Hey guys
I treid today to use the wifi direct function but i cant configure like the sgs2,.
Tryin to send a movie from a sgs2 to my GN but it didn't work anyone an idea or some help
Thnx in advance

Same here. This morning I tried to setup Wifi-Direct on GN but was a no go. My SGS2 has Wifi direct configuration where you can name your device and setup password etc plus scan for other devices. GN however doesn't have anything like this and you can only turn it ON or OFF. SGS2 scanned for 2 mins and wasn't able to see GN.
Do I need any applications or is there something that myself and OP is missing?
I tried this this morning with a coworker who has a GN too but couldn't figure it out. I also tried the beam thing which says you can just magically hold them back to back and it works? Are there apps that need to be installed to get these things working?
Anyone have any links to literature on beam and wifi direct?
Bump.
This thing does seem odd enough to be worthy of some bumping.

It's a new technology that should allow compatible devices to connect to each other over wifi to transfer files without an access point. Pretty much an ad hoc type network.
I would assume we should be able to use it to connect to other GN but it MAY just be OS support and we need an actual application to make it work?
Bump. This is incredibly annoying.

Beam works fine. Try opening a homepage, and it will ask to transmit when touching another Nexus
Sendt fra min Galaxy Nexus
Seems like maybe they have only baked the API into the OS, but we need devs to create apps that make it useful, based on the Platform Highlights for 4.0 and the Demo app they released. Bummer. Some patient waiting to do, I guess.
I've searched the market for a "wifi-direct" app but there doesn't seem to be one.
Anyone else found anything?
Apparently not a very popular option among people out there.
bump. ytd nite trying to transfer all the songs and ringtones from my GalNote to GalNex using wifi direct, then dunno how to proceed cz totally cant find any settings or configuration in GalNex. enabled both wifi direct, den GalNote can detact my GalNex but failed to connect :X
Bump. My brother has sgs2 and I looked dumb trying to try wifi direct....nothing happens. No options besides on/off

Me too, I tried setup my gn wifi direct, but it w/o any setting, then i use my bro s2 to search my gn mobile, s2 search the name called android xxx, i think this is my mobile, bcs when i off my gn wifi direct, s2 cant search any mobile, when i tried connect my gn mobile, but finally after i wait over 2 mins it still not success.
I think we can conclude if you need to check with forums on the internet and still haven't started transmitting anything two weeks later, it's not a very "direct" sort of technology.
So people at the office have Wifi-direct and I have Android beam. And neither works with each other.
This is Android-awesomeness right now.
Anyone found out how it works? sorry for the bump but good be very useable...
I haven't tried this but it is at least a suggestion. Try opening the gallery, opening a picture and then hitting the share button. Maybe there is an option in there for wi-fi direct?
EDIT: Nevermind. Looks like I mis-understood what this feature was.
Check out this to see if it helps?
http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/WiFiDirectDemo/index.html
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/wifi/p2p/package-summary.html
"remember that the feature is supported only on Android 4.0 (API level 14) and higher versions of the platform. " So looks like you have to connect to another device running ICS
wifi is there but not functional yet
guys in galaxy nexus the capability to use WIFI direct is there but not programmed and left to be added as an add on or so .. developers need to make a program or even a rom to enable this feature but most likely google will adapt the samsung software for wifi direct just like SGSII ..
hope someone just develop it soon
Yep it's purely an api for developers to use in order to connect to the same app(or another one with an official api) running on another device.
Google may very well add this into the gallery and so on, but for now it's a developer option. The implementation on the sgs2 on the other hand does not allow for developers to add in AFAIK and it's purely for use in the samsung apps.
I compiled and installed that WifiDirectDemo app and it doesn't really work. The GN and SGS2 see each other but the connection does nothing.

