Help a super noob root and flash his phone - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Ok I know i am supposed to read the Faqs and tutorials. But after wading through pages of content I have come out more confused than going in.
Basically all I want to do is get a new ROM (Cyanogenmod?) onto my phone in order to fix my stock ICS's broken bluetooth functionality, battery drain and overall performance. I loved this phone as GB but it has become the worst pile of stinky poo since ICS came along. My baseband ver is Fl24.
Now I have no clue where to begin. What's an Odin count? Kernels, modems?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you don't want to read then go watch some of qbking77 videos

You're on stock unrooted right? First go to the android development for this phone go to the modems thread and find the one click FL24 rooted. Next make sure you have drivers installed on your computer and put your phone into download mode(While the phone is off power+volume down until you see the screen) and connect it to your computer. After that extract the one click and connect your phone which is now in download mode. Let it run and its should say success.
Ok now your rooted now to flashing the ROM.
Download mobile Odin from the play store(it costs but theres a free version on xda somewhere just Google it) Get the paid version if you woukd like to donate because of all of his hard work. Next download the el26 kernel(the repack with clockwork mod) and put it on the root of your SD. Finally download the version of cm9 you want and put it onto the root of your SD card.
Installing the ROM(You're almost done )
Open mobile Odin and when it asks you for the xda download just hit cancel. Now hit kernel and select the el26 kernal. Make sure you have 50% battery do all the safety precautions and then flash it. Take the battery out of your phone. Reboot to recovery(power and volume up) press volume up and volume down back to back a couple of times to make the power button work. Now wipe data, cache, and dalvick cache. Finally flash the ROM and reeboot.

I think there is also a one-click el26 with CWM floating around in the Android Development section. I've used it with success. YMMV.

Thanks for the walkthrough!
Those qbking77 videos helped alot. After 2 hours of research I have finally managed to get Wild for the Night onto my phone. Only difference is, I used the EL29 Directboot kernel. Not sure if I used the correct ver but hey it worked.

Regarding the EL29 Directboot kernel...is this the only way to flash for the TW ROMs that don't have custom recovery then reinstall the original kernel (GB08 in my case)?

Yep. You can also use an Agats Repack for JB to flash the kernel.

Samsung Epic update qbking77

I watched QBking77 's video for the samsung epic 4g that he released on oct 23 i believe. This video explained how to gain superuser access and how to root. I did this fine and I know its rooted. I just don't know what I am supposed to do next now that this new (gingerbread) update has been released. Am i able to update now that i am rooted and have superuser access? is this what i should do? I was hoping to have the most up to date of everything and it seems to me that ice cream sandwhich or something like that is hte number 1 thing.
Please help me. im lost.

You can either Odin back to EC05 to accept the OTA (cannot do rooted) or simply flash a new Gingerbread ROM, a bunch of them in Development, and then if you want (don't need to) if you are on baseband ending in EC05 can flash the file that will update your modem to EI22 (the latest modem). qbking77 has videos for all this stuff too.
Well. what do you recommend? I am not an expert at this and i don't know the best answer. I still have EC05. The only thing ive done is add an open garden and bought tegra overclock and have it overclocked ot 1.52 or so.
Thanks again for your help.

Go to Development, download and flash a GB ROM, I highly recommend and support Legendary ROM. Then it is optional to go into the stickies there and grab the EI22 flashable updater in the Modems thread.

so will i still be on FROYO if i flash one of these recommended roms?
If i heard you correct, i will be flashing a rom which is like an optimized/ specialized OS for android's FROYO build. And then I will get the EI22 flashable updater in the modems thread (EI22 is gingerbread?).
Just so i understand hte process, what is the point of flashing a rom before updating to Gingerbread?
Also, i will not be updating with sprints OTA update because that will mess stuff up?
Thanks . You're answering questions that i've had forever.

No you will have Gingerbread. The modems are independent of the ROM and your choice. The ROM I suggested is EI22 firmware code optimized GB. Then if you want the baseband (MODEM) to be updated you can flash the modem delta I told you about. The OTA will not mess anything up, just more steps and more work to root.

