How well will my phone hold up against standard drops - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I paid like $500 full price for the phone since I don't have a contract, I'm sorta super paranoid now especially after seeing all the drop test showing how fragile this device is.
http://www.amazon.com/Incipio-SA-30...4608&sr=8-3&keywords=galaxy+s3+incipio+faxion is my case and, I didn't want a slim TPU case since they don't really offer that much good drop protection & I didn't want an otterbox because they are too big http://www.amazon.com/ArmorSuit-Mil...55&sr=1-1&keywords=galaxy+s3+screen+protector is the screen protector I have otw.
How well do you think this combo will go against regular accidentally drops here and there since stuff happens, obviously not crazy insane drops.

yea but there have been so many done & the end result was that the S3 shattered

protection
I would get a ballistic maxxx for for max protection. Check out this drop test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07nwZapGL6E . It's a little bulky but will surely protect your s3.

I think you'll be fine. Two days after I got mine I was about to post an embarrassing photo and my friend grabbed it and ran full speed into a wall and it flew from his hand, hit a wall then tile, only result was a little chip in the plastic. I've dropped it naked a couple other times with nothing to report...

I'd vote in favour of a better lip but tbh, I'm not sure I wanna know how these things will take a drop.
I usually have a Seidio Surface case and holster for when I go out. Not as much protection as the active or an Otterbox but fairly compact, if having a case on is ever going to. Survived one drop at an odd angle near my dogs water bowl and landed on the edge of the case...much to my relief.

I have dropped my phone several times on my kitchen tiles from about a height a stove. Although there was no damage, I still ended up buying Ballistic 3G case jus to be on the safe side. From what I've heard, the corner edges are the weakest parts of this phone because of the glass curvature, I might be wrong on that.

I think you have a decent case on the phone that should withstand most drops just fine. I read that most damage from drops are due to the extremely fragile edges where the body and screen meet. That was a major factor when i chose this case. It is similar to yours; silicon cover and polycarbonate shell, but as you can see, it has slightly more protection around the edges.

so should I get a new case or just stick with this case?

Let me just say I've dropped mine several times and it's fine. Drop tests are kind of dumb unless a device is incredibly fragile. A lot of it depends on the surface you drop it on, and the angle it hits the ground at, you could shatter either the iPhone 5 or the GS3 by dropping it from pocket height on concrete if it hits the ground wrong.

That's a matter of preference. How comfortable are you with your current case? I'm guessing you have some doubts considering this thread.
And, since you're asking, personally, I would go with a different case. I also bought the phone off contract so I definitely understand the need to protect it as much as possible.

I feel like the back and side have good protection but I don't think the front lip is not high enough but it wouldn't really matter if it falls on a flat surface since it would hit the front ridges first right? I placed like a pen like across the phone n it touches the side ridges n not the phones glass, so there is a tiny gap

Better safe than sorry when it comes to a $500 phone. Do you at least have insurance just in case?

No not really i don't drop it often but accidents do happen. My s2 died on a drop after a year of ownership, that phone never had a scratch on it n I only had a soft gel tpu case on it but last week when I dropped it from my table it went in a rebooting loop that I couldn't fix even when I tried to restore, flash back to stock rom etc so I conclude that drop on my s2 screwed up some internal hardware so that's why I got a medium end case for this s3 instead of the tpu slim case but eyyy idk lol

It really depends on your life style and where you work. I have a Otterbox defender, Oem Flip case, Oem leather pouch and I tpu case, my Otterbox is what I used the most, mail for my job (construction) the others I use when I plan not doing any big activities (sports), so it's really hard to say if you need another case or not, it just depends how confortable you feel,

[Q]Bezel scratches easily?

Have a friend who told me how easy his bezel would damage from normal use. I didn't notice this until the other day when I noticed my bezel has lots of small scratches just from normal use (sitting in pocket, playing porn and such).
Anybody else noticed the bezel getting scratched/showing wear really fast?
Was gonna post this in the issues thread but wanted more confirmation before it was in there.

Yeah but its not really a big deal any phones on the side usually scratch easily you wouldn't see it on a all black phone. My previous phone mytouch 4g has bezel scratches all over it but not enough but you can't see unless you closely.