Has anyone successfully tethered their VZW Gnex using native tether option (on any rom)?
I can get any other device ro connext and user the hotspot i create. But when i connect my xbox to the wifi hotspot the xbox tells me it cannot obtain IP address.
I've tried a ton of ways to fix this, even manually setting the IP the xbox looks for and such. But still no go.
If i go back to any 4.1 rom I'm able to connect to xbox and user my lte tether with no issues.
Anyone with a similar experience or fix to this? I've been trying to figure it out ever since 4.2 dropped and thought I'd finally see what my fellow forum users have to say on this subject
Thanks in advance for everything guys!
Re: WIFI HOTSPOT ISSUE on 4.2+ (and xbox)
Quick bump
Sorry
I usually don't bump. I just been going nuts trying To see if it's only me having the problem
Any tips besides the basic stuff to fix an issue with tether? (To xbox360)
I can't get tethering to work on any 4.2.* ROM. Native or the WiFi Tethering app.
Since this is an absolutely critical feature for me, it looks like I'll never be upgrading.
I would seriously like an answer to this as well. I was going to make another thread here asking about the same thing because it seems that w/e rom I used that's based off of 4.1.w/e allows me to use my wifi hotspot just fine. I know it's not any of the devices receiving the signals problem because they were working just fine before I updated my g-nex to 4.2.1 or 4.2.2. Seriously....I've reached out and I get no answers. I don't want to go back to older versions because I shouldn't have too. I've used almost all different kinds of wifi apps like foxfi and others, but foxfi force closes, and all the others just don't work. I really need this feature to work! Any ideas?.....anybody?
Re: WIFI HOTSPOT ISSUE on 4.2+ (and xbox)
Thanks guys
I KNEW i wasn't alone
The error i get on xbox is it cant obtain ip address
When i look under settings about phone ever since 4.2 it always says ip address unavailable.
I was hoping we could collaborate at least a workaround by "spoofing" an ip and then manually setting it on the xbox. Unless we can stumble across a true fix to why this has started happening
Thanks for the input, lets me know I'm not going completely insane yet hahah
Thats weird. I have used my phone to tether my tablet, PS3 and my work computer. Hearing people say it doesn't work for them is surprising. I'm running the CM10.1 nightlies and using the native wifi tethering.
EDIT: I just realized you guys were mainly talking about the Xbox. lol, oops
Re: WIFI HOTSPOT ISSUE on 4.2+ (and xbox)
Yea that's the thing
I can tether to ANYTHING else just fine.
In fact i just tethered to my tablet and my computer.
The only thing that i get the Ip cant be obtained issue on is when trying Ti straight hotspot tether to the xbox itself.

You are not alone my friend. This is preventing me from updating. I'm following another thread where they found a fix for the Wi-Fi tether for root users to work properly on 4.2.2, but I have not received confirmation on if it also fixes and allows the Xbox to work again. I'm tempted to just try it myself and see what happens.... but haven't as of yet.
Edit: This is that thread.

I decided it was time. I made a backup. Flashed BB8, and just to be sure, I tried the native tethering. Didn't work. Then I tried this apk the guy modified for WiFi tether for root users. I tried absolutely ever different combination possible in settings, and still the Xbox would not work.
This guy reprogrammed that app, so now I'm going to try getting ahold of him to see if he can specifically look into the Xbox issue. Who knows. Maybe he is a miracle worker.
For now, I'm already back to BB6 4.1.2.

I don't know if this is an issue with the new OS but it seems that we cannot run tethering apps (rooted). specifically it is the WEXT (ad-hoc) function... Which as far as I can tell is the way it broadcasts to other computers. Please don't respond telling me to use "foxfi" or some other "non-rooted" app. The reason we use the rooted ability is to be able to bypass the network hoops and use a "backdoor" to get what's rightfully ours. The function of teather ring was working fine on the pervious jellybean OS so it goes to say that someone just needs to fix this bug. Please help

It'll tide you over until they officially fix it in the Play Store.

There's an actual file there. Use your browser's search function to look for ".apk".
If you're a Sprint user, it won't work. Look for WiFi Tether Router in the Play Store. I'm using that now and it works fine.

For anyone with a Samsung phone or tablet, have you tried NFC transfers between it and your N7? I was able to transfer a photo from the N7 to my S3 but I'm unable send anything from the S3 to the N7. Both devices make the noise but nothing happens.
Are you guys able to make it work?

On my N7, I have NFC and Android beam turned on. On my S3, with NFC on and S Beam on, nothing happened - not even a sound. With NFC on and S Beam off, there was a sound from both devices but nothing happened. I don't see "Android beam" anywhere in the S3 settings.
Found the Android Beam setting in the NFC menu and got it to work. Thanks guys.
One more question...when I beam something, bluetooth toggles on for both devices. Is this normal?

I never noticed that. By my limited NFC knowledge, that's basically how all NFC transfers work besides S-Beam. I could be wrong so don't hold me to that info lol

It should only turn Bluetooth on if you're transferring a larger file (say an image or video file). NFC, while low power has a VERY slow transfer speed (about 53 KB/s at maximum). For example, if you wanted to transfer a 8 MB image, it would take around 2.5 minutes. Now it might not seem like a long time, but keep in mind you have to have both devices touching (or near touching) for that entire period.
Instead what Google has done is that when Beam detects that you want to send over a picture/video it will automagically turn on bluetooth, pair the devices, send the data and turn off bluetooth. Pretty convenient in my opinion.

Gotcha...the picture I was sending from my S3 to the N7 was a little over 2MB. The thing is, the bluetooth did toggle off after the transfer on my N7 but it did not toggle off on the S3. I guess Samsung does it a little differently?
One odd thing I've noticed is that while NFC transfers that activate Bluetooth work, I can't connect my N7 to the S3.

