[Q] Please break it down (Root and Roms) - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Ive been keeping up with the ThinkTank 2.20 thread since page 20... we finally have root.. Awesome! Thanks to djrbliss!
My Background: Every device Ive ever owned Ive flashed with custom firmware, Ive had the iPhone since iPhone1. A few weeks ago I decided I was tired being a part of the system and i threw it on the ground. I bought the HTC One X solely because I eventually want to build my own ROM for security and functionality reasons. Now that we're unlocked, i need to know where to start. With so many posts of different ROMs and Tutorials... none of them seem to relate to each other so its hard for me to learn the basics. So here I am.
My Device: HTC One X 2.20 ATT
Current Status: Tampered, Unlocked with Evita PVT SHIP S-ON RL
Rom I want to use - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946784
Question
The ROM itself is only 6mb... that cant be the full size of the ROM to be flashed can it? what am I missing? am i supposed to copy other required files from the ROM.zip to the phone by USB transfer in normal boot or what? Ive put the boot.img in the same "android" folder along with the fastboot and adb files, Ive followed the tutorials, I've tried the one click GUI program somewhere on here... its still not working.
Request:
Can someone explain to me the basics of rooting, recovery image, installing superuser, and installing ROMs and how the whole process works? I might be able to figure out how do these "basic tasks" myself if I understood. I'm just so confused with such an information overload that its hard to find out whats necessary and whats preference.
Most importantly - Ive completely wiped my phone in the process of trying this (i was aware it was going to happen so its cool) but I still have original ROM with ATT bloatware. It just doesn't make sense to me...
Thank you

you might get better help if you post this in the one x forum not the s3 forum

[Q] Flashing HTC Bee (CDMA Wildfire) SPL

I've been trying to flash the CDMA Wildfire's SPL (from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11712773&postcount=1) onto my Alltel Wildfire. Since there's no custom recovery (yet), I traced the steps from here and modified my misc and cache partitions manually on my PC, then flashed them with flash_image. Unfortunately, it's not working.
I thought I might be doing something wrong, so I pulled out my old CDMA Hero and tried the exact same thing, but it worked on the Hero. What am I doing wrong? Is it because the rom is designed for Verizon, or did HTC just remove that update functionality? Any suggestions, hints, etc. are greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I just looked back at the post, and the rom isn't "designed" for Verizon, xHausx just said "Verizon's version of the Wildfire", referring to CDMA as opposed to GSM. My bad.
Wow. Nothing? I'm just looking for suggestions or opinions. I'm willing to try anything
Depending on how much spare time I get today, I might try reversing the stock recovery to see if there's anything in there related to flashing the bootloader. I'll post back if I find anything.
im going to try getting s off on this wildfire bee cdma. i will let you no what i find.

Awesome! Just thought I'd share some of my failed attempts to speed things up:
I replaced the public key with the test key in the stock recovery's /res/keys file, then tried a write_firmware_image. Didn't work.
I replaced the kernel in the boot.img with the bootloader, and set the load address to 0 ("jumpspl style"). Didn't do anything noticable (stayed on Alltel logo).
Another thing I noticed is my Bee's model number is PD0610000, and the one in the rom above is PD0611000. I don't know if there's anything significant in that, but between that and the massive difference in hboot versions, I'm afraid to try and flash that rom. Luckily, I found the alltel one here: h**p://u.115.com/file/t5f03f513d (can't link, even though I did before. hmm...). Someone would need to make some S-OFF patches, though, since it's a SHIP SPL.
I also thought about a unrEVOked forever style "radio hack" (for lack of a better term), but I'm not sure how to proceed down that road.
Good luck to ya

i have two of these bee's i have one rooted but no recovery. so i was looking to see if i can get s off. but i should be able to spend mo time on them now.
bump for this thread. Is there any S-off available now for HTC Bee? I need it so bad. Thanks
Sorry for the near-necropost
Okay guys. It's not my main phone, so it's not a priority. But this is the only phone I have that I haven't been able to customize.
I'm very familiar with dirty root methods, I have a rooted/S-OFF'd Tb that I did by hand. If anyone knows/has the files I need to get a dirty S-off, I'd be more than happy to try and do this, and I'll post my results (best scenario, a guide) afterward.
Anyone? Please?
All the best,

