Phantom Voicemails? Missed calls due to phone not ringing? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have the SGS2 (epic touch 4g) on sprint and have had the issue tooooooo many times were i get phantom voicemails and some times my phone wont rign at all or it wont start to ring till the 4th ring then by then most people hang up . I use my phone heavily for work and a miss call can be loss of $ revenue.. These issues happen even when i have full bars of reception. A friend of mine has the SGS3 also on sprint and is having the same issue ..
I want to get the note 2 for many reasons but just cannot have this issue . Dont know if this is happening on all samsung phones but it didnt happen on my epic 4g.. or if this is a Carrier issue (sprint).
is anyone having these issue's with the note 2?

I had this happen to me tonight. I had 4 bars of service and my phone said I had a new voice mail. I checked it and it was from 2 seconds ago. No ring no missed call. I think it has something to do with the time in between cell tower pings. I wish I knew how to Be shorten this time. On another phone I had it was set to 7 seconds and some calls would go to voice mail befire thw phone even knew I had a call. I shortened it to like 4 seconds and never had the problem again. I think it was something to do with saving battery life with the slower ping times. I wish I knew the code to change mine on my At&t Note II.

Keep missing calls on my Pro2

Hey, I bought my touch pro2 2 months ago and i keep missing calls from time to time. The phone is next to me on the table, i have full signal and i just missed 2 calls And it happens from time to time buts enough to bother. For 2 months i missed about 15 calls. I'm using the original ROM from HTC with WM6.5. Any suggestions?!
Are you on AT&T? If so, I've seen the same thing and it's probably an AT&T network issue rather than a phone problem.
Occasionally, the same thing happens to me, and it hasn't been just on the Tilt2. It looks like when there's too much traffic on the network, calls get sent immediately to voicemail without the phone even ringing.
We're (me and lots of friends) having the same problem with T-Mobile for the last few weeks. I think it might be related to excessive use of 3G in the network.
No, guys. I use unbranded phone, im from Bulgaria. Strangly I've used Nokia 5800 for 6-7 months and never ever had that problem. My sister now uses the phone and never happened either. I looked in the settings of the phone and now I'm testing whether the problem will be solved if i choose the network and tha band manualy, not in automatic mode. So far so good but I''ll post the result after 2 or 3 days because the problem occurs from time to time.
Well after i set the band and network manualy (not in automatic mode as default) I haven't missed a single call. So I think this is a possible solution for now.

Missing Calls Frequently

So, I am curious if anyone else has this issue. I have 3 EVO's (all launch day) and 3 Heros (bought at the same time as the EVO's). All Heros are rooted and running Fresh Toast Rom. One EVO (mine) is running EvolutionX (Froyo). The other 2 Evo's are stock, non rooted.
All phones are occasionally missing calls. They do not even show in the call log. I have tested it. I called my phone (which was 2 inches from me) from my office and nothing. It just rings until it goes to voice mail, but the EVO does not ring at all. This happens on all the phones. Outbound calls work fine on the phone when this happens, though. I can call a landline and it goes through, but can not receive calls. It lasts about 5-30 minutes.
Any ideas?

I am in South Florida, one of Sprints strongest areas. I always have at least 3 bars of service. So it is definitely not a low service.
the thing is, it only happens every now and then and in random places. It is not like it only does not work in my house or office. I have been all over town and it happen in random places. It happens on all the phones at the same time.........could be a by product of sprint upgrading in the area?

missed calls, phone never rings

So my wife's captivate glide seems to have this problem:
- her glide (everything is stock) often never rings when someone calls her. No missed call notification, just a voicemail if the person decides to leave one.
-yesterday at home I called her phone from both my cell (motorola Atrix, HSDPA) and landline...no ring. Immediately afterwards from my landline to my Atrix, phone rings. Signal strength is around -70dBm for both the Glide and Atrix. I turned on airplane mode on the glide and then off. Called again from our landline and the phone rings on the glide.
Is it the cell tower? phone?
First thing - is the ringer volume on?
ringer volume is on...the glide was in front of me while I was dialing it from our landline or from my Atrix. The glide did not pop up the incoming call screen or ring until I turned on/off airplane mode, which is not a suitable workaround.
cell signal strength from my atrix shows -83 to -91 dBm. cell tower is ~488m away (using the open signal app)
I get this too sometimes.
Could never figure out why if it's hardware or software.
Anyone else have this issue?
I don't have this issue but I never receive calls and when I do it rings
-sent from my insanely awesome captivate glide-
my dads phone (a basic nokia on at&t) does this on occasion the phone has to be rebooted & it works fine. it happens after he goes to their summer home (300 miles away & in a rural area w/ LOTS of at&t dead spots). it does appear to be a tower/roaming type thing.