I've read your responses and thought about them and read about them and thought over and over. I don't know what im supposed to do. Forgive me for being so slow.
Im rooted and superuser and my stats are
model number :sph-d700
firmware version: 2.2.1
baseband version:s:d700.0.5s.EC05
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
build number : froyo.ec05
hardware version D700.0.5
I just dont understand what you are saying and ive been reading around on wikipedia and stuff. I guess im just slow. Thanks for your help.
Wow! I am so glad I came across this thread. I registered with this forum so I could ask the exact same question. (I watched the video and really really didn't want to look like a noob)
I have the exact same specs as above:
model number :sph-d700
firmware version: 2.2.1
baseband version:s:d700.0.5s.EC05
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
build number : froyo.ec05

I am rooted and have clockwordmod 2.5.1.0 because I did some one click root thing a while back. I tried the OTA update (because last time it worked, I just lost my root) but this time it didn't.
I followed the instructions on how to unroot in QBKing77's video on youtube watch?v=xJ5XZIlGwNY (Sorry too new to post links) with no luck. I even watched a couple of other videos that said they were updated versions, but I think they were for the Galaxy S II.
I was trying to go back to stock and get the OTA update, but thought I bricked my phone because all I would get was the little phone yellow exclamation point and computer. Every .tar or whatever file I had in the PDA would fail. I changed out usb plugs and tried two different computers both on windows 7 one 64 bit and the other 32.
Is it really as simple as me booting in to clockworkmod and selecting a gingerbread ROM? I thought I ran across a "really close to stock" GB ROM but with a couple of fixes.
Is it really that easy, and I wasted about 4 hours trying to unroot my phone?
Many Thanks In Advance.
Ricky
The latest for the Epic is Gingerbread. Click on my signature that says Are You Legendary. Download that ROM. Flash that ROM in clockworkmod. Check Qbking's videos on flashing a ROM. Then you will have the latest Gingerbread. Then go into the top of Development and go into the modems thread and get and flash the ec05toei22 file.

Rick and bret, you both are on ec05 but neither can get ota to ei22 cause you are rooted. Your 2 options:
1. Odin to stock ec05 using qbking77's video. You will then get the ota. This will wipe your contacts, etc. So BEFORE doing this, go to the market and get both call log and sms backup & restore. You can also export contacts to sd. Once on ec05 base, restore all. Do it before ota. No root or cwm. You will have to do the new 1click video specific to ei22. Look for the update video.
2. Do a backup in cwm. Find an ei22 rom and put it on your sd card. I recommend cleangb by toadlife. Get the rfs version. Boot into cwm and install zip from sd. Select the rom file. When done, you will be rooted ei22 w/cwm. Then boot cwm and restore/advanced/restore data. You will have all your stuff back.

I have a couple more questions.
What is the point of ODIN?
What is the point of clockworkmod and where do i get the most recent?
Why aren't we flashing? to ice cream sandwhich which is the most recent version out there?
thanks.
Also, which program flashes us? is this odin that does this?
If you are not confident with all of this, research.
CWM - Thing on the phone that flashes custom ROMs and certain modems (replaces the normal recovery) To find the newest, look for it and then flash the zip. It is specific for the epic so make sure you don't get one for the wrong phone
Odin - Flashes things from the computer. Used to downgrade modems or go to complete stock or flash an Odin rom (rare)
We don't have ICS because it takes a lot of time for our devs to port that to the epic. It isn't just copy and paste. It requires a lot of hard coding and will take a long time and we are waiting until cm9 to even start to get in to it. Also sprint and samsung EOLd the epic so we will never get ICS.
Gingerbread actually came out on July 24, 2011 but we just got it recently on the epic

Ill give you a step by step.
You probably already have CWM.
First put legendary on the SD card then follow this:
1. Watch and follow this http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v=qnk6lfBh5rI
2. In CWM (volume down, camera, power while off) choose wipe data, then choose zip from SD card (camera button to select, volume to move, back to go back), then navigate to legendary and select it

Nope. One clicks don't work on 2.3.5. You need to use Odin to install CWM 5.027, then pull the battery before it boots, power up into CWM first then flash a custom GB ROM.

Why not just have him install the gb3.tar kernel instead of "pull the battery before it boots" much easy and less fearfull.

No but it qbkings tutorial he says to flash the kernel first.... then flash Cwm just saying it would be less chance of error. Something in the stock kernel has a script that searches for cwm and causes it to delet after the first boot anyways.....

