OK I'm really sorry but I've been searching for days (weeks actually) so forgive me if there is a thread that I can't find - and/or link to it for me if you wouldn't mind. (I get frustrated by people asking the same question over and over, as I'm sure you do too, I really am stuck as I am completely new to android and am still a little stuck in iOS mindset - i.e. can't seem to work thing out for myself lol)
This relates specifically to the SGNII hence it's post here and not in general android forum (where I've also searched)
I'm loosing patience waiting for a 32GB so I'm "considering" getting a 16 and 64GB card and rooting. I know I will have more than 16GB of apps (added up all the once I want/need) and really need a backup facility so......
When you root the SGNII - only to gain root access for modifying the external SD to take apps and, possibly, to use titanium backup:
1) Do you loose any stock functions/apps other than warranty, OTA updates, and automatic app updates?
2) Do ALL apps run ok from the external SD (eg top of the line games, Polaris office etc) - is there any slow down?
3) If, at a later point, I flash a later stock ROM (what would normally be an OTA update) release will it still find all the apps and their data on the SD card?
4) If an app is updated in the store is it easy to update it onto the SD when you know the update is available
I'm sorry if I'm asking the same question that others have asked but I've been searching for days. Many thanks for links or direct answers to these questions. I'd really love a 32GB or above and I'm giving it until the upcoming US release to see if this is a trigger for global release but there are already some pretty tasty deals in the 16GB format on contract here in the UK
Many thanks in advance for your help

Thank you so much for the reply, sorry if it was a simple question, pushing me more toward the 16gb now (I'd be saving a lot of money on my contract if I upgrade!). - I actually went into the store today to buy one, fate must have stopped me because they only had white in stock (I want grey) lol.
So if I root and use triangle away to reset counter I can still get OTA updates? - that's cool (I'm sure ill be flashing new roms before long anyway - used to love messing with the OS on my XDA exec back in the day - so this isn't too important, but nice to know)
Thank you for confirming apps will have no significant problems running form the SD (I know that things like widget apps need to be in the on-board memory)
I think I've understood correctly from reading around that SD mounted apps will not "automatically" update, again that doesn't bother me - I'm sure there are apps out there that can "watch" for new releases - time to do another search.
I'm not to scared about getting back from root should I have a problem now (I.e. factory reset) - thank you
One more question, if you don't mind:
I've been reading about directory bind quiet a lot over the past few weeks (trying to answer the above questions you answered in 2mins!) - is there a good app that you would recommend for directory binding? There's several on the store and, TBH, the reviews don't really help me make a decision. I did catch somewhere that there was a method to trick the phone into thinking the external SD was the Internal SD and vice versa - what's your views on that?
I think it's funny that rooting invalidates your warranty when even the samsung App Store has program's that require root!
Once again, thanks for the reply

Hi everybody, I just bought a HTC Desire from The Carphone Warehouse on the O2 network.
I've taken it home, inserted my simcard, turned it on and put it on charge. I've flicked through the little introduction screens and then connected to my home WiFi.
I have been reading this and other forums for a while. I want to now root the phone and install a custom ROM.
Before I download any apps or do anything should I first root the phone as soon as possible and install the custom ROM of my choice?
The phone came with a 4GB memory card. I of course want to upgrade this to a bigger card. Should I buy and insert the new memory card before rooting and installing a ROM as I have read about people having problems with installing new memory cards.
Removing the back of the phone scared the life out of me. I thought it was going to snap. I don't fancy doing that too often!
Sorry about the long winded thread but any help would be appreciated.
Personally, if this is your first Android phone, I think you ought to just use it for a couple of weeks, to get familiar with it. There is no point in installing custom ROMs right away before you know what the standard software can or can't do, as you will not have anything to compare the new ROM to.
Many ROMs have issues/bugs, and you would do well to spend a couple of weeks reading up on the forums here, to gain an understanding of what rooting entails, and what you can expect from different ROMs. It is likely you will end up flashing multiple ROMs before settling on one you are happy with, so why not just enjoy your phone for a bit first? Trust me, flashing can become addictive, and you can often end up with a phone that has a non-working feature - which can be frustrating, as well as time consuming.
Also, rooting is very safe now, but regularly new problems are discovered - for instance the recent SLCD brick issue. If you don't know what that is then you need to do more reading. Trust me, you will save yourself lots of hassle in the long run - panicking over a £400 phone that won't boot up, not knowing whether you've broken it permanently, is not a nice feeling.
I'm not trying to put you off at all - rooting is the best thing I've done with my Desire (and my Dream before that), and I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in unleasing the full power of their phone. But do your research thoroughly first, then ask questions.
In reply to the questions you have asked:
Before I download any apps or do anything should I first root the phone as soon as possible and install the custom ROM of my choice?
If you're going to root then you have to wipe the phone as part of the process, therefore losing any apps you've installed. You would have to then reinstall them. Whether you root now or later, you will still have to install your apps. Once the phone is rooted, you can backup your apps when moving from ROM to ROM - Titanium Backup is good.
Should I buy and insert the new memory card before rooting and installing a ROM as I have read about people having problems with installing new memory cards.
Up to you. If you have the money now then I would go ahead and get the SD card you want now. Saves transferring stuff later on.
When you have any questions feel free to post here in the Q&A section and there will be people more than happy to help you out
Welcome to the world of Android!
EDIT: I have just re-read your post, and realised you said you have been reading the forums for a couple of weeks - I didn't mean to sound patronising at all when I recommended more research. Knowledge is power!
Hi All,
2 quick questions. thanks in advance for any help
1) let's say i wanted to upgrade to a bigger sd card for more storage, could i just copy over everything to the new sd card and reboot the phone and all is well and good, even with android 2.2's built in apps2sd? or would any of my apps that are installed to sd get messed up?
2) i haven't yet rooted my g2 but i'm going to soon. i rooted my g1 in the past. i've been reading some of the guides and whatnot to get ready, but one thing i was concerned about is being able to un-root completely to stock in case i ever need to do a warranty thing. do i actually have to back up anything, or can i just download the stock image like alot of tutorials seem to say? will it all be exactly the same after going thru the process of unrooting?
thanks!
Dave
I have the same question with the SD card.
As far as the second question goes I don't think you have to worry about it to much. Most t mobile staff are not anal about it. Just don't have it booting up to cm lol

