Well, this may be a silly question, but is there any way of making a bigger sd card work on the GT-N7100? I believe that the max capacity is 64 gb but can you get any bigger sd card work on this device. I am also a bit curious if there's any way of doing this when you are rooted or if the device is just not compatible with any higher than 64 gb sd cards. Would be great to get some answers

Have you ever seen a micro-SD greater than 64gb?!

There is a hardware hack for N2 that allows to add another sd card,on top of the 64 Gb sd card. Basically another card with its adapter is stuck on the back of the cover(inside) and is coonected by a copper wire to the phone. As far as i can remember , nfc has to be "taken off". Well im wont go into the technicalities.
And in CES 2013 there is a chance of seeing a 128 Gb sd card. So you gotta wait a bit to find out

Seems the HD7 uses a Class 2 SDHC card for its internal memory, which is replaceable. I'm surprised it uses such a slow card.
I suspect replacing the card invalidates the warranty though as you need to unscrew the phone and break a seal to get at the slot. Nevertheless you'd end up with a lot more storage, and even 32GB cards are available at class 4 so would be a fair bit faster too.
I remain hopeful that the Venue Pro has gone for the more expensive route of having its 8GB on internal flash chips, leaving the SD card socket free for that nice beefy 32GB card I'm going to put there.
It is odd how MS's own site said they used advanced microSD cards and thus they would be difficult to replace or something. Then we see it's just a class 2. SanDisks are typically a little faster at lower classes than the rest, though.
Two days ago, it happens here
Come one guys, read more please...
You should check the real source here: how dereckcranson was the first to prove us that we can switch any microSD card in our HD7
Okay, I wonder if there are 2 sd card slots in the Focus. Could we switch the 8GB out for 32 and then put a 32 in the 2nd slot?
That would be awesome but I'd be spending just as much on sd cards as I would the phone on an ATT-2year.
If someone get ahold of one, please check!!!

yes it would work if samsung went the route of adding a sd card instead of flash memory as the internal memory. someone would have to open it and see.
I guess the only folks who could figure this out unti after Nov. 8 are the folks with an Omnia 7. Seems to be pretty similar phone.
Hi Guys,
I am having a problem loading some of the new 3.0 roms that are out now...and I was wondering if this might be the issue.
I have the stock SDCARD that came with my evo4g (8gb)...but when I insert it into a card holder in my PC, it only comes up as 5.67gb total. Even when I try to format it...it only says 5.67gb.
Is that normal?
Thanks!
The biggest problem with our SD cards is the type of card it is. our "class" is really low. they SHOULD have put real cards in our phones like class 10. I personally did test both on read and write speeds while in the phone and the class 10 was MUCH faster than the stock. get a 16GB.. btw, it'll never reach 8gb, or 16gb. it'll always be less.

Yes, I understand all that...class, etc...and I know that after formatting it will not be 8gb due to 1024 equals 1gb...but 8gb down to 5.67gb? That seems a little low right?
no. because as soon as you format it and put it back onto the evo... it re-adds its stuff to the sdcard. and also.... the math isn't right. you forgot about the partition table which takes even more away. Depending on how you format it if it is fat32, NTFS, WinFS*I REALLY WISH MICROSOFT WOULD DO THIS! LOL* well, the size of the disk will change. well, I mean the amount you can use. oh and also the unit size can change it.
Do you have an ext partition on the card (for apps2sd)? That's the most likely place the extra space would go. The space you're seeing reported in Windows is the FAT32 partition.
If you don't think you have one, have you ever had one? If you thought you had gotten rid of it, it's also possible you didn't really get rid of it, depending on what you did. Just reformatting it in Windows won't get rid of it.
An 8GB (marketing) card will normally have about 7.45 GB of actual space. So you're missing roughly 1.75 GB.
Can I use a part of the 1.5gb of rom in the desire z/ G2 to make a swap partition?!
It's dangerous to the eeprom life?
Performance would be much better than microSD I think..

As far as I know such a thing does not exist, though like you suggested it may be dangerous due to data corruption (though if properly partitioned you can fix it)
On the other hand using microSD for swap has been nothing but good for me, it has significantly improved speed, cause it is only a couple hundred Mbs of data on the swap partition so it can transfer quickly and smoothly, also it's only used when absolutely necessary.
What class microSD do you have?