Do you still want to work on this phone? I have the Alltel and C Spire RUU but don't where to start.
Hi HalosGhost,
I really don't know which files you need, but I'm willing to send you whatever you told me to send you (from the phone), I'm able to have root access, and also I have a "backup" (since this "bee" doesn't have a way to backup the actual ROM) that I found in a chinese site: RUU_Bee_Alltel_WWE_1.07.671.2_Radio_1.00.00.1001_NV_Alltel_2_60_NoCNV_release_152081_signed.exe[/URL] (referenced by Isaac356, I tested and I did a successful re-flash to my cell) and I know it has the damn'd lock AKA nand lock, so I was unable (and as far as I understand, no1 has) to flash it because this one is preventing us from doing it.
If anybody has another tip I missed please say it now.
So, what you need, buddy?
NOTE: Grrr! I need it to take out the link: so I post it here: http: // u.115.com/file/t5f03f513d
PS, I missed to mention that I tried the GoldenCard creation but all I tried did NOT work
any news about this? I tried using HTCDEV to gain S-off but still no luck. It Just updated my hboot.

Can anyone help me put original ROM back on my DHD

Hi, and thanks in advance for anyone who can help.
I have a desire hd phone, witch I love anyways I had it rooted a few months ago by a local phone shop, but I didn’t really see the benefit from it, in fact it caused problems so I performed a full factory reset within a few days, and thought that was the end of it.
Anyways my phone received the option to update to the 2.3 gingerbread on Monday, it downloads fine, and then when the install starts it freezes at about 20% of the way thorough.
I have contacted HTC several times about it, they say the phone will not update if it’s been rooted and I have to send it back to them to have it re-flashed, one person said it would cost £30, another said £200 so I would rather not send it to them. the last guy I spoke to was very helpful, he said it was possible for me to reflash the phone to its original ''shipped'' state, and if I joined a help forum I could possibly get some help, but he was unable to advise me on this., so here I am!!!
I received the phone new in January and it has had no updates until the one on Moday, and it was rooted using visionary a few months ago, I have performed several factory restores since then.
Current software is:
android version 2.2
baseband version 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_m
build number 1.37.771.3 CL290190
software number 1.37.771.3
im in the uk, and on the 3 network
Many thanks,
Jamie

Hey dude, this link should help. I'm currently downloading it so that I can help you further when you get it also.
I would think twice about reverting everything back to stock though. You are now in the right place, the shop you went to, to get your phone rooted was the wrong place! We are a friendly bunch for the most part so do some reading in the desire HD general section and you'll find some nice ROMs that are close to stock firmware but perform better. If they're not for you then feel free to flash the official ROM from your provider that I have linked to above.
Oh yeah, Welcome to XDA!
Thanks for that, How do i go about installing it, and will it completely revert the phone back to its original state so i can use the ota update and get the 2.3 gingerbread?
And thanks again for your help
Damnit, what I've linked to is actually someones backup of a stock 3 ROM so it won't be quite back to factory fresh. Let me do some digging, I'll be back.
EDIT: What exactly did the shop do, other than use visionary? You could try AMT tools from here and query the device info, that should at least let us know what they have and haven't done to the phone. I suspect that they have set a super CID hence why the update won't go through. Try AMT and report back.
Thankyou very much your help is appreciated.
Should i try the link you posted earlier??
Just use AMT tools that I linked to above in one of my edits and check the CID, If it is just the CID that has been altered, then you can use this tool to reflash a 3UK CID which is H3G__001
when i use AMT it says AMT is designed for use with Desire HD and Dsire z / G2 ONLY But i have a desire HD ????
Strange, is there an option to click OK or ignore?
EDIT: Weird, I just booted into windows and I get the same thing with AMT tools. Now I'm really confused. Try using the other tool that I linked to and see what that displays.
EDIT 2: Just had a thought. Pull your battery then put it back in. Hold 'down' on the volume rocker then press the power button. Your phone should start in the bootloader and we should be able to get some more info. Once you've done this, list everything that it says in the bootloader screen.
Sorry, my brain is a bit slow today for some reason.
Ok ill do that now, i have also just rooted my phone again using visionary (i followed the link in your earlier message. so its rooted again now. cant believe i paid £20-00 to have that done, it took me less than 5 minutes to do it

