[Q] No automatic switch between WiFi and 3G - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
hard to describe my problem. Normally WiFi as well as 3G is turned on. At home the phone is using WiFi but when I leave home and do not have WiFi anymore it often does not automatically switch to 3G. I still have coverage indicated by the status bars but the H is missing. As a workaround to bring 3G back I can either switch between 3G and 2G or go into Airplane mode and back.
However, both solutions do not satisfy me. I want to understand why this does not happen automatically.
Thanks

Stock ROM? Rooted? Please answer these questions before posting a question...

I installed the unofficial CM9 and already downgraded from 3.35.20.10 radio to 3.35.19.25. Without success.
Might it be related to HTC Smartsync powersave issue, though HTC Wildfire Buzz should normally not be affected?

SmartSync is different.
Why didn't you have success when downgrading the radio?

No success in the sense that the problem still persists. Any ideas what I should try out?
I should maybe try out a different ROM. Maybe it's a problem with my operator.

Try a different ROM

I could resolve it by reducing the number of APNs to one.

Can't turn Desire on from standby

Hey.
I have a big problem with my desire. The phone is fully working, but when it goes into standby, and I try to turn it on using the "power button" at the top, the keys light up, but nothing comes on the screen It just doesn't turn on again.
Any ideas? Thanks!
In the general section on the desire forum there is a topic related to defective proximity sensor. i,m a new forum-user so i can't make a link yet
Thanks for the help so far, but couldn't find anything that solved my problem :/ Have to restart the phone every time it goes into standby
Like many others, I am also experiencing this standby-of-death (SOD) problem: the lights in the buttons under the screen turn on, but the screen itself stays black. I have found out that it has to do with switching from 3G to 2G networks: the problem occurs after I have been at places where there is no 3G signal, but only 2G. For example, after a car trip or when going into the basement.
A workaround for this problem, is to type the code *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer. You will then end up in a hidden menu. By choosing "Phone information" (first item) and then scrolling down in the next screen, you can change the "Preferred network type". By default, it was set to "WCDMA preferred" on my phone. After I changed this setting to "WCDMA only" (so, 3G only), I have not seen the SOD issue anymore (for 4 weeks now, before it happened almost daily).
A disadvantage of this workaround is that the phone will never use 2G anymore. So, when you are at a place where there is no 3G signal, you will be disconnected (i.e. you cannot receive phone calls). As an alternative, I have now reverted the setting to the original value ("WCDMA preferred") and I have installed an older radio image (version 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2), which is considered to be more stable by many people. I'll test and see whether the problem reoccurs. If the problem stays away, it is apparently a software (radio image) issue. If not, it must be a hardware issue.
Anyway, if anyone has additional information about the root cause of this standby issue, please let me know!

OMG I love you!
Seriously this has been doing my head in for weeks! I have posted a couple of times in this forum. First time, constantly remvoing and replacing the battery left me with a bricked phone. HTC revived it under warranty but after a week I got sick of Sense (and the poor battery life) and tried rooting again (tried Redux and CM7) but the problem came back. Makes sense because it works fine around Bristol (loads of 3G) but constantly SODs in Bournemouth (flicks between 2G and 3G at my desk). Also, just had data off for a few hours and didn't get SOD once.
I am not up on the lingo yet as I am fairly new to rooting but running Baseband version 32.49.00.32H_5.11.05.27. Is this the radio?
Please keep me posted on the older radio version. Shouldn't need a long test period, just need to go from a known 3G area to a known 2G area while locked.

Yes it is the radio.
I have got GingerVillain (Based on CM) and I use the Power Control widget to switch between 2G and 3G. You can customise the widget (just add it to a screen) to get this feature.
I haven't got any 3G around my house so I don't need to activate it all the time .
Yeah Redux has a similar thing so I will use that until a proper solution is found.
Small update: enabling 2G only didn't fix the issue (I think 3G only is okay) so perhaps the issue is with 2G rather than switching between the two.
Instead I am using an app called "3G Data Only!" so that 2G can still be used for calls but not data, working great so far.
I have tied the latest Radio (32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23) and the problem does not go away.
How come this problem doesn't occur to (many) others? Could it be related to your network provider? Maybe you could change the SIM with another, from another network, and see what happens. Also, you could make use of the phone warranty - if it's still covered by it.

