it depends on your ROM and support of the kernel for that ROM (or vice versa ).
i am using tiamat (details in my signature). You need to try diff. kernels and see which one is best & stable for your rom. you can use "ultimate_kernel_cleaning_script_v2_by_lippol94.zip" script before flashing the kernel. you can find the download in xda forum.

Overclocking with stock ROM

I have 2 Gios, one is already running a new ROM(GioPro) and is overclocked and now I would like to just overclocked the other Gio.
The phone is already ROOT and as expected, Antutu CPU Master cant overclock the stock kernel.
My question: Can I just replace the kernel and then overclock the stock ROM or I have to install a new ROM ?
And if it is possible to just change the kernel witch one should I use ?
Thank you.
You need custom overclockable kernel for stock roms. Look over here
try phiexz's kernel. He made kernel for stock rom too. But i never tried it.

For the most custom ROMs you have to repack the kernel. However, on ViperX ROM there's no need to repack, just flash the boot.img for the kernel and install the modules in CWM.

Yuo, no need for repack. Just download the ones from the official faux thread and you're ready to go!

If there are any ramdisk tweaks you need a repack. It's usually also stated in the OP if you need repack.

You must use latest kernels
Titanium Kiss latest for sense ROMs is
boot-TK-USB-201212251804.img
Hellboy latest for AOSP-based ROMs is
boot-HELLBOY-201212251747.img

Cant flash any kernels on my hox quadcore

Currently there are no available custom kernels for the jelly bean base, because htc didnt release the kernel source code yet. All you can use will be the stock htc kernel that is also incorporated inside the rom when you extract it.

There is the custom-stock kernel made by TripNDroid from Tegra3 references and from HOX+ source.
Just reflash the rom to fix the modules and reflash the original boot.img .....

Yeah , and quit flashing ICS kernel onto JB rom , that can lead into some issues, bigger then you think.
Ok got it. Staying with viper x 3.2.2 and waiting for jb kernels to be created. When is htc giving the source to the devs?

They should release the code about 90 days after the release.....but nobody knows for sure !