I've summed this up as an AT&T issue. Have been with them since the Cingular days and every phone I've ever had with them has exhibited this behavior. Making the switch to T-Mobile now that I can get an unlimited everything plan for $60/month

Thing is for when I did my test, my phone (Atrix) got the incoming call from our landline and my wife's phone (Glide) did not. Both have the same band support, maybe the Glide was on a different band?
My wife's phone has the same problem!
My wife's phone has the same problem! She complains about it all the time, and I have no idea what to do. Everything is stock.
It regularly doesn't ring. Like more than twice chunks of time a week.
I do notice that the Glide goes from HSPA to UMTS to HSDPA (in Status->Mobile Network Type) when I enable and then disable airplane mode. The Atrix stays on HSPA when I enable and then disable airplane mode.
I think when the Glide was not receiving calls it was in UMTS. Atrix was in HSPA.
I know someone else with a Blackberry on AT&T that has this problem sometimes. My Glide on AT&T had this problem the other day. I think it's a network thing.
At least if you use Google Voice for voicemails you will always get an e-mail that you missed a call even when the phone doesn't even show a missed call and the caller doesn't leave a voicemail.
Can any of you follow up on this? Did you ever get the problem solved? Did switching phones or SIMs help?
I'm collecting info on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779654 so we can assess the extent of this issue.
Not just an AT&T problem, it happens to me on Rogers in Canada. It happened to me just earlier today.
Mine has periods of time where it will do this, maybe an afternoon or a full day, then it goes away. Not often maybe once every couple of months. I suspect it is the carrier.

I had the same problem and for me, I found that "viper" program is causing it... It takes hold of the phone functionality and prevents the android phone app from triggering the ring and lighting the screen ... I unistalled it and every thing is back to noramal :good:
Me and the Mrs have the same problem all the time. There is no telling how many calls we miss.

I'm with Lookin4Troubleon this one and think this is an AT&T issue (who I have also been with since Cingular).
New Motorola Atrix HD, working fine, left on a desk in a well serviced area having never left range of the tower to which it is connected. After a period of time although the phone shows full bars and a 4G connection, when a call is dialed from the phone it realizes that it is not on any network and re-initializes it's network connection, going through the various icons and network types until it gets to 4G and then the call goes out. While the phone is in that limbo state (full bars and 4G icon but not actually connected to the network) incoming calls go straight to voice-mail and no alerts for missed calls or voice mails are sent to the phone... until the process of making an outgoing call from the phone forces it to re-find the network - then incoming calls and voice mail alerts function... until the next instance. This happens several times a day and I have been unable to logically connect the problem it to any activity starting at the phone.
In the early days of 3G this used to happen a lot because the phones (referring to Motorola Razer V3xx) were unable to cleanly release a tower going out of range and attach to a tower coming into range as you traveled. Compounding the problem was the fact that the phones would not fall back on a different network band as they should have when the 3G connections were bad... because bad 3G connections were not being detected by the phone.
Same sh!t, different day! The new generation of 4G phones on AT&T are as bad as ever at falling back to the older network type when needed AND somehow the combination of AT&T and Motorola have managed to recreate this problem on stationary phones in good coverage areas. GOOD GRIEF.
Working my way through some tech levels at Motorola and AT&T. I've always suspected that this has to do with the phone not properly switching between the various networks it uses for calls and data, and to my amazement AT&T leaned towards blaming their own service issues along those very lines of thought. They seem to be having issues managing their 4G LTE stuff. If their next round of escalation does not find an answer I'm going to try forcing WCDMA connection (4G without LTE) to see if the issue relates to the toggle off/on of the LTE component. The LTE indicator is on for data and off for calls and there is a brief moment where the signal dips to zero bars during the transition. The 2 screenshots below show network state during a "4G" call and after call has ended. Perhaps this is where the problem lies. For anyone interested in testing this way, you can use LTE Setting by Ryo Ueshima. Even though that app was developed for Sony Xperia I've used to to test forcing of GSM/Edge and 4G (no LTE) on my Atrix HD. Resets after restart of phone and perhaps at other times, and may behave differently on different providers - also there are some buttons in that app which you don't want to click on without first noting the default value.

Dropping Calls on Sprint Galaxy S3

Just got my S3, and I'm dropping calls in areas where my SE4GT didn't. The calls are either dropping, or are 'breaking up', in the words of multiple people at different phone numbers I'm calling.
The common denominator is that the Calls start off strong, and then within seconds, start to break up then drop.
Maybe the device has to be held a certain way, as with the iPhone. Just throwing that out there, as I don't know.
I'm still trying to isolate the issue.
I've read that this is happening to others, and may be a radio problem.
I just don't want to exchange device if this is a wide spread device issue, which appears to be undetermined yet.
Update:
After calling the same number from my Sprint number, and having the calls (5) fade and drop off within seconds, I called the same number from my GV #, and the call was successful. The call lasted over 1 1/2 hrs. without issue.
Imo, the above rules out an S3 issue, and the issue is with Sprint and the Network, or the Network/Switch of the person I'm calling, in regards to how their Network is handling the Call from the Sprint number.
For what it's worth, I haven't had any such issues with my sprint s3, signal strength in much of my town is sketchy.
Maybe certain S3's had an issue, and I need to exchange mine.
I'm uncertain at this point, as I just got the S3 on Tues.
Please see the Update in the OP.
My gf and I have the same issue. Ive dropped more calls with this phone than the entire 6 years ive been with sprint. Its the samsung radios. Not sure about returning it and getting another unit since it happens in my gfs as well. Its frustrating, my phone also roams in my house which has always had close to a full signal on every other phone ive owned including the epic touch 4g.

