I know we have made big strides in finally being able to tether now on jellybean now which is awesome, thanks to TREVE. So what I wanted to know is would we finally be able to get the sprint native hotspot to work now as a hack. Would it be possible for anyone to work on this. I know questions may came up as why I would want that. My answer to do that is I believe its more stable, also it doesn't cause my phone to battery to go hot and I do not have to reboot my device when I would like to use regular wifi for things such like wifi-direct etc. After using wifi tether if I would like to connect to my home router I would have to reboot phone. Another thing is that there are apps that require that you use sprint hotspot such as KIES AIR which I use from time t time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ig=f anyone wants to know Im stock rooted LG7 odexed.

No. This does seem like the way to go, and I'm sure it will come about eventually. We went through this on the Epic4G as well, and someone did find a way to make it work, though it took a long time.

Yea you might be right
Yeah I was looking for this today when my home DSL dropped, as I had it previously on the Epic 4g and Epic Touch.
rujelus22 had a great thread that explained how he enabled the hack for the Epic touch here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760712
Also, there is a JB leak for the Epic touch which did hotspot tether by default (it didn't check for the plan) so maybe we could even just take that APK and put it on the S3...
Would any developers be able to follow what he did?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760712
Or would the settings be slightly different since we are using lte devices

Sac's Rom with working multiview has an awesome tether app. I'm not sure it if it is a themed Treve or hacked Sprint but it works perfectly and is very clean and can be started from quick settings.

I've decompiled framework and am looking for the statements to change but no luck yet. Anyone out there willing to assist me in finding what needs to change?
Attachments:
*a logcat of the tether process starting and then being killed - look around line 79 to see the hotspot starting to get killed
*the CDMADataconnectiontracker smali files decompiled from the MA6 deodexed stock rom (thanks Freeza) (unzip and open with a text editor)
Bump, I've been looking at these files along with someone in the ET4G forum and we've been at a standstill for a while. It would be really nice to get some extra eyes on this problem. Not only would a hacked hot spot give a way to infrastructure tether, but would most likely open up native usb and bluetooth tethering (touchwiz) as well. And the edits would likely be very similar on the vzw S3. In other words kill a bunch of birds with one stone.
I know the treve hot spot works and is an awesome solution for most use cases, but there are other things we could do with a proper hacked hot spot as provided on the Epic and ET4G (prior to JB)

If you ask me. Native Hotspot can't beat Wi-Fi Tether. Access control, adhoc, infrastructure, different kinds of network... etc.

hey barnacles,
if you grab the 'official' rom from miui.com or even the int'l sgs2 miui port from xda, all you need to do is swap the zimage with one of the epic 4g touch's (like LoStKernel) and it will boot up and function (maybe what the OP of this thread did, didn't download to see). Data and wifi were no go. If I remember, the cameras were working though unlike what this OP says. I've been working on this here and there but I definitely dont have as much free time as I'd like as I'm getting ready to move to the other side of the earth.
I'll be more than happy to answer questions and/or help development going as soon as I can put some time aside to work on this.

I'm not a fan of the MIUI ROM(its to iPhone-ish IMHO) but I still wanted to say thank you for this post. Although I know it wasn't its purpose, it did point me to the SkyRocket's Development, and Themes & Apps Section, and man do they have some goodies over there, which I never would've found had it not been for this post, so thanks again!
so you essentially made small tweaks and got aosp based rom from sgs2 int to boot? if so, nice. I wonder if this works with CM7 as well.
Omggggg we need to get this rolling. I thought someone was already working on a port for MIUI? What is this for? Excited nonetheless lol.

If this is a bump, mod please delete it.
After trying many WiFi tether apps and different settings I found that the latest wifi tether app works for our phones running ICS builds.
You can download it from website:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta11.apk&can=2&q=
Or from mediafire:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?x32j182mc3n0g7n
After you download and install this app go to app settings-> change device profile-> and choose "Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) as your device.
Now you can start the app and connect your pc or any other device to it.
I'm posting this using tethering so it does work.
Currently I'm running Stock rooted deodexed FB21 rom by Calkulin.
As usual you can change the network name and add encryption.
Once again. If this has been addressed mod please delete this thread.
Wow, I never thought about changing the profile to a galaxy nexus lol. Brilliant! You should make a post in the general section too, seeing how that should get a lot more traffic!
May be I should ask a mod to move this thread into general section.
I don't want to creat same thread twice.
We have too many threads as is and sometime it's very hard to find info you need.
And about galaxy nexus choice.
I couldn't make it work with any other choices and then I thought since there is no ICS for our phone mabe that's the problem and did try nexus.
It worked like a charm. and it works when I'm on 4G as well.
Download speed pretty good too.
I was going to say WifiTether works on ICS on my NS4G. Nice work around!
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
I see 15 downloads on my mediafire and I guess there will be more from original website and no feedback at all.
Please let me know if this works for all ICS builds or it just worked on FB21 i'm currently on.
Wow what incredible timing. I've been trying to tether to my PS Vita all morning with no luck, but this worked! Thanks for the info!
I'm currently running DARKSTAR ROM on FB21.
Thanks so much. I need tether for work! I can finally switch to ICS!

