This is a real weird one. I am trying to figure out a way to bypass sms converting to MMS after 4 sms's. I made a change in feature_default.xml in /etc.
CscFeature_Message_SmsToMmsTextThreshold changed this value from 4 to 10. This did not work. i also read some where that creating a new file /system/csc/feature,xml with the same line will work. I tried that too. but failed. After a few trial and errors i realised that the character limit for one sms usually 160 chars shortened to 70 chars. So now i get only 70*4 [280] char lenth limit to type an sms. Then it auto convers to an MMS. I reverted back all the changes i made to both files but somehow this has not fixed. Any ideas?
EDIT: I figured this out. in sms settings change Input mode to GSM or auto.
Unicode = 70 char limit
GSM = 160 char limit.
use GO SMS Pro...
it has a limit of 9 sms, and private box and themes...and quick reply... and is awesome
i have the same problem as you abd i use go sms pro :good:
You can also try handcent sms... There you can change the limit also... But hey, i thought that the limit was 6? And that it was a worldwide limit? but you want to change the limit to 10 or more.... I didnt even know that this was possible...

This worked for me
In my case, this worked: day2dayexps [dot[ blogspot [dot] in/2013/07/sms-character-limit-shorter [dot]html
I had some troubleshooting option enabled in the settings in Go SMS Pro.
After unchecking that it worked.

Does anyone know what to add or remove or change in the registry to allow more than 160 characters on sending SMS ?
Thanks
this is a standard sms thing... you cant change how many characters to send in one message.. now you can type over 160 and your phone should display like 168/2 where the first number is characters and the 2nd number is how many sms' its going to send... and when it sends most newer phones will combine the 2 messages on the recieving device and it will display as 1
My O2 Xda Stealth shows as you described, however, it also gives me an error "Your Text Message cannot be sent". It works perfectly within 160 characteres (1/160) but as soon as you start with (2/320) shows the error when you hit SEND.
Any ideas ? Could you provide the Registry ?
Thanks
Maybe some restriction from your provider, I have O2 XDA Stealth too and I am sending longer messages without any problems...
Ok, thanks, let me go back an ask my Network provider to see if I have restriction.