Eh it's a simple fix. If I find that I'm getting random small scratches on the bezel then I'll just wipe it with some suuuper fine sand paper to give it more of the brushed aluminum look and it will be brand new all over again.

lol thats exactly what i was thinking. mine is flawless after a week and put in my pockets and stuff
Yeah, I've got to say that I am pretty surprised at how easily the bezel scratches. The phone fell out of my coat pocket as I was hanging it on the back of a wood chair. As it was falling it barely grazed the wood leg on the chair before hitting the carpet. I picked it up and looked and sure enough, there is a scuff on the bezel that refuses to rub off.
Luckily my case should be here in a day or two to cover it. But it does have me thinking, I don't think it's the actual metal that is showing the scratch. I think the bezel has some clear coating on it that is showing marks very easily. I bet there is a way to wipe the coating off or at least buff out any marks with some sort of solution and a microfiber towel.

Just to confirm its plastic. I take these apart for a living... IV had just about every Galaxy phone apart too.... the ones that look and feel like metal have a "metal like" coating (that scratches super easy) but from underneath once its removed you can see its plastic.... as a matter of fact, Sammy doesn't use hardly anything BUT plastic in there devices... the vibrant, GS4G, i9100, AT&T and T-Mobile versions... all plastic. They have a frame in the middle that's made out of that material they use in laptops... maybe coated aluminum? Its tan or silver in the phones but very strong and very light, and if you snap it in half, it almost looks like cast iron... anyway, bezels are plastic, just coated to look and feel metal like.

Aluminium case for Galaxy SII..

Searching for a good case for the Tmobile Galaxy SII...came across this in ebay..is this any good?linky
Note: Im' no way connected to this seller, just that havent seen many hard cases and from the pictures these seem to be nice
i doubt it, i have a feeling this case only wraps around the sides of the phone, and not not the corners or front bezel of the phone.
i had something like this for my iphone and it only collected dust in the back and made more scratches on the back of the phone
if you drop it, your phone is gonna get F'd, which beats the point of a case.
yeah it looks nice, but i highly doubt the phone will land directly on it's back, on the case
if you want a good case, just get any TPU case, they're cheap and they dont scratch your phone

Silver one with video review here.
OP, i was browsing on ebay and looking at that exact same one yesterday and i gotta say, although it looks nice and i was 2 heartbeats away from clicking buy, it isn't protecting much; other than the already safe rubberized battery cover.
I would love one that is the bumper wrap around found for the international SGS2.

Most cases are aesthetic anyway unless you drop your phone on a flat surface they are pretty much useless. Phone case looks great though.
Getting a metal case like this may impact your GPS and cell reception.
Sent from my Hercules using XDA App
I've had one of these on my old vibrant. They're basically a clear hard plastic on the sides and is snapped on like the incipio feather cases. There is a slight indent in the back which is used for the aluminum "sticker" once the the aluminum is applied u won't see the indent and sits flush. The aluminum is a concentric pattern and pretty ugly in person. But that's my opinion.

I have to disagree with this. Most cases are meant to protect against daily activities. IE: Keys in pocket while walking, non caring when you put your phone down etc etc. Minor drops most cases will help against small dents and scratches as well. If a person is really worried about their phone dropping onto a hard service or really damaging it, then there are cases out there to help protect against such events. If things were aesthetic than people would just leave their phone on without a case.

thinnest case

i am looking for the thinnest case for my 4g touch. all i really want is a case that gives me a little more grip so the thinner the better. i have a tpu flexible case
(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005MGUTW6/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details) and it just isn't thin enough for me.
Have you tried the sprint one? I know its a little expensive but it has a weave design that adds allot of grip and its pretty thin. Also as a bonus it has a kickstand
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I have this one and have had it for quite q while now. it is thin but it has scratched the tar out of my phone on the side...if you use this, just do your best not to take it off on on too much.
Try the case-mate barely there
http://www.case-mate.com/Samsung-Ga...axy-S-II-Epic-Touch-4G-Barely-There-Cases.asp
or the incipio feather.
http://www.myincipio.com/Samsung-Ga...-Touch-feather-Ultralight-Hard-Shell-Case.asp
I have the case mate and like it better than the incipio. Case mate covers the corners of the bezel where the incipio does not.
After using my protective case & holding it in my hand for awhile & noticing how its actually held. I've garnered the assumption that all that's really needed is a outside protective ring, if minimalism is what you're after.
The only thing I could find was one for the iPhone. Something like this would be good for the E4GT if you ask me:

I have one of these "hybrid" cases and use it everyday because of the hard back (to protect that thin battery cover). Don't think cutting the back out would work simply because the structure of the case is built around the rigid back, but I suppose one could try it (they are inexpensive). The bumper is also pretty thick so it adds to the quite a bit to the girth.
FYI Have the "barely there" for going out, but don't feel it protects enough for everyday use.

I have this case. I hate thick cases and cases in general. In fact, I've been caseless for months with only one small little scuff mark on the bottom left. However, I decided to put the case back on but with two small modifications. I hate how the case runs a thin piece of plastic over the top of the volume and power buttons. I cut them off and it's MUCH BETTER. Now I can confidently recommend this case.
Edit--------------------
I do have one issue with the case and that is with its design. The kickstand is on the wrong side. When you use it, the power button is on the top and the volume keys are on the bottom. It should be the opposite. I usually want to adjust the volume if I'm using it watching something, I rarely want to use the power button. Small, but annoying flaw in my opinion.
-------------------------
(and yes, taken with my Epic Touch 4G!)
This is the case I bought. I used the bulky rubber cases with the protective glass covers for a long time, but with SII, I decided to go slimmer. I don't have anything on the glass and this case fits the phone perfectly, actually giving it a better feel and weight. It has a sleek look that most cases don't with a brushed aluminum finish on the back. It really looks like it's part of the phone. I can't recommend it enough. The only drawback is that it is minimalist and probably doesn't have as much shock protection as the thicker rubber/plastic cases. That being said. I think that I dropped my previous phone once over it's two year life, so I didn't sweat shock protection much. If you drop your phone alot, this might not be the case for you. Just thought I'd share. I found a link for this case for around $20 when I bought it. The link below is $25. I'm sure you can score a crappier case for $1, but I think the $20 bucks for this thing was worth it. High quality and it looks really nice.
www(dot)accessorygeeks(dot)com/case-mate-barely-there-samsung-epic-4g-touch-hard-case-368189-alum-gry.html
*edit: Sorry for the link. I don't have 8 posts yet in order to post a link, though I've been reading this forum for 2 years now. Oh well. The link is just the first result I got from Google, so hey!
I have the Sprint kickstand case as well but only paid 19.99 for it through Sprint when I ordered my phone.
It's thin, doesn't grip onto material (pocket in pants or purses) but does feel secure when holding it and the kickstand is handy (one of the things I loved about the Epic 4G phone).
I've put it on and removed it from my phone numerous times (I recently bought the desk dock from Sprint) and it's left no scuffs anywhere on my phone.
This will make a thin case for you. You better be good at masking off areas you don't want it on (screen, buttons, ports, camera lens and flash area and rear speaker). Take the battery cover off and mask the area underneath, that way you don't seal the door to the phone. Yeah this is sarcasm but it "could" conceivably be done and be the thinnest case.
I actually thought about doing this but I don't think my skills are up to the task. It can be peeled off if you don't like it.

totally agree. annoying as hell. but i think i figured it out. and maybe you dont do this. but watch ALMOST EVERYONE with their phone. when they turn it sideways, thats how they turn it. so when the case manufacturer made it, thats how they turned it. so, is it the manufacturers flaw? or samsungs?
I recently bought the sprint case on eBay Ford 12.99 awesome deal! And I love the case! No problems at all. Plus I'm a sucker for carbon fiber

Stay away from the Sprint case, it has poor build quality and will scratch your phone after a while. If you want a thin case, get one of the TPU ones.
Transmission sent from a Galaxy S II with XDA Premium
It may not be the thinness but in my opinion its one of the best. I have the Platinum (aka Seidio) case from Best Buy. It's the 2 piece slide in case with holster. It works great.