On o2 (in UK) right now, will try out another sim later. As for warranty, never had any issues on non-root Froyo Sense so can't do anything.

Try to change the network, say, from O2 to 3 or Vodafone. If your Desire is branded, there is a free way to unlock it - just look for Desire SIM-Unlock utility in the forum, by sieempi
Been running radio 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2 for a couple of days now and the issue seems to have gone away.

I also have this SOD issue with the older radio ROM versions, so installing an older version is not a solution.

Great, I'll try this application! Would be very nice if that fixes the problem without disabling 2G phone calls. I never use 2G for data (too slow anyway), but I would like to be able to still make phone calls when out of range of 3G cells.

It might be, I don't know. I'm using a Telfort SIM, connected via the KPN network (Netherlands).
3G data only works a treat for that, you can make calls.
Found with the old radio that it is a lot more stable than the new radio but not 100% perfect. Where I work I only have 2G and it would SOD all the time but now it doesn't. However on a journey I make with intermittent 2G/3G I did get a SOD.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
3G Data Only doesn't work well enough. The SOD issue does occur less frequently, but the phone still hangs sporadically. So, if have disabled 2G completely again.
You should try Insertcoin. I haven't had this issue since I started using IC v32 a2sd.
Hi there. So i get the same thing on mine. I thought I should report my experience.
Had it over a year old then all of a sudden it started acting like this
heres what i tried
Factory reset, rooted it twice, boot with no sim, no SD card, dismantled it via instructions I found on an android forum to check for loose connections, gave it to a friend who ran some different roms, overclocked it, underclocked it. Its currently on the Oxygen rom, no difference. I tried the secret menu from page one of the comments. I tried living with leaving the screen on for 30 mins..but its so impractical
I should add that if i leave it for say a couple of hours, the damn thing comes on just fine. Its only from being on, to off, then back on..
I think its hardware related, maybe something to do with the power being held back for the screen or something. All i can say is that its really doing my tits in and i'm currently using my old phone which is functional but not as fun.
What can i do next...send to HTC, i'm out of warranty but their repair centre can still have a look, or buy a faulty phone off ebay and harvest some parts...
I dont want to give up on it, because apart from this the phone works fine.
guys i had this problem too, when i force to use 3G only everything works perfect but in area with no 3G signal your phone become useless cuz you are out of network, i also had a self-rebboting problem and i sent my lovely desire to htc repair center, they replace mobo and now i am waiting to receive my phone back and i will test this issue, if everything will works correctly in 3g/gsm etc you guys need to do the same and sent your phone to repair,

WiFi connection kills mobile network

I'm having an issue that happens about 50% of the time. When in a WiFi zone and connected to a router, quite often the mobile network will lose connection so I cannot make calls or send texts. None of the mobile bars are illuminated and there appears to be a little "x" above them. Leaving the WiFi zone disconnects from the router, but the mobile network still does not come back.
I have to reboot the phone before it picks up the mobile network again. It's really frustrating because without checking my phone, I never know whether it has mobile network connection or not (when i'm in a WiFi area such as work). I know the area i'm in has mobile connection, but WiFi just seems to kill it.
This is happening on the stock HTC ROM and the latest Oxygen ROM that I flashed to. Is this a known big or any tips/tricks?
Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > press Menu, select Advanced, and check your Wi-Fi Sleep policy settings.
maybe you have an old radio? i would suggest that you try to flash another radio to see if it solves your problem. again, just a suggestion!!!

Hmmm, I did not know about that. I'm not sure it'll fix the issue, but the WiFi turning off an on did somewhat bug me, so cheers for showing me that setting anyway

Well, I don't know what my stock radio was, but when I flashed to Oxygen I tried the one the dev recommended. Perhaps i'll try another.
Would 3 Mobile be really annoyed if I took the phone in for help and it was flashed to a custom ROM?