Exactly! And no worries about it overwriting recovery as long as you flash a custom gb rom (there is a mostly stock one if trying to stay stock) as the kernel will be included with the rom... don't let biggorn scare you... its not scary to pull the battery after odin ;-)

Flashing a custom rom.... and a custom kernel.
Suggestions: legendary 2.2 and the samurai or shadow kernel
MarcusantRom revival v2..... just go through the android development forums to see which rom you'd like to use. Just be careful what your trying to download thought. If your Rom is BML or MTD then you have to download that type of kernel.

haha forgot there was a second page..... use remember you can go from bml to bml, or bml to mtd, mtd to mtd type roms. YOU CAN NOT JUST FLASH FROM MTD TO BML!!! you must odin back to ec05 and make sure repartition is checked and use the victory pit. happy playing
just remember though... after reading the information on these forums, and you are still unsure or whatever... ask questions, ask questions , ask questions...

I've heard to odin just the el26 kernel + cwm and also the whole el26 rom before flashing ICS, more specifically the AOsP variations so which is it? Or which is safer? It would kind of make sense to Odin the whole rom to restore a gb nandroid. There's just so many conflicting methods its cornfuzzling

No not really conflicting if you look at them slowly. Its basically get back to a GB kernel at the end of the day. They say to odin it since you do not want to or have any other way to get a GB kernel on your phone if you are on ICS. Now you could flash from ICS but that is what people are trying to avoid since it could cause a brick.
Basically: When on ICS
1. Odin a GB CWM recovery(now others have used EL29 and Rogue recoveries as well) I personally use a stock CWM recovery from CM7 and Miui
2. From there you can wipe and flash and do nandroids as normal.
Option: Safest bet
1. One Click Odin your choice of any of the GB stock roms by sfhub
I have used both methods so far with no problems. I had CM9 on my phone then used odin to go back to the recovery used with CM7 and then I nandroid back my UnNamed Rom. I did this a few times without issue. I have never heard of any issues with anyone using any of the above two methods I mentioned. If someone has please inform us

I was more confused about whether to Odin(mobileodin) just the kernel + cwm or the entire rom, all the install instructions say Odin kernel with cwm(usually el26) which is what I'm using for ics, I use rogue gunslinger for GB, but then I've seen ppl say to Odin the entire rom before restoring/upgrading/changing roms so i was like
Wtf which is it do I Odin the kernel or the whole rom when i upgrade :-| I've been trying to figure that out for a cpl days b4 I upgrade my AOKP to build 31, cuz I really don't want a paperweight

I've searched around and I don't know how to just odin a kernel, so I use sfhubs one-click back to el26 then I use autoroot to install el26 +cwm.
I would like to just odin a kernel and flash from there, but i am unsure of the procedure, do you do this:
phone to download mode and connect to odin, use PDA slot and browse to kernel, hit start or GO or whatever it is, then when it starts to reboot, pwr+vlm up to get into recovery, then get my flash on from there?
I use mobile Odin for the kernel alone but I believe in PC Odin you can just select PDA and choose the kernel. Tar and flash it that way then when it starts to reboot either catch the volume up + power on the splash screen or do like I do and snatch the battery real quick and the boot to recovery, everytime I try to hit it while its rebooting Im too slow

I havent used mobile odin, but I hear nothing but good things, so I think I am gonna grab it and try it out. That way I wont need to be at a PC to get my flash on.
With mobile odin, do I keep the kernel on my sdcard, same place I put roms and such? And when using mobile odin, if the file is *.tar.md5, do I remove the .md5 from the file name first? Do I use the flash firmware option?
I've done this at least 25 times recently; so easy, I'll post instructions here again.
1. get Mobile Odin(time saver to the max)
2. Get EL26 kernel (TAR version)
3. flash EL26 kernel in Mobile Odin (takes 10 seconds)
4. Boot into recovery(you will have the proper one now!)
5. Flash away
if you do this either coming from A GB rom to ICS, or going back to one, Guaranteed success...
Simple as can be; not sure why this keeps getting asked.....
The kernel is 8.1 mb, which exceeds the attachment size, so I can't post it here, but its all over this forum..

