[Q] Why to Root Note 2? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, i recently bought Note2. I switched over from my 2 years old HTC desire which i had rooted in the very first month for various reasons.
Just to give you a background i am not against rooting. But i believe, since we are taking this risk, it should really be worth it. For my HTC, it had 128 mb of internal memory, no official upgrades and i loved cm. So it was all worth it.
Looking at Note2 it a better looking version of cyanogenmod. (off-course will a few features missing). Although i was used to reflashing my Desire every month, i havent found any substantial reason for rooting NOTE2. It has regular updates biggass memory and HDD. very fast CPU
Only thing i miss is a more powerful flashlight (Torch) and a stock 5x5 TW launcher (i am using go launcher now to leverage the screen real estate). So apart from this and that i've heard Gmail 4.2 has pinch and zoom. I havent heard of any substantial gains by rooting NOTE2.
Please list what are the advantages of rooting NOTE2. i know the advantages of rooting in genral. i am specifically talking of note 2. Also i dont want to you all to list advantages like nandroid backup CWM recovery etc. since my contacts sms / call logs and apps are already being backed up at google / dropbox / Evernote.. I am loking for something substantial.

I have a post questioning the same thing.

Baisically the only reason I woukd root is for the following (might not apply to you):
OpenVPN with TAP support.
SSH tunnel
TitaniumBackup

The Note 2 will be the first phone I don't root. There's really no need, IMO.
The Samsung software with it's S-Pen features is a bit too complex to trust "ROM chefs" and such. I'll just enjoy it as-is.

Also other fonts and "adfree" are reasons for me
Greetings.

Thanks for the quick response. Specially the link. Most folks on the thread state that custom roms or even root has not been a great benefit to them in case of Note2. i do not need the above functionality you mentioned since the only reason i need vpn / ssh is to connect to work. Which i do from my laptop. But i will be on the look out for anything that pops up. Thanks again

My reason for rooting ANY android phone is...
Adaway
I'm sick and tired of flashing custom roms because I have found that after playing around with stock roms, I revert back to "stock firmware" anyway. So i just stick to stock samsung firmware. There really is no need to root for other than getting rid of the adds (i use adaway).

1. Titanium backup
2. Nandroid Backup
3. Debloat the rom with stuff i don`t need with ROMCleaner
4. Adblocking
5. Flashing mods like increae incall volume, brightess.
6. Flashing stock firmware and keep root with Mobile Odin
7. Raise the readahead values to load up apps, webpages, and other stuff faster
8. Overclock for performance or undervolt the kernel to save power.
Other users might also have other reasons so enough reason to do it i guess

Also to increase the internal storage by switch the external sd card with phones internal memory so making bigger internal memory.

The Note 2 is not out in the US yet (I'm so tempted to buy the International version) but when I do get it I plan on rooting it for Titanium Backup and Ad Free and a lot of root apps that I use but I don't see a point in flashing a custom ROM on it.. Its so perfect without it.. Wish it came with Tablet mode.. I love having my status bar at the bottom of my screen...

+1. In my opinion, this is ultimately the only reason for rooting - all the rest can be done in other ways.
However, some applications like orange cinema series (in France) check if the telephone is rooted - if so they won't work. Ultimately, rooting is becoming a very debatable benefit today - up to the next release of Android 5.0 on the New S5 processor. At that moment, i am sure that Samsung will delay updates as much as they can, since the hardware improvements become more marginal (with the exception, of course, of LTE) and therefore a differentiating factor between latest models and 1 year old devices. And then, all back to AOKP and CM27...
I say this by experience: my galaxy S I9000 works like a charm with Jelly Bean, and it would still be a froyo telephone if i would follow ORANGE F....

Do you really need more than 11 gig of internal memory? Assuming you transfer move your songs videos and other pictures etc in ur external.. why do you need more than 11 gb of internal?

Needs a root for things like sixaxis controller. Pretty cool to be able to use a wireless PS3 DualShock controller to play your favorite games.