You could also try a modified kernel and as suggested above, a different radio version as this can help with issues related to Wi-Fi reception, GPS signal strength, and battery life.
If you purchased the mobile from 3 Mobile, then they may suggest that your warranty is void as you have 'hacked' it. You can always flash back to stock ROM and then check if the same issue persists. If not, then go back to a custom ROM, try different radio versions and some may work better as it can depend on your network/area, and if still not resolved, try flashing a compatible modified Kernel from the Desire Android Development section of the forum.
I'm using Leedroid 2.3b with RIL optimised for 5.11.05.27, and I notice weak signal with WiFi, it is present, but WiFi bars change all the time, among other symptoms similar to those he has described. The other day I went out of range of WiFi network, but the phone hasn't switched to mobile network, but instead the WiFi icon remained and there of course was no connection. Would you define this as an ROM or radio issue? Is there any sense in changing the radio to other when the ROM developer stated this one is the best?
A few days ago I flashed the newest radio (I was using batt+ up to that moment) because I experienced echo during calls. Now the echo is gone, but this happens.

I think it could be ROM or Radio related... I was not aware that the associated RIL was to be flashed also although I know it is always recommened as it can provide an important part in handling the communication between the Radio and the Kernel.
Have you tried without the RIL and just the radio alone? Try that and see if it improves the situation.
I downloaded and flashed RIL for this radio. It shouldn't make any difference though since this RIL is supposed to be in the ROM already. :s
This radio is also downloaded OTA from our provider. I checked my sister's Desire, she has the same radio on her stock Desire (i.e. it was downloaded OTA).

Is there any good advice on what Radios work well and what they excel at? I see quite a lot posted, but no hard information on what works best
What I would love is one that actually picks up mobile signal. Where I live, we get very poor reception, however, usually 1 bar is possible. My Desire never picks up anything whereas my old N95 8gb used to get 1 bar as does my brothers phone.
It's good enough for texts at least. Any advice on radios then?

wifi problem 2.3.3

I have a problem with wifi after I put update on 2.3.3
whether it can solve this problem with wifi.
I always shoot and it turns the wifi network.
be a good wifi network signal then disappears
Same problem here
This is a very serious problem. Get ur act together HTC, this is just unacceptable!
Are you rooted? HTC raised the signal strength at which the connection would be dropped, there is a fix if you are rooted, otheewise you are stucm and will have to wait for HTC to correct this.

same issue, though htc say that its a "new feature" to provide a seamless mobile broadband experience by automatically chosing the strongest signal. whatever you say htc
i just disable mobile data at home, so it cant jump back to 3g and stays on wifi. the annoying thing with this is that i forget to enable mobile data when leaving the house.
i hope they sort it out, and that this new feature isn't rolled out across their other products
I am having the same problem. At work, my wifi connection is weak, but was always functional. Now, I cannot connect to my work wifi. On top of that, my battery drains twice as fast on my phone, and I'm thinking that it's due to the phone always scanning and trying to connect to the wifi signal. If it's true that HTC changed the level at which the wifi signal is dropped, this was a terrible decision.

I think this may answer/point to the problem I'm having since installing the Gingerbread RUU. I use the quick settings app from the market and pre-gingerbread it used to switch between wi-fi/mobile pretty seemlessly, turning off the unused option. Now if there's no wi-fi connection that option seems to stay on (probably searching) while it's connected to mobile data. As above, my battery is draining like a sieve.

Same problem for me with Original Rom.
so i tried the Revoloution HD 5.1.4 and same problem again!
Hi guys until HTC release an OTA fix (that's if they do) the only way to resolve this is to root and then try some different ROM and radio combinations until you find one that works for you.
I find the ROM and radio from my signature work really well on WiFi but if you are going to do this make sure and root, gain S-OFF and ENG S-OFF. Also make sure you have the correct RIL for the ROM and radio that you are using
There are lots of threads on the dev section that guide you through this.
Wifi connecting
I have a similar problem with wifi connection. Only it doesn't disconnect during a connection but when establishing a wifi connection it takes much longer than it used to on Froyo. Anyone else noticed this?
i have problem too with wifi
I really hope htc has stopped the updates and resumes with a new build with the wifi problem fixed
The issue is with the Gingerbread Sense ROMs.