Big ass cases....why

Do some of you like carrying bricks in your pocket. Incipio feather case or no case anything else is a sin. Worse case you drop your and a little mark in the corner. I drop my phone all the time I mean almost daily and nothing. I also have a screen protector.
I like the design of this phone not love its basic. I love the galaxy nexus. If I had to use this phone with some of thick cases I wouldn't. Too bad the s3 is so ugly if they just kept this same design with just a slimmer bezel it would be a dream.
Anyway people don't be afraid to drop your phone this phone can handle alot. And worse case you can get sprint to give you another if you want to sell it.

Dropped my epic 4g once and it was destroyed. Rather deal with minimal added thickness than paying a premium for an awesome phone. Keep dropping it and let us know how that works out....I hope the best of course, no need to spend more $ than needed.
I threw my otterbox protected phone the other day to show someone how effective it was and the case didn't even have a mark, let alone the phone.

Are you saying if your next phone was 2.5 MM thicker and 4 MM wider you would absolutely HATE it? Because well thats how much space my case adds. If someone wants to throw a massive case on their phone why would you complain? I don't work or use my phone in an environment that an otterbox is terribly necessary but people do. Basic protection is pretty slim and a few drops, bounces and months later my phone is pristine.
If you don't want any bulk at all and minimal protection try skinomi techskins. I just ordered one and see how that turns out

I'll take my Commuter Otterbox over a paper thin case any day of the week. I work in industrial manufacturing, I need protection.
I was going to make a few smart ass remarks but everyone is entitled to their own opinion and style.
You drop your phone almost every day? I would utilize the lanyard hole and wrap the thing around my wrist. I've had my phone since late december and haven't dropped it once.

Not trying to be an ass, but this may be the worst advice I've ever read. Why would anyone not want to protect a $500 investment? Sure, you've dropped your phone everyday with no bad omens, but I've dropped my phone twice and both times the battery and battery door exploded off of the phone and it received some scuffing. Luckily that is all that's happened, but you could crack your screen or cause other damage to your phone. And sprint will give you another? Sure, as long as you're willing to hand over some cash. Idc what phone you have or how durable it is, sacrificing some bulk to protect something this expensive is well worth it in my opinion.

Right lol I mean all I have to do is show you pictures from day 3 of having mine. Photoshop a little dust on the edge of the screen protector. The rubber case has Galaxy SII rubbed into the inside of it from the phone being pressed into it.
This is not an iPhone what are you guys doing dropping your phone from 30 feet up or moving cars. And I don't drop my phone every day but enough to know the phone is solid.
I just don't get how you turn a super slim phone into a 4 pound brick. Don't worry about me the most my phone can fall is from about 5 feet to the ground. I even drop it to show friends.
Remember means to let go I'm not throwing it at the ground like some of would think

Big & Tall Cases
Ok, so I always sport a screen protector because that is just common sense, even if we have gorilla glass because 'sand' is present everywhere and ultimately sand can and will scratch even gorilla glass. I used a case for years with my slider smart phones until I got the Touch Pro 2. I ordered one for this phone but I just got an extended battery and back that I like. So there are no cases for me now, which makes me wonder why this is so? Why don't those selling the batteries and backs, also make pregnant cases? :-/ Although I think I like it better with the fatter battery and the new cover has a kickstand, which I am excited about because I have been paying Sprint $10 a month for one even though this phjone doesn't have one. I don't really worry because I carry TEP and which is why I pay for TEP. I used to live in fear of breaking or losing the device and TEP gives me the peace of mind. I have dropped my device about 30 times in the time I have had it (day it came out) and my unit has some dings its stood up to everything I have thrown at it.
The device is pretty big already so I stayed away from the Fort Knox like case.
Ive had mine since release safe and sound in TPU case with no drops , dings or dents.
When not in use during work day etc I pocket carry keeping display scratch free.
I've had my phone since release day and it could still pass as a brand new unit. I use a screen protector and minimal hard shell case with a kickstand, it adds very little bulk while still protecting my phone. The Otterbox series (even the thinnest) just seem very thick to me, however, if I'm engaging in any activity that puts me outside a lot on pavement or on hard packed earth (like hiking) I would use a thicker more padded case to keep my phone safe just not as an every day case.
This thread is going nowhere....
Cheap light and sexy on the phone. I got mine matted, but they all are good. http://www.amazon.com/Cimo-Gloss-Sa...=A2X1DSC0SAJ94E&ie=UTF8&qid=1336871759&sr=1-6

