[Q] disable OTA-Updates? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello,
following situation: I have 4.1.1 installed on my Nexus and also CWM running on it. As you may know an update won't work with CWM. At the moment I'm too busy to update to 4.1.2 but my phone keeps annoyingly telling me that there is an update available...
ROM: stock rooted
How do I disable this?
thanks a lot!

That's not totally correct. OTA updates will work fine with CWM, just not automatically. When you get the notification you can just reboot into CWM and flash the update zip (it's in /cache).
I realize you were asking about not getting nagged until you have a chance to update, but I thought I'd mention this anyway in case it helps when you do have time to update.

So that works?! I'll give it a try! Thanks for this information!
Edit: Unfortunately it's not working :/ I copied the zip into a folder of my SD card and tried to apply the zip with CWM... not working.

On a related topic, I'm a cheapskate and would like to get OTA updates via wifi instead of using my data plan.
Can I stop the OTA downloading until I accept it?

Unfortunately just saying "it's not working" doesn't really give me much to go on, so I can't really offer any advice other than to make sure you have signature verification turned off in CWM. It definitely works because I've done it lots of times myself. If you can provide any details on what's actually happening I can try to help further.
Also, make sure you use some method to keep root... either something like OTA RootKeeper, or just flash SuperSU (or whatever your favourite superuser is) after the update.

[Q] System Update unroot?

Hi im running this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
and i have recieved a notification for new software update (the one with better russian keyboard) and i tried downloading but it didnt work. Is it possible to do this (im rooted with unrevoked)? Also would i lose my root? i dont care if i do, im more interested in getting the new update and unrooting, thanks
yes you would lose root.
you are aware that if you install it you may never be able to root your phone again? well at least until one of the devs here finds a way.
i'm sure that update will get rooted and added to the ROMs soon if they haven't been already.
but other than that if you don't care then you should be find installing it.
i tried updating using system update, but it wouldnt work, my clockwork mod said the update failed
how can i update to this safely?
i know theres a way, do u know it?

You shouldn't try to install OTA updates to rooted phones. It usually won't work.
If you want the new version you can either install an RUU with the official version and then root, or you can install a newer rooted stock ROM through recovery.
yaaaaa bout that im on a mac, tehehe, and i dont mind losing my root
^havent heard of an ruu working on mac
The easiest thing for you to do is install a new custom ROM that is based on the new version (mine and a couple of others).

hence the third line of my post.
what if i just wanted the update and i didnt want my root tho?
Reboot into recovery, apply zip from sd card, toggle signature verification so its off, the update zip is downloaded to your sd cards download folder. Apply it. Then use unrevoked to root your phone again.

do i have to download the system update first, and then it will become update.zip, or is already do, can u walk me step by step through?
update: i tried what u said elmalote and it didnt work, what do i do now????
The ROM you are on has been updated with the latest OTA now so I'm not sure why you want to go another way than just flashing that ?

Is it a fully safe way to try install OTA update over the rooted ROM? I have branded ROM rooted using unrEVOked and I would like to try to install OTA update this way.
it didnt work for me, but if u try please tell me, it shouldnt screw up your phone.
does any one know how to install ota on a rooted phone

I'm not so sure about that. I've looked into OTA update downloaded into sd-card and it contains:
- system updates (new files, patches and so on)
- recovery img
- hboot update
- radio image
So let's assume that I toogle verification process (turn it off). OTA update will install over rooted ROM. After this, I have new recovery (because OTA update contains it).
I can see possibility of bricking my phone, when following situation appears:
- OS doesn't start-up (fell into boot-loop, whatever)
- recovery is back to stock, so no possibility to restore from nandroid backups
What do you think about that? Can someone confirm this is safe/dangerous?
Barthand, relax, i tried this, and i just rebooted my phone and it was fine. if you don't want to do it, then don't, but don't fret. it didn't work for me but it didn't screw up my phone either, now back to the main problem does anyone else have any solutions to install ota on a rooted phone.

[Q] OTA update failing on WFS rooted,S-off

Hello all,
I am a happy WFS user, with S-off, CWM, rooted, link2sd with ext3 partition.
I installed stock rom europe 2.13.401.3 recently and now I receive the message that a new update is available for the phone. I downloaded with Wi-fi bu when it tried to install it I have a screen with a white triangle with a yellow exclamation mark inside. Removing the battery and restarting everything is fine.
Do you know why it is not working? What is the update about? can I get it somewhere else?
I checked in the stock ROM list and the last version is still 2.13.401.3.
Thank you for your help.
Personally, I wouldn't suggest you to do the OTA since you have an S-OFF. You could brick your phone.
Why not try any of these fast and beautiful custom ROM's?
Don't update! You can't root it.
Well you can install superuser but no root apps get granted permision.
Trust me.

