At&t or T-mobile Note 2? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have a question. Both note 2 will be pretty much same spec other than data speed lte vs hspa+, so it really comes down to service quality for me. I'm currently with AT&T and service isn't too bad but the price is ridiculously expensive compare to T-Mobile. How is T-Mobile's service compare to AT&T? I really appreciate if I could get some feedbacks from both world users.
I know this isn't a question directly toward Note 2, but since this is the device I'm interested getting and this is note 2 forum I thought I would ask here. My apologies if this is wrong place to ask this.
Thanks for your time!

it all depends on ur location really....tmobile will let u "test drive" their service for 14 days and if u don't like it, you can simply return the device...i live in a weak tmobile area but bought the tmobile one because the prices were cheaper and you can make phone calls and text through wifi....

Best advice I could give is find someone that uses tmo in your area. If they are satisfied then try out tmobile. If the coverage is poor then I would stick with AT&T.

I wish I knew someone with t-mobile, they all have at&t due to I phone fever
Anyone in Maryland care to share your experience with t-mobile service?

Thanks, I did check the coverage through T-Mobile site but I actually wanted some feedback from actual customers. All carriers will say we have good coverage and etc but in real world it could be totally different, just for that reason I was asking XDA community

You can also try it yourself for not too much $$$.
Get your phone sim unlocked, cellunlocker.net or whatever, probably $8 - $25.
Get a t-mobile sim and start a prepay account on the "Pay By The Day" plan, Unlimited Talk, Text & Web, $3.
This will only be interesting if your area has already gotten the tmo 1900 hspa+ rollout.

That's what I did.
Device works on at&t but no LTE

Doesn't seem like 1900 is refarmed around my way, only getting EDGE speed is truly painful. When I'm in city, it works great though, getting speed almost as fast as at&t's lte. I'm guessing if I switch to tmobile device I won't be running into edge speed issue? Maybe I will give that a go.

What kind of speed (downloand and upload) are you getting on the AT&T network using the TMO note 2?
Thanks

Yes, it can. Buy it outright and you can unlock it for free right away. But you will only get GPRS, if I am right.

I have an unlocked T889 running 4G (HSPA+) on AT&T. So long as you have a data plan it'll work. LTE radio is software locked for now, but really HSPA+ is fast enough for most uses and probably doesn't drain the battery as fast.

I feel your pain. Sometimes reading thru all these threads, we have people who profess to claim certain things, and it goes against the grain of what is actually truth.
Especially with something like this phone where there is so much interest - I'm still trying to find the right information so that I can decide between purchasing the T-mobile or AT&T versions of the phone.

I have the TMobile SGH-T889...paid $25 to that cellunlocker cite, used their code with my AT&T HTC One X SIM in the Note II. It registered on AT&T, so I ran some speedtests with the Ookla app. I got test speeds in the 3-4Mb/s range, which in my area is as good as AT&T's HSPA+ network gets. The same SIM pulls the same speeds on my AT&T One X.
Conclusion, it works on AT&T 3G/fake-4G network no problems.
That said, the exact same phone, in the exact same location, with its TMobile SIM in it, gets 10-12Mb/s on the speedtest app. Not sure why I'd want to run the AT&T sim in this phone with that kind of speed difference.

tmobile 5G?

I've been seeing news rumors saying Tmobile maybe the first to run 5G...what do you guys think? I haven't seen any LTE yet even...this maybe just BS. On the other hand, Tmo just worked on LTE...so maybe it still easy for them to reprogram to 5G...? Anyone got the inside scoop?
http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/t-mobile-first-5g-lte-advanced/
I wouldn't say this is BS, but calling LTE-A 5G is BS. Really I think T-mobile wants to have the fastest 4G network and they may call it "5G" if they got 300mbs+ out of it, but I really think they should start rolling out 4G LTE across there 2G foot print.
They're all marketing terms, and their meanings change. Most of the current "4G" infrastructure is more like 3.5G since it falls so far short of the original design specifications.
LTE-Advanced is probably going to be billed as 5G, but it's more like what 4G was originally supposed to mean. Cheap and greedy telcos sold us short and marketed the intermediate steps as the final product.
2G, 3G, 4G used to purely mean something, but now the "label" has shifted to more around the raw speed regardless of the infrastructure. A great example is TM with their HSPA+ calling it 4G, which (like one mentioned) is more like 3.5G.
However, TM's HSPA+ (3.5ish G) in some areas can whoop on other carriers LTE. Look at my sig; great example.
Although TM was last in the race for the LTE infrastructure, TM has the most expandable infrastructure over all the other carriers. Very smart move. Why? Because if the other carriers wanted to expand they would have to put in place a completely new infrastructure for their next generation network, whereas TM can just expand on their current (New LTE) infrastructure. Now the tides have shifted.
So 5G for TM? When the time comes, yes TM would be the first to have it since they have the ability to build on their current platform without the hassle of putting in a new one.

