have followed all of the steps and I still have root access. On the recovery it told me that the PC36IMG was outdated. My phone goes in for repairs in the morning and i desperately need to remove root access and all traces of root. Any suggestions. I can use all the help that I can get.
Try a newer PC36IMG from here : http://goo-inside.me/evo/stock/ruu/
If that doesn't work you can always try an RUU.
what is a RUU?

Another way to unroot, but you run it with your phone connected to your computer. Not to be rude... but if you don't know what it is I probably wouldn't recommend running it. If your going to there are directions near the top of that page that tell you how to use it.
Okay, what would you recommend?
http://j.mp/ruuevo4g
Follow this tutorial, enjoy.
READ. EVERY. DAMNED. INSTRUCTION. Do not skim, do not skip. READ IT. Failing to do so may result in a bricked phone which will eat your cat.
I have followed all the instructions and it is telling me that my phone is not connected properly to my pc. what do i do?
Did you install the hboot driver, and connect your phone via fastboot from the bootloader?
What OS? Did it work previously? DId you download the drivers from htc's site? When you plug it in, what step are you on?
What......? I am a first time rooter. Can you be a little more specific than that?

http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
Download those drivers, simply follow the instructions
To get to the bootloader:
Power off device
-While powering back on, hold vol+down
-After it scans, use the volume keys to navigate to fastboot, press the power --button to select
-Connect the phone to the pc via usb cable, when the phone displays fastboot usb in blue, run the RUU exe on the pc.
Do i run the fastboot?
Yes you need to select fastboot, connect to the pc, then run the ruu exe on the pc.
I tried that and it still is telling me that my Evo is not connected. I am able to access the files on the SD card through my computer but the program is not seeing it.
Try rebooting both the computer and the phone after you install the drivers.

This is exactly why people should NOT root their phones if they don't know what they are doing. Unrooting the phone is 5 times easier than rooting it, so if you dont know how to unroot, I dont know how you were able to root.
The only reason that I rooted my phone is because of programs like unrevoked3. and the only reason that I am unrooting is because of the need to have it repaired. I love my root access and the freedom that it gives me to install custom roms and be able to do with my phone what i wish instead of only being able to "rent"my phone because the service provider only wants to truely sell me part of a phone instead of the whole thing. I have to look at the programs that they deen acceptable because thats what they want. I have to look at advertisements that they disguise as apps because I dont have the power to modify the phone that I paid for to suit my needs. This is why I root. Because I bought it and I want the whole phone not just the party that they want me to have. This is just like upgrading your computer to W7 then deciding that you like XP better. You upgraded because it was easy, you put in a disk and use a couple of mouse clicks. Now you decide that you dont like it. For me its easy to backstep. For other people it may be a little more complicated. It can still be done all someone needs to do is point them in the right direction.
Try redoing it the first way you tried. It seems you tried to flash the PC36IMG in recovery, not the bootloader.
I came to this conclusion because you said:
'On the recovery it told me that the PC36IMG was outdated."
Instead, put the PC36IMG.zip on the root of your SD card (not in any folders), boot into the bootloader & when it asks you to update, choose yes.
Be sure to flash the unrevoked s-on zip in recovery FIRST.
Sorry if this has already been said, I just skimmed the thread. If you need the correct PC36IMG, let me know.

I would like to thank all that helped me in this thread and i did click the thank you button as well. I returned my Evo and they didnt see that it was ever rooted. I found out that the problem was that I heeded to have my HTC Sync driver installed on my computer so in the device manager my Evo showed up as My HTC instead of android phone 1.0 or something to that effect. After i installed that I ran the auto RUU found in the first thread of this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141 it was a long and frustrating process but it paid off. Again thank you to all that helped. @ Sitlet I already replied to your concerns about people rooting that dont have a complete understanding and I agree to a point but we all have to start off somewhere. So now I have to root my new Evo and I go into it with a better understanding.