For me the most important thing about rooting is themes, i hate stock theme(grey windows etc) and i love transparent status bar, other things wich pusch me to go for a root is basicly posibility to remove stock apps, custom kernels wich give u better performance and battery life and offcorse for my mod sd2extsd wich give u oportunity to save more things on ur phone(games and apps)
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium

I'd have to say solely for themes and removing bloatware with a custom rom to get the most of the ram availability.

11GB is tiny - particularly if you want a coupe of good games (you know you do lol) - apart from the 1-2GB of physical space the app takes (even when storing saves etc on SD) INSTALLING them takes more space and many require several more gigs ONLY during the install process (presume for unpacking etc) so you have to leave a couple of giggs free - leaving you with 8-9GB of usable space - not a lot.
If you use no games at all I agree 11GB might just do but other apps will fill it quick - eg: snote stores all its notes in internal SD (only small but multiply a few notes a day x a couple of years - it all adds up)
My friend has a 16GB SGNI - NO GAMES, but any medical apps (each 20-200M) and he's struggling for space
I just don't want to be limited (that's the whole reason I'm leaving ios for my mobile)

Ad blocking, and Nandroid alone are the main reasons why I rooted my phone..... there's also lucky patcher.....

I think you are confusing rooting with loading up a rom. Rooting is a must for a lot of users who want to customize. For example, let's say you want to use an NFC tag in your car to turn off wifi, turn on bluetooth and turn on GPS. This will work fine all the way up to the GPS part, which requires rooting to make it automated.
As others mentioned, titanium backup and other software needs it as well.
Rooting unlocks possibilities, it isn't loading CM.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

Don't worry about rooting until you find a need for it (get tired of ads, overclocking or just a general love for tweaking the build.prop file or any of the various apps requiring root access). Until then, just enjoy your phone

Advantage of rooting galaxy note 2
One of the advantages of rooting Galaxy note 2 is that it will start ready NTFS hdd and usb on-to-go....

It's not really necessary to root this phone in my opinion. Amazing phone and the first one I've owned which has left me wanting for nothing.

Help a Noob

Below is an email I received. I know very little about the Evo. Fielding suggestions:
hello!
Having a bit of reoccurring problem with my Android and posted my question on facebook. Jason responded & said I should ping you.
First three months with Sprint Evo - awesome. The 7 months since? Erratically hellish.
here's the main issue presently -
Okay Android aficionados, I need advisement - My HTC Evo keeps binding up because my contact information just piles & piles up. It's either a Sprint/Android thing and/or how the setup is pulling updates from Facebook, and to a lesser extent, Twitter and LinkedIn. Any ideas on how to fix this? Short of rooting or an iPhone? App2SD can't move enough stuff to the card. Had about 4 factory reboots in the past 7 months; Sprint tells me it's the number of apps I use (not the case) OR the combination of different apps (Possible, but I'm not buying it). Any way to send contact info to reside on SD card? Strip off the bloatware? Both are workarounds for the real problem but at this point... just need it to work.
Continued -
Fighting the urge to send Dan Hesse an email... For as much as this phone legitimately adds functionality to my life, it has cost me some serious time and sadly, some money also.
One more for good measure -
I would cut out updating my contacts but the information should be able to parse back & forth WITHOUT gumming up. Even a contact list of thousands should be able to do so, given WiFi and 4G (WiMax network) bandwidth. It's bad scripts, conflicting subroutines or bad hardware. HTC has typically had pretty good stuff & quality control is solid. I should be able to tote this thing and have access to my contacts, without having to also tote a laptop and/or tablet. right?
Okay, that's all of the facebook post(s)
Any thoughts? I'm trying to do this without rooting if possible but getting to the point that I might be ready to finally step off the ledge. Don't want to go Apple route; had to get a (used) MacBook Pro recently because I might have to go work for a (marketing/PR) agency and wanted to get back up to speed on OSX. More Apple than I want already.
Thanks & it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance!
---------- Post added at 02:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:31 PM ----------
A follow up email....
It's less that the speed isn't really crapping out, It's that the internal memory fills up. My contacts was sitting at 190mb earlier, 160mb now. All are google contacts, no phone contacts. When export the data, it's the paltry 1-2 mb.
Purged my facebook data on the phone to free up some space as a stop game. My phone suddenly bottomed out around 12 today with less than a megabyte of internal memory.
Sure size of the contacts have something to do with it but I've still yet to see any of the "social media personalities" (use that nomenclature loosely and dubiously) complain about contacts gumming up their phone. Probably aren't on Sprint and some get new phones comp'd often enough (to review?) that issue doesn't come up.
I believe in the spirit of Android for certain. It seems to be only thing that can prevent Apple from monopolizing the segment, since Microsoft can't come up with a hybrid of the two that works or gains any sort of real adoption. And I hate the idea of a guy in a mock turtleneck being the de facto source of how I should do things.
As far as non-rooted Android in practice, the current setup of stacking (carrier) bloatware, manufacturer UI / extraneous software and a slightly bastardized Android version (in my case, Gingerbread) seems like too many cooks in the kitchen, even before pouring in apps and data to be managed.
I like HTC's Sense UI but would love to vote all the Sprint crap off the island. If Sense is part of the problem... then I'm willing to look in different directions. I'll quite yammering
Yes, you have issues. You need to root your phone so you can properly move ALL APPS to the SD card. Whats the big deal about rooting? The main problem is space and Sprint does not care.
Root, use a sound custom ROM, move all apps to the card, live happily ever after.