I have class 6 microSD, but I think it's fake (trasfering speed is 2 - 3 mbps).
I think that the most important propriety for a good swap is the access time.. but the problem is that I can't find a site where I can see the access time of microSD tested by someone.
I want to buy a 32gb microSD class 10 or class 6, but if I can't find the access time..
I find that mustang and samsung microSD class 10 are cheap..
BTW I would love to know if I can make the swap file in /data or in /temp.
Access time in ROM is a lot faster that in microSD.
I don't think that rom can be damaged by a lot of writing, so why I can't use that support for swap. It would not faster as RAM, but absolutely faster than microSD class 10.
PS: I tried to make swap file on microSD with swapper2 and cyanomod 7.1. I get an error on swapon.. does cyanomod kernel support swap!? Thanks

It should but for the life of me I have no idea why, I'm assuming you were just testing it out but if not, swap is NOT needed for most AOSP ROMs and could in fact slow down your phone and kill your battery.
Also swapper is not the most recommended way of doing it as if something gets corrupted there goes your whole SD Card.. :/ safer to make a partition on it.
As for speeds, the speed from the phone to the SD Card compared to the SD Card to the computer (through the phone/data cable) will vary significantly, and so will read/write times. For me through my phone I can read at around 15 Mb/s (class 10) and write at 3 Mb/s, but if I take it out and put it in a Micro SD Card converter then I can write at speeds of at least 10 Mb/s.
As for access time.. If I'm not mistaken, after RAM, SD storage is one of the fastest digital reading and writing in terms of access time. I have noticed no discrepancies in speed where it would have to read or write to my SD Card's swap so I think that'll be okay.
As for finding out if the ROM can be used... Quite frankly, not a clue, but I would tread lightly there if you want to start experimenting
i am thinking about the same question... Maybe it 's to be safe to use your sd card and make a swap partition. However i am on miui which doesn't require a swap so i don't have to use a swap partition. And the sense 3.5 and 3.0 are to slow and to heavy for me for the old desire z with a such amount of ram memory ..
Now here's a question for all of you:
What is the MicroSD Card that is included with your phone? I know it's a 16GB, but does yours have a company branded on it, and also what class is your SD card?
The reason I ask this is because I want to know if they switched the SD Card on my phone with a crappy one and took the good one just before I picked it up. The SD card that came with my phone is just a plain generic Class 2 card. CLASS 2!! It doesn't even have where it is made at. I'm thinking, are you serious?!?! The transfer rate is so horrible, averaging only at 1.5MBps. Takes me over 30 minutes to transfer about one 1GB of files.
My friend who got the rezound at least got a Class 4 card, even though it's generic and made in Taiwan. But his transfer rate is averaging at 15MBps.
So I just wanna double check with all of you and make sure we all have the same type of SD card.
p.s. Also, this could be the reason why the phone sometimes perform sluggishly. I have a feeling when it pulls anything from the SD Card, may it be a large app, music or videos etc, it will have to wait to read from it.
OH! could this be the MAIN reason behind the slow response when taking pictures? I read that this phone has a horrible camera speed, but it might be due to the SD Card being slow and can only write at very low speed to the card.
I also noticed the slow performance of the included micro sd card, and I can't even access it from my card reader, but only through the phone's "mass storage" mode. Anyway just ordered a Sandisk class 4 32GB card from amazon...
The default card that came with mine is a Class 4 8GB made by Kingston. It doesn't say Kingston on it, but I have an actual Kingston SD card to compare it to.

8GB class 4?? wow that is small in size, although it is a class 4 card. Livid, is it because you are on Bell? Could this be carrier related? Also, how is your camera? Is it having that speed issue in between pictures?

bmxant, I took some pics and at full res, they average at around 1.3-1.5 MB, which is just right there with the speed, giving it a second or 2 delay in storing/saving them onto the sd card.
Sandisk Class4 16gb in mine. Mine was ordered and sent directly from AT&T site...I'm leaning toward them swapping out the card on yours.
If you're only writing at 1.5Mb's, that would definitely cause an extra second of lag. Would be nice if we could see a comparison between the Class 2 SD card vs Class 4.
How much cheaper could they get? It's bad enough the phone has 4GB of internal storage. They should of included either a 32GB Class 2, or 16GB Class 4.
Edit: Just read Namuna's post. Why would they swap out the card?