but the update comes with hboot 1.09.0099, an unlockable hboot. so it shouldn't be that problematic.
thank you for your help guys. I won't take the risk, I've disabled the updates . I didn't know it was dangerous, I thought I was safe with stock ROM.
I found the .zip file downloaded for the update and apparently it is the 2.14 firmware.

nope, the update is standard. please upload the zip file (from sd card, I assume). thank you.
The reason you did not get the update to work is that it requires the stock recovery to flash it. That big exclamation mark is the phone saying that the stock radio is not there and it doesn't know what to do. If you flash the update like you would a rom I would imagine you would be fine but best check the files inside First. Worst case scenario your rom stops working, and at minimum you'll lose root.

New official update from AT&T!

I've been a long time lurker, first time post.
I have been running the official AT&T ICS release I927UCLH2, and was notified of an update for my phone from Device Management. I am now updated to I927UCLJ3 baseband. To my surprise, my keyboard backlight is now working. So far, everything looks good. There is no sign of this update on the Samsung ICS page. Maybe AT&T is just going to push it out and forgo Kies altogether? Who knows?

Seconded here. Do we have to remove CWMR in order to update from the new OTA update?
I just got a software push from AT&T for my Captivate Glide. After the restart, the keyboard lights now work! About phone says: Android v. 4.0.4. Baseband v. I927ULCLJ3. Build number IMM76D. I'll see if other things have been fixed like, ringtones that stop working and clock being x time slow. Both of which required a system restart

I reloaded the stock recovery from my LH2 install and tried the OTA update. It downloads the update but fails to install with an "Update Failed" after the reboot.
I never rooted my phone only installed CWM for the Keyboard fix and to backup with CWM. Wish I had never installed CWM now.
Just got off the phone with AT&T myself, the rep said it should be available on Kies, they want me to try the new firmware before they'll continue warranty procedure on my wife's glide.
Edit: Well it's not, but it should be soon I guess.
Second Edit: On phone with samsung, they say the update is still "on hold" on his system. At&t told me to call them if I needed help with the firmware update.
Thanks for the info. Kies kept crashing on me so could not try it and OTA says I need to way 24hrs to try again.
Will try Kies on a second computer.
Is there any way to reset the 24hour AT&T update time without erasing the data partition?

I might have to try something similar since Kies nows says that "You device does not support upgrading via Kies". Since I did not root my phone it must either not be happy with the flashes I have done to recovery even though I have flashed back to stock recovery or the Keyboard fix I did.
This blows.
does anyone know if i flash with a stock AT&T from sam firmware on a Rogers i927(r) will I be able to update to the new AT&T version on Kies ?

Success!!
Here are my steps:
1. Restore a backup I made with CWMR before when I first installed it before making any mods.
2. Reinstall stock Recovery before doing anything else.
3. Get OTA update even though less than 24 hours since I restored a previous point in time.
Doing the stock ROM was my second choice but since I had a backup at least most of my apps and settings were recovered.
Good luck!
2.3.6 phone says no OTA update. I'll try Kies later.

How do I root this ?? I have CWM installed on it but am not sure where to get a CWM zip to install SU...
I found an odin flashable I927UCLH2.md5 and used it, and when into settings, about phone, software update, and it gave me an update and I'm downloading it right now.
The phone is now at I927UCLJ3. So AT&T can OTA push it instead of trying to force the phone to work with kies

[Q] Please help me get a usable phone again

I decided to try cyanogenmod on my SGH-I747 but have had so many issues I would be happy at this point if I could just get a working phone again.
I started with a 4.3 OTA-updated phone. I rooted the phone, then tried to install the latest 10.2 ROM. I also tried 10.1. I used CWM: I would have preferred the latest version but the best I could find that was not an .img file (I used Odin) was in the 5.x range. In both cases I hit what I believe is a bootloader error ("assert failed: ... Status 7"). At this point the phone is wiped with no recourse. I attempted to install the stock boot image for the I747, but after doing so the phone will no longer boot.
EDIT: I am able to get to downloading mode. I am afraid to use it to install stock firmware b/c of a post I found here claiming that downgrading from 4.3 OTA (e.g., to 4.1) will brick the phone.

i actually had the same problem earlier today. what i did was use odin to install clockworkmod recovery. after it reboots, hold VOLUME UP and HOME at the same time. if you have a micro sd handy, download any of the two updates here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498233 place them on you sd card and in recovery format cache and factory reset/data. then highlight "install zip from sd card" or something that sounds relevant. select the zip you placed on your sd card earlier and there.