I recomend you flash Myn's Two Point Two RLS5 as a ROM, it has loads of internal space left after flashing, and lots of add ons like custom keyboards, SBC kerbels, etc...

^ trust me, that was my first suggestion.
I do not know this person, but they do seem opposed to rooting. Not sure exactly how the internal is so low (I do not use an Evo, is this common?)
Surprised the internal memory is so little. My Vibrant has a ton.
Well, it has Sprint bloatware that can not be moved or removed. Also, contacts takes a chunk of space with that many. If he has fb on phone, that alone will cause problems.
Rooting is the only solution and then once he does, he will probably wished he would have done it months ago.
Seriously, WTF? ROOT IT! It wont break it. All it does is allow ,YOU, the owner, to do what you want with it.

^ what is the best method now? Assuming the latest GB.... I saw that Revolution was a beta... is that what most use? Better methods?
Thanks man. Wish I knew more about the Evo.
As far as I know yes, revolutionary beta is the only method for those who took the update. I rooted before the update so i used autoroot but I haven't heard of anyone having trouble with revolutionary, works great from what I understand.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Use revolutionary.
Follow instructions precisely.
You DO NOT need to get your serial number under battery!
When you download rev to your computer and run it, it puts your electronic serial number in brackets on the command prompt line. Use that esn and enter it on the rev website to get they key. Copy and paste that key to the command prompt and hit enter. Let it do its magic. Run superuser, INSTALL THE RECOVERY THAT IT PROMPTS.
Then you can switch to AmonRA after you reboot and confirm S-OFF.
Then make a full nandroid backup of your stock rom. Copy that backup to ur pc. Then install a stock rooted rom from here, then FREEZE apps you do not use, using titanium backup. Move all apps to sd card using titanium. Then reboot and see if your problem is solved.
Note...when you move an app that uses a widget, to the sd card, the widget no longer works.

New to Samsung galaxy S3 have a few questions please?

