Using google maps on wifi? - Touch HD Themes and Apps

Hi guys, dunno if this is a stupid question but is it possible to use google maps on wifi? the GPRS costs on my network (Orange) are rather high and seeing as the ipod touch accomplishes this, can the Touch HD also do this? and if so how?
thanks.

Just turn your wifi on before launch app I think

Def working
As previous post suggested turning on Wi-fi before launching application does in fact work, by doing that you can even use a basic Street View on it and also Latitude.

ok thanks guys.
cant believe i didnt try that...

Netcounter

This is my first android phone so I am still finding my way around it, I am looking for a little bit of help.
I installed netcounter and everything seems to be ok it opens and displays the data screens but it never updates the wifi data. (I did a search but found nothing for my problem).
Am I supposed to do something else after the install ? Any help would be much appreciated I also emailed the developer but never got a reply
If it doesn't count WiFi isn't that a good thing? Means what it does say is your mobile Internet which is what you want to keep an eye on...
same problem
i got same problem on my new Desire, wifi is zero all the time, but it does count my mobile data, but probably wrong.. looks like it counts them altogether
lol, guys please
just think logically, what are apps like this made for? to monitor your internet usage so you dont go over your monthly plan, WiFi is free so why would it monitor it and confuse you with overall results?
To be fair though the app has a specific section for WiFi data usage which only ever displays 0 but is clearly meant to show your usage, so it is not working correctly.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
no idea why, but it looks like that.. i was using wifi and count of my mobile data was on the increase
but in my brothers legend works fine
well if your with T-Mobile you can always check how much you used on the My T-Mobile page

Of course it should work for wi fi! The app works correctly on other phones. I have contacted the author for a fix for desire. And its very useful to see what activities use up the mb on wi fi so u can estimate what usage it will use when not on wi fi
still active?
I've been able to patch the sourcecode to get it to work on the HTC Desire, which was very easy since it is basically the same device as the Nexus One. I've been using that patched version without a problem.
I've submitted that patch to the author almost 3 weeks ago, but I've received no reply yet. I've also noticed that the application source code hasn't been updated since January, 3rd, so I suspect that this application isn't being actively developed anymore...
Does anybody have a good alternative that monitors both 3G and WiFi?
I'm using Network Monitor since I also couldn't get Netcounter to count wi-fi data. Network monitor doesn't have a problem with that.
Try Smart Monitor Lite, it measures both WiFi and mobile net. Works fine for me...

Thanks Luftwalk, I'll check it out, though up front I already know I won't like the ads. I live in Belgium so I won't be able to get rid of those...

[Q] automatic WiFi, any good apps?

Folks,
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with automatic WiFi switching apps? Basically after something that works on the desire with froyo. What I want it to do is poll the available WiFi networks every so often (say hourly) to see if my home network is avaiable, and connect if it is.
What do the demon hordes of xda suggest to try, or avoid?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Tasker is a app that can do that, and much more.
http://tasker.dinglisch.net
On there site you can download it, try it for a week and if you like it buy it. It's a rater expensive app but it has a lot of possibilities. There is also a market version but that has no trial.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it. Do you use this? If so, what for? Looks like there's tonnes of ability that I don't think I'd use.
Any other auto WiFi experience out there?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yeah it's true that for only wifi on at home it's a expensive app but i don't know any other ones.
And yes I use it, for now i have:
Wifi at home
Flight mode on, auto sync off and low brightens at night
5 minutes before my alarm goes off i turn flight mode off, brightness to auto again, wifi on and autosync back on
GPS turns on when opening maps or navigation
When there is a appointment in my school calendar my phone goes on vibrate during that time
When i open my terminal emulator it prompts the keyboard input method
This is after two weeks of using the app and there are a lot more possibility, they also have a wiki with example apps and some tutorials you can look at.
Y5 battery will do it for your home network, on market.
My EVO
I thought the Desire automatically does this with no 3rd party apps? All the OP is saying that they want to connect to a WiFi connection when it's available (as opposed to performing some action).
Or did I miss something??

