[Q] Which KT7474 kernel are you using with CM10? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Just like the title suggests, which KT747 kernal is compatible with CM10? Every time I flash the kernel my phone wont boot and I have to restore from a backup. I am currently on CM10-10/22 build 10827 and the KT747 kernel I am trying is the AOSP-JB-ATT-10-22-2012. I do have a ATT Galaxy S3 so I would assume that this should work?
Thanks for everyone's time!
Zehel

There is a version for pre 10-14 CM10 and one for after.

After you flash your ROM be sure to fully boot your device into android then go back into recovery again and then flash kt747 , then wipe cache+dalvik +fix permission . Reboot

Ah! Fix permissions could be a huge part of the problem. Let me try that and see if that fixes my problem. Also, maybe I am blind but I can't seem to find the one for CM. Is there a separate thread for the CM Kernel or is it in the thread by Ktoonsez?
Thanks again,
ZS

Hey man, do you mind sharing what you did to make the kernel work?
I have almost the same issue as you did before, and tried everything I know (including reflectingod's method), still doesn't work at all.

Well, to be more specific, KT747 kernel doesn't work at all on my GS3. I am using ATT variant i747, with task's AOKP ROM. I followed the full wipe -> ROM -> gapp -> kernel steps strictly, and was sure using the post-1014-JB kernel to pair with 1022 AOKP release, But still, my phone is suffering random hot reboot, black screen, system process are terminated randomly, and any opened apps will be closed within mins. Yes, I have cache/dalvik wiped after flashing the kernel, and permissions are fixed. I also tried to flash ROM first, then log on to system, then flash kernel, makes no difference. I really don't have a clue why KT747 kernel doesn't work on my phone, any suggestion is welcome.

I would suggest you to do a complete clean installation:
1. Wipe data
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe dalvik
4. Format /system
5. Format / data
6. Format / cache
7. Reboot recovery
8. Wipe data
9. Wipe Cache
10. Wipe dalvik
11. Mount /System
12. Install Rom
13. Install Gapp
14. Fix permission
15. Reboot & Setup your phone
16. Install Kernel
17. Wipe Cache
18. Wipe dalvik
19. Fix permission
It should be fine then.

Rom is supposed to be flashed first. If you don't it overwrites the kernel with the one pre-loaded on with the Rom.Otherwise follow everyone else's instructions >Cache/Dalvik/FixPerms after flash. Go into settings and see that the kernel is there. Good luck

[Q] My Gnex won't get past 4.0.2 Canada

Hi I've tried to change my Build. I'm currently using Android Revolution HD. I've got the kernel the program came with - android-build. I have tried changing it over to a whole of builds. AOKP, Gummy
It never successfully launches any of them.
Every time I wipe data, cache and I wipe Dalvik too.
I don't know what to do...
Is there any one who is on Rogers that can do this?
Thanks guys

Don't really make sense??? Try to also format system in recovery ( it won't touch ur personal stuff ) then do all the other wipes then try flash another Rom if that don't work I.got nothing, if u can't figure out there's always fastboot stock Google .img
Can you provide a step-by-step instruction on how you tried to update your Galaxy Nexus ? I'm not on Rogers (I'm on TELUS), but still, maybe we can help you and see if you are following the right path !
You're not doing something right if you can't get another ROM installed.
Do this.
Make sure ROM and Gapps package for that ROM is on your SD card
Reboot into recovery
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Go to Advanced, Wipe dalvik
Go to Mounts and Storage, format system, and cache
INSTALL ROM based on 4.03
Install Gapps
Reboot and Enjoy

Flashing a ROM (JellyTime)

I got a simple question about flashing a rom, at this point its JellyTime.
I'm not really familiar with the order that you need to flash and if you need to flash the kernel separately?
My order is now:
- clean/wipe
- Flash ROM
- Flash gapps
- fastboot flash boot.img (is this step required, or does this already happen when flashing the ROM?)
Then the follow-up question is, does it affect the ROM when you boot the first time with an older kernel?

You can flash the kernel basically anytime. I usually dirty flash kernels with no problem.
Also, no need to fastboot the boot.img. The rest of your order looks fine.
My order :
- format all partitions (except sdcard)
- wipe cache/dalvik
- Flash ROM
- Flash gapps
- fixing permissions
- Reboot
But i think your steps should be fine as well.

How do you fix permissions ?
When I flashed gapps I saw that in the end its fixing permissions. Do I need to something manually ?

You can fix permissions using recoveries like 4ext and stuff...remember to wipe cache and davlik if you are flashing just kernel.
Like he said use recovery 4ext there's an option at "tools".

Wiping cache+dalvik cache is redundant after formatting all partitions. A lot of people have this habit and recommend it, but its unnecessary. Dalvik-cache is located in the data partition. It's nothing special, its a folder there like any other, and contains classes.dex files for all apps on the device. When you format all partitions, data is formatted, so the dalvik-cache is wiped along with it. And the cache partition is formatted anyway. So wiping cache+dalvik again after formatting all partitions is of no use and unnecessary.