Hello all, been a long time since I have been here and have really missed it.
I recently switched carriers from Verizon to Sprint and got me a Galaxy S3 from Wireless.Amazon for $39.99, along with 3 Motorola photon q's for my kids and wife for a penny each... Not too shabby of deal IMO. Lol
2 years ago, I got a htc incredible and rooted it and went through about 20 roms before I finally stuck with cyanogen mod 7, which had everything I was looking for built in.
The main 2 things I want with this Gs3 is free wifi tether and ability to move apps to sd card.
I read a post about native tether and it looked like someone got it working on jelly bean? Not native tether but some kind of wifi tether.
Streve or something like that?
Uhg.. I am rambling, let me make this short and sweet.
1)Can I have wifi tether on jelly bean?
2)Can I have app to sd on galaxy s3?
3)Can I have call recording?
I am stock 4.1.1 with root right now but am willing to go with a custom ROM to get these features... Don't care if its 4.1.1 or 4.0.4 as long as I can get these working. #3 isn't too important.
Please point me to where I need to be if these things or part of these things are possible?
I would like to be as stable as possible.
I'm not the type to be changing roms all the time.
Also, what is the way to go if I need a custom ROM and want to get my apps back and such? Without having to set them all up again, if thats possible?
I consider myself a noob again since so much has changed since my htc incredible.
Thanks so much and I apologize if I piss anybody off with this post. I just don't have the time or energy to read so much info that is available on this site. Just thinking that someone that is familiar with all this would have a much easier time pointing me in the direction I need.
Happy holidays and be safe everybody.

Wifi tether you'll have to search for the right mod, apps to SD is a thing of the past on this phone, internal storage is just a folder in /data so you have ~12gb for whatever(apps, pics, vids, music etc) aside from your microsd. Call recording I think there's something for it but don't use it so searching teh googlez will be your best bet

Most of the roms will have abilites your looking for. Tether as stated is only a quick mod away as well. Now the fun part of skimming roms to find one that fits you. I run the peoples rom. Light theme, great battery life. Clean rom overall. Best thing to do read a couple, check last few posts to see recent issues (if any) flash and form an opinion. Everyones experience differs. Thanks to you both. Well yeah, I guess app to sd isn't needed anymore. I had only 8G on my incredible, even though I had all my unimportant apps on the sd, I never came close to filling up the internal memory.
I will check out The Peoples ROM. I did notice that JellyBomb topic said something like "totally bug free" or something like that.. Any opinion on JellyBomb?
Oh and the last concern I had was restoring my apps and data so I don't have to set them up each ROM change? Should I purchase Titanium Backup?
Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again

TB is definetly the way to go. You can flash the custom recovery, root the device, then back up your apps before flashing any ROMs.
The only two roms i know of (and could find after a quick peruse through the dev sections) that have call recording are Team Sonics (via a flash-able zip) and Blazer rom (baked in).
Personally i run the latest Blazer JB rom, great battery life, smooth operation, and a stripped down TW experience with all the major goodies and none of the bloatware. Great compromise between pure AOSP and Pure TW

1. I use Team Sonic's Free GS3 ROM, and it has WiFi tether included (and working, for me at least). It is accessed in the settings menu. It is a smooth ROM for me, and the install is customizable using the Aroma installer. A very cool way to set up the ROM during the flash process!
2. I believe Google changed the way it partitioned/formated a phone's internal memory, and that is giving problems to moving apps to sd cards. Unless you really download/install a large number of apps, the 11 or so gigs of internal storage that is free is plenty! I just use my sd card as a media storage (pics, music, etc). There are ways to go about moving apps to sd, but I'm not sure it's 100% reliable.
3. Can't help you on that one, sorry!
Whatever you decide (and since you have root), please make a nandroid backup of your current stock configuration! I use TWRP recovery, and it is a great touch-based recovery program. CWM is now touch-based too. Backup first before doing anything else, please!