Yea u can keep em in a folder on internal SD that's what I do and just open the location it will find all tar files in that location then just select and follow directions, mOdin works really good its quick and no flash counter in crease or yellow triangle. Its alot easier to flash ics than having to go to the PC cuz u can just Odin el26+cwm kernel boot to recovery and get ur flash on without all the hassle of drivers and connecting a USB etc

My question was for when going back to gb from ics if I needed to Odin the whole rom, I had seen both kernel+cwm only and whole rom and just wanted to make sure if I just flashed the kernel only I'd be OK more for clarification than an actual how to for me since I know how to Odin both, just wanted to make sure I was odining the right things b4 I jumped and landed on a brick after I had seen someone say to Odin the whole rom I wanted to be sure I was doing it right since I had seen both ways mentioned. Its a little more confusing than my damn evo where I'm always on the same recovery no matter what, and a bit scary with the bricks flying around like a construction site filled with monkeys on meth

well, like the asshole who pushed me in the deep end of the pool when I was 12 and didn't know how to swim told me, "figure it out or else", sometimes you gotta just go for it!!
Actually, I am nervous too when I try something new the first time, but, once you figure out who really knows what they are talking about, its easy to just pm them and ask them how they do it..
You obviously know your stuff man, so you will be an expert with this phone in no time!!

Quick question.. I can flash EL26 kernel again in mobile odin and should be able to restore my Blazer backup without any issues, correct? Blazer was backed up using Rogue EL29 kernel. Thanks!
Plus there's 5 android devices in my house all with different flashing methods it gets confusing keeping em all straight, got the evo4g, et4g, kindle fire, MoPho, and a gNote the et4g is the first Sammy I've used with Odin, my first android was an intercrap I mean intercept and it used the patched swupdater instead of Odin, so I'm still getting the hang of this method. I can flash the evo, kindle, intercept and photon blindfolded and drunker than a slut on prom night

I don't know how you keep all that **** straight; in my house, we ALL go with one "brand" of product, just to avoid that nightmare!!
If someone doesn't like it, I tell them that they get no tech support from me if they don't go with "the flow"!

[Q] Kernal Flash Messup

I am trying to upgrade my phone from ICS to JB. I flashed Stock GB27 through the odin one-click and every loaded/booted fine. Now I wanted to flashed tdunham's rom "Recalked in Jellybean". In order to flash the rom I have to use EL26 or EL29 cwm kernel to flash it. I used the odin one-click of EL26_Stock_CWM5 (Christ 41 G) and it rebooted. But now it is stuck at the boot screen with a yellow triangle. I'm not sure really what to do at this point to fix it. I've found videos online but they all show the phones going past the boot screen to actually get rid of it.

Reboot into recovery by holding down power button and volume up. That will get you into cwm. From there, wipe data, cache, dalvik, and flash rom. Reboot, enjoy

Thanks that got me into cwm but for some reason the power button will not let me choose any options. Not sure if it is lagging or being unresponsive. The volume up and down buttons at least work.

So now for some odd reason the power button is working now..... Quick question: I did not load tdunham's rom onto my phone yet. If I can not get past the boot screen after wiping the cache/dalvik what should I do then? Re-install the stock GB27 rom to get the old kernel back? I'm assuming the wipe data will do a factory reset so that would re-install the old kernel itself?

Td's rom has cwm. If you get bootloop, reboot into recovery wipe everything, and try again. Still getting boot loop, probably bad download. Dl again using computer instead of phone then save to phone before flashing again

Did a data wipe and still have a bootloop with the yellow triangle at the bottom. I'm guessing it is the el26 kernel that is causing it. This is from his OP page:
3. Install EL26 (Chris41G) kernel or EL29 Directboot kernel.
They can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1662295
( Look for: GB - Stock EL26 Repacked Kernel or GB - Direct Boot CWM )
Note: For success, EL26 & EL29 kernels are recommended for flashing this rom!
I used the EL26 one and it seems to not to be working with the stock GB27 rom (At least through the odin method). I've read that Stock rooted JB kernels for some reason do not play nice with custom JB roms. Am I able to get into Odin mode safely from the boot screen and can I just used the one-click Stock GB27 again to reinstall everything back to stock?