That appears to be the standard tutorial for rooting/flashing. I did it anyway, even though didn't the file you had me install before already root the phone? In any event, I ran CF-root and then I attempted to install CM 10.2 and it failed: "failed to verify whole-file signature." I believe that was the first error I hit in the beginning of this exercise. Additionally, now I get an error on the welcome screen that says "Unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped."

Thanks for the suggestion. I went back to the no-KNOX file you pointed out earlier. I assume that is the same type of file as the CF-Root so I assume I don't need to install CF-root anymore after installing the no-KNOX file. So now I follow the tutorial from your second response minus the root step. I no longer get the SuperSU error. However, I still can't load a ROM. I get the same "assert failed... getprop("ro.bootloader... Status 7" that I mentioned in my first post. When I googled this in the first round, I saw several posts saying it means I had a bad bootloader. That is when I tried to flash the stock bootloader, which nearly hardbricked the phone. Do the two files you initially posted include a bootloader file?

No idea. I went ahead and tried to install the I747UCDLK3_aio.tar.md5, which I hoped was a 4.3 bootloader (don't know how you are supposed to tell). The error I got was this was another failure--this time saying the package was for d2att and this is a d2spr. My phone is definitely not a sprint phone. Some posts say I have to update the build.prop file, but I don't know how I can do that before a ROM is even installed.

reuploaded it with new link, does it work now?
I'm also waiting for a flashable zip because I can't get adb working and ota fails every damn time.

you can't just flash an update.zip through stock recovery?
Appears to be working! I've got someone who is going to try to get me everything I need to build a rom from the AT&T release, so if all goes well I should have it up this afternoon! :fingers-crossed:
Success!
used the odin flashable 4.3 file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722660 , went back to stock 4.3 and then used the OTA provided by the OP to get to 4.4.2
edit: please wait for the devs to work their magic to get fully working and easily flashable roms

I believe that wipes all your data so I wanted to avoid that, and it might not work according to some peoples experience,

Awesome, will this be an odin flashable tar that will keep your data? I have been struggling for the past few hours trying to update without losing all my data. I flashed this rom [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498233] that is stock and includes knox but Adb doesn't work for me and the at&t software update says its up to date, which its not, so I think the rom might have a problem, and I'm trying to figure out how to reinstall twrp so I can restore my backup but knox is blocking me. Hopefully I can just odin your rom and towelroot and be done with it.

could you make an update.zip for users with stock recovery as well?

OTA shouldn't wipe any of your data. The way it works is it patches the existing files on your device with any changes to bring it up to date. Shouldn't touch any user data at all.

It'll be recovery flashable. Im not sure yet if Ill be trying to create an Odin flashable one. Will need to have someone pull the system.img slightly differently if I do. (Would need to Odin flash 4.3, flash TWRP, boot straight to recovery and flash the OTA, then while still in recovery dump the partition.) Even then, no guarantee it would work quite right. These things can be a little finicky.
How is Knox blocking TWRP though? You should be able to flash that via Odin. Since you updated using the OTA though, every time you reboot, it will rewrite the stock recovery. So when you flash TWRP via Odin, uncheck the Auto Reboot box, then after the flash is successful, pull the battery. Then put it back in and boot straight to recovery and flash your rom.

I will try. No guarantees though. Its been a long time since I've messed with OTA's, so I'm not completely sure I will remember exactly what to do with it. I should be able to do it though. Just not making promises!

Not sure whether you can use Mobile Odin Pro to do that. Extracting the file from the OTA.zip and renaming it from 2400258.cfg to 2400258.zip makes it recognized in MOP, and the options are there to avoid the wipe, but I know earlier OTAs like that did wipe.
Note - I have only gone so far as loading it into MOP; waiting to see if someone more foolhardy than me is willing to actually do it.

Tempted to try it (flash through stock recovery) but not my phone lol
Unless MO is written to specifically handle it, it will probably fail. (Im not sure if it is or isn't)
Sorry if I was misinformed about it wiping data. On TMobile neither OTA's or flashing in Odin ever wipes data. Afaik, Odin will only wipe data if there is a data.img included in the .tar file. Our OTA's have never touched anything but dalvik on the data partition either from what I remember.

Let me be more precise; the technique I was talking about is found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767827 and applies the OTA in a way that wipes. Not sure whether MO would do the same or not; I haven't played with it since the upgrade to 4.3 last year and my memory is hazy.
Just tried and ADB sideload of this file to my S3. After renaming the .cfg file to .zip.
I get an "assert failed" on "getprop("ro.product.device") == "d2att""
Any suggestions? I'm wondering if the phone is reporting something other than d2att?
So no one tested this via stock recovery? Need to know if the update can be done through stock recovery.

Just tried this method.
I got the assert failure again, and it happily wiped my internal SD but didn't install the OTA.
Good thing I'm not using this device for anything critical, I'd be rather pissed off.