Great device - but far too easy to scratch

I have had the device for about three weeks. I love it. It's by far the best most comprehensive device I have ever owned... Except that it's 'faux' metal frame is far too easy to scratch. i amn already on my second device. The first one I had I returned to att because the "metal' got so scratched... in a spigen capsule case!
So I searched for a case that wouldn't mark the metal and bought the Samsung S view case, which is a really nice case. Low and behold, even though I have been incredibly careful, the metal is scratched again.
Is it just me?

Faux metal? You realize that is aluminum which with daily use of the phone is going to scratch regardless of what you do. You are just going to have to get over it .
Yeah I can only speak out of my personal preference but I expect my device to get scratched. The only portion I'll get upset over will be the camera lens and the screen itself. With "normal use" of tossing it in and out of your pockets and on to whatever surface you make rest it in will cause some sort or scratches unless everything you wear is very soft material.
I have a pelican voyager case that I use when I'm doing something where I feel it may need more protection. Again this is only my view though.
I've heard via these forums of people complaining about many cases scratching the metal around the sides though so I'm sure if you find a nice case that doesn't a lot of people on here would love the info.

I really don't know what you guys are talking about. I have had the device for over a month without a case or screen shield. I don't have any scratches anywhere.
I've had mine since launch day with a soft case (one of those clear plastic ones that bend very easily) and the metal frame is full of scratches too!
So seeing how other people mention that they have no scratches at all, is it possible that some of us got "defective" phones? Is it possible that the aluminum of certain batches was of lower quality?
I thought this was "normal", I assumed that it happened to everyone, but now seeing that it's not I might consider getting a replacement. The reason I use cases, a part from protecting it if it falls, is to prevent scraches, since I plan on selling the phone at some point. So having all these scratches of course lowers its value.

This is interesting. In talking specifically about the shiny metal band getting scratched and you have no scratches at all? Even under a light?

No scratches and I've had mine for over a month. I've found that most hard plastic cases do this to phones if you're taking them on and off a lot which is why I prefer a pouch style case or just a cloth case like for sunglasses. I really like the snugg wallet style cases, although there is not one for the note 4 yet, but there are ones like it. I also hate using a hard case because they are so bulky, I bought a thin phone for a reason! Also I try to treat my phone like a really expensive computer, which is what it is after all.
I've been using this case since I got the phone and well there's pretty much no way for it to get scratched...

I'm going to be honest I don't know because I've only taken it off once and didn't bother to examine the phone close enough to see micro scratches.
No scratches with Otterbox Commuter.

I have a nice case. I was just stating that people are lookin for a case. I don't use a case for my "daily driver" but if I did then I'd peek around but the Voyager is the beast I need when things are gonna get rough in my day.
This is actually pretty funny, I think it's the case itself causing your scratches!
I've put a tempered screen protector on front, and I cut out a square of film screen protector and put it on the camera lens. And then I just carry my phone (by itself) in my left pocket, it looks as new and shiny as ever, even the aluminum band!
I hope they charged you a restocking fee for taking back the phone because it was scratched. That's idiotic considering there are many factors as to why it could have happened. Get over it.

I think it's more idiotic to hope for someone else's misfortune, specially when they have a point (even if you don't see it) and it's not affecting you in any way
I sell these all day and am a brand advocate for Samsung & there is definitely an issue with the finish. Not sure if it has to do with the batches but the trend seems to be that cases trap small pieces of dirt/lint/whatever and grind it in over time. If you don't use a case and you're gentle with it you'll be fine, but otherwise it's bound to show over time. IPhones do the same thing though, so it's sort of the price of finally having a metal housing
I am really rough on everything, and I haven't had any problems with scratches. No case or screen protector, and not a single scratch on a two month old phone (knock on wood). I keep my phone in a leather pouch when I'm out and about.