You don't need to wipe cache and dalvik after flashing a kernel. I used to do it too, but many times the devs themselves have said it isn't required. Lord Clockan said many times that wiping cache+dalvik is unnecessary after flashing a new kernel. When you think about it, it makes sense. Dalvik cache just contains classes.dex files for all the apps on the device and nothing else. When the dalvik-cache is rebuilt after a wipe, it pulls the classes.dex from each apk and puts it in the dalvik-cache folder (please correct me if I'm wrong). This isn't in any way related to the kernel and what it does. Regardless of the kernel flashed, the dalvik cache will remain the same. So it shouldn't make sense to wipe it for every kernel flash.

Hello, I did all of the steps in this order and ROM is booting OK. But after that I have random freezes while doing different tasks (taking picture, going to settings, after unlock). Do you have any suggestions what can I do/change to fix this. This is happening on all Jelly Time releases - i tried R3, R4, R5.1 and also AOKP V6. When I flash IcoColdSandwich everything is running without problem.
I will appreciate your help. Thank you!
My order :
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- Flash ROM
- Flash gapps
- fixing permissions

Thanks, that makes it clear.
So its possible that you flash the kernel when you are flashing the ROM!

[HELP] My GS3 hates customs kernels

Hi everybody, apologize if this kind of question has been discussed before. I have did my homework and research in the dedicated kernel threads and the Q&A section, however, seems I am the only one that can't get custom kernels work on my phone, at all!
OK, here is my story. My S3 (ATT variant, i747) runs perfectly with AOKP (10/16 release) and CM10 (10/18 nightly), on default kernels come with them of course. However, after flashing the KT747 Ktoonsez's kernel, my phone goes crazy. It is suffering from random hot reboot, system freezing, core processes are killed randomly, black screen, no apps can be launched, and etc. Basically, my phone stops working. I have also tried the lean kernel (which has been proved working just fine in i747), which can't even get booted into OS. I am pretty sure I was following the suggested steps when flashing the ROM and kernel. Here are my steps:
1. Boot into recovery (I have tried CWM and TWRP, no differnce)
2. Make nandroid bakcup.
3. Full wipe: Format data -> wipe system -> wipe cache -> wipe dalvik cache.
4. Flash ROM -> flash gapp -> flash Kernel -> wipe cache -> wipe dalvik -> fix permission (I have tired wipe cache/dalvik before flashing kernel, no difference)
5. Reboot.
I clearly aware there was a big chance after 10/14 CM10 build about kernel, and I am pretty sure I am using the correct KT747-AOSP-JB-1016 release with my AOKP 10/16 build, but still, won't work at all.
Please let me know if I didn't anything wrong when flashing the kernel or ROM. Any suggestion is welcome. Thanks in advance.
Kevin
You may want to try not flashing the ROM and kernel together, meaning flash the ROM and gapps following all recommended instructions then reboot. After fully loading into android, boot back into recovery flash kernel, wipe cache/dalvik, fix permissions and reboot again. See if that helps. May also want to allow a couple reboots before you give up on the kernel, sometimes it takes a few for the kernel to 'settle.'

Thanks man, will try your method and report back.
once you flashed your ROM(aokp) you need to reboot and let the phone fully boot into android... after that reboot to recovery and try flashing your Gapp + kernel
don't forget all the wiping and fixing permission for each steps
edit: wow this tab was open for a long time i guess. there was no other answer when i wrote this browsing through my opened tabs.

Kevin my phone is exactly having the same problem did you come to a resolution
Especially on aosp roms it might help to flash the rom, let it boot once, then boot into recovery and flash kernel, wipe cache & dalvik, and fix permissions.
Also i've heard that some people will have alot of reboots before the kernel starts running smooth and stable. Or you could just have a bad phone that doesn't like to be tweaked. If i were you i'd take advantage of that warranty and try to get a replacement.
sorry for being a newbie....but what do you mean by fix permissions? =/

[Q] Softbrick Remics 1.8

Hi there
I have wiped data, cache, dalvik cache and fix permissions, flashed Remics 1.8 and Gapps 20120429 and i'm stuck at Remics boot animation.
I am trying for the second time, this time I wiped data, cache before flashing gaps too but it's booting for 15 minutes now and still waiting.
The ROM was released today so I have no feedback. Anyone tried it already?

To make sure you have the full file try checking the size, download the file, check size, if same click cancel and if not same delete the incomplete version(sometimes it's just a network problem, happened to me before)
After checking you have full sizes, follow these steps:
(1) copying the files to you phone.
1- use CWM, connect usb to computer.
2- go to mounts and storage.
3- connect usb storage.
4- copy files to the phone's internal memory.
(2) flash the rom.
1- go to mounts and storage(again)
2-format /system /data /cache
3- go back and wipe data(just to make sure) then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
4- go back and flash rom and Gapps.
5- again go to advanced and but now fix permissions.
6-reboot and enjoy!
Press The Thanks Button If I Helped.
Thanks

I've been flashing for years now.. I gotta say those are some overly cautious steps..
If its an aosp based ROM... Even from 4.1 to 4.2, just wipe the cache and dalvik cache and the system partitions in recovery. That will ensure you won't force close. Wiping all of your data isn't needed. Just make sure to run a fix permissions after your flash and you'll be golden.