Oh boy.. I know people are going to roll their eyes and think I am a freakin idiot.. I prolly am.
I just purchased titanium backup pro and want to make a backup of my stuffs so when I change a rom, I can restore.
Do I really need TB or will google restore my stuff when I log in?
If I do need TB, is there a vid from that qbking77 guy that explains how to do this? The vids I have watched from him are EXCELLENT and VERY easy to follow.
I opened TB and it is so complicated to me that I have no clue where to start.. I did find the option to store my backups on the sd card(made a new folder called"titanium backup")<-----should I have done this?
I searched google and found a vid on using TB and rom change and in the vid the guy goes to backup and selects "batch" but I cant find that on my version of TB..(latest version)... CRAP I just found it.. clicked the checkmark on top right and got that batch screen he had...(see how dumb I am?)
I think I want to just backup "user apps" with no system data, but in TB under "Backup all user apps" it says 0. System data says 228 but wont that interfere with a new rom?
OK, what I want to do is:
First) backup my apps that I have downloaded/purchased.
Second) Install my first rom... The Peoples Rom v3.05.
Third) Restore my backup from TB WITHOUT A HITCH.
Fourth) Try other roms.
Fifth) Restore TB backup WITHOUT A HITCH.
Can someone link me to the info I need(preferably videos because I am a visual learner)?
Or if what I am trying to do is easily accomplished,, explain step by step what I need to do?
I know search is my friend but when I search, I get overwhelmed. I have a boy with down syndrome and he takes most of my time so thats why I am trying to take the easier route.
Thanks for all your patience. It is much appreciated.
Also, feel free to kick me out of here if I am asking too much.. I can definitely understand that.

google restore will not restore app data. i will re-download you most recent batch of apps (i believe that's how it decides what to download, im not 100% sure on the logic behind what it does and does not download.) and stuff like wifi passwords and gmail settings, etc.
If you want to move your app-data (games, books, locations in books, movies, etc) or don't want to download stuff constantly, then you want TB. i use it extensively when testing out new roms so i am not constantly re-downloading my apps and what not.

Thank you. I have been reading the TB how to's. It says to backup my user apps and system data when changing roms...
But when I click on batch. It shows 0 for user apps.. System data shows 228 and User apps+system data shows 228..
Does this seem correct?
I guess I will backup user apps+system data and install a new rom and see what happens.. If it doesnt go well, I can restore my nandroid.
duh,, I messed up and unchecked apps in the filters thinking it was the "all" checkmark
now I have 80 user apps.
Just to make sure,,
I should backup user apps only and NOT system data because the system data might not be compatible with the new rom?
Thanks

Don't back up your system apps. Most ROMs come with their own set of system Apps and they don't necessarily play well with each other. you can back up your accounts, your user dictionary, etc......but usually I just back up the user apps. If there are any specific system apps you have that you want to take with you, I'd recommend converting them to user apps through titanium backup and restoring them that way.
The other option is to just dirty flash the roms, this way you don't have to worry about losing your apps/data, but YMMV.
You should get Rom toolbox pro. It has over 20 different apps combined. It's a very polished app, you should check that out for restoring your apps. For your flashoholic\noob needs.
Silly sheeps, S3's arnt for noobs.
Hey, A BIG THANKS to all of you that chimed in here.. I thought I would get flamed because of my stupidity but not one person scolded me.
I have finally flashed my first rom.
I backed up "user apps" only with TB
Then booted into clockworkmod recovery and wiped cache, delvik, and factory reset all right there.
Then installed zip from sd and everything went great.
upon signing in to my google account, most my apps came back, so I only had to restore 8 of them with TB.
One weird thing happened, I just installed a game last night called "Bike Race Free" and was really liking it but when google was d-loading and installing my apps back, that one came back with "this app is not compatible with your device" but TB restored it fine and it works great. I think I will post on The Peoples Rom thread about it. I was on an IRC channel and one guy said it "might be because the "build.prop" file might of been modified to make it think its a different device or something similar..."
Anyway, I feel comfortable now about flashing roms. It was easier than when I did it over 2 years ago on my Droid Inc.
Thanks again all.
Oh and I will look into that app you mentioned Brandonrz,, RomToolBox Pro. Thanks

Some apps arent JB compatible yet which is the most common reason ive see for apps not being compatible. Less common are DPI changes and resolution issues.
I second RomToolBox Pro, excellent app for all your rooting needs

[Q] Reasons to root Galaxy Note II?

