Long story short, my microphone broke on my old EVO, so I unrooted to take it back. I got a new one and tried to root it again used UnrEVOked3 again and it not work. Recovery does not work, there is no superuser options. On the hboot menu it does say S-OFF. I have tried to reuse the UnrEVOked3 and it will not recognize my device. I am just looking for some form of help so that I can get my phone rooted so I can get CM7.
Thanks
have you tried to dl superuser (the one from Chains) from the market?
Just did, still will not let me use root apps or anything, only difference is now I have the app.
Did you reboot?
Use this thread as a reference to completely unroot your phone, then retry unrEVOked...

Well, since you show S off, I'd just flash a PC36IMG of Amon Ra recovery, and then flash a new rom. I've seen people report of Unrevoked having a difficult time for whatever reason. I've never had a hiccup with it, but taht doesn't matter. Perhaps there was something on your computer causing you issues, such as HTC sync, PDAnet, an anti virus program, etc. Anyways, download this PC36IMG, put it on the root of your SD card. Shut your phone off, then boot to the bootloader. It'll ask you to update, and select vol up to say yes. Once it's done, you can boot into recovery and flash away. That should all work just fine, because you're S off already.
Try what he ^^^ said first...if that still fails, try what I said lol

Not sure what you're talking about. I think your info is outdated. Unrevoked works with all hardware and software versions for the Evo (3.70) included. I've used it more than a few times. Unrevoked was updated months ago, like right after Christmas.

i rooted on my old phone when i was on 1.47xxx, i had to send it back to sprint and now im on 3.26.651.6 but i do not want to run unrevoked...i dont know, it just rubs me the wrong way. is there anyway i can do that??? i tried searching for root 3.26 but nothing really helps...
could i downgrade to 1.47 and then root? anybody done that? sorry for the idiotic question...after i rooted the first time, i stopped paying attention to root topics and dont know how advanced rooting is now. i nkow theres a new ota 3.29 but i havent upgraded yet...
Unrevoked 3.21 works very well, I recommend using it. If you do, you'll be rooted in 5 minutes.

You can downgrade in Regaw's how to root 2.2, and then instead of running unrevoked you can use any other root method for 2.1.
Edit... I did it this way too.

I rooted with simple root the first time with my phone. Then I got one for my wife with 3.26 and I rooted it with unrevoked 3.21 and honestly its easy as hell. I would just suggest using Amon afterwards. The only way unrevoked has issues working is if you dont install the HBoot driver properly. Other than that its just click and wait it out no downgrading
P.S. I felt the same way you did about unrevoked but they have come a long way and I really dont hear many issues with the new 3.21... IMO

well i dont know. i tried it yesterday and it didnt work for me. so i said to hell with it. but i dont know, maybe ill give it another try.
what exactly does unrevoked do vs. other methods of rooting? i downloaded the file and it was only 23mb...when i rooted my first time the file was like 171mb plus the recovery image and eng boot yada yada yada...maybe i just need a refresher course lol
unrevoked needs the ABSOLUTE NEWEST software. try manually upgrading (settings, system updates, htc software update) and then try it. it is small bcuz it doesn't wipe you and install a completely new firmware and software that is rooted (hard way) it simply exploits the software you already have with no wipe (easy way)

Unfortunately I'm not at a computer, but there's only 1 method for rooting posted by regaw so should be easy to find.
I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.
Hardware version 0004
Build Number 3.30.651.3
Yeah - This Thread is pretty helpful to me as well... Im still reading greek 'cause - although Im no noob when it comes to tech challenges I am a noob to rooting. I taught my self Homebrew for PSP, How to build themes for my PS3, how to write HTML for my website and have always been good at learning this kind of stuff on my own, BBUUTTTT I also like to read ALOT before I do some thing. This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.

With autoroot how it roots depends on the phone, it was originally based on toastcfh's method but will use unrevoked forever if the eng hboot can not be used. It also saves everything it does in a log file so you can see exactly what happened if something does go wrong.
Unrevoked works fine with the new Sprint update. I don't want to sound like a jerk, but there's gotta be something you're doing wrong. My Evo was purchased on 1/1/11 and had all the most recent updates and I got it first try.

Ok so I purchased my EVO right before xmas. I was running the same software, hardware as the current EVO's being handed out today. Took me quite awhile to muster up the courage as well as do all the research before deciding to root. As of last night, succesfully rooted using Unrevoked3 following all instructions, flashed cyanogen 6.1.2 and everything went flawlessly. Albeit I may not be in the "know" as most on here (newbie, especially on android) but following my recent adventure, I have also rooted 2 more EVO's (friend+boss) running the same specs as mine and the OP, all with no problems. I know that this may not be the case for everyone but for the MOST part, everyone I have encountered here seems to really try to be helpful.
< One very happy rooted EVO user
hey xhausx, is there some sort of error detection .log in your script? seems like a great tool, just if you have no idea where something messed up there will be problems.

