[Q] How do I go from CM9 to ParanoidAndroid? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi,
I am currently on CM9. I got it by Mobil Odining EL29 kernel and flashing the CM9 rom.
A few days ago I wanted to get ParanoidAndrpod so i Mobil Odined to EL29 and tried to flash the rom but I got a status 7 error in CWM. So I went through a big mess and got back to a stock GB rom then did the first steps to get back to CM9.
What I'm hoping is for someone to teach me how to get to ParanoidAndroid and if I dont like it, how to get back to CM9.
Also any comments regarding performance/stability/battery of ParanoidAndroid would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Edit: I just came across this link
It seems like the only things I did different than the steps listed was using EL29 kernel and not holding down power + vol up on the reboot, it automatically took me to the recovery.
Can someone explain why I got an error when trying to flash the ROM in CWM? It was a chunk of errors and at the end it said Satus 7 error or something like that.
Also, after reading some of the recent posts in the PA thread, it doesnt look like that stable of a rom yet, any suggestions/comments?

When u get status 7 error that means a bad download redownload and cbech md5 if they match your good to go

Rogue recovery also is known to cause this. Alsp don't use format all scripts if you use it.

I was also getting this when I was trying to change from CM9. What worked for me was using one-click Odin back to stock EL29 with my computer, then use mobile Odin EL29 direct boot CWM. Every time I tried to use mobile Odin back to stock first i would get that error. Also, use computer to DL the file then transfer it to your SD card.

Alright guys, thanks for the information! I'm not sure if I'm going to try out PA now since it seems like theres a few things wrong but I'll report back here if I do decide to try it out + the results.
Thanks!

I just need a link or some information on how to install cyanogenmod 9 from EL29, I'm currently running Calkulin's EL29 v3.0, and then I was wondering how do I come back from ICS without bricking?
I'd appreciate the response so i don't screw up my wonderful new phone! ^^

To go back to GB just flash the EL26 kernel with CWM through Odin. When rebooting hold power + volume up until it boots into recovery and flash from there.

FYI - OP on the CM9 page for the rom the very first post has it notated that for the CM9 install guide which is the link that has been posted above. I commend you on being careful but just so you know this forum has more than enough info in it to ensure you do everything correct and minimize your chances of bricking..

I've heard to odin just the el26 kernel + cwm and also the whole el26 rom before flashing ICS, more specifically the AOsP variations so which is it? Or which is safer? It would kind of make sense to Odin the whole rom to restore a gb nandroid. There's just so many conflicting methods its cornfuzzling

No not really conflicting if you look at them slowly. Its basically get back to a GB kernel at the end of the day. They say to odin it since you do not want to or have any other way to get a GB kernel on your phone if you are on ICS. Now you could flash from ICS but that is what people are trying to avoid since it could cause a brick.
Basically: When on ICS
1. Odin a GB CWM recovery(now others have used EL29 and Rogue recoveries as well) I personally use a stock CWM recovery from CM7 and Miui
2. From there you can wipe and flash and do nandroids as normal.
Option: Safest bet
1. One Click Odin your choice of any of the GB stock roms by sfhub
I have used both methods so far with no problems. I had CM9 on my phone then used odin to go back to the recovery used with CM7 and then I nandroid back my UnNamed Rom. I did this a few times without issue. I have never heard of any issues with anyone using any of the above two methods I mentioned. If someone has please inform us

I was more confused about whether to Odin(mobileodin) just the kernel + cwm or the entire rom, all the install instructions say Odin kernel with cwm(usually el26) which is what I'm using for ics, I use rogue gunslinger for GB, but then I've seen ppl say to Odin the entire rom before restoring/upgrading/changing roms so i was like
Wtf which is it do I Odin the kernel or the whole rom when i upgrade :-| I've been trying to figure that out for a cpl days b4 I upgrade my AOKP to build 31, cuz I really don't want a paperweight