Ive recently upgraded to the Note II . My last device was a rooted DHD. The only reason I had to root was the fact it never made it past 2.3 and I wanted the newer os', and I was quite pleased to run 4.1.2 and have all the new features such as Google Now, ect. NOW, that I have official 4.1.1 please tell me the advantages to rooting such a new device? :cyclops:
My main reason for rooting is security and privacy and then the use of a decent firewall: DroidWall or Avast. I deem it necessary on such device.

I have AVG Pro on my OFW is this in any way less secure?
Reason why I root is get rid of ads, install mods and few good apps that need root.

Backups and annoying adds removal are my main reasons.
Edit: to have all in 240 dpi , was also main reason for me, Note 2 really looks better in 240 compared to default 320.

What roms would you recommend? Also, would I have any troubles rooting or flashing anything since my model is actually SGH-I317M? Thanks.

Indeed, backup also and some file-sharing applications such as Samba.
Regarding Firewalls, I do like DroidWall (or as incorporated into Avast) for its customization.
Titanium Backup & Custom Roms
addaway --> browsing and apps without adds
droid wall --> stopping apps going online during 3g, safes maybe also energy
Mods (xplorer) --> use all apps in Multiwindow, use volume button for skipping song
Titanium Backup --> safe apps and delete some preinstalled apps
ES Explorer --> able to see every folder and delete for examples systemsounds
Light manager --> more options for the LED light
Antivirus is probably the least of your concerns. Just ROOT it and get custom ROMS. This is the GTN7100 section, you should check out the AT&T GN2 section for ROMS

Question about root and factory reset (noobish)

Hi guys. Do I really need a root on n2 ? I would not be using most of it features anyway. I was searching for good room all the time on my desire z... this is the thing with roms, that no rom is ever perfect.
so. If I care for slow motion video, all of camera featrures and overall quality of camera and experience, do I need to root anyway ? I am liking it very much as it is out of the box.
Another question. I am using ftp app and filezilla to copy files between the n2 and pc. But with filezilla I can enter any file on the phone outside in that 16gb internal memory space. (I am talkinga bout 5gb of system files).
Now I am worried that i could delete or move some files by accident in filezilla. Would factory reset help and restore everything on stock ?
Basically.
Do I need root, If i am a heavy camera user ?
Does factory reset restores internal 16gb storage, or to be more accurate, system files. (dont have sd card) and how to perform real out of the box like factory reset.
I have this phone for 2 days and I am loving it. My dream came true cheers and thanks for any tips.
You probably don't need root. I rooted mine but to be quite honest I don't make a lot of use of root features. The device is pretty cool without root.
I'd suggest that you leave it until you find that "one thing" that really needs root.
l rooted my Note 10.1 as well- Same applies

If your device doesn't have latest 4.1.2 rom then earliest update it rather than root, it is much needed.
Btw if you factory reset, you will lose all data on internal storage too.

For me, I need root.. I don't like the stock ROM, many ROM out there are awesome to use..
First time I got my note 2, I was excited and I thought stock rom was like the best and I thought other ROM are just bad..
I tried like 2 - 3 then I liked them a lot so I started switching between ROMs and yea.. Now, I can't really use the stock..
For you, if you really only use it for camera, you don't need to root..
However, some ROMs like Omega ROM or ARHD and many others, has impressive battery life, I got 9 hours of display time and got many features..
If you want to know, try it your self
Install custom recovery (TWRP) and discover ROMs safely
Yea factory reset deletes everything in your internal memory..
So I recommend an external SD Card