Sry to hear that. See if THIS helps.
oooh that sucks. you have to re-root (you can just use unrevoked 3 again), then put the unrevoked s-on tool (found in the FAQ section of this thread http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever ) on the root of your sdcard. boot into recovery, and flash it as you would a rom. then check bootloader to make sure it is s-on. if it is, run the ruu again.
just curious, why dont u like root?
I just tried to re-run Unrevoked 3 and it will not reconnect, the tool just says waiting for device.
And I don't like root because of too much power.

no, it wouldnt turn s-on, and you might not even be able to accept it. if you are having a hard time using unrevoked, seeing as your rom no longer has root permissions, i can lead you through manually flashing amon-ra recovery to your phone and you can flash ur s-on from there.
I just got it to root again using Unrevoked 3 and restored to right after my first root. I should be able to now install the S-on tool and install it from the recovery menu?

That is correct. Also, I'm pretty sure that since you were still S off, you could've just flashed a pc36img of a recovery from the bootloader, flashed the s on tool, and then ran RUU.
Edit : just saw that dk already suggested that. Sorry.

I just don't want to be that guy does not or has a failed update when the official OTA is out.

If you're back to stock, s on, and aren't on the latest OTA, then yes, you can take the OTA if you'd like to. That will bring you up to the latest software update.

sorry for leaving you in the dark for a while. that was one crazy day. but i'm at my comp now so i can help (not that there's anything left to do).
if i were you, i'd double check you are fully unrooted. boot into bootloader, and make sure you are s-on. then boot into recovery and make sure you have no custom recovery, just the stock htc one. also make sure your rom has no superuser app installed. if not, you are all good.
No prob man, I booted into the bootloader and S-On is back on and then tried to boot into recovery, a black screen with a red triangle came up so I assume there's no recovery installed. There is also no superuser Icon in the app draw.
The main reason I returned to stock is,is that this is my primary and only phone. I plan on getting the Nexus S when it come to sprint so I will see you guys again. That way if I bork the NS I got my trusty evo to activate.
Again thank you all for the help.

just saying, the evo is freaking hard to brick.

i think i uploaded the picture ?
Yup. U r a lucky Guy. Put a copy of amon RA onto the root of ur SD card. Boot onto the bootloader and when it asks if u want to update say yes. U will then be able to flash whatever u like
If you were s-off before, you should still be s-off after. I have two s-off EVOs that I was going to sell, so I restored them to latest OTA (yea I'm a jerk!) but they stayed s-off (lucky for those when I do decide to sell).
I don't get the point of this, unless you had an S-ON phone and somehow got it S-OFF after the 2.16 hboot and 2.3.3 android upgrade.
YES! thats the thing! I unrooted, got the gingerbread update, after installation and what not it said S-ON. now it says s-off and i have no idea what i did, i been doing so much crap to my phone i dotn even remember what i did. I wanted to try the sense launcher from tommytomatoe and it froze my phone and couldnt do nothing. So i pressed power volume down and it now said s-off.

If what you say is true, you might be able to help the rooting effort by pulling some info off your phone that could be valuable to the devs. I would explain the situation to them, and offer whatever info they need from your phone.
They'll probably call shenanigans on you-- I know I would. But maybe-- just maybe, your Evo carries the mutant X gene that we need to crack this puzzle.
Nice man! maybe just maybe your phone is the "root" of all hahahahaha

Did you have root before at all? Did you use Unrevoked3 to root before? If you did, how did you unroot?
Yes i used unrevoke 3 to root but i installed a stock froyo ruu unrooted because after i tried to unroot with unrevoked it didnt work. After i installed the froyo ruu it said S-ON, i then went on to install gingerbread, went back to check the hboot to see if everything was right and it still said S-ON, then i went thru every process to root my phone just to see if i could try soemthing but failed of course. I then wanted to try tommytomatoe sense launcher for unrooted and after my phone froze alot i went to clear data by pressing power and volume down. That is when i saw it was S-OFF. do you want to know anythingg else?
Please unroot again and post pics , you are still trying to unroot are you not. Go go.
Im cant unroot, im not even rooted, im running stock gingerbread ota 4.24.651.1
Did you flash the s-on tool when you unrooted?

Yes sir. I did all that was needed to unroot my phone.
Don't think running a ruu will turn s-on. Once you are s-off, you are s-off until you run the s-on tool. Correct me if I am wrong.
Swyped from my Supersonic
i am so tempted to try this....
can you provide the link to this tommytomato mod , at this point, i dont care if i brick my evo ill just go harass sprint and get a refurb or something if i do

This didnt do nothing it was because of the mess up on my end did i go and find the s-on.
You need to write down everything you did and the order you did it. Also please provide the links that you used.
Also, was it the 4.22 or the 4.24 that you updated to?
*Edit* Nevermind I just saw your earlier post

I say somehow some way when u attempted to re-root it went thru cuz that's the only logical way s-off could've been attained. Clearing ur data won't and u were s-on before u took the OTA update so it wasn't present before hand. Have you tried flashing another rom from recovery just to see if it works? You my friend maybe the "MVD" lol!!!
