Hey guys! I was wondering if there is a way to trick my phone into thinking it is on wifi when really it is on 3G. I really want to play N.O.V.A. 3 multiplayer, and my wifi sucks. I have googled, and googled, and googled, and can't get anything to work.
Any ideas?
Thank you!

I guess, make a shortcut for airplane mode.
Is there an option in the games settings for allowing play on mobile data? That's what I've always found.
Pink pony Gs2 i777
Pure Google Gnex i9250
Pink stallion Gs3 i747
Stock tweaked Asus tf201
No there is not a setting to play games over mobile data.
Make a shortcut for airplane mode? Could you explain yourself further what you mean?

Hi guys, dunno if this is a stupid question but is it possible to use google maps on wifi? the GPRS costs on my network (Orange) are rather high and seeing as the ipod touch accomplishes this, can the Touch HD also do this? and if so how?
thanks.
Just turn your wifi on before launch app I think
Def working
As previous post suggested turning on Wi-fi before launching application does in fact work, by doing that you can even use a basic Street View on it and also Latitude.
ok thanks guys.
cant believe i didnt try that...

Just tested, multiplayer for Robotek works fine for me, 100% stock, no root.

I had that problem too. I tweeted @hexage and they told me it just takes time to match you. I'd actually play it a lot more if it didn't take so long to match. Had the same problem on my OG Epic. Haven't played a ton on my touchpad, but I'll see how long it takes on there...
i am completely stock atm.
Hey guys
I treid today to use the wifi direct function but i cant configure like the sgs2,.
Tryin to send a movie from a sgs2 to my GN but it didn't work anyone an idea or some help
Thnx in advance

Same here. This morning I tried to setup Wifi-Direct on GN but was a no go. My SGS2 has Wifi direct configuration where you can name your device and setup password etc plus scan for other devices. GN however doesn't have anything like this and you can only turn it ON or OFF. SGS2 scanned for 2 mins and wasn't able to see GN.
Do I need any applications or is there something that myself and OP is missing?
I tried this this morning with a coworker who has a GN too but couldn't figure it out. I also tried the beam thing which says you can just magically hold them back to back and it works? Are there apps that need to be installed to get these things working?
Anyone have any links to literature on beam and wifi direct?
Bump.
This thing does seem odd enough to be worthy of some bumping.

what is wifi direct?

It's a new technology that should allow compatible devices to connect to each other over wifi to transfer files without an access point. Pretty much an ad hoc type network.
I would assume we should be able to use it to connect to other GN but it MAY just be OS support and we need an actual application to make it work?
Bump. This is incredibly annoying.

Beam works fine. Try opening a homepage, and it will ask to transmit when touching another Nexus
Sendt fra min Galaxy Nexus
Seems like maybe they have only baked the API into the OS, but we need devs to create apps that make it useful, based on the Platform Highlights for 4.0 and the Demo app they released. Bummer. Some patient waiting to do, I guess.
I've searched the market for a "wifi-direct" app but there doesn't seem to be one.
Anyone else found anything?
Apparently not a very popular option among people out there.
bump. ytd nite trying to transfer all the songs and ringtones from my GalNote to GalNex using wifi direct, then dunno how to proceed cz totally cant find any settings or configuration in GalNex. enabled both wifi direct, den GalNote can detact my GalNex but failed to connect :X
Bump. My brother has sgs2 and I looked dumb trying to try wifi direct....nothing happens. No options besides on/off