Verizon Fios is not available in my area. Uverse also not available unless I pay 100+ option. Only option I have is Uverse DSL...which is crappy and about 80% reliability. Cable is pricey and fail miserably on jitter test. My new friend is $10 (unlimited talk from Tmobile to replace my home phone. Tmobile $20 unlimited data to replace my home DSL. I hope Google Fiber becomes available in OC area soon someday.

I think it's a lot more time and money that's needed to run new cable/fiber to each and every home than replacing a cell tower or two every block..

Yeah really, I still facepalm at Cincinnati Bell putting up advertizements on the billboards about FiOptics when some of those places don't even get it! OTOH I'm surprised cell companies don't offer unlimited (fast) internet on their internet sticks.. if that happened I'd dump my ADSL and go with a stick.
However, I still find it amusing that cell companies still push tiered data plans (thankfully Tmo no longer does this...)

I'm glad they do. People are going to be using cell phones to provide themselves with home internet. The isps need to get with the program here. T-Mobile actually has a "grace period" of tethering for this sole reason. Fibre and xFinity are prolly the only ones faster than some cell companies. It's pitiful.

T-Mobile finally getting the G Pro?

I was in their store a few min ago to close my line since my unlocked G Pro could only get edge wit T-Mob. The rep informed me that the G Pro is coming to T-Mobile in the next 2 months!
I had to clarify with him, if he meant the G2. And he verified that BOTH phones are coming soon, and read over the announcement and no actual release date has been given yet.
If this is true I'm gonna jump on this so fast!!

I actually work for T. And Not in store. You should not believe the store reps. They normally don't know anything, all they know is getting the commission from your pocket & and make a mess in your acc so you call customer care and yell to a rep that has nothing to do.
They don't read the internal info.
Now getting on the subject. No gpro for tmobile. The LG G2, Motorola X, next iphones & note 3. Those are confirm phones from T internally.
Sent from my LG-E980 using xda app-developers app
I opened a new line with T-Mobile and used it the past two weeks. I was able to unlock my G Pro with the T-Mobile SIM. I immediately searched and located T-Mobile APN settings to take advantage of their LTE service. The only time I had LTE available to me was towards LA, an hour south from where I live. Yet as soon as I popped in the T-Mobile SIM into my old T-Mobile HTC phone, I got more than Edge signal at my house.
So please, can someone explain to me why, at my house, I could only get T-Mobile Edge signal on my AT&T unlocked OG Pro, but using that same SIM I got better signal on my T-Mobile unlocked HTC?
After contacting T-Mobile myself, I was informed that the towers in my area haven't been "modernized" to allow unlocked devices on their LTE network. Currently, only their T-Mobile designated devices could access LTE here.
I must not be understanding something here. I'm sure I still have that conversation on my phone somewhere...

T-mobile has their hspa+ and lte on the aws band, but your home area is only covered with hspa+. The G Pro does not support hspa+ on the aws band so at home you only get edge. The G Pro does support lte on the aws band so you will get fast speeds as long as you are in an lte area. The HTC phone only supports hspa+ but you have more hspa+ towers in your area than lte towers. Chances are you can take the HTC phone anywhere and get fast speeds.

Waaaooo that rep get that answer from his a#$%. Tmobile has been working in what they call re farming. Its basictly that they move all the clients on 2g phones to 3g. So that tmobile could refarm that spectrum for lte..this was done in preparation for apple iphone on april 12 that the iphone arrive to tmobile. That actually cause that several other devices like android that use to work on edge now are able to get 4g or 3g or lte where available and stop the interoperability of none tmobile devices. All that thanks to crappy iphone. In resume either you are in a area that has not yet been re farm or it is and simply your lg does not have the correct apn. It is not the sim as lg g pro use the new sim type that enable lte.
Theres a treath somewhere here that using sqlite editor your able to enable the network mode on the lg. Wich will allow you to change bands. Maybe that will work.

Well theres a catch in a phone able to work on a particular carrier. In the case of the lg pro. If the phone is the one from at&t you should not have any problem. As long as your area has been re farm. But i can't say the same lets say on a lte phone coming from china or other country as they might run lte on a different frequency.
At least is what i have seen while working with clients that bought chinesse copy cats.
I took this call of a lady that bough a chinesse copy of a gs4 and she call to complaint that work on edge. When i ask what type of phone she got, she told me well its a gs4. I was like what the #$% you just told me is a copy cat so no lady you don't have a gs4. Anywyas theres was no way to make it work on nothing.more than edge.
So in way you are righ but the other person is righ to in a way.

