Originally, I was using the unlimited data plan for non-smartphones from at&t with my GSM Galaxy Nexus. I was using it for a good 5 months or so. at&t was never able to detect my phone as a smartphone even with the IMEI. For some reason earlier this week, I get a text from at&t saying that I have used 2gb of data out of 3gb. I call at&t and it turns out they figured out my phone was a Galaxy Nexus I9250. I thought it was impossible for them to find out, but apparently it isn't anymore. I was tethering, but I have done it in the past and there was never a problem. Now I'm forced to use their data plan for smartphones and am on the 3gb for $30/ month -___-
I guess at&t did a thorough investigation into my phone or something? Anybody else heard of something like this happening.
Happening to a lot of people. Not hard for them to figure it out if they care to do some digging. Its a pretty big flag when you're supposedly using a dumbphone and you're using 2GB or more of data a month. They're catching lots of people doing this.
If you're interested in using AT&T and saving money, just go with a prepaid carrier. AT&T's own prepaid plans are horribly overpriced by comparison.
They just need one Galaxy Nexus's IMEI to do magic.
You enter your imei here and it tells uou what phone you have most of the time.

AT&T can go to hell, they're so damn determined to catch and stop tethering with their unlimited plans, it's like customers are oppressed and are simply rebelling in underground fashion, the Great A, and T's catch them and give them 100 lashes.

If you are using a Galaxy Nexus from Europe on AT&T, does AT&T recognize the phone as a smartphone and force you into a smartphone data plan or can you go for the cheaper "dumbphone" plan?

Dont tell 'em. If they ask tell them its an unlocked nokia n75 or something. They consider that a dumbphone and it was a great smartphone for it's time.

I had an Atrix previously, and they told me, when I called to update my IMEI, that they had to switch my plan to a non-smartphone plan - unlimited for $10 month. I went for it to try it out. Same speeds as with my Atrix.
Then reading another thread about how ATT throttles the non smartphone plan, and you have to call and pester them into hooking you up to a 4G smartphone plan to pump up the speed, I did that. Now it's up another $35 a month, and guess what. NO SPEED DIFFERENCE. I called and asked to be switched back, and they tried a bunch of different settings to keep pulling that $35 out of my wallet, but they just couldn't produce.
Long story short, take the non-smartphone unlimited.
Alright, thanks guys. I guess I am going to get the Galaxy Nexus instead of the SGS 2 now
I guess the question is, how do you go about it?
I'm on tmo right now, need to move to ATT for signal reasons....how do I get this dumbphone plan? I mean I don't wanna enter into a contract so I'll have to go into the store to order it...won't I have to show them my phone and then they'll just be like "uh...that's not a dumbphone?"
I'm using a dumbphone plan with my Vibrant right now. All you have to do is go into the store with a non-smartphone, get a sim, and then put it in your smartphone.

Will At&t flag the Galaxy Nexus in their systems, now that Google Play sells it unlocked? Because i remember back i first got my N1 from the Google a few years back, At&t flagged it and required me to add a smartphone data plan.
Do u guys think this will happen now? I'm thinking of getting the Gnex from google play for my brother, but he doesnt want to have to pay for a real data plan
*the reason that I am concerned about this is because I feel like the Google Play version of the GNEX is a whole new version due to new software version as well as the lack of 900mhz UMTS band (Band III)*
opinions pls ( and facts if possible)
Yes, if you have a smartphone it will eventually get flagged and you will have to add a data plan, this is not limited to the GN.

Its the same exact device that's been on sale in Europe for 5 months now. Its not different. Still an i9250.
As the previous poster said, its not limited to the GNex, they'll kick you off of a non-smartphone plan sooner or later. Its not hard to figure out. Just switch to an AT&T MVNO and save yourself the trouble.

what is a MVNO? it seems to be that the only phones that At&t will add a mandatory data plans to are the ones in their system & of course iPhones. there were plenty of people in the SGS2 thread that were using the international SGS2 on At&t without data plans. same with the international Galaxy note but thanks for the input xD
MVNO is like someone who resells AT&T service.
For example.... Boost Mobile and Virgin resell Sprint's service.

Yes. I got my gf a Samsung Vibrant to put in her ATT family plan. She had previously been using a feature phone that had Web access but no smartphone data plan. It was flagged the second month in.
She switched to Simple Mobile. A MVNO of T-Mobile. $40/month unlimited voice text 3g data.

Of course they will, it's a smart phone. If you want more control over your service, go with pre-paid from any number of vendors.
Also, JBQ verified it's the same pentaband hardware, just a marketing typo.

My sister's vibrant hasn't been flagged for almost a year. This is because the Vibrant's IMEI range is not available to at&t.
The OP is asking whether we think AT&T will be given that imei range now that the GNEX is officially for sale, unlocked in the US, like the nexus one was. IE. Can I get away with dumb phone true unlimited data? This is never monitored or metered, (trust me my sister constantly tethers to 40 gigs of usage per month).