First off, yep, I used the search but nothing did quite match the question I have...
Now, one of the main reasons I want to root my phone for, is, that I don't have (even nearly) enough space for the apps I want to use.
1. I saw a ROM floating around here which is enabling the complete installation of applications to the sd card, is this possible with every ROM or just with this specific one?
And:
2 .On the current stock ROM there already is an App2SD function, but I haven't got enough space anyway, does this improve with root access?
The second reason I want to root my Desire is, that I'd like to have 2.3 instead of 2.2, because of some features that were added.
One, actually minor but anyway, more reason for rooting for me is, that I can have a different theme (I'm getting bored of the stock one...)
3. Are this and the first one enough reasons to root your phone? Is it worth it?
Then, some more general questions about rooting:
4. I saw a few tutorials out there, which are "noob proved", is it really that simple? (I'm not complete idiot in terms of technical things, but I haven't got much expirience with android...)
5. I also saw that it is possible to "brick" your device, does this just happen when you do something completly wrong, or is it just random? How "high" is the chance of bricking your device?
6. After you rooted your device, can you "switch" ROMs quite easily or is it a kind of harder process each time?
7. Im not soo familiar with android, as I mentioned before, so, does android write the SMS and so on to the SIM card or are they saved internal? Are they getting lost while rooting?
And now over to some more personal questions:
8. What application or advantage did you root your phone for?
9. Which root apps are really making it worth rooting?
I'd be really thankfull if you could help me with this, and I appreciate each answer!
Best regards
P.S.: Sorry for my kinda bad english, but I'm not quite often using it....
1. You are talking about a feature named a2sd. If a rom supports it, it will be listed in its feature list. To use it, you have to follow the given instructions for partitioning sd card for a2sd in the roms corresponding thread.
2. That's not a2sd, it's the "froyo-style app2sd". The difference is, with the froyo one you can only move the application to sd card if the developer programmed the app for it. With a2sd, all apps you install will be automatically moved to a special partition on your sd card, namely sd-ext. You don't have and must not do anything.
You can already download gingerbread from htcdev.com:
http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads
3. Rooting gives you many advantages. Most important things are you can backup your apps/settings and your rom, and you can flash custom roms.
4. Of course they are. That's why they named like this.
5. If you follow all guides carefully and don't do something silly, imho the chance the phone bricks is not higher than an untouched stops working.
6. It's very easy. You do it from recovery, where you can backup your previous rom.
7. Yep, but you have to it with an extra program like sms backup & restore:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result
8. Flash custom roms, backup and restore apps/rom -> better and so awesome desire experience.
9. Most important one is imho titanium backup:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&feature=search_result
i recently rooted and then unrooted and then rooted and s-off my desire trust me reading the instructions makes its sound more difficult than it is. just read carefully dont take shortcuts and ull be ok.
i rooted as i ran low on space also i like the fact i can delete system apps as i dnt use them.
you can use themes.
there are roms with data2sd or data2whatever, better than app2sd.
just read thru ask some questions of people.they will help u out. boobkmark the pages u want to use i always forget and then can never find the advice again!!!
once ur rooted used unrevoked for that. you can swap roms like there ur socks!! i and many others on here im sure swapped roms hourly let alone daily , u need to see which one fits u the best.
this is just what i no from my very limited experience others on here are much more in the know!
good luck
Use this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
If you follow it exactly you should not brick your phone
Switching roms is easy as long as you read the requirements for each rom, which are usually found within the first two posts on the rom thread
If you use cyanogenmod rom you can use the s2e app from market to move apps to your sd card, imho this is a very easy way to implement app2sd, I'm using this, I have heaps of apps installed and still have plenty of space left

Thank you very much for the answers!
I downloaded all of the files needed and backed up SMS and contact information and tomorrow I'll root my phone (got more time and patience....).
Just one more quick question: I bought my phone unbranded (on Amazon), so I don't need to make a "gold card", am I right?