OK, so it would seem as though all they did was root it and leave most things intact, I think they must have changed your CID though probably using the jkoljo's radio S-OFF tool.
Run that tool and try to change your CID to whatever it was that I said before H3G__001 I think it was, or you could equally use that tool to get radio s-off super-CID and sim-unlock, then install ROM manager from the market, flash Clockwork Mod Recovery and then flash a custom ROM after making a backup of course.
The world is your lobster at this point and flashing new ROMs can be fun. I might have to re-flash my current ROM myself as I think I've screwed something up with it from messing around too much earlier today
i dont understand the open "Desire HD easy radio tool.exe'' where is that??
Please remember i am a complete noob when it comes to this, lol
i had to download the visionary app using my phone as my laptop kept saying it had a virus.
i have downloaded the premium rom manager app, can you recomend and good roms, or where i can get a list of them? also could you explain in noob terms how to change my phone so i can get the 2.3 update? the cid bit!!!

I'm gonna point you to this thread as it has everything you could possibly want or need to know in it. There is a link there to a thread all about how to flash a ROM, what tools you need on your PC etc..
With regards to how to get 2.3 onto your phone pretty much every ROM you'll find in the DEV section is based on 2.3. That thread I've linked also has links to pretty much every ROM currently available for the DHD and everything is explained far better than I would be able to explain things.
The tool to get Super-CID, which really only helps when it comes to flashing Radio's (which is something I would avoid until you've found your feet a little, however it's worth doing now, as it is simple and relatively worry free) is at the bottom of this post.
Happy reading and just remember that as long as you read all the instructions for something before starting it and you feel comfortable with what the instructions are explaining, then you will succeed with your end goal.

I have downloaded this, but i have no idea how to use it! i extracted the files to my desktop, it has a few different applications in there, one says start here but when i open it a command prompt comes up on my pc screen, i dont know where to go from there

You should extract them into one folder, then from there you should be able to double click the only thing that looks like a program icon. If nothing is happening it would suggest that you need to update your .NET framework. Do that by running windows update or going here.
Honestly....... the best thing to do would be to go here and read the basic setup bit so that your PC is ready for everything, and then read the rest of that little guide and it should hold your hand through the whole process.
im going to attempt a custom rom form the link you gave me (everything desire hd) do you have any recomendations??
Cyanogenmod is interesting as it more like stock Android, MIUI is similar to iOS and then you have the sense ROMs with tweaks and whatnot. Have a look at the options available in the screenshots and see what you like the look of, it's a very subjective thing as some like one thing and others like something else.
the link you gave me for the rado code was missing the important bit!
i managed to find it somewhere else

do you have to go through the root procedure every time you use the radio tool, or will it work every time after the phone is rooted. the reason i ask is that i just tried to do it and it said ''operation failed, probably connection'' ill try it again now

It usually fails the first time, I don't know why. After a reboot it worked for me, keep your phone screen on though as the package will request superuser permission.
That link is definitely not missing anything as I've downloaded and run it from that link several times, but maybe your download got corrupted.
Glad all seems well now anyway.

[Q] bricked my phone...