I had to turn Sbeam off at the samsung device, then it worked both directions.
My Nexus 7 sucks and doesn't send files at all. They all end in error.
I have noticed a couple of this on my Note II running JEdiX16:
1. If I beam a picture from my Note II's gallery app it sends me to the play store with a blank page that says, "file not found" or something like that. I think its trying to find the Galaxy Note II's gallery app.
2. I have the Jelly Bean gallery installed also, and that one works to transfer files.

I've also had that happen. But then it worked, I think I may of had to enable Android beam on one of the devices. Not sure if this fixed it or it just started working.
Double check you have Android Beam enabled on both devices.
Settings>More (or More Settings)>Android Beam and make sure it on.
Probably not what you're looking for but if you wanted to do a large amount of files via wifi-direct using NFC as the handshake, i use superbeam from the play store between my N7 and Evo 4G LTE and transfered a 560 meg folder of vacation photos without a hitch. Both devices have to have superbeam installed of course.
I also have an S3 and everything is fine for me. For file transfers, I love and highly recommend SuperBeam from the play store.

Just as the title says. I used to tether every day on the train with my tmobile plan. I flashed manually to the official kitkat image a few days ago, and since then my tethering has been blocked by tmobile.
Has anyone else run into this and solved it?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
This is really disconcerting for me. I had my sim in a mobile hotspot with T-mobile and bought the Nexus 7 to put that sim into. I would still be able to tether with the tablet and also use SMS directly from the device instead of accessing it through a webpage. With this update, Google breaks the two features I bought this device for. Not only is this a problem but I can't seem to find a place to actually complain to Google about this and expect to get any kind of answer about it.
Check the nexus 5 q&a section. There is a hack to fix this.

I'm going to flash back to 4.3 tonight to see if i can get my tethering working again.
There is no benefit to 4.4 on my nexus 7 compared to 4.3. Actually, there is only a downside, many apps I use just crash on 4.4.
Will report back tonight if my tether starts to work again.
ok, an update as I said. I flashed the previous version "jls36i" stock image back, and I'm happily tethering once again on the train
Does anyone know where I have to go on the internet to get an answer from Google as to why tethering is disabled on Kit Kat for the Nexus 7? I've tried to find some place to send an email, have a discussion, fill out a web form, or anything but I can't find anyplace that I'm sure will get me an answer back. I'm not a social media person but I will join one if I can get an answer to my questions. Any help would be appreciated.
They've definitely changed something in the past month or two. I was able to tether to my ipod w/o any issues. I hit my 500mb limit today. I figured, no big deal, will just fire up my vpn (L2TP) from the ipod. Done deal, right? Nope. They can still detect it somehow.
I will have to check it out on my pc. I have a hunch they can somehow tell that tethering is enabled on the phone (nexus 5 4.4).
We have given our young daughters Galaxy S ll’s. Our cell provider is kajeet.com which has decent parental controls on phone usage including Internet access via the cell connection. But kajeet doesn’t affect the wifi connection. Hence, Internet access is available.
We would like to shut down the wifi and have the phones used only for texting and talk. The girls have other forms of (monitored) Internet access.
Does anyone have a solution for shutting down the wifi connection?
I have done quite a bit of research on the web for an answer and haven’t come up with anything that is largely within our control.

First up, what model phone are we talking about (sticker on the phone chassis under the battery) ? Reason I ask is, I noticed Kajeet uses Sprint, which means there's a good chance you're in the wrong forum. As the I9100 wasn't sold in great numbers in the US, various carriers have their own variants, which have their own forums here.
I honestly doubt you can do it (I'm not aware of any way to block access outright), you can probably use one of the myriad security apps on Google Play to block WiFi access to individual apps (I.E all of them). But that might be different for different SGS2 variants (being an I9100 forum, I only know this for the I9100).
If you do have a different variant, we'll have the thread moved & maybe those who have the same phone might be able to tell you something different.
Months ago on cm10.1 i had managed to completely disable wifi by accident on numerous occasions by flashing old versions of dorimanx kernels that update the wifi drivers, then flash stock cm kernel again that uses old drivers, couldn't turn wifi on or off until I reflashed cm, so it is indeed possible. Not sure how you'd go about this. Maybe remove wifi drivers from rom if you are rooted? Sorry I'm not much help, just thought I'd share this.

my opinion, disableing wifi from a young kid will not stop him to access internet from any other place instead it will make him search and found more just because he dont have easy access to information he want. soo this is not the right thing to do but start takling to him and understanding his
needs will do more good. But this is just my opinion it seems thees days there are too many ways to find out things and there is noone who can shut them all off. Cheers!!

I'm a Moto Atrix 4G and HD user. I know from development on the 4G, we could disable the wifi by not installing certain packages or flashing a kernel without the required lib/module files. I'm in the middle of fixing a friend's S2/Epic 4G touch and I saw this thread. I would think that something similar would be available here, but i am just starting out with this process of helping my friend out so I'm not sure what files really affect the wifi. I'm sure you could root the device and delete the files that enable wifi access, but I'd have to do some digging for that before i advise any further.
