Upgrade 16gb to 32/64gb manually? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if there is a way or is it possible to buy a 16 gb model of the note 2 and manually change the internal memory to a 32/64 gb. This is because they probably wont sell the 32/64gb models here in the Philippines. So I'm planning to buy the 16gb model and have it manually upgraded to the 32/64gb memory. Like taking apart the note and replace the part that contains the 16gb memory and switch it with the 32 or 64 gb. Not sure how it works but maybe its possible? Thanks

Hell no unless you can grab another motherboard from a different model

Just put in a 64 GB external sdcard dude , this is realy a noobish question mate.

This mod in effect makes Android believe that the sd card is the internal memory so you could add 64gb of internal memory

[Q] Max Memory 32 GB or 48 GB???

So on T-Mobile site for GS2 specs, it says that it can support upto 32 GB of additional storage. However on the box, it said some what 48 GB. Do they mean 32 GB exteranl + 16 GB internal??
Exactly, 48 is the maximum capacity
16 pin the internal and up to 32 external

More than likely. I have a 32gb and the internal 16gb. There's no such thing as a 48gb card.

technically speaking there is no such thing as MAX MEMORY unless you are talking about RAM which we are are Maxed out at 1GB
there is a MAX internal storage space of 16GB give or take a few GB for the internal ROM Apps
and there is simply no MAX external storage, as you can swap to any amount of external SD card
even the 64 GB works with our phone.... a bit waaaaay too overpriced if you ask me
soon enough when the 128 GB comes out the 64 GB will drop in price
so until then carrying a few extra 32 GB is the best deal at the moment

Thanks AllGamer. So, when they say 'Upto 32 GB' doesn't this mean that we cannot insert external storage of more than 32 GB. Has anyone tried the 64 GB storage and if the phone recognizes it, does it show the 64 GB space. It'll be gud to know if someone has tried and can confirm as you do not want to make a weird face if you buy and it did not work
it works, there's a video floating around.
all you need to do is format it with the phone itself or linux
you don't get full 32 GB on a 32 GB SD card, you get like 29GB, same goes for the 64GB you get around 59GB after the format
Just to clarify, 32GB is absolutely the max amount you can have on this device. any 64gb microsd are actually a new type of card, (SDXC) Previous generations are (SDHC) which has a maximum capacity of 32GB... make no mistake, the 32GB limit is a limit of the SDHC slot on the device, new 64gb cards will not work.
that's turning into an urban legend...
very few devices OLD devices have that limitation
any thing that came out in the past 2 years can read the 64GB microSDXC, you just need to format it
you don't even need to partition it, just throw it into the phone, go to settings internal storage format, done
Ill be damned... You are right, looks like lots of these devices will accept sdxc cards.... Sorry for spouting misinformation.

your screenshot is showing your internal memory test. If you want to test external memory then you have to pick /sdcard/external_sd instead.
To respond to OP: I got mine from Amazon, cost me 54 EUR for SanDisk UHS class1, class 10, XC I 64gb. 32gb Sammy MicroSD HC class 10 is performing a bit better for me (just a slight bit) but lacks the space, and SanDisk one is performing as a beauty here.
ps: if in need of my screens for test on Sandisk, let me know.
Is it worth getting a 64gb card for sg2?
I ask as I've seen many reviews tgat say data can be wiped as it's not suitable.
I'm in the market for a card though can't decide if 64gb would be overkill, but at same time would negate deleting old files vids etc I may need later...
Sandisk seems the way to go, any thoughts?

Depends on your need for storage space. I had 12Gb of music on 32GB one and photos and vids just zeroed it, let alone apps/games on it. I have no problem with 64GB now. I guess, it's each to his own. And if it is going to be self_wiped, then it will be my loss there, but I don't see any problem at this time, nor my microsd performs bad or has glitches.
Having SanDisk only for a month now, I can say I'm pleased how it's performing in terms of speed and stability. I can't predict what comes next but I never had any microsd breaking on me, or any problems in the past (had from 2 t o64GB microsd from SanDisk, Samsung etc... over 4 years time span).
Hope this helps a bit.