Thanks for answers. So I think I will not root for now but I might fallow developement topic for interesting concepts.
for now I am very happy with stock 4.1.2 and battery life is fantastic. Btw. Charger makes weird sounds when in outlet by itself... like if something was loose inside but its not because sound stops soon after disconnecting charger from wall outlet.. And pitch noise when charging but that I consider normal.
I am still unclear about factory reset. I know I will lose al my data from that 10gb available to use. My question is, will factory reset restore anything on that rest 5gb system hidden partition in case I will get a virus or accidentally delete something with ftp filezilla? Thats because whole 16gb can be explored via wifi ftp way.
ANyway. The device is stunning and its just 3rd day of discovering it secrets
Factory reset bring your device to state when you got out of box, that's simplest answer.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
This is why it's called factory reset
I don't think you need any ROM.I also have an un-rooted stock 4.1.2 Note 2 ,Nova Launcher some widgets with UCCW and Swiftkey are enough for me.Battery life is very good on 4.1.2 just the same as 4.1.1 ,I had both versions.I get about 5:30 hours of screen ON maximum brightness ,screen ON ALL the time ,playing Modern Combat 4 and heavy browsing and YouTube.Impressive.
OK thanks for answerws.
Can I root and keep stock firmware and have factory reset working ?
If official update comes out I will not be able to use ota update when rooted right ?
Also. How to improve battery stats ? I am getting about 5-6 screen on time. (which is giid anyway)
one more. How to debloat? I have retail device so only samsung useless chaton, samsung apps etc are on. I removed all updates for those etc and just disabled notifications. Oh also - I cant seem to find general topic about optimizing everything on n2. is there anything like that ?

Been holding off kk upgrade. Should I let it just go?

On my note 3,i know if 4.4 I will lost root.
My tablet is not rooted but I might like to to get Microsd access and defrost. If looks like if I upgrade, I can still aquire root
True or not, any reason not to?

It's like a new tablet performance and function wise. All of Samsung's apps have been refreshed and the browser is especially impressive. Multi Window and Pen Window now support the same apps meaning you can have apps open side-by-side or floating and resizable. Without any modifications I now have 35 apps available in Multi Window. On 4.4 you can also install Hancom Office, e-Meeting, Remote PC, and Side sync bringing the N10.1-2014 up to "Pro" level. People are reporting better battery life and shorter charging times also. I did a dirty flash using a ROM from a different region so I somehow kept the lock screen widgets (which should be gone) and lost Daynote (which should be there). My battery was funky at first; not charging overnight and draining way too quickly. The former fixed itself and the latter was fixed when I deleted my Exchange accounts, cleared app data, and rebuilt them. I think my battery life is better now; it's certainly no worse. I'm going to do a recovery and rebuild my N10.1-2014 (it takes about six hours ) once the 4.4 ROM for my region is out which should clear up any funkiness.
As for external SD, it is what it is. Apps can still use it (individually) for storage so you can keep big files there. Samsung's apps (My Files, Samsung Link, Gallery, Video, and Music) still have universal read/write access and can manipulate all external SD files. So with 4.4 there's some added manual administration and you have to come up with new ways of doing things but it's not the end of the world. And it's not going to change. So you have two choices - stay on 4.3 forever and miss out on a fantastic update or bite the bullet and root. After just four days using the update I can't imagine going back.

KitKat on this thing is a beast!! The original software with the note was a joke and I'm glad Samsung fixed everything with kitkat
KitKat looks good, but to me it made my external SD READ ONLY. I can't modify any file, not even copy from the internal to the external.

If you are rooted just install "Folder Mount" from play store, run it , it will fix your sd card issues.

Yes, Samsung My Files will work with ext SD but it doesn't allow you to rename filename extensions so you can rename a .apk to like .zip so you can bluetooth it across and then rename it back to .apk

Don't bother! I love Jellybean and I love being rooted...I have so many cool apps ...plus with TB I have frozen all the bloat and get like 14 hours out of my tab...Its super fast, no lag and no headaches with KK. I will never upgrade to KK.
I have everything the Pro series has ..have Milk Music ..etc...
