[Q] downgrading to GB - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
i am new here , totally amateur so if am violating any rules of this forum i am sorry for that, next time i wont post anything like this
i have a question...i have sony xperia arc S Lt18i (rooted) with ICS 4.0.4 (4.1.B.0.587) , i am thinking to downgrade my phone to gingerbread(4.0.2.A.0.62) coz ICS is lagging on my phone, so my question is if i downgrade my phone to GB will i be able to install xperia S theme/launcher and xperia V walkman on my phone with gingerbread?
secondly in downgrading to GB do i have to remove/wipe my user data (sms etc)? or it will remain safe?
thankyou.

Hello
Before downgrading to GB, I suggest you to:
1. Connect your SD card to the PC and remove any system folders from it. (.android_secure, files in the root of the SD, and all other ones that you didn't create by yourself).
Reason: many performance problems and even crashes were found with many users that left "garbage" from the previous system in the SD;
2. You most certainly need to "wipe data / factory reset" in CWM, for the same reason stated above. This formats and wipes every partition that matters, and doesn't touch your SD card. So your personal files are safe.
Just a note: The .62 variant of the gingerbread, as far as I know, can not be rooted. So do some googling and it may be better downgrading to the .48 instead.
Hope I helped.

thanku soooooooooooo much, ok another stupid question, after downgrading to .48 do i have to root my phone again or i can save my current root with some trick/option? please dont laugh on my stupid question i know i have to root my phone again but just thought i should ask for some trick/option
secondly on GB would i be able to install xperia S theme/launcher and xperia V walkman on my phone with GB?

When going back to gb. If using flashtools it is better to use older version like v7 or v8.
Once you flash phone you wipe all data from it excluding sd card. So yes you will need to root again.
If you use .42/.58 you can use root method from flashtools.
When it comes to installing mods you can only use gb mods as they use different systemui and frameworks.

Updating Firmware With Changed/Deleted System Apps

I've read about updates needing the system applications installed to work. I have a few questions:
Do all apps have to be installed (including games)?
I've uninstalled some apps to download again to install them as user apps to move to my SD card. Do I need to re-install these back to system apps? Or is the fact they're installed good enough?
Will a factory reset put everything back the way it should be so I can just do that?
Finally, why do you have to have it the way it was to enable updates?
Thanks in advance. I've read quite a few posts about having to have system apps installed, but not why or which ones.

I also need to know these things...

Yeah, I'm eagerly awaiting ICS. I guess if I must ask a question, it would be, why do you have to have the original system apps to update properly?

Should I post this in the general bit? Or has it been answered many times and people are sick of answering? I haven't found any answers, despite looking for days.

I want to customise my phone as much as I can (dare), but after reading about the update thing I'm holding off in case I forget exactly what I did to put back to update-able-ness.

Why don't you just install the latest firmware after backing everything up (just in case something goes wrong) that way all the system apps are fine and it should be fine with an update service.. but why wouldn't you all just wait for an official rom to be leaked and flash it your phones with flashtool?

New Xperia play rooted

Hi, i've rooted my xperia play and wanted to know if their was a custom ROM out there that had everything working like stock.
Secondly, I have a pre loaded 8GB card on here, is there any way to increase internal app memory, maybe make 500 mb of the sd card part of it.
And anyone have a list of good games, that use the controller and aren't memory hogs on the phone.
PS can I use app2sd?? Also have attached pic of the ABOUT PHONE section on the play.
thank you

you will need your bootloader unlocked (if it isn't already) before you can flash custom roms... and aboyut the games and controller, most custom roms have a glitch that the circle only acts as a back button so dont really work as a control any more,
my opinion (and thats just it an opinion) stick with stock/stock-based if you want to use your controller with normal games! (emulators work fine as you can manually assign keys)
Perhaps you can try DarkforestMix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1482104
for apps on ext partition. load recovery click partition sd card it will format sd card. then download Link2sd from market and follow steps. Darkforest 3.0.5 is best stock based rom imho

Hi, can someone tell me if the Darkforest 3.0.5 stock rom has everything working just like a stock rom ? gamepad, touch etc
Also is the battery life any good or should i change kernels?
Lastly i am going to format my sd card and do the Links2sd as mentioned above, i wanted to know if installing the Darkforest is as simple as just placing it on my external SD booting up to CWM and then flashing the ROM...?
thank you for any help (and for the help already given greatly appreciate it)

Hey, I'm in the same position, and was wondering if someone could link me to CWM for locked bootloaders, and to Darkforest 3.0.5? Also what would I have to do if a newer version of Darkforest comes out?
Anyone? Sorry to be a pest >.<

maybe make your own thread? but go on the market and look for something like cwm recovery installer xperia.
Unlocking your Bootloader is well worth doing.

Titanium requires root. Helium doesn't, but you need to install some drivers on your pc and connect the phone to the pc (just to initialize the first time or every time you reboot) if you want to backup without rooting. (dunno why he doesn't want to root, root allergies?). Or he could just use the Sony Backup&Restore app. There's been some fuss about it not working, but from what I can see I can backup data of system apps just fine. Not Play Store apps, but most keep their data on the SD and you can find what apps you had installed in the Play Store.

There's threads with ICS ftf files in the General section. I don't need to hold your hand do I? Thorough steps: backup your data, open flashtool (read a guide on how to use flashtool, it pretty much explains itself though), flash the ftf that you download (oh and wipe data if you switch Android versions), reboot your phone, restore your backup.
where can i find recovery image to boot xperia s in recovery mode and kernel for stock Jellybean???

after update to .244 from .423, old backup not working!!! HELP!

Yesterday I received the OTA update ".244". I was on.423 earlier. So I started making backups. I used PCC for some part and sony backup and restore app in the phone for other. But after the successful update and a a successful factory reset, when I Tried restoring backups from both PCC. and backup n restore app(on phone), the PCC said backup on the phone currupted and restarted my phone. I thought there might hv been an error so started restoring again. But it failed yet again and restarted my phone. This same thing happened when I tried the backup and restore app.
I have the backup data on my pc and my microsd but cant restore. My phone is stock, locked, non rooted.
Help please!
Have had the same issue after updating to .244. The Reason is that the old android 4.1...Backups are not compatible to Android 4.2.... Someone said later that there is a message in pcc for that before updating......I did not recognize this message....anyway..... you have to do everything from scratch.

Appreciate the help man, will definitely try this.

would this work? twrp data restore?

if I backed up my current phone in twrp. put that file on another phone (not an xs) and selected to restore data only.
would that work?

Which rom.
It depends if framework of xperia s and second phone are similar.
I personaly wont advice that, you can brick or some part of phone wont work due framework.

Since u r restoring data only, i think its concerned only with another phone's recovery being the same one which u used to backup(in this case its TWRP) and also i think it may be this one thing related.. Both should have same version of Android OS running.. I mean if u did a backup of JB 4.1, then u should restore it in 4.1 only.. Most of the apps won't work in ICS and 4.2 JB as well.. U can give it a try and give a feedback of what happened.. Make sure u have another backup in the new phone, just in case..
that's what I'm wondering. both are on 4.3 and obviously as it's data only and nothing system related. surely it should work? maybe get a couple of force closes on contacts etc. but majority should?

Yea data should be working. But try to have working backup just in case