Alright thanks, I just need some more confirmations and I can visit the store again and confront them with it. I will make them open a fresh box in front of me and check it, unless of course they've swapped all in that store lol!
@aquariuz23: It probably is carrier related. You guys got double on the SD storage and RAM storage versus what we got. I feel a little screwed in that regard, but meh.
For photo taking, it only took one second to snap the picture and store it on the card. The gallery took 5 seconds to read 84 pictures that were stored on the SD card.

That sounds pretty good, what does Antutu say your write speed is?
Topram Class6 16GB here. SD Tools report 18.5MB/sec read and 5.5MB/sec write, which is pretty accurate for C6. (btw, card manufactured in 2009)
This phone I bought used, can't confirm the card is the original.
6.3 MB/s write and 13 MB/s read. It's about average for a Class 4 SD card.
what do u guys use to test the read/writes of the sd card? I wanna do a test on mine as well.

I always used Antutu
Tested with SD Tools
http://www.amazon.com/KOMPUTERBAY-C...&s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325197909&sr=1-11
Think this is worth it?
I am getting an average of 2.9MB/s Write and 11.1MB/s Read. Seems like a typical class 2 card. Took it a while to run the test too since it's so slow lol.
I got 5.4MB/s write, 15.5MB/s read (Antutu) on the 16GB Class 2 card from my Captivate that I wiped and stuck in the Nitro and gave the one that came with it to my Captivate (running hacksung's ICS). Is the included card that bad?
According to AnTuTu:
3.4 MB/s write
>50 MB/s read
According to SD Tools:
5.7 MB/s write
20 MB read
Nothing like some consistency between utils.

That just crippled my trust in AnTuTu's tests...sorry but there is no microSD card with >50mb/sec read speed, it's impossible.

Well, i can proudly say that im a holder of my new 64 gig plus SGS3 phone, well technically its a 64 gig, its actually packing a 16 gig internal memory, modication made thanks to the sd2internaltosdexternal. i was able to swap my 16 gig to my 64 gig, and made my phone think that its actually using a 64 gig internal memory, never looked back, im a happy camper. I got the 64 gig mobile ultra class 10 memory card, its actually runing faster and smoother then the internal one does, ive tested it with speeds of 13-17+ write, read 35+, it averages thought, so yeah ure phone can support upto 2 terrabytes thanks to the SDXC chip support ure phone has (SDXC is new technology thats able to pack large amount of data into one single device big or small without loss of memory maximum capacity of 2 terrabytes), so regardless if u can where to have a 2 terrabyte microsd card which prob wont happen until 5 years from now, ure phone should be able to read it on the exception u can actually get it to work by partitioning ure sd card either in fat32/or extfat.
I had one... Then flashed cm10 and it corrupted it. Some roms don't format it so keep an eye out. Have a dead sd card now
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
just pop the card out put it in a usb reader and reformat it in windows its VERY unlikely that a flashing could actually "break" a sd card.

That is very much correct, flashing won't damage ure sdcard, it can corrupt the software to read it but easily fixed by reformatting through windows or third party format. Only time an sd card gets damaged and goes dead is when the sd card is unable to take excessive heat from ure phone, short circuits, or are fake sdcard which are lots of them out-there, all which will defect easily or through what I mentioned.
well not entirely true. usually the sd card can "take" more heat than the phone can (they are tough little buggers) IT IS possible to software damage them. they have an electronic "bit flip" inside some of them to set read only state.
We have these wee little 808 spy camera's we use on airplanes and rockets. some sandisk cards particularly can have this bitflip occur if power is "interupted" violently to the SD card. the card enter permanent read only mode and no one has figured out a way to fix them short of sending them back to sandisk for warranty replacement.
but this is highly unlikely to happen in an android phone in fact we think this is particular to the the way the firmware in the camera "accesses" the cards ie its doing it goofy which results in that bitflip or whatever it is
just get a reader and reformat the card you should be fine.

Again that's why I said that it's not likely that the phone will damage the sdcard if it's a lagit card..... Specially if it is a fake sdcard it will get damage easily under heat that the phone would be able to take.... Now flashing isn't known to damage sd cards but short circuits that a phone can make will.... It has enough to current to damage it.
again? again what? I said nothing to contradict anything you said (relevant parts) so again what?
and assuming you meant "legit" as in not "fake" sd cards thats not relevant no one was talking about fakes. once you enter "fake" territory all bets are off as to what might kill it