I've searched around and I don't know how to just odin a kernel, so I use sfhubs one-click back to el26 then I use autoroot to install el26 +cwm.
I would like to just odin a kernel and flash from there, but i am unsure of the procedure, do you do this:
phone to download mode and connect to odin, use PDA slot and browse to kernel, hit start or GO or whatever it is, then when it starts to reboot, pwr+vlm up to get into recovery, then get my flash on from there?
I use mobile Odin for the kernel alone but I believe in PC Odin you can just select PDA and choose the kernel. Tar and flash it that way then when it starts to reboot either catch the volume up + power on the splash screen or do like I do and snatch the battery real quick and the boot to recovery, everytime I try to hit it while its rebooting Im too slow

I havent used mobile odin, but I hear nothing but good things, so I think I am gonna grab it and try it out. That way I wont need to be at a PC to get my flash on.
With mobile odin, do I keep the kernel on my sdcard, same place I put roms and such? And when using mobile odin, if the file is *.tar.md5, do I remove the .md5 from the file name first? Do I use the flash firmware option?
I've done this at least 25 times recently; so easy, I'll post instructions here again.
1. get Mobile Odin(time saver to the max)
2. Get EL26 kernel (TAR version)
3. flash EL26 kernel in Mobile Odin (takes 10 seconds)
4. Boot into recovery(you will have the proper one now!)
5. Flash away
if you do this either coming from A GB rom to ICS, or going back to one, Guaranteed success...
Simple as can be; not sure why this keeps getting asked.....
The kernel is 8.1 mb, which exceeds the attachment size, so I can't post it here, but its all over this forum..

Yea u can keep em in a folder on internal SD that's what I do and just open the location it will find all tar files in that location then just select and follow directions, mOdin works really good its quick and no flash counter in crease or yellow triangle. Its alot easier to flash ics than having to go to the PC cuz u can just Odin el26+cwm kernel boot to recovery and get ur flash on without all the hassle of drivers and connecting a USB etc

My question was for when going back to gb from ics if I needed to Odin the whole rom, I had seen both kernel+cwm only and whole rom and just wanted to make sure if I just flashed the kernel only I'd be OK more for clarification than an actual how to for me since I know how to Odin both, just wanted to make sure I was odining the right things b4 I jumped and landed on a brick after I had seen someone say to Odin the whole rom I wanted to be sure I was doing it right since I had seen both ways mentioned. Its a little more confusing than my damn evo where I'm always on the same recovery no matter what, and a bit scary with the bricks flying around like a construction site filled with monkeys on meth

Yea ur post cleared it up for me, just gets confusing when. Theres multiple methods recommended I was 99% sure I just needed to Odin the kernel only but wanted the clarification before I jumped off that bridge, not too comfortable jumping off a bridge when I'm not sure how deep the water is

well, like the asshole who pushed me in the deep end of the pool when I was 12 and didn't know how to swim told me, "figure it out or else", sometimes you gotta just go for it!!
Actually, I am nervous too when I try something new the first time, but, once you figure out who really knows what they are talking about, its easy to just pm them and ask them how they do it..
You obviously know your stuff man, so you will be an expert with this phone in no time!!

Quick question.. I can flash EL26 kernel again in mobile odin and should be able to restore my Blazer backup without any issues, correct? Blazer was backed up using Rogue EL29 kernel. Thanks!
Plus there's 5 android devices in my house all with different flashing methods it gets confusing keeping em all straight, got the evo4g, et4g, kindle fire, MoPho, and a gNote the et4g is the first Sammy I've used with Odin, my first android was an intercrap I mean intercept and it used the patched swupdater instead of Odin, so I'm still getting the hang of this method. I can flash the evo, kindle, intercept and photon blindfolded and drunker than a slut on prom night

I don't know how you keep all that **** straight; in my house, we ALL go with one "brand" of product, just to avoid that nightmare!!
If someone doesn't like it, I tell them that they get no tech support from me if they don't go with "the flow"!