I suspect that the OP wants an app that switches off WiFi, and only switches it on again when in range of a "known" WiFi network.
This is essentially what Y5 does - it only works if you have a cellular signal at that location, and basically when the WiFi network connection is lost it looks at the cell id and if it has changed turns WiFi off. When you get back into range of that cell again, it will switch WiFi back on again.

Dave

Wifi-direct

Hey guys
I treid today to use the wifi direct function but i cant configure like the sgs2,.
Tryin to send a movie from a sgs2 to my GN but it didn't work anyone an idea or some help
Thnx in advance
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Same here. This morning I tried to setup Wifi-Direct on GN but was a no go. My SGS2 has Wifi direct configuration where you can name your device and setup password etc plus scan for other devices. GN however doesn't have anything like this and you can only turn it ON or OFF. SGS2 scanned for 2 mins and wasn't able to see GN.
Do I need any applications or is there something that myself and OP is missing?
I tried this this morning with a coworker who has a GN too but couldn't figure it out. I also tried the beam thing which says you can just magically hold them back to back and it works? Are there apps that need to be installed to get these things working?
Anyone have any links to literature on beam and wifi direct?
Bump.
This thing does seem odd enough to be worthy of some bumping.

It's a new technology that should allow compatible devices to connect to each other over wifi to transfer files without an access point. Pretty much an ad hoc type network.
I would assume we should be able to use it to connect to other GN but it MAY just be OS support and we need an actual application to make it work?
Bump. This is incredibly annoying.

Beam works fine. Try opening a homepage, and it will ask to transmit when touching another Nexus
Sendt fra min Galaxy Nexus
Seems like maybe they have only baked the API into the OS, but we need devs to create apps that make it useful, based on the Platform Highlights for 4.0 and the Demo app they released. Bummer. Some patient waiting to do, I guess.
I've searched the market for a "wifi-direct" app but there doesn't seem to be one.
Anyone else found anything?
Apparently not a very popular option among people out there.
bump. ytd nite trying to transfer all the songs and ringtones from my GalNote to GalNex using wifi direct, then dunno how to proceed cz totally cant find any settings or configuration in GalNex. enabled both wifi direct, den GalNote can detact my GalNex but failed to connect :X
Bump. My brother has sgs2 and I looked dumb trying to try wifi direct....nothing happens. No options besides on/off
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Me too, I tried setup my gn wifi direct, but it w/o any setting, then i use my bro s2 to search my gn mobile, s2 search the name called android xxx, i think this is my mobile, bcs when i off my gn wifi direct, s2 cant search any mobile, when i tried connect my gn mobile, but finally after i wait over 2 mins it still not success.
I think we can conclude if you need to check with forums on the internet and still haven't started transmitting anything two weeks later, it's not a very "direct" sort of technology.
So people at the office have Wifi-direct and I have Android beam. And neither works with each other.
This is Android-awesomeness right now.
Anyone found out how it works? sorry for the bump but good be very useable...
I haven't tried this but it is at least a suggestion. Try opening the gallery, opening a picture and then hitting the share button. Maybe there is an option in there for wi-fi direct?
EDIT: Nevermind. Looks like I mis-understood what this feature was.
Check out this to see if it helps?
http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/WiFiDirectDemo/index.html
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/wifi/p2p/package-summary.html
"remember that the feature is supported only on Android 4.0 (API level 14) and higher versions of the platform. " So looks like you have to connect to another device running ICS
wifi is there but not functional yet
guys in galaxy nexus the capability to use WIFI direct is there but not programmed and left to be added as an add on or so .. developers need to make a program or even a rom to enable this feature but most likely google will adapt the samsung software for wifi direct just like SGSII ..
hope someone just develop it soon
Yep it's purely an api for developers to use in order to connect to the same app(or another one with an official api) running on another device.
Google may very well add this into the gallery and so on, but for now it's a developer option. The implementation on the sgs2 on the other hand does not allow for developers to add in AFAIK and it's purely for use in the samsung apps.
I compiled and installed that WifiDirectDemo app and it doesn't really work. The GN and SGS2 see each other but the connection does nothing.