This issue was a nightmare for me until I realized how to overcome with continuous efforts. In my case I use the arabizer and thus, I can send 160 char. in one shot (english) but when I change to arabic, the number of char. turns to 1/70 (i.e. max of 70 char. per shot).
Now, that wasn't the case always, I upgraded to one of the latest arabizer versions and surprisingly, everytime I wanted to send english sms it only allowed 70 char! I had no time to dig and find out why is this happening, though I crossed check between older cab files and new ones and found that among the difference was that the new one had two fonts files those are "tahoma" and when installed, voila the problem was solved.
The moral is it is not a standard SMS thing, it is something with localization characters. May be
This is not the case. The question if you can send full 160 characters or only 70 characters depends on the fact wheather you use ASCII or UNICODE. In case of use Arabizer or some special national characters (same for us here in CZ), you can send only 70 characters per one message, but then you can continue and you can see i.e. 75/2 and the longer message will be sent by 2 parts. But he cannot send more than one message at all...
In my case was the Network. For some reason there was a limitation on sending SMS. Network customer service did not resolve my case, I surfed in Internet and found some tricks for GSM networks.
Bottom line I just write down the following ##004#[SEND] and then I received a message from the network "Success" or something like this (don't recall). But it was enough to be able to send more than 160 characters (obviously the system splitted it in "n" numbers of SMS when you submit it)
Hope it could also work with other peoples
Hi all
I have come across the problem that I can't send SMS larger than 160 chars after I upgraded to the "official" WM6. I am using the Swedish version on a HTC TyTN. When I try and send a message that is larger than the 160 chars i get a message saying (loosely translated from Swedish) Can't send SMS. After I click ok I also get notification on the bottom left part of the sms window saying synchronization error.
Has anyone else got the same problem and if so have anyone found a solution.
/Nicklas
Just to clarify...
I take it to mean that you could sent sms that were over 160 characters before you upgraded?
Because most of the providers that I know don't allow that.
Found something on the forums about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293505
Hope it helps.
Yes I could since the SMS program automatically sends the large SMS in smaller parts.
Say I make an SMS with 203 chars then it would send it as 2 sms, one with the first 160 chars and then a second sms with 43 chars and when the SMS arrive to the recieving phone it will be put together if that phone is capable of that. Now days I think all phones can do this. Or at least should be able to do this but after the upgrade to WM6 this fails on my TyTN.
i guess the previous version of the SMS application was allowing what is called multiparts message, meaning it send as many SMS of 160 car regarding your text lengh but with no guarantee that the reviever will have them in the proper order
usually SMS is limited to 160 car
larsuck: Thanx for the link but nothing in that helped.
So if anyone else have any idea I would much appreciate it because it is a bit frustrating that it worked with wm5 and not with wm6 so far
Have you tried to take a look at DiStefano's Cab Collection? There is an Palm SMS application. You can try it with this application if it is possible on you're device. Its a small test!
Good luck
Well I found out how to fix it.
I did this:
Once upgraded settings need to be changed to ensure desired operation, on the device go to start>settings>connections(tab)>USB to PC, untick the box (Enable advanced network functionality) then exit back to the today screen.
Click to collapse
??? Why would this have an effect on SMS limitations?
I don't know exactly why but what I did was that I hard reseted the unit and after that multipart sms worked as it should. Then I connected the usb cable and ActivSync wanted to reconfigure the settings so I went through the wizard. One of the questions I get is if I want to let internet calls and mms to be sent when the unit is connected and I choose that. Then I let the unit sync with my PC.
After that I couldn't send multipart sms again until I unticked the Enable advanced network functionality box
If anyone knows why this is please enlighten me
Hi! Im having problems with sms in CM7. I cant send "only" a sms with 160 characters. When im writting a sms the counter says 10..9... when i typed 60 characters more or less... When i reach 0 it changes to 65/2. I enabled "split every 160" and the option "split counter" but... i send 2 sms with less than 160 characters...
Any solution? I dont want to use hacent sms... i want to use stock cm7 app... HELP!!!!!
Im on CM7 RC 1.5
I have SMS Split without tick (disabled) and it's fine. I can send long SMS
It didnt work... But solved.
Solved: The problem is SWYPE (last version). Maybe the devs should solve this in the future...
When i disabled swype and switched to android keyboard... All fine!
I find it rather odd that the limit on # of members of a group is 20, while the limit on # of SMS message recipients is 10 (at least on my AT&T Focus). Makes the Group Texting feature in Mango a bit less useful than it should otherwise be.
I just found a registry setting that might be of interest here - haven't had a chance to test yet. (It'll probably be Sunday before I have a good reason to send a text to > 10 of my friends).
Under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\ShortMsg\Settings : LimitRecipients = 10 is the default. I suspect that increasing this value will allow larger groups of text message recipients. Will report back once I've had a chance to test.
Huh... that's set to 100 on my HD7 (T-Mobile US). I'm guessing it's a carrier thing (yay AT&T!) Definitley try changing it and let us know the result!
Set to 64 on Stock Mango...So, no problem
But cool that you've found that!
Hmm... It does enable the phone to attempt sending the message, but it seems AT&T is blocking it on their end for >10 recipients in any case... The message fails to successfully be sent (can't send/try again link) if there are more than 10. But the phone doesn't refuse to try to send it, so apparently that is the right setting for what it's worth.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Actually now I'm not so sure ... other intermittent problems with MMS messages on AT&T today, so may just be a network fluke that it didn't go through. Will have to try again sometime.
So, this works as long as the Group Text (MMS) setting is turned off. If it's on, the phone will try to send, but AT&T bounces it (i.e. can't send, try again) if there are > 10 recipients. With that setting off, using pure SMS, no problems sending texts to a large number of recipients (have tested with 20, at least).
Thanks ! Must have tweak
On mine phone (htc trophy) is the value (100).
I am now asking it on my provider, how many I can sent ones.
But now the htc trophy can only sent 1 sms to 100 recipients?
Except the provider don't do it
Edit: if I change some register settings he don't save it
Samsung Focus
WP7 Mango
AT&T - USA
Default is 10,
Changed to 100.
Tested, works great.
idea
my omnia w/plus brand/- not registry key- CU/Software/Microsoft/ShortMsg/Settings LimitRecipients = 10... It maybe best to remove it, instead of adding value?
Ok, this is so weird. Had this problem on Android 4.0.2 and it's still here in 4.0.4.
As soon as I start typing in my language (I'm Roumanian), using any 3-rd party keyboard, I get a limited number of SMS characters.
When I type in English I find no problem. I get the 167 characters normal for a SMS message.
I attached two screenshots to show you what I'm talking about.
Does anyone have an answer? What should I do?
I cant see your attached image (the server is blocked here) but I have this same problem writing in portuguese. It is because of the encoding of the accents. As soon as you include an accent the encoding of the entire message changes and the message limit is reduced.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I even tried 3-rd party SMS apps and still I get only 70 characters out of the normal 167. Is this an issue that Google overlooked?
Edit: It seems that Apple users are experiencing the same issue.
"This is only an issue for non-English speaking countries... That's why this is not a big deal for the North-Americans that (comprehensively) sometimes simply don't understand what are we talking about...
In any mobile Phone (iPhone included), when you write a SMS using special characters like "ç","á","é","í","ó","ú","ñ","ä", etc, the SMS are limited to only 70 characters instead of 160 characters because a extended encoding is necessary! So, you pay 3x the price of an SMS if you write 160 characters (it will send 3 SMS: 70+70+20). Besides that, the risk of the SMS not being delivered is higher because it is actually sending 3 SMS at once and sometimes it gets broken in the way.
So, to solve this issue, there is a feature in any Nokia mobile phone almost for 10 YEARS (!!!) called: "SMS Extended Character Set": ON/OFF
If turned ON, it uses extended character set with 70 characters per SMS and the destination Phone gets all the special characters: "ç","á","é","í","ó","ú","ñ","ä"
If it is turned OFF: the phone allows to write special characters, with 160 characters per SMS, but automatically converts the special characters to their basic equivalents "c","a","e","i","o","u","n","a" when sending the SMS.
... It is amazing how Apple is 10 years behind other mobile manufacturers in this matter... Maybe because Nokia is originally from Finland (where they use special characters and experienced the issue) while Apple is from the USA, where they naturally (and sadly) don't recognize this as a issue.
Imagine if you send 1000 SMS in a week and you have to pay them (many people pay them)... You have to be very careful not to introduce any special character otherwise you pay 3x the money!"