[Q] Frankenstein Ego

I flashed this rom and kept my EL29 kernel. Does that mean in order to get this Rom and get my CWM recovery back I have to reset my phone to stock and start all over again with the EL26? Also, is the swype keyboard in the rapps, and how do i get the face unlock to work?
When you flashed Frankenstein rom, your kernel changed to the FE21 kernel included with the rom so not sure what you mean by you kept el29 kernel since that's not compatible with ICS. The reason you have stock android recovery now is because of all the bricking issues performing certain functions in custom ICS recovery so devs are leaving out custom recovery from their roms. So yes, when you want to change roms, backup, etc., you must go back to the el26 cwm kernel first and flash, backup, etc. from there. Not sure about your last two questions since I'm not using that rom. Let me know if you need anything else.

Not to sure what you mean by that. If you're saying what I think you're saying, yes you must use el26 cwm kernel whenever flashing anything ICS related or backing up or restoring. Using anything else and you risk bricking your phone.

Slick_rick is correct, as far as Swype i just sign up for the Swype beta from you phone browser to get a download for it, that way i always have it to restore with titanium so i can get Swype on any rom. There's also some Swype keyboards floating around in the app section but i haven't tried them. They should work though.

Wow... I needed this thread. I just recently went through what I thought were all the instructions to flash this rom. I had previously used the PD Odin executable routine to upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS. I saw the reviews on this rom and really liked what I saw. I used Odin 1.85 to set up CWM-El26 so I could flash this ROM. I got everything working ( I do get that yellow triangle on reboots) but I did notice the CWMod Recovery does not stay on the phone. It reverts back to the basic ICS Recovery (where I GUESS you cannot flash zip files). Now all this said... After flashing this ROM, I am still on FE16. Is there something else I am missing.
I got into rooting when I had my Dinosaur Moment, and now I have that itch again. Thanks again for all your help!

Swype is in the removed apps. You have to Unknown Sources checked under device administration. You can mount your phone, add the swype.apk file to the phone, and install it using the astro file manager. I still go back and forth between swype and the stock ICS keyboard. Word prediction seems to work better in the stock.

Oh well your cwm recovery disappeared because it wasnt packed into the kernel that came with the rom you flashed. And you can get rid of the yellow triangle using a USB jig or an app called triangle away. Just Google search something like "triangle away apk+chainfire+xda" and you should be able to find it.

Hey... I hit the thank button but I got the triangle away and it worked like a charm! Thanks again. Maybe they can get the CWM 5.0.2.7 to stay packaged in the ROM setups in the future!
so i tried to redo this flash with the el26 kernel. but then my phone started acting crazy, telling me that the calendar storage stopped working. finally after putting frankenstein back on my phone, it stopped coming up. the only problem im experiencing now is that i cant download pics in my text messaging. but i can use my 3g, 4g, and wifi for everything else. I dunno if this is because im in PR or because i messed something up. Please give me some feedback if you know anything
You started up with el26? That will never work with this rom. You need an ics kernel.

i know. but when you flash the rom it changes to ics. im saying, initially i started with the el29. QBkind77 advises to flash it after having the el26 installed, but i was too hasty.
Hmmh...i only ever do el26 never el29. I'm not sure what happened then. You are correct if you flashed the ROM it is ics. It must have been a bad flash or a bad download as well, sorry.

Sounds like the emmc data corruption bug, there's s thread about it in general somewhere. Basically sounds like you damaged the data partition which for now means a permabrick, they're looking for a fix in the thread in general but last I checked one hasn't been found yet

Please check your Odin log and try full pkg - not Nodata ver. If it hits the eMMC lockup it should hang on data.img if I remember correctly. Also trying to access data partition by ADB, such as dd, should cause the phone to hang until battery is pulled.
Once verified only solution is replacement at the moment.