Wifi grayed out

This has been going on for some time now. I cannot actually pinpoint when it happened. But whenever I am at work, I can connect to the network and it's grayed out. I can still browse and use some app but I don't get notifications from my apps and cannot use Google Talk, for example. That entire app is grayed out.
It's an 802.1x EAP - PEAP - MSCHAPV2.
Anyone got any ideas or tricks to fix this? It used to work before and it doesn't. I do not believe anything changed on our end. And I also cannot just restart the router at work. Thanks in advance.

Can you access gmail directly? Sounds like google services may be blocked by your network admin? Just a guess...
Im trying to understand what exactly is happening with you.
Are you getting a wifi signal and no notifications?
or are you not getting any wifi signal at all?
If you are getting a connection but notifications and google apps dont work, it could be that your work router those ports blocked or has a firewall infront of it.
If you are not getting any wifi signal at all, I would try and backup everything, and do a factory rest - update. basically a stock, unrooted wipe and reflash.
Don't know why our how to fix it. But I know that if your wifi is gray you still have data connection. And if it's blue your connected to Google services as well
Jellin' like a felon
Okay, thanks guys. The ports may be blocked. I get WiFi connection, but the indicator is grayed out. When that is so, I can still go into an app and use it with manual refreshes but I never get notifications automatically like I'm supposed to. They only start to pop in one I leave with and get back in the cellular network. And for an app like gtalk, I cannot use whatsoever as I'm signed out.

This happened to me before and basically it was how my IT guy setup our WiFi network in our office. I couldn't use any Google push services on my phone (gmail, gtalk, calender, etc...). Every thing would work fine when I was on data connection, but would stop on WiFi. I just stopped using my work WiFi when I was in the office. It definitely had something to do with the firewall/privileges of the WiFi network.

google push notification and so gtalk need ports like 5222,5223,5228
usually in a work wifi only port 80 (http traffic) and 443 (httpS traffic) are open

Do you have wifi set to turn off when the display turns off?
I came across this thread because I'm having the same problem with my GS3, the only thing that solved it was installing a WiFi manager app from the market.
Factory reset plus downgrading from 4.2.2 to 4.2.0 was the only thing that worked for me.
FIX FOR GREY WIFI/MOBILE DATA, and google account sync
HI THERE, sorry im new to e forum, anyways im using a SGS 3LTE with custom rom CM 10.2 android 4.3, CWM touch recovery. So many people are not able to connect to the play store and services over wifi, but only over mobile data. Another issue is that the cellular data and wifi tend to remain grey, unlike that of android 4.0 and back which remains blue. So to solve this heres what i did.
DID EVERY F**KING CRAP OUT THERE. DIDNT WORK.
What i did: use a file manager with root access, look for 'hosts' file in systempath 'system/etc/' and deleted it. So far so good, its permanently blue for both wifi and cellular data, and also i am able to access google apps and store without a hitch.
DO SHARE WITH ME UR FINDINGS/RESULTS AND SPREAD THE LOVE PEOPLE
On a side note: i used to flash and modify small roms for my old htc hd2, but the above fix was heard from a website from god knows where LOL, im singaporean, i speak singlish, and im proud of it so im not gonna apologise for the broken english
In case this helps anyone, the way I solved it at home with my Galaxy Nexus is by changing the setting of the router to Wireless G or N only. I have two routers, so I set one on 802.11g and the other on 802.11n only. By default my DLinks came with mixed wireless protocols. The problem with this is that it seems to confuse devices. That's why they also used to take long to connect to Wifi in general. Since I've made them only one standard now, they connect very quickly. Also, because I had mixed B, G and N on my best router, I never got to really use N. Turns out I had my authentication on WEP, and the only way you're getting N is by using WEP2 with AES.
Fix is here
Hello There, I tried to reset phone, clearing chache,Data but it wont work but now
I have a quick solution on this issue and grey wifi becomes blue in some minutes.
All you need is "Rooted Phone"
1.Install : Root Explorer
2. Grant SuperSU permission to Root Explorer
3. Mount Root Explorer into Read/Write (R/W).
4. Go To System > etc > locate "HOSTS" file in etc folder.
5. Edit Hosts file using root explorer
6. Insert the symbol # before the second set of IP address numbers then save the changes and exit.
7. Reboot your phone...
8. wifi icon will be blue as you start your phone back and some apps like Google play store, keep, etc will be start as normal.
Thanks.