Owner of SGS2 here (visible in my sig.): If you pick /sdcard on SGS2 it's measuring internal storage (16GB one), if you change it to /sdcard/external_sd, then it's testing external microsd card. Dunno what SGS3 does and what not, it's on ICS as a base...
Got an Sandisk Micro SDXC with 64 GB and its working in my HTC HD2 and my Galaxy S2, too. But I got it formatted with FAT32 don`t know if Ex-Fat is working. Price was 58 Euro in Germany 1/4 year ago. Im on German 4.0.4 Stock Rom without Root.

I just bought a sandisk 64gb sdxc. Can't wait for it to be delivered!!! $60 AUD on Shoppingsquare, which i think is good value
And now for my 2cents worth:
Is 64gb an overkill?
Yes, but that's what I said about my 16gb card 2 years ago, and now I have no space.
Besides, i envisage apps, music, videos to get bigger as it gets better in quality.
e.g. with 64gb i can afford to have lossless audio.
Also, I have now in my room, 1gb, 2gb, 4gb, 8gb micro sd card.
I probably would have spent less money if I upgrade to a much higher capacity each time.
not to mention they are now just sitting there being wasted.
Usb adapters, lik SanDisk one, FTW / then you have a "switchable" USB key...
I don't have any wasted microSDs at all, but still has 2 x 4gb, 1 x 8 gb and 1 x 16gb micros's...
Gonna put in an order for one of these. Thanks for advice!
nice!

Hi,
Storage media of any type does not 'self-zero' itself. When it is full it stops you from writing data. Think about it: Would Sandisk still be in business if it did?
A likely reason your Sd card are self-zero'ing is because you bought a counterfeit card from a shop like Amazon or Ebay.
This is very common.
What happens? The fraudster buys cheaper 4 Gb SD Cards. He then modified the SD card firmware so that it reports to the operating system that the card is actually 32Gb. The O/S formats the card (typically a quick format by writing a few blocks at the start of the card) and you start coping the data across. Regretfully when you cross the 4 Gb limit of the card you end up writing no where. Seems that the data is simply zeroed or another error appears.
There are numerous of reports about this on Amazon.
Solution:
Don't buy SD cards from Ebay.
If you buy from Amazon then ensure that you buy from Amazon and not the Amazon MarketPlace.
Finally: If it is too cheap, then there may well be something amiss ;P
Also, I have now in my room, 1gb, 2gb, 4gb, 8gb micro sd card.
I probably would have spent less money if I upgrade to a much higher capacity each time.

Problem
i buy de sandisk 64gb and when i tranfer files from mi pc to the sd card i got slow tranfer speeds (around 5-6 mb/s). The sd is in fat32 that possibily affects the perfomance?, when i do sd speed test from the play store i got 13mb/s write and 30mb/s read.
Also i cant achive mounting correctly on ntfs with the app from the marquet ntfs mounter which is in xda
someone pass something like this?

64Gb SanDisk works fine on mine, though I'm not on Cmiui, I'm on Sensation 4.1 flavor now, it's ICS 4.04 based (was on GB 2.3.6 before), 32GB Samsung one works flawlesly on my kid's SGS2 and any other older microSd we have works. Other then that, all my old microSd's are workign OK with adapters and such
No waste for me
Got my 64gb and it worked fine with cmiui and now with resurrection remix ! Thanks for your help and reply.

[Q] SD card capacity?

Well, this may be a silly question, but is there any way of making a bigger sd card work on the GT-N7100? I believe that the max capacity is 64 gb but can you get any bigger sd card work on this device. I am also a bit curious if there's any way of doing this when you are rooted or if the device is just not compatible with any higher than 64 gb sd cards. Would be great to get some answers

There is a hardware hack for N2 that allows to add another sd card,on top of the 64 Gb sd card. Basically another card with its adapter is stuck on the back of the cover(inside) and is coonected by a copper wire to the phone. As far as i can remember , nfc has to be "taken off". Well im wont go into the technicalities.
And in CES 2013 there is a chance of seeing a 128 Gb sd card. So you gotta wait a bit to find out

This really should go in the Q&A forum, but ... Samsung makes microSD cards. If those aren't "compatible" I wouldn't know what else could be.
Actually just about any class 10 memory card will do.
Yeah pretty much any Microsd will work on the note2. Choose Samsung, SanDisk, Kingston, Adata etc

I recently bought a 64 gb class 10 san disk micro sd card...it says ...they are the fastest...but hey...i am over happy with it...just installed the ex2sdinternal memory script ...it simply swaps your memory...e.g...my internal memory is now 64 gb...and my sd memory is 16 gb ....nice?
Now i can install any big gameloft and ea games without worring about directory bind and there freezes and force closes...
I really advice you to buy a 64 gb...it is cheap..i bought it with a adapter for 55€..it should be 70-75 $ max.