I'm also concerned when you say you were using Agat's recovery when you bricked (if you are bricked). You flashed an AOKP rom, which probably has it's own kernel and recovery. Anyway, you can't use his recovery with AOKP...not compatible.
I didnt see were you tried el29 oneclick??? All i seen is that you tried another ics oneclick! If you havemt tried el29 oneclick give that a shot. I seem to think that flashing from ics-ics roms in cwm recovery or any recovery was bad??? I have always used odin or mobile odin just way safer.

This might be your problem, you need to flash back to GB i believe try the EL29 one click like I said and see what that does for you? It may be a soft brick if you still have your recovery intact! And the fact that the oneclick you did install passed is good since it passed !!!
I think your problem may be that your CAPS LOCK is stuck in the ALL CAPS position... It might be confusing the computer when you are typing commands into it... Jk!
But from the sounds of it the problem may be that you're running a ROM with an incompatible kernel. I would recommend doing sfhub's EL29 one-click rooted full restore. You're able to get to both recovery and download mode so it leads me to believe the phone is functional but you're just not doing the right things to get it functional enough for you to use it.

Good luck!
Damn!!! That just happened to me right now!!! I am soooo frustrated. I have flashed a million times and i tried that aokp 39 and i am in same situation! I was on wicked sensations and AGAT's had no problem going ics to ics. I usually don't take a chance and just use mobile odin but this time i was not paying attention. Please let me know if you find a fix

Help a super noob root and flash his phone

Ok I know i am supposed to read the Faqs and tutorials. But after wading through pages of content I have come out more confused than going in.
Basically all I want to do is get a new ROM (Cyanogenmod?) onto my phone in order to fix my stock ICS's broken bluetooth functionality, battery drain and overall performance. I loved this phone as GB but it has become the worst pile of stinky poo since ICS came along. My baseband ver is Fl24.
Now I have no clue where to begin. What's an Odin count? Kernels, modems?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
If you don't want to read then go watch some of qbking77 videos

You're on stock unrooted right? First go to the android development for this phone go to the modems thread and find the one click FL24 rooted. Next make sure you have drivers installed on your computer and put your phone into download mode(While the phone is off power+volume down until you see the screen) and connect it to your computer. After that extract the one click and connect your phone which is now in download mode. Let it run and its should say success.
Ok now your rooted now to flashing the ROM.
Download mobile Odin from the play store(it costs but theres a free version on xda somewhere just Google it) Get the paid version if you woukd like to donate because of all of his hard work. Next download the el26 kernel(the repack with clockwork mod) and put it on the root of your SD. Finally download the version of cm9 you want and put it onto the root of your SD card.
Installing the ROM(You're almost done )
Open mobile Odin and when it asks you for the xda download just hit cancel. Now hit kernel and select the el26 kernal. Make sure you have 50% battery do all the safety precautions and then flash it. Take the battery out of your phone. Reboot to recovery(power and volume up) press volume up and volume down back to back a couple of times to make the power button work. Now wipe data, cache, and dalvick cache. Finally flash the ROM and reeboot.

I think there is also a one-click el26 with CWM floating around in the Android Development section. I've used it with success. YMMV.
Thanks for the walkthrough!
Those qbking77 videos helped alot. After 2 hours of research I have finally managed to get Wild for the Night onto my phone. Only difference is, I used the EL29 Directboot kernel. Not sure if I used the correct ver but hey it worked.

Regarding the EL29 Directboot kernel...is this the only way to flash for the TW ROMs that don't have custom recovery then reinstall the original kernel (GB08 in my case)?

Yep. You can also use an Agats Repack for JB to flash the kernel.