PHONE INFO-
Virgin Mobile
primo c S-ON
HBOOT- 1.57.0000
Radio- 1.00.00.0928
Clockwork Recovery
I successfully managed to root my phone using the all in one tool thing, which I'm sure you have seen somewhere before. before researching any further, i decided to install the Paranoid (I think it was called) Rom, to get Jellybean. I found a tutorial, and it seemed simple enough. I went ahead with the step listed, and got to a part where it said to do a factory reset. I came across a problem there, because every time i tried to do it, a message said something along the lines of "unable to mount to /sd-ext". I was left with a nonfuctioning device, and googled a fix. I found stuff about RUU's, but i couldn't find one that worked for me because of my radio version. On other threads, people said that they successfully flashed a different radio, but they were probably on GSM phones. I attempted to do the same with a 1.00.00.0512_2 radio, but i got a signature error. I did more research, and learned that I can't do it because CDMA's are S-on. from what i've read, there isn't a way to make the Primoc version S-Off, so im pretty much stuck. I'm just wondering if there is any way that i have not found yet to save my phone, or if im screwed until they make a RUU for my phone, or a way to S-off the phone, to flash the different radio. Perhaps the answer is really simple and i've missed this whole time. I know that other people have asked this, but i really need to know
That blows man, at this moment there is no way of getting the S-off on the one v, people are still trying to find a way to get the s-off. Since you have the latest radio and boot version is technically impossible to go back to stock using the RUU. many people have had this problem, there isn't really a way of fixing it. You can try flashing codefirex rom or rythmicrom
, which work with the new radio.

Rooting HTC Sensation XE - Almost there, just need a tiny bit more help!

Hi, I tried posting this in the ' Upgrading, Modifying Sticky Roll-Up Thread **Check this thread BEFORE posting** ' thread yesterday before posting here, but it would appear it's not being answered anymore...
Anyway, I've just spent the last few days attempting to root my phone - most of it has been dead-ends, but I've made an amount of progress that actually surprises me! But I've come to this forum in an attempt to jump (hopefully) my last hurdle.
My phone is a HTC Sensation XE (Beats Audio), Android version 4.0.3, HBoot version 1.27.0000.
I bought it a little over a year ago from AmazonUK, with the SIM already unlocked. But other than that, I believe it was completely stock.
Now, over the past few days my primary goal was to root my phone, so far I've managed to unlock the bootloader with HTCDev, S-Off using the wire trick and (I think) perform a successful flash recovery with the clockwork recovery .img file - not sure if the recovery did work or not though, because it didn't actually install anything on boot-up... which I think it was meant to, wasn't it? I need some enlightening on this please
Anyway, these processes I've done have come from all different sources on the web, purely because nowhere has a solid system that completely works for me! either something is the wrong version, or its out of date, or it doesn't work with my phone for some obscure reason. However, I've made it this far and am now stuck with getting my phone finally rooted! I'm not sure if it's to do with a failed recovery or something, but could someone point me in the right direction or at least some sort of direction so I can say if I've already tried it or if it actually works, please!
Thank you!!

Cyanogen Mod Verizon HTC M7

So after absolutely no help from Cyanogen mod and their forum I thought I'd come here.
I have an HTC One M7 from Verizon with 4.4.2 and I'm just getting really "bored" of the Sense 5 feel. I used to like it at first with my DNA, and thought I'd like the M7 more, but I don't...it's just "dull" and I feel like it's meant for the average user.
Enough about that, here's what I'm trying to do..I want to put a new "skin" on my phone, but have never rooted or done anything like this to a phone before. After doing some research into the M7 for Verizon, it seems that Verizon puts a lot of blocks on their phones to prevent this.
Does anyone have a detailed guide on how to do this safely? Like I said, I'm new to this, and need a thorough explanation since a lot of the terminology I don't understand 100%.
I've been looped around at Cyanogen mod about S-Off and Bootloader, been told different things about what each one does and people just made it very confusing.
Root can be found in the original development section. The thread is called weaksauce. Root is essentially a binary file that allows you access to the "root" files of your phone and its system.
S-off is a boot loader or hboot (similar to the bios on a pc) that has its security unlocked...allowing you to truly customize your phone. In order to s-off after gaining root. See the link in the weaksauce thread for fire water.
Once done you will flash a new recovery (controls the makings of your system). Then you will finally flash a new Rom CM11 if that's what you want.
I suggest doing a bit of reading in this forum before proceeding. Good luck.