WiFi problems with routers
Hi there,
Same problem here. Both my WiFi router and phone say signal and reception quality are perfect and connection it stable, but data won't flow.
I'm having this problem with my Speedtouch (WEP key) router at home, whereas a Sitecom router at the office works fine (WPA etc. key).
Tried some work arounds, without success
Regards
***EDIT***
I can add that it has nothing to do with the reported threshold of -88dB signal strength. As I checked that with the *#*#4636#*#* option and both higher and lower values of the WiFi reception don't make any difference. The problem persists.
***EDIT v2***
The suggestion posted elsewhere to change from WEP to WPA didn't work out either
***EDIT v3***
Reverted back to ARHD 3.7 and WiFi is running fine again .
Hope some fix will be found soon!
Regards,
Is there any solution. I am trying to downgrade the radio but no chance.
If I use LeeDroid or Revolution will this same problem be there?

[Q] Problem with 3G, is my desire broken?

I have a specific problem with 3g conection in two manners:
with sense rom (any sense) the 3g work well, but when my phone enter in deep sleep and later unlock normal, the 3g conection get los (3g/h letters disappear) and a few second later the 3g come back and work very well except when enter in deep sleep and unlock again
with any other type of rom like CM is the same issue but the conection get lost ramdonly and when is stable and i request data conection (like enter in the store and start to load images) the conection lost, some time the conection come some late...
I use the lasted Radio(5.11.05.23), the stock radio(5.11.05.27) and to much types of ril and get ever the same problem...
My carries is DIGITEL from venezuela, Operator Code: 734-02... and idk how solve this, please help, my desire only have a week with me
Today i test all radios and still getting the same result... nobody can help?
Doubt it's a problem with your phone, probably an issue with your operator and the coverage you're getting where you live. Try a different SIM and see if you still get the same problem.

[CM10] loosing data connection until reboot

Hi,
Usually i have wifi enabled permanently, as i have coverage at home, university and t-mobile hotspots. But my nexus sometimes does not get a working data connection if i disable wifi or come back from flight mode. Icon shows reception and 3G/H/H+ but stays grey. I can't access any internet services like mail,http...
If i reboot the device, everything is fine.
Any ideas ?
Latest (-3days behind max) CM10 with stock kernel, XXLF1 baseband, tmobile germany
P.s.: tried to search with google, found nothing. Currently the nexus is my only internet-capable device, so i am sorry if repost...

Beamed from my Grouper.
Same issue here. Get random signal losses and afterwards no data until reboot. I've experienced this with other Roms as well. Toggling the airplane mode sometimes help for data recovering.
Try setting your minimum CPU above 500 Mhz...
How can that change the signal issues?
Maybe toggling wifi helps (sometimes)

I have exactly the same problem on galaxy s. The status bar shows mobile network connection, but the symbol stays grey, and connection is not there. Reboot is the only safe way to solve that. Sometimes toggling airplane mode helps, last time toggling wifi helped.
Changing APN seems to be helpful. Someone that looks good with the current provider.
almost same issue for me...
but there is some weird difference...
I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus latest radio, consistent RIL and latest CM10.
I lost data suddenly while browsing.
I can see blue signal with 3G, start browse and it change to H/H+. No problem until now but, when data returns to 3G, all further requests stay "pending" for a while (phone call is not working in this state!!!!). after a minute.... CRASH, all signal lost. Something like a reset.
even toggling data does not work... I simply have to wait that the phone decides to work again.
I'm from Italy, carrier is Vodafone. Someone with some hint?
thanks!

Because on earlier builds of some AOSP ROMs, the radio had a tendency to go to sleep and not wake up when the frequency dropped too low. The common fix at the time was to use a higher number for the minimum frequency...
Read you must...
I was looking up the answers to this same problem. When I'm staying still my internet is fine but when I'm driving down the road I lose signal. I did a google search for "cm10 losing data connection". This is a "normal problem" it is caused from changing between 3g and LTE 4g. I'm still looking up solutions to this problem.