Is class 10 really important ?
Speed class corresponds to the burst write speed, which is important for devices like high end cameras. Since I have a class 4 and have no problem filming in HD, I suppose it isn't a necessity for the Note2.
Maybe more important are the read speed and IOPS (for small files) but I don't know where to find these data.

16 vs. 32 GB and ROMs

Is anyone having trouble deciding on 16 vs 32GB configurations? Mainly because of the difference in RAM, with 16/2GB and 32/3GB.
Is there a difference in ROM building based on these versions? Or will all ROMs work the same on both versions? Do any other phones have the same thing, having different amounts of RAM? Not sure if I need the extra GB, but I'll have to see what ROMs support first...
This is all hardware. How in any way would it affect software? It just lets people who need more space for music (like me) to have more internal storage and 1 gb more of RAM which is also really good for people who want speed. For those who just use their phone once in a while, they can buy the 16 GB 2 GB RAM one. It all depends on preference.
32gb
I would recommend 32 gb as all the media files will be bigger due to the resolution. With LG's software there will only be 10~11gb of space left for the user

I agree with you about the 32GB model but not for media files. They can go on external SD card right? 128GB on top of 16 will still do for media files.

Oh right, the g3 will have an sd slot. I'd still go for the 32gb for apps (making the files install on the ext sd is a hassle and the apps won't run when you take the sd out)
Wanting to push this thread because i have the same question... I want to see some roms on the g3. But there is still no answer if there is a difference between 2gb and 3gb in building roms.
No problem here...32gb all the way.
Why would anyone choose 16/2 when you have the option of more storage and ram...makes zero sense.
Always buy the better option!

3gb version all the way!
What is the model number for the 3gb version and where can one buy it.....?
I'm okay with 16 GB of RAM. It wasn't an issue on my Nexus 4 and it isn't an issue on my Nexus 5 and 7. Besides, with an SD card slot, storage isn't an issue.
However, given the option between 2 GB of RAM and 3 GB, I'd go with 3. Always go with more RAM when you have the option.
Problem is that I am in the UK, so only 16gb coming as far as we know. That means I need to compromise on my storage. It will be a hassle to often move my camera pic and videos to SD card, and Whatsapp doesnt allow it.
I dont know which other data intensive apps will also have issues if i try to move to SD card....bit of a minefield.
Any tips would help ?
Shall I just forget about the 16gb version and get a different phone (I do like the look of this one however) ?

I would guess 10 to 11 gb of space for the apps and data that cannot be moved to the SD card. For me, this will consist of a few apps (metro newspaper eats loads of space !) , and lots of camera pics and videos (high resolution) and loads of whatsapp pics and videos (whatsapp stuff cannot be moved to sd either)
......that is why i am avoiding getting the 16gb version - LG are such s**theads for not selling the 32gb in the UK...makes me so angry !
I sent an email to LG UK support and as expected, they could only tell me that at present the 32gb is not announced for the UK, nor do they know if it will be or when, blah blah blah !!
I already preordered the 32GB version because
- apps getting bigger like GTA
- Offline Navigation like Navigon need alot of space
- Taking pictures and Videos
at least LG sells the 32GB here. HTC won't sell the 32gb M8 and S5 also not available as 32 GB
perfect would be a G3 with 64 GB internal memory

i guess so. Amazon.com will ship to Germany, so i guess Amazon.de will ship to USA. The only question would be, if the european model has the needed frequencies for the US and all the carriers
what about ROMs?
Is it that same custom ROM can work on both variants? Only difference i see is an extra gig of RAM. But needed a confirmation if anyone knows