That's the rumor.
And the next rumor: TMob - Sprint merger, leaving 3 equal-ish sized carriers to compete, instead of 2 biggies, and 2 small fries.

Well no longer a rumor only drawback is 2G speeds Still better then $15/mb roaming data rates.
20 cents a min for international calls is pretty good though.

A T-Mobile executive was quoted as saying a merger with Sprint was the "logical ultimate combination" two weeks ago. Wouldn't be so bad to add Sprint's coverage (realestate) to Tmob's, as long as CDMA is killed off with fire ASAP.

I also wouldn't mind the extended coverage but I am afraid of Sprint's ethics and HORRIBLE customer service somehow leaking into T-Mobile's customer service. The only benefit I see is like you said the extra coverage but I am more afraid of Sprint's "bads" to creep in. And yes definitely no CDMA that would be horrible.
A T-Mobile Sprint merger would be good if CDMA, was killed off, T-Mobile had operational control, they sell the 2500mhz spectrum use the additional 1900 mhz for HSPA and use Sprints 800 mhz for LTE as well as the current 1700 mhz

You forgot one thing... Keep Sprint's unlimited data for life, cause unlimited 4G is nice. I said pretty much this same thing in some other thread. I had sprint previously, their coverage sucked, but I am happy with t mobile right now. If they do so happen to merge, I want my company discount back. With sprint, it was 23% discount. T is 15%.

That is true I was talking from a network point of view, but I completely agree about the keeping unlimited data for life they also should put John Legere as C.E.O he's been doing great things. I was also a Sprint customer but I switched to T-Mobile for speed and I haven't looked back.

Same here. But I know exactly what you mean. If sprint and t mobile merged, they would have the ability to expand further than at&t and Verizon.
It actually makes a lot of sense. They just have to nit pick the good things from each carrier.
1. 4G from t mobile.
2. New and old spectrums from Sprint.
3. Unlimited high speed data from Sprint, without a price hike.
4. GSM from t-mobile.
5. The phone policies from t mobile.
6. John Legere.
With that all being said, maybe t mobile should buy sprint instead. Looks like they have more going for them.
I also wonder what the new logo would look like. SprinT-mobile maybe?
Edit: and the t-mobile girl. If they really feel like getting rid of her, they can send her my way.

That would be great if that would happen except T-Mobile's parent company Deuche Telekom unfortunately wants out of the US market and will try to sell ASAP.

Well, that was the case, but maybe with the new announcement of free data in 100 countries, they may just change their minds. Here is hoping they either just stay the way they are, or make the smart move.

I've done data roaming in a few different cities in mexico and although the speeds do get throttled I was able to do anything I needed to do within email and social media. I got a text from T-Mobile with the option to use 4g at an additional cost per day but didn't see the need. Throttled speeds should be around 128kbps

Hmmm I don't see the problem with it. You will have to get the phone unlocked for when you input the sim card then flash the corrective kernals. At least that's what I know when using phones meant for one company to another. Not that I did it or anything.

If both companies offer LTE, and n9005 is LTE(Which I found here http://www.sammobile.com/2013/09/01/galaxy-note-iii-lte-model-sm-n9005-passes-gcf-certification/, shouldn't it be compatible?
The hspa will be compatible but LTE bands between USA and the rest world differ.

OHHHH Okay. HSPA is okay kind of. I used it a while back. Hey OP, is HSPA available in your area from Metro, because I know they started offering it. If so, there you go.
Thanks for all you guys I just bought a new note 3 from t mobile store and it's working very good on MetroPcs without rooting it. LTE also working in Saginaw very fast ( 25mb -38mb).
Congratulations. If you get around to flashing roms I highly recommend flashing an int'l rom on it.

Tmo owns Metro now so don't see why it won't work. If anything just have to wait until they get done adjusting power outage the metro towers are backing on

Can you just buy a Tmobile Note 3 without having contract from the Tmobile store?
Of course. You need service or need to be under somebody's name with service to get monthly installments though.

I called a store, they said you need to have some sort of prepay fee...or some kinda of agreement. YOu can't just buying without signing up for service or is this just with certain stores?
So is it confirmed that the T-Mobile U.S. Galaxy Note 3 is working on MetroPCS U.S with 4G? I'm trying to be sure before buying. Thanks in advance.
hello i just recently bought a note 3 to use on metro everything works but my data is very slow. my ping is below 40ms but my dl and ul is always around 8 - 14 kb. i live in arlington tx so i know i can get good speed but im not seeing it. i tried the tmobile apn as well as metro but both give the same results. is there a setting that i miss or is it something else. thanks