Sure you can, and it sounds like a bad download. His Rom is solid. Try downloading it, and matching md5, and its not the el26 either. It's a work horse for flashing, and solid as the day is long. Sounds like bad dl. Don't give up

I have his rom downloaded but I have not flashed it yet. When I meant stock GB27 I meant this: [ROM][ODIN][TAR]SPH-D710 GB27 (GB27 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Root/Stock) from http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=166. That is the one I wanted to re-flash in odin to see if it will let me reboot back but I do not know if re-flashing with a yellow triangle will screw things up. I have not clue why I needed to flash a EL26/EL29 kernel to flash his rom though which is how this all started.
Well I re-flashed the Stock GB27 again and everything work with the yellow triangle gone. I guess I have to put custom rom and Jellybean X2 Format utility on my phone before I flash the kernel. Just sucks the counter is going to go up cause of odin -_-. Welp lets try this again. Thank you for all your help jdsingle76.

Instead of using PC Odin. You can grab Mobile Odin lite 3.65 by chainfire and flash the
DirectBoot EL29 Recovery Kernel.
You mentioned you don't know why you need the
EL26/29 Kernel recovery. It's a safe recovery
to flash roms and recommended to do so.
Use PC odin, the directions provided are a stable sure fire way to fix the problem. If you're going to go the Mobile Odin route, get the pro version. The lite version requires you to find and download an extra file, which can complicate things if you're unsure, and flashing the wrong one WILL cause a brick.
Trust the more experienced users here and it will save you time, trouble, and possibly a device:good:

No CWM on EL29 + EL26 Recoverys

I am having issues booting into CWM EL26 + EL29 Recoveries.
I am able to odin the kernal but it just sticks on the Samsung logo if I try to access CWM.
It used to reboot and either go right into CWM or I would do Volume Up and Power to access.
I am currently on Paradox Rom GB27. I am trying to flash a ROM that needs EL26 or EL29 but cant access.
Any idea why I cannot access?
Also, if I have the charger plugged in (usb to comp), the screen gets stuck on a battery icon like its charging but doesnt move.
(think thats just because the charger is plugged in) BUT it seems that whatever this kernal is doing it the phone it is Freezing it at that first boot point.
I reflashed GB27 so im fine for now but just want to solve this mystery.
Any help appreciated! thanks!!

No luck with mobile odin. Same thing. Stuck at the White Samsung Logo.
I am out of options. Unless there is another kernel I can try that is similar to el26 + el29.
Its weird how gb27 works fine... I just dont understand that. Could something be broke or misconfigured on my phone to not allow

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it. I will stick with Paradox for now.
I wanted to try multi window rom but flashing on gb27 gives force closes and constant reboots.
Is it possible that once im on gb27, I cant go back and flash a gb rom? Ive done it
Before so thats why im stumped. Its like my phone doesnt support it.
I went on rwilco and downloaded multiple files and made sure they were with cwm.
They all do the same thing. Heres one for you... would water damage cause those kernels not to work?
Phones fine besides the kernel issue.
Also is it possible when doing cleanup on my phone and deleting
Old backups cause an issue? I thought to myself... wait I can restore an old rom with
El29! Lol no where to be found, already got rid of them.

Try doing an Odin stock rooted Rom flash on ICS and then working from there using mobile Odin. Sometimes I can't do the pc Odin for those kernels so I use mobile Odin and it works perfect.
If you're trying to flash the new SHOShock Rom by TD then I'm having issues with that too. My phone gets stuck on a boot cycle and if I try to flash a nandroid back up then it gets stuck on the Samsung screen. Only way out of it was flashing a GB27 rooted stock Rom in pc Odin.

I had told him about using mobile Odin...And I figured a back to stock ICS rooted then flash the el29 would be the next thing to try..I just hadn't heard from him if the wipe zip had helped.. Good looking out.. Nice to see people trying to help..This is the best forum...in my opinion..

Just going off from where you left off man. I figured I would put my 2 cents in cause it sure can be a headache sometimes. I noticed when I'm out of luck pc Odin always saves me. I agree this community is great when it comes to helping each other.

Had a similar issue yesterday. I flashed the el29 recovery without wiping the /preload first, and it would not boot. Booted back into gb27 agat recovery via Odin, wiped the /preload, flashed el29 zip, and a successful boot. Don't know if it is the same issue, but that is my story...

How did you wipe the preload? I'm having issues flashing shostock and that might help me successfully flash it. Thanks!

First, download the el29 recovery kernel zip located in the rwilco repository.
Next either flash, or already be on the gb27 agat recovery kernel (also can be found in repository).
While in agat recovery, navigate to "mounts and storage"
Select "format /preload" (and whatever else you want to wipe out)
Back out, then "install zip from SD card"
Flash the el29 zip and you should be good to go.
