I think it could be to appease the mass idiots out there. "I'm not getting 4G, but at least I'm getting 3G."
I think it might be so you don't realize how often you aren't getting 3G. When I've had that mod on other phones, I was amazed how often it would just say 1X, but it did explain why everything was taking so long. It might also get you to think everyone else's 3G network sux when you are roaming. "Verizon 3G is this bad?!? I'm never leaving."
I'm using a business PRL so I have true 3g roaming on Verizon which just ticks me off more when I get faster speeds on VZ.

I've been editing the smali trying to figure out with line needs to be removed. Either I missed it completely, or for once I'm not getting less than 3g speeds in my house.
Go to the Themes and Apps section, find the morphs, and flash the silk SystemUI. It has stock theme and it's got 1x/3g indicator enabled.

If you have a custom recovery you can flash the silk ui from the morphs and mods topic by Rompnit (found in themes and apps section) , not quite stock but it does have working 1X/3G built in.
Edit: Looks like Overstew beat me to it... Darn

Yes I searched, but the xda app doesn't have a very good function.
I had ACS.ROM for awhile and I'm pretty sure that's when I had a true signal indicator as opposed to the permanent "3g"
Does anyone know where I can get JUST the flashable indicator for my stock ROM?
From what I've read, it wouldn't be as simple as flashing a theme or mod, the 1x/3g indicators are deeper in the framework.
That sucks. I haven't really read anything about what's involved. I just know I had one at some point and it was gorgeous. Hah.
You need a modified services.jar that's where its enabled. You then also, need the correct images in framework-res.apk
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Dammit, Mystery. Why couldn't you say something like "Here, flash this zip!"
I wish there was a flashable zip that would install a modded framework-res.apk.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Yeah flashable zips, I'm good at. I got mad zip flashin' skills.
You could always just flash SFR if you want the 1x indicator, I mean you do have "mad zip flashin' skills" so it would be easy.
Haha. BTDT. I flashed it like a mofo but we didn't get along too well.

How's that? We'd be happy to help get it working perfectly for you. You can drop by the IRC channel in my signature any time.
Nub question: What is 1x anyway?
1X is 2G data & voice/sms access.
1x is voice/sms access.
I have a sprint epic that is on a different service. My problem is its running 2.1. I would like to get it up to 2.2 if possible. or is it safe to one click root?
I do not wanna screw up my service.
(Not sure if i can mention the service its on because some forums don't allow it)
Roms generally don't affect service, unless you flash the wrong modem. 2 things: look at syndicate rom frozen 1.1.0 in the development section and learn how odin works then you will be a much happier epic user. Whatever you do GET OFF 2.1 !!!!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
so i can pretty much do the one click root and just dont mess with the modem by flashing anything different and it should be safe to flash those rom?
Mines on boost... you can change the modem np.. and the rom, they don't affect most service settings except mms settings. For tha I recommend apn back up and restore from the market

Even though CIQ sucks, I think it's a worthwhile trade-off. Let me use my wireless hotspot, and I'll let Sprint monitor all the porn sites I like to frequent.

Tested on Legendary 3.3!
I live in Livonia, MI (about 20 miles west of Detroit) and it seems like my data connection most of the time is 1X. I do not have exact numbers or locations, but it seems to happen whenever I need to find something using my phone. Since I do not have easy access to ODIN (Apple computers) I have not done alot of modem testing.
So my question for the members that live in SE Michigan, which modem have you found to work the best and/or is there any tweaks that I could try.
Right now I am on EL30 and run either stock CM9 or CleanGB and have tried V6 supercharger, 3g turbocharger, and Kickass kernelizer tweaks.
I live in Canton. The 3g speeds SUCK here if I even get 3G at all... Lol. My house is a deadzone too so I always need all of the possible tweaks to make my internet usable. I always use the modem for the rom release I am on. I use EL30 on cm9. I also have used it on other 2.3 roms and it works fine for me. I would take a speed test first, then test EC05. Then speed test again (speed test.net app) and see what you get a faster 3g speed on. I use 3g turbocharger with the fastest setting and the speed tweaks for wifi and 3g that I have posted in the development section.
There are barely any 3g capable towers in the area to give 3g all the time so it drops to 1x. The stock rom and some custom roms show 3g when it is really 1x. The specific rom you are on shows the correct mode.

marcusant, I am glad you replied, since this question was mainly directed to you I do use the speedtest.net app and have tested EL30 modem with the tweaks you posted, but no baseline to compare, until now. You just stated what I originally thought, 3G sucks in our area. I am going to try the EC05 modem again, but with heavy work schedule coming up, not sure when my testing will be complete.
Same I have tried every modem. El30 seems to be the best in my area also (warren).
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yup. You just gotta try them each and see which works best for you and your phone.
EL30 seems to work best for me. I drift in and out of 3g in my area so sometimes 1x is all I get. In Traverse City, MI

I use it also, but sometimes I cannot get the data to work. It also forces my mobile network to "Home only" (stock CM9) instead of "Auto: Domestic Roaming"
Is it normal for it to do that?

I know we have made big strides in finally being able to tether now on jellybean now which is awesome, thanks to TREVE. So what I wanted to know is would we finally be able to get the sprint native hotspot to work now as a hack. Would it be possible for anyone to work on this. I know questions may came up as why I would want that. My answer to do that is I believe its more stable, also it doesn't cause my phone to battery to go hot and I do not have to reboot my device when I would like to use regular wifi for things such like wifi-direct etc. After using wifi tether if I would like to connect to my home router I would have to reboot phone. Another thing is that there are apps that require that you use sprint hotspot such as KIES AIR which I use from time t time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ig=f anyone wants to know Im stock rooted LG7 odexed.

No. This does seem like the way to go, and I'm sure it will come about eventually. We went through this on the Epic4G as well, and someone did find a way to make it work, though it took a long time.

Yeah I was looking for this today when my home DSL dropped, as I had it previously on the Epic 4g and Epic Touch.
rujelus22 had a great thread that explained how he enabled the hack for the Epic touch here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760712
Also, there is a JB leak for the Epic touch which did hotspot tether by default (it didn't check for the plan) so maybe we could even just take that APK and put it on the S3...
Would any developers be able to follow what he did?

Or would the settings be slightly different since we are using lte devices

Sac's Rom with working multiview has an awesome tether app. I'm not sure it if it is a themed Treve or hacked Sprint but it works perfectly and is very clean and can be started from quick settings.

I've decompiled framework and am looking for the statements to change but no luck yet. Anyone out there willing to assist me in finding what needs to change?
Attachments:
*a logcat of the tether process starting and then being killed - look around line 79 to see the hotspot starting to get killed
*the CDMADataconnectiontracker smali files decompiled from the MA6 deodexed stock rom (thanks Freeza) (unzip and open with a text editor)
Bump, I've been looking at these files along with someone in the ET4G forum and we've been at a standstill for a while. It would be really nice to get some extra eyes on this problem. Not only would a hacked hot spot give a way to infrastructure tether, but would most likely open up native usb and bluetooth tethering (touchwiz) as well. And the edits would likely be very similar on the vzw S3. In other words kill a bunch of birds with one stone.
I know the treve hot spot works and is an awesome solution for most use cases, but there are other things we could do with a proper hacked hot spot as provided on the Epic and ET4G (prior to JB)

If you ask me. Native Hotspot can't beat Wi-Fi Tether. Access control, adhoc, infrastructure, different kinds of network... etc.