Me too, I tried setup my gn wifi direct, but it w/o any setting, then i use my bro s2 to search my gn mobile, s2 search the name called android xxx, i think this is my mobile, bcs when i off my gn wifi direct, s2 cant search any mobile, when i tried connect my gn mobile, but finally after i wait over 2 mins it still not success.
I think we can conclude if you need to check with forums on the internet and still haven't started transmitting anything two weeks later, it's not a very "direct" sort of technology.
So people at the office have Wifi-direct and I have Android beam. And neither works with each other.
This is Android-awesomeness right now.
Anyone found out how it works? sorry for the bump but good be very useable...
I haven't tried this but it is at least a suggestion. Try opening the gallery, opening a picture and then hitting the share button. Maybe there is an option in there for wi-fi direct?
EDIT: Nevermind. Looks like I mis-understood what this feature was.
Check out this to see if it helps?
http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/WiFiDirectDemo/index.html
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/wifi/p2p/package-summary.html
"remember that the feature is supported only on Android 4.0 (API level 14) and higher versions of the platform. " So looks like you have to connect to another device running ICS
wifi is there but not functional yet
guys in galaxy nexus the capability to use WIFI direct is there but not programmed and left to be added as an add on or so .. developers need to make a program or even a rom to enable this feature but most likely google will adapt the samsung software for wifi direct just like SGSII ..
hope someone just develop it soon
Yep it's purely an api for developers to use in order to connect to the same app(or another one with an official api) running on another device.
Google may very well add this into the gallery and so on, but for now it's a developer option. The implementation on the sgs2 on the other hand does not allow for developers to add in AFAIK and it's purely for use in the samsung apps.
I compiled and installed that WifiDirectDemo app and it doesn't really work. The GN and SGS2 see each other but the connection does nothing.
Im useing the epic 4g touch, I'm rooted on the strongsteve rom. BTW,this rom is freaking sic man,I LOVE,this rom!!!!! Formally the new senzesation wich was very neat and fast.
Any how,im tryin to hook up a ps3 and the strongsteve rom does have the hotspot hack.so it works great. Im getting a nat3 and it wont let me play with other people. HOW can i get to nat2? Has anyone found a way around this? Ive searched high and low. To no avail. Look at my post count. I found out how to root and flash just from reading this site and acs. So i do my homework before i post. Thanx in advance guys
Nat 3 refers to Wireless with a bad connection.
I'd recommend getting Wireless tether and not using the sprint hotspot hack. I believe wireless tether is in the market, but if it's not you can easily find an APK.
Also, I'm not accusing you in anyway, shape, or form. But a lot of idiots can root their phone (I'm not calling you dumb or anything),, and never stop bugging rom devs.

Tried static IP address on ps3? Maybe the limited connection is DNS issue.

I do not use a custom rom. I'm rooted with stock EL29, and Rouge recovery. I also have the ACS AIO mod isntalled (which includes Sprint hotspot mod). I've used this to tether to my laptop and share connection to my Xbox, without any NAT issues.
I'd imagine if that method works for me, then the same setup (minus the laptop as a bridge) would work even better for you on the PS3.

Why would u add that? "any idiot can root a phone" so what if they can? I jus wanna kno how to work around nat3. If you added that because i included all the mods done to my phone,im sure i would hav gotten "we need more info"

Even if you manage to get to NAT2 the ping times are going to be very high - over 100ms, probably around 130ms or higher. If you're fine with say, shooting at someone and finding out they were 10 feet to the right the entire time then go for it. Otherwise get REAL internet.
As said before, try setting a static IP for your PS3 or using the USB tether function, that might get you to NAT2. Also get something like Droidwall and firewall all programs while tethering. Turn off background data and sync also. Lastly, you might try this and see if it helps also. That's all I got.
Yea, good luck playing a high end video game online with your 3g/4g connection.. It works, but lags. As suggested already, use wifi tether or another tether app and use it wired, not the hotspot or wireless tether. And wouldnt recommend online gaming lol unless you want your scores to drop

What this guy said is very true. 3G is not good for online gaming, especially when the game is unoptimized and expects a broadband connection. I tried playing Quake 3 on my phone over 3g once. It lagged to all hell. The only way to play was to install the dreamcast dialup optimizations.
This is such a terrible idea lol. "Hey guys I'm gonna go play Gears of War over 3G." Lagfest waiting to happen.
3g sucks for online gaming lol. However I played over 4g before and the connection was pretty stable and playable!

Well a 12mb/s connection ain't no joke. Assuming you can get something like that with wimax.
Sent from my Super Sexy Epic touch.
Yeah I get better internet speeds over WiMax than I do with my :"15mbps" internet at home. Just the ping was way higher, which is really what matters in most online video games.

I get 2-3 bars throughout my home on 4g so my speeds are always around 6-12MB/s. I also stream hd fine on my ps3 thru Netflix, Vudu, and Hulu Plus!

So I tried asking this on many threads but not many people seem to want to help, so I thought I'd just make a new thread about it.
Running ICS official rom, some games like where's my water and radiant HD just FC as soon as you start them ONLY if you're not connected to the internet or if you have airplane mode activated, yet they work perfectly fine with a connection.
Can anybody try this and see if it happens to you too, or if anybody knows how to fix it or any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks

This is happening to me too.
Although I have a Galaxy Tab2 7.0 ICS
It might be ICS that may be doing the force closing.
I too, am hoping that there is a solution here online.
Yeah it is indeed very annoying, especially when you want to play that specific game on a long trip and you don't have internet.

Post in this thread about the issue with Where's My Water. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469284
Temple Run is also another game that will not run without an active connection. When I go to Settings, data usage, I see the game has used some data.
For some reason, temple run seems to work with me without an internet connection, weird.