No CWM on EL29 + EL26 Recoverys

I am having issues booting into CWM EL26 + EL29 Recoveries.
I am able to odin the kernal but it just sticks on the Samsung logo if I try to access CWM.
It used to reboot and either go right into CWM or I would do Volume Up and Power to access.
I am currently on Paradox Rom GB27. I am trying to flash a ROM that needs EL26 or EL29 but cant access.
Any idea why I cannot access?
Also, if I have the charger plugged in (usb to comp), the screen gets stuck on a battery icon like its charging but doesnt move.
(think thats just because the charger is plugged in) BUT it seems that whatever this kernal is doing it the phone it is Freezing it at that first boot point.
I reflashed GB27 so im fine for now but just want to solve this mystery.
Any help appreciated! thanks!!

I use Mobile Odin to flash el29 direct boot kernel..and have never had an issue.. There is a lite version of mobile Odin on xda.. I would try that.. Make sure the md5's match on the kernel.. Mobile Odin will check it for you..

I can try mobile odin. I have the full version. I will give it a shot. The thing is
I had those kernals for over a year, always used them, worked fine.
Now all of a sudden they dont. I tried downloading agai , checked md5, everything appears correct.
I will post back the results.

No luck with mobile odin. Same thing. Stuck at the White Samsung Logo.
I am out of options. Unless there is another kernel I can try that is similar to el26 + el29.
Its weird how gb27 works fine... I just dont understand that. Could something be broke or misconfigured on my phone to not allow
installing el26 + el29?

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it. I will stick with Paradox for now.
I wanted to try multi window rom but flashing on gb27 gives force closes and constant reboots.
Is it possible that once im on gb27, I cant go back and flash a gb rom? Ive done it
Before so thats why im stumped. Its like my phone doesnt support it.
I went on rwilco and downloaded multiple files and made sure they were with cwm.
They all do the same thing. Heres one for you... would water damage cause those kernels not to work?
Phones fine besides the kernel issue.
Also is it possible when doing cleanup on my phone and deleting
Old backups cause an issue? I thought to myself... wait I can restore an old rom with
El29! Lol no where to be found, already got rid of them.

I've flashed many ROMs..from GB to JB and back the other way..lol. Never had that problem..you could try to go into recovery and flash the format all x 2.. Then flash the el26 kernel zip..reboot recovery.. I don't know...might work..The format all x 2 will get ya ready for flashing GB/ICS so it might help..once on el26 you can use jb format all x 2 to get ready for the new jb ROM flash.. Just a thought...

Try doing an Odin stock rooted Rom flash on ICS and then working from there using mobile Odin. Sometimes I can't do the pc Odin for those kernels so I use mobile Odin and it works perfect.
If you're trying to flash the new SHOShock Rom by TD then I'm having issues with that too. My phone gets stuck on a boot cycle and if I try to flash a nandroid back up then it gets stuck on the Samsung screen. Only way out of it was flashing a GB27 rooted stock Rom in pc Odin.

Good call, @FuMMoD.. I had told him about using mobile Odin...And I figured a back to stock ICS rooted then flash the el29 would be the next thing to try..I just hadn't heard from him if the wipe zip had helped.. Good looking out.. Nice to see people trying to help..This is the best forum...in my opinion..

Just going off from where you left off man. I figured I would put my 2 cents in cause it sure can be a headache sometimes. I noticed when I'm out of luck pc Odin always saves me. I agree this community is great when it comes to helping each other.

Had a similar issue yesterday. I flashed the el29 recovery without wiping the /preload first, and it would not boot. Booted back into gb27 agat recovery via Odin, wiped the /preload, flashed el29 zip, and a successful boot. Don't know if it is the same issue, but that is my story...

How did you wipe the preload? I'm having issues flashing shostock and that might help me successfully flash it. Thanks!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 4
First, download the el29 recovery kernel zip located in the rwilco repository.
Next either flash, or already be on the gb27 agat recovery kernel (also can be found in repository).
While in agat recovery, navigate to "mounts and storage"
Select "format /preload" (and whatever else you want to wipe out)
Back out, then "install zip from SD card"
Flash the el29 zip and you should be good to go.