Have been using my Galaxy Nexus on the AT&T $50 unlimited everything, including internet for dumbphones, GoPhone plan for quite a while now and my data still works. Still averaging 5mpbs or more. The good thing about it is that it's not metered. Last month, I used over 6gb of internet and have never been throttled or shut off.
I am concerned that Google will provide AT&T the IMEI numbers of all the Galaxy Nexus that they sell in the play store. If that's the case, then my days of $50 truly unlimited are over. I find that I don't use many minutes, so I might just go back to the $30 T-Mobile plan.
seriously?? I would have thought they would have been more strict about not having smartphones connected to the $50 unlimited everything plan.
Yeah, there are two ways to go about it. $15 internet for quick messaging phones on postpaid or $50 unlimited everything on prepaid.

Yes this was exactly what I'm asking about. :/ I have a feeling that Google might give the carriers the IMEI numbers of the gnex as to not piss them off. I doubt the carriers are happy with Google selling an unlocked phone that is interoperable with the GSM carriers in the US.(similar thing happened two years ago with the nexus one but that was two years ago n Google might be bolder about their reentry into the unlocked phones business)
I wanna keep my $10 data plan D:

So, has anyone that just received the U.S. Galaxy Nexus test this out on AT&T dumphone plan yet?
My friend does it on his international galaxy nexus (uses a gophone sim with a 50/month prepaid), I'm thinking about doing it myself.
So looks like the next (and possibly all) batch of Nexus phones will be GSM. Currently I am grandfathered in on Verizon's Unlimited 4G data and am currently not under contract.
Been trying to think of a way to jump ship to a GSM carrier to get the next Nexus, but still keep my Verizon plan should I want to come back (their coverage in my area is considerably better than any of the GSM carriers), but without keeping it active (put it on hold?). Looks like the best I can do is put the account on hold for a maximum of 90 days.
I've considered the pay as you go plans, but again would lose my Verizon unlimited 4G after 90 days
Thoughts?
Switch to the cheapest possible voice plan, buy a Wifi Hotspot off of ebay and throw your LTE sim in it. Still paying for 2 plans, but at least you'll have unlimited data no matter which GSM carrier you go with.

However there's no point since yiunwant the Nexus as your device... Even with unlimited data, it may not be worth holding on to. Perhaps sell it, I think there's a site or something where you can do so, or craigslist it, I'm sure you'll make a couple hundred and then just go to a Verizon store with them.... worth looking into IMO.

I'm convinced that Samsung and CDMA don't get along at all, whether it's Sprint or Verizon.
EDIT: oh and Sprint still sucks.
I'm getting much better LTE from Motorola hardware around here. It's a shame, I like just about everything else about this phone.

I agree Sprint sucks if you aren't in a decent coverage area, then again that does go for all service providers.
I'm content with my data speeds on Sprint: 15.77Mbps down, 7.91Mbps up.
Mm you guys drive me mad with your LTE im so jealous

Sprint has many problems beyond just their data rates. They're hemmhoraging customers for many reasons. In any case, where I live (Phoenix area) all other carriers and even several MVNO's offer 4g and have done so for several years now. We're the 6th largest city in the US. Even AT&T provides better service than Sprint.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2135690
They're currently offering gimmick enticements to get poeple to join, but hopefully nobody falls for this scam of a company. They rob you blind with their contracts that have "rate creep", constant billing errors in their favor that you have to call to correct every month (and calling involves CSR roulette and re-explaining your situation about 3-5 times to different people,) and then provide horrible service.
They used to be the "value" provider (cheap rates, but you get what you pay for) which I was fine with. However over time I was paying more than verizon customers pay while still retaining the inferior service.

Definitely agree with you there, I used to manage a radio shack which was a 3rd party authorized sprint, verizon, and at the time cingular -> att dealer. Every customer looking for the best "value", or those with low incomes/bad credit...sprint was the go to solution. At the time, they were the only carrier offering somewhat cheap down payments for bad credit. My sprint rep even said once at the bar after a long day of inventory, that they count on the fact that a good percentage of their customers aren't english speaking, don't really read the bills, and therefore do not call to complain. Then to top it off over the last few years they've just wasted money picking up IDEN networks from ww2, attempting to merge, realizing its not effective, "rolling" out wimax that never made it to most areas of NY....and now the LTE being nonexistent, without my AirRave, i never go above 50-75 kb/s downloads on 3g...how can you even call that 3g? lol...;\
Regretting i never kept my employee plans, even if no longer working for the company could have kept $10/month no contract unlimited corporate everything.
Don't have pictures but when I drive up to Indianapolis I can get 1 down, sprint gnex.

After looking through some of the prepaid options, it kind of aggrivates me that I am required to pay for 700 mins a month (or whatever it is) when i think I use under 100 minutes. I barely ever talk on the phone, usually only to the bank or some other quick calls. I need text messaging and about 1GB of data, but I might be able to use 500MB since I use wifi all the time. I'm seriously thinking about buying out of Verizon or just waiting for my contract to end this summer and switch to prepaid. Are there any services that offer either no voice (I'll use VoIP) or like 50 mins a month, with a moderate data cap? I really want to stay in the Nexus crowd, and I've seen that it is possible to flash the VZW Galaxy Nexus to Straight Talk, but the way the "guide" is written, I feel as though I would seriously brick my phone, even though I have a competent knowledge of computers, I know nothing about programming or the internal workings and protocols of cellular systems.
Would it be worth it to try and switch my vzw nexus to straight talk or just sell it and buy a gsm nexus? I've seen some pretty promising looking VoIP apps on the play store and tried a few (better call quality than using the towers too), which one do you guys prefer?