[Q] Google Voice Speech to Text often unavailable since JB update

Ever since the Jelly Bean update the Google Voice function has been intermittently unavailable. If I keep canceling it out and opening it back up eventually it works. I did a factory reset and it didn't help. No one has posted about the issue so I wondered am I the only one? And is there a fix for it? Thanks, Jeff.
Note: Sometimes if I wait long enough the error that pops up says server unavailable.
App is called "Voice Search" by Google Inc and is version 2.1.4
You need to download "google search" that is google now. Both should be downloaded and in tts settings should be set to whatever you use. I use ivona because it sounds much better like a real voice.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Also every portion of the phone needs to be set to US english... the google now settings, tts settings, and the keyboard i believe....
It's not either of those. It's installed already and set up correctly. I even have english downloaded for offline use. I forgot to mention I'm all stock touchwiz never rooted, so there's no excuse for this issue. I don't know if the JellyBean data Keis put on my phone was corrupted somehow, or if everyone else has this issue but found a solution. That said does anyone have this problem or just me?

Well not everything gets spoken, but try to duplicate the issue again.... Ask it the same question over and over... ask it what time is it, it always reads that... then ask it who is the president of the united states, or what is the date.... all of those get read back... see if stumbles, and report back, and also report have u tried any resets or anything... stock jb?
I think I figured it out. My Smart Keyboard wants to use the voice and so did Google Voice Typing, so I unchecked the one I don't use and for the last minute I've had no issue. It will be a few days before I can be sure but I usually have this problem pretty frequently.

I was wrong about figuring this out by un-checking one of the voice keyboards in the keyboard menu. That solution worked out of coincidence.
I found that I could fix it every time I restarted; then I found I could go into airplane mode and back out to fix it; then I tried all the things airplane mode affected and found that I could turn off Bluetooth and it would work, and when I turned on Bluetooth it would stop working. I found this while sitting in my car which connects my Bluetooth to the radio and a microphone above my head. I will try to narrow the problem down further to see if any other Bluetooth situations cause the issue, and I will report back.
I've the the problem with bluetooth as well, but I literally just started experiencing the issue without bluetooth enabled about 5 minutes ago. No matter what I do Google can't connect to the server.

Ugh don't tell me that, I've even finally rooted this thing and tried roms but they still had the issue. Now the only other solution is to set in on fire and push it down a hill....That's how we had to deal with Yeller as well

Turns out it's something with my router's configuration. When I disabled wifi on the phone it started working. Anyone have any ideas what router settings might interfere with Google's voice recognition?
---------- Post added at 05:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:05 PM ----------
Okay, after some Googling I setup port forwarding for port 19294 and now it's working. Not sure why this new router is blocking that port as none of the others I've used ever have...
I am experiencing this issue as well. At home on wifi, google voice comes on right away and listens. On the road (in the car and with bluetooth on) it keeps saying initializing. Today I will try voice recognition in the car with bluetooth turned off and will report back.