You are right. But if I were you, I would made one even so, just in case.
Hi!
I want to revert to JB 4.3 from KK 4.4.2. Partly because of battery life, RAM use but also because I'm using an external SD card - which basically is pointless from 4.4. on as I've understood... Yes, I can store media files there, but I cannot move 3rd party apps from my internal storage (which I want to keep "clean"); e.g. I cannot move a Kindle book from the internal storage and on to the external SD card.
Also, I've noticed that when I take a picture it is stored on my SD card as I've chosen in the options, but if I edit it the edited version is saved on the internal storage... and uses precious space there. And the only program I can use to relocate it to where it belongs is FileCommander, which isn't the file manager of my choice, to put it that way...
The reason I chose this phone rather than i.e. an iPhone 32GB was, apart from it's (at least supposed to be ) waterproof, is (or rather was, at the moment) the option of using an external SD card to augment the somewhat abysmal storage capacity of 16 GB. With Google's new policy that only 1st party apps can write to it, the point of having an SD card becomes quite debatable...
So, basically - I want to go from Sony KitKat 4.4.2 back to Sony JellyBean 4.3 - nothing more.
And then, the questions I need to ask - and hopefully receive answers to. Perhaps people in the Nordic countries - and specifically Norway are best suited to help me.
1) I was thinking of simply using the approach in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNE3eZnlHIw
Which is basically using an official Sony 4.3 flash and use that and flashtool to overwrite 4.4.2 on the phone. ...or did I miss something?
I've noticed that I do not have any Developer options under my settings, but it seems that USB debugging is on by default.
a) Will this require that I unlock the bootloader (and perhaps void my warranty - living in Norway)? I can do so (unlock bootloader says "yes").
b) Should I root the device - do I need to back up the TA partition? Also because of potential warranty issues... I cannot understand why, as the phone had JB 4.3 when I got it anyway...
2) Is this 4.3 ftf usable for me, living in Norway? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2657610
I've noticed that some have expressed a little irritation since this ROM is in Chinese... Which I of course can't use. Is this usable anyway? Or are there any other more or less official ROMs I can download - I'd be happy enough even if from Sony itself?
I think that's all - at least for now. Hope some guru out there is able to help me.
You can use any ftf (Z1 compact firmware of course), but I don't recommend the one you linked as it's a chinese firmware. Check here for firmwares: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2631291
You don't need root or an unlocked bootloader to flash stock firmwares.
As for developer options, go to Settings => 'About phone' and press 7 times on 'Android Build'. This will unlock the Developer options in Settings.

OK, perhaps this is better then? I see that's older than the Chinese ROM....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2633924
This and the Chinese ROM mentioned in my OP are the only I can think of "match" my phone, as the other two appear to be UK and Germany specific, respectively...? Remember, I was thinking of going from KitKat back to Jelly Bean...
That is from 14.3.A.0.757 to 14.2.A.1.142 (or maybe I have to settle for 14.2.A.1.114).
Also, if any one has good arguments for keeping KitKat or perhaps know of work-arounds for my main issues (file management and OS and app RAM usage), I'm all ears.
As I said you can use any firmware. The UK and german are not specific for that country, they just have a different customization. For example the UK version has the 4G icon and the option to enable national roaming. The pre-installed apps are also not the same.
I don't know any work-arounds as I've not experienced any problems since I upgraded to KitKat. There is a fix though for the SD card but it requires root.

OK, wasn't thinking of going there originally, but JUST IN CASE I want to try that... Could you give me a pointer as to the procedure? That would be most helpful.
EDIT: Is it about rooting "only" (will probably be challenging enough...), and then installing this one: "SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD" ?
(forum rules prevent me from using an external link it seems, sorry)
Yes, that's the fix I was talking about. I'm not using it because I didn't face any problems yet with KitKat's SD policy.
Sorry, but one thing remains somewhat unclear for me.
If I decide to stick to KitKat, is it enough if I root the phone (and keep the stock installed 757 OS) and then install the SD Card KitKat fix? Or do I also have to unlock the bootloader?
I'd be very happy if I don't have to do the latter, I must admit... I don't like the idea if I screw up totally while unlocking the bootloader and void my warranty and DRM rights, as it seems to me now that I've read a bit about this that unlocking the bootloader is what can really cause trouble... If I've understood everything correct.
Bootloader unlock is only required if you want to use custom kernels.

Yes, you can just do the rooting part. I recommend to upgrade to the latest KitKat firmware after rooting ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2688933 )

Titanuim backup is a great way to uninstall system apps and even back them up. Customize youre stock rom by xposed Installer(repo.xposed.info/module/de.robv.android.xposed.installer put www. infront of the repo)(i cant post links yet.)
Roms are basicly customized OS on Android. As these give you greater features themes and a fresh looking phone(in my opion)
Try watching tutorials as it is kinda hard and with loads of steps.
as for putting apps on sd cards there is no 'official' way of doing it the feature is availble on android 4.2.x i think and on custom roms.
Try watching videos and tutorials about root and its gains.
soz my english isnt great i am from netherlands