There should be new versions of this app available on play store.
Did you try them?
If yes than I'm out of ideas.
Till now it worked with every rooted ICS OS.
It worked! It never occurred to me that it should be available on google play. t worked like a breeze, I only selected Generic ICS.
Again, thanks a lot for the tip

Hotspot hack was for deodexed roms for long time.
This was an alternative for those who wants to run odexed rom.
Now you have hack for both odexed and deodexed rom and this app
is kinda obsolete.
Think of this as a possible alternative.

except that you are mistaken. My old phone was an LG G2X and both CM7 and CM9 have WiFi Calling working on that phone's releases.
What exactly is needed to get it working? Can you just copy the APK and associated files from a stock rom and paste them into a CM9 or is there some underlying system-level programming that has to be done as well?
It is not in the cm9 d2tmo 7/27 nightly.
Cm9 least brings back the 2g/3g toggle so battery life is better than stock without wifi calling in 2g only mode.
Fyi the nightlies are stable... only issues for me are with camera

I haven't bothered to look through the sgs3 source, but on my old t-959 vibrant, wifi calling also required support compiled into the kernel (KINETEO_GAN or something like that) so it's likely that we'll need the source and means to do the same for the sgs3 before wifi calling is even a possibility on cm10.
And hey, maybe that support is already in the source, like I said, I haven't bothered to download it and check.
Cheers
Tytung has GB and ICS versions
Since Tytung has made GB and ICS versions that work on AOSP / CM9, maybe he could help us?
Here is his thread with versions of WiFi Calling that I know work on HTC HD2, but I think they work on all T-Mo GB/ICS devices.

And it will never be built into official CM source.

I just reflashed my old Desire Z with the official CM7.2 downloaded from RomManager, and it came with the TMo WiFi calling built in. I'm very interested in this. My office is a cellular black hole. I need to be able to make WiFi calls with my TMo number. I don't care about the other free WiFi calling apps. I hope CM will eventually support this, or someone comes out with a patch.
BTW, the CM team is amazing. I'm not complaining about them.

I was so excited to upgrade to JB didn't even think about this until I tried using it today. I was about to make a thread until common sense kicked in. Glad I searched before I posted or I would have been burned at the stake.
:silly:
It works on PA rom, not on leaked Touchwiz. I have nandroids of both, if need tethering, restore PA, it takes few minutes only.
CyanogenMod 10 and AOKP have it built right in. Works flawlessly.
As far as Touchwiz roms, though, nothing is working yet.
Is it a restriction in Jellybean that prevents third party wifi tether apps from working which the Android developers did, or is it just a compatibility issue which will be fixed in future updates of Jellybean or the tether app?
As mentioned in last 2 posts, it does work on some JB roms, so it's not a JB limitation.

Ya I'm sure it works on Verizon just fine. Youre in the sprint forum. Sprints hotspot is setup differently which is why verizons has a hack and sprints doesnt. I could flash a stock verizon rom to my sprint phone and tethering will work.Sprint ****d our hotspot capabilities with the update. I will say tho and it must be some random fluke that while running a leak, LIH I believe, the hotspot worked once or twice when I tried it.

I was so excited to upgrade to JB didn't even think about this until I tried using it today. I was about to make a thread until common sense kicked in. Glad I searched before I posted or I would have been burned at the stake.

Same Here, will be very glad when we get this solved.
Detailed Problem Description
I have searched and read quite a bit on this issue and do not have a clear understanding of what is actually the core issue here. Best I can tell, Sprint changed the interface/API to something with JB that prevents 3rd party tething. If that is accurate, not sure what that is specifically. If that is the case, it doesn't explain why it supposed works on some JB ROMs. Similarly, if it works in ICS and not JB, one would think that the API would not be the issue.
Several have implied that the native CM10 tether works since it is based on AOSP; however, mine will present as an AP and allow clients to connect but the data just doesn't pipe through. On that note, I have seen reports that non-TW ROMs work.
I am clearly not the expert on this matter but would find it useful is someone that does have real insight could clear the rumor air on what is and isn't really the issue.
Works!
This is an old thread, but if you're here, don't despair. Works like a charm for me (stock, rooted sprint s3) following the links in qbking77's video: Free Wifi Tether/Hotspot for the Samsung Galaxy S III on Jelly Bean
Simple question in need of a simple answer: is the reason why the app doesn't work on 4.3 because we need insecure, modded kernels with iptables, etc?
I completely rely on tethering to get online lol
thanks for the replies guys
not sure about all of that. but another member pm'd me with a mod for the 4.3 roms that allows tethering. ill post it soon, but he msy have already put it up in the rom thread.
it should help anyone on a 4.3 TW rom.

Thanks for the reply doc! He has already posted it in yours or Saranai's thread (not sure which one) but it ended up killing my 2.5gb of tethering instead of masking it as phone data. When I use TrevE 's Wifi Tether app coupled with a VPN it just shows as phone data usage and not tethering, giving me unlimited data since I'm on the $70 plan. Make sense? haha
was it sn older one? im not seeing it. itd be posted by theArtizan.

Might have been an older one. The one I used was uped by a Spanish guy I think, or he had a Spanish sounding name. Can you give me link or a way to find this post by TheArtizan? Highly appreciated
Is there a way to tether for free on 4.3 stock TW rom? Even if it's not using TrevE Wifi Tether? I really need a way to tether on my Galaxy S3 with 4.3. Since I upgraded last week I haven't managed TrevE or any other tethering app to work on my S3.

This mod DOES work and I tried it myself, however as always credit goes to the OP. Follow the instructions exactly!!! I reverted back to 4.1.2 though cause of other non-related issues
Hope this helps
Thanks!
I'm on Virgin Mobile S3 and it has no native tethering and doesn't even offer it as an add-on. I wonder if it's safe to flash?

I second that. Been using it all day.
Wouldn't risk it... make a backup though. I believe its safe for all variants of the s3 but could be wrong. You could test it haha
For those interested, working Wi-Fi tether on the Virgin Mobile Galaxy S3 build MK5 4.3. I assume this app would work for those not able to get Wireless Tether to work on 4.3