Hi,
I red a lot about these problem, but non of the posts helped me!
I had the latest version of the frimware. I read/write in hebrew so the RTL problem was really annoying! so i decided to root my phone and install rom that has RTL fix.
I did downgrade and i rooted my phone, but i cant get rid off the the radio (s-on).
I rooted with visionary+, but when i open the "easy radio tool", and i press on "do it", it stuck at the end. i waited one hour, and i know that it used to take 20 sec.
I tried other computer, i did factory reset, i even made gold card... nothing. still stuck. i tried to do h-boot with terminal emulator, after i press su its ok, with the #, but the next it says "cant open sdcard/dhd/check". i tried different sdcard but it doesnt matter.
Now i have android version 2.2, kernel 2.6.32.21 and software 1.32.405.6.
Please tell me what i do wrong, i spent 10 hours for nothing!!
Thank you very much!

did you downgrade 1st
like in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
how did you get root only with Visionary since visionary doesn't work since 1.72
and if you are really S-OFF (you should see it in the HBOOt menu ...when you restart press Power button and volume down and hold them....), the, instal the latest HTC sync , just to have the latest adb drivers, and take care...when you us Easy radio tool to keep the phone screen on, and on the main window...cause a SUPER USER window is gonna appear to ask for Super user permission ...of course you press YES
Hi
Tank you very much for the answer.
Yes, i did downgrade exactualy like in the post (i had Gingerbread , i didnt have to do the froyo-section 2a right? :/ )
After that i did root with visionary that is very simple after i downgrade to 1.32.
I didnt finish the radio tool, but i had the superuser permission and i pressed "yes".
Doesnt work.
Any other ideas?

but 1st ENG S-OFF
hi
I checked, its still s-on...
I have the last htc sync.
I understood that it doesnt matter what you do first, but i will try.
i tried the eng s-off but i have the same problem, it stuck in the middle, when it says "verifying and disabling write protection". there is not any error message like the easy radio tool, it just stuck, no matter how long i wait.

Ok so i know that gingerbread doesnt have root yet, but i installed the mod for the sense launcher it didnt work but my s-on isnt on its off... i dont know if this means anything to anybody ill upload a pictureee. Does this mean we might be closer to root?
i think i uploaded the picture ?
Yup. U r a lucky Guy. Put a copy of amon RA onto the root of ur SD card. Boot onto the bootloader and when it asks if u want to update say yes. U will then be able to flash whatever u like
If you were s-off before, you should still be s-off after. I have two s-off EVOs that I was going to sell, so I restored them to latest OTA (yea I'm a jerk!) but they stayed s-off (lucky for those when I do decide to sell).
I don't get the point of this, unless you had an S-ON phone and somehow got it S-OFF after the 2.16 hboot and 2.3.3 android upgrade.
YES! thats the thing! I unrooted, got the gingerbread update, after installation and what not it said S-ON. now it says s-off and i have no idea what i did, i been doing so much crap to my phone i dotn even remember what i did. I wanted to try the sense launcher from tommytomatoe and it froze my phone and couldnt do nothing. So i pressed power volume down and it now said s-off.

If what you say is true, you might be able to help the rooting effort by pulling some info off your phone that could be valuable to the devs. I would explain the situation to them, and offer whatever info they need from your phone.
They'll probably call shenanigans on you-- I know I would. But maybe-- just maybe, your Evo carries the mutant X gene that we need to crack this puzzle.

Yes i used unrevoke 3 to root but i installed a stock froyo ruu unrooted because after i tried to unroot with unrevoked it didnt work. After i installed the froyo ruu it said S-ON, i then went on to install gingerbread, went back to check the hboot to see if everything was right and it still said S-ON, then i went thru every process to root my phone just to see if i could try soemthing but failed of course. Don't think running a ruu will turn s-on. Once you are s-off, you are s-off until you run the s-on tool. Correct me if I am wrong.

I say somehow some way when u attempted to re-root it went thru cuz that's the only logical way s-off could've been attained. Clearing ur data won't and u were s-on before u took the OTA update so it wasn't present before hand. Have you tried flashing another rom from recovery just to see if it works? You my friend maybe the "MVD" lol!!!
