What to do... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I just realized that I most likely will NEVER get LTE where I live, I don't even have 4G. So, what is the point of waiting to buy an LTE capable phone if it's never coming to me anyway? They can still use 3G right? It's kind of frustrating knowing that I won't be getting it in my area, and if I do, it will be years from now, I think that's kind of bull****!!!

I would consider another carrier if service is that unbearable with no foreseeable 4G services ever coming to your area, assuming 3G service is horrible.

First of all, where do you live?

Lebanon, Pennsylvania; according to his location on profile. Sprint activity is really slow anywhere near him.

Verizon.

Yes Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The sprint store at my local mall has to go outside to do activations..... That's just sad! I don't want to switch though. I like the phones, and the price. Plus I'm only paying $20 a month being a 3rd line on my parents plan.

Switch carriers bro. No sense paying good money for high-end service that isn't available.
For market penetration, as previously mentioned VZW or possibly AT&T would be your best bet.

There plans, and phones suck though! I'm used to unlimited data I don't think I could handle that. Do you think if I said something to sprint there might be some small chance they do something?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app

Hmm.. I just checked some maps and it seems Lebanon doesn't have any actual Sprint towers. Your city is right next to some towers that are getting NV upgrades though but none in the actual city.
It might be a Shentel area, but I'm not certain. Shentel is a subsidiary / partner of sprint and is also doing "NV" roll-out in coordination with sprint.
Actually I do think you're in a shentel market as Lebanon is not far from Harrisburg which IS a shentel market. In that case, considering there's no Sprint towers in that entire region of Harrisburg and extending to Lebanon... you will probably get LTE and NV upgrades from Shentel.

You do have something there. Your area is part of Shentel as I've stated. Shentel is a subsidiary/partner of sprint and is also part of the network vision roll out. Your area is serviced by Alcatel-Lucent and is making steady progress in Harrisburg which also is literally next door to Lebanon, PA. You WILL get LTE 800mhz/1900mhz and likely CW 2.5ghz and NV upgraded 3g. All sprint and affiliates will be upgraded to that standard. It takes time but last check, Shentel is making good progress.
Here is more info on your area..

Short rant about network vision

So they are doing network vision updates in my area.
The area's that are done are pretty nice. No boost in signal which is fine, but the data speeds are fantastic! Unfortunately that's downtown only. The rest of the city on the other hand though had it's tower's taken offline for the upgrade and the towers serving us is now just the ones downtown. At home i went from 4ish bars to roaming missing calls, texts and such. Wouldn't care but I missed a few phone interviews today and pretty livid about that.
Hopefully I'll be reaping those benefits soon, and hopefully they are deploying lte not just upgrading the cdma.
/end rant
There are some of us who experience no signal all the time and it's not from towers being taken down to be upgraded as well so cheer up

99% sure upload is throttled to 1.5 Mbps. Being the total capacity of each tower is not being hammered for upload you usually see the 1.4* Mbps like I do. Download on the other hand is getting hammered.
Before anyone compains omg throttled. That is how it is supposed to be done, when you have a limited resource you qos throttle it.

Recently where I work, we had a meeting with Sprint network engineers and corporate Sprint sales people and I asked them when we should expect LTE to be in our area (West Texas more specifically Abilene, TX)
The engineer said that we should get LTE here in late 2013, third or fourth quarter
In translation to me, that means early to mid 2014! HAHA
I can't wait, I gave up a 4G phone to hop to the S III with LTE radio to be ready for it

I honestly think Sprint will be involved. They're building out their network but there's no way they can get a nation covered by 2013. They will likely partner with Sprint with their lte network for its coverage until they get a hold of things. Reason being, they want to compete against Verizon and At&t, and T-Mobile has the speeds they need, but not exactly the coverage. When sprint finishes their network vision, it'll be on par with Verizon in terms of speeds and coverage.

Agree with you on that one. I actually think it might be better as Sprint is upgrading every tower in their network with a few exceptions. I'm also excited Sprint just bought some people and spectrum from US Cellular in the Chicago market. In two years, Sprint will have THE best network in Chicago, and I'm happy about that.

They will probably be very tempting when it comes to their entry level pricing. Google likes to recruit a lot of customers by promotions that they lose money on, then make the money from elsewhere. (Ie: Google Play Market. If they sell only Android phones, more android apps will be bought from the market.)

The article says the Google network will be data-only, no call minutes or SMS/MMS. That stuff would be handled as VoIP, most likely through Google Voice.
So, I'm guessing it would be $20-40/month for unlimited data. Any sort of cap obviously wouldn't work for a data-only network.

Dish Network owns AWS-4 spectrum at 2000Mhz/2200Mhz spectrum. This frequency covers slightly less customers with slightly less building penetration. The best way to think of it is between Sprint's 3G and Wimax coverage.
If they decide to go with Sprint in the meantime, they'll probably be forced to have a cap on data until they get their own network on the ground. Google will definitely have a strong presence in the U.S. cellular market.

If google goes through with this I seriously doubt they'd use any CDMA carrier for any kind of backbone.
Every nexus device they've released has always been on GSM networks first and I don't even think the Nexus 4 will hit Sprint or Verizon.
Google loves the sim cards.

I've literally traveled all over America due to being in a touring metal band, and I can honestly say that 1. Sprint's service ****ing SUCKS ****. And 2. 4G LTE is extremely spotty. Luckily at home here in Baltimore I have 4G all over, but anywhere other than the east coast, you're lucky to get LTE. I had great service when I was in Denver earlier this summer, but no 4G whatsoever if I recall correctly (And I don't, because Colorado is a... "Medical" state. )

I lol'ed at the your description of how Sprint's service sucks...especially since I generally agree. But down here in Dallas, I get pretty great LTE coverage. I think because we were one of the first markets to launch LTE. In some places in town I get 30MB+ download speed so I cant complain. But in the outskirts of town and suburbs...it isnt nearly that good but I'll still usually be able to connect to LTE.

I've got to take care of a couple things this morning, but when I'm done (probably about 2 hours) I'll post a full write-up.

I flashed a stock rom to get the updated PRL. Looks good. What's different about it?
Also, I get pretty decent 4G coverage in Houston, Texas with Sprint, even out to the suburbs on the north side. It's not nearly as fast as the service I had with verizon, though, but it is at least consistent.
Once you get past the city limits on the east or south, though, both 3G and 4G get iffy.
I have awsome Sprint Airave coverage at home.
I hope someone makes a app like RoamControl that works with our Optimus G so my phone will work outside of my house.