Dropping calls as well. My friend too. The radios suck on this phone, so if you're in a marginal coverage area, you'll be dropping more calls with the S3.

I'm dropping calls in areas I didn't have trouble with my SE4GT.
On a side more, I'm not too happy with the camera on my S3, compared to my SE4GT.
On the S3, indoor pics are not as sharp, and are grainy, and the flash washes out the pics.
I thought the dropping call issue may be either:
- Hardware related
- Sprint testing of towers preparing for LTE
- a lemon S3
Regarding the camera issues, I thought may be:
- hardware related, and issue is with all the S3's
- a lemon
Because of the uncertainty regarding the causes of the above, even after extensive searching, I've decided to exchange my S3 for another S3, since I'm within my 14 day return/exchange period.
If the above issue or issues are resolved, then I just had a 'bad' S3.
If the issues aren't resolved, then:
- I got another lemon, which would be doubtful
- or these issues are inherent to all S3's
Hopefully at least one of the issues will be resolved.
I'd rather not switch devices, as I've got my current S3 just right regarding apps, programming, etc.
But I had to try another S3.
If neither issue is resolved with the replacement S3, maybe a future update will resolve one of these issues.
I'll see how it goes with the replacement.
I'd hate to see that the S3 has issues which the SE4GT never had. That's a step backwards, and if true, I most likely made the wrong decision to exchange my S3, and should have just returned it, and reactivated my SE4GT.
Hopefully though, the exchange will make a difference.
I have:
Hardware version:
L710.14
Does anyone know what the current hardware version is, if it has been updated?
I had the same issue with mine, poor signal, but even with the signal reported as ridiculously low I can still place a call.
I exchanged my first phone and thought the new phone was better, the Sprint store has the cell tower in the parking lot so it's hard to tell.
The first thing the phone did when I got home was update software, so I don't know how it would have worked before but after that my signal has remained poor.
I have tried all the other modems and not seen a measurable difference from one to the next.
Also my indicated signal strength vary around wildly swinging from lows below -220 to highs of -90 at home.
Other times closer to a tower I am getting -75, but it falls of very quickly.
This dropping of calls is getting really anoying. It's happening everywhere I didn't have issues with the SE4GT. It's like I know when I make a call, that I'm gonna hear the other side say, "I can't hear you, you're fading out!"
I thought GV solved it, I thought maybe it's a fluke. But the bottomline is, I'm fading and then dropping calls.
I'm thinking it's an internal antenna issue, andd holding the phone a certain way matters ala the iPhone.
But I'm not sure what the issue is, except that it IS an issue.
Is it Sprint working on the Towers?
Is it the LTE Radio in the S3?
I'm hoping the replacement fixes this crap, But I'm not so sure.
i drop quite a few calls as well in areas that i did not previously before. I am also getting alot of failed call attempts and have to redial the number a 2nd or 3rd time to make the call go through... not sure whats up with that.
if you are refering to making a call and it conects for a second then ends the call.
this is a known issue with sprints network and the samsung galaxy and the nexus lte line of phones
IE the S2, Nexus, LTE, and S3.
Sprint knows about this and is supposedly working on it.
(i have seen this problem with INTL GSM phones but i cant speak to there issue as its a total different radio and software)
IMPO it is an issue with the phones radios and software trying to talk to sprints network and getting booted or disconnecting.
IE its the Little seceret your not suposed to know about
(it affects Making 911 calls to)
My SE4GT hardly had any dropped calls.
My current S3 drops them like crazy.
Multiple times daily from different areas.
I can call from the same location in my room and have multiple fading of the call, then it drops.
I then call again, and it's fine.
This is usually how it goes:
- a call is made
- after a minute or so, the called party says I'm fading.
- I move around, I hold the phone differently, and the called party says ok, I can hear you.
- a few seconds later the called party says hello multiple times, and then says I can't hear you.
- the called party just hangs up the call in disgust, or the call drops
*The interesting thing is that before the call is dropped, and the called party says I'm fading, I can still hear them fine.
Maybe this is a clue to what the issue may be.
Hopefully it's a defective device, and my replacement will fair better. I'll see in a few days.
I say this because my SE4GT worked perfectly, while others dropped calls, from what I've read.
S3 Coverage, Phone / Network Problems - NYC Area
Im in the NYC area and dropping calls all over the place including on the Hutchinson River Pkwy, Henry Hudson Pkwy, Merritt Pkwy, etc.
I'm now testing my replacement and so far it looks like the radio in this phone is garbage on Sprint's network compared to every other Sprint phone I've had going back 5 years. I'll be back in NYC on Monday so I'll try the replacement then but within my home my coverage has evaporated with this phone however another Sprint model is working 100% here (both phones showing 1 bar).
My guess is that this phone is going to fade away on Sprint pretty quickly with the exception of users staying within local metro areas where hand-offs are going to be more limited as they won't be able to support the troubles with it.
I received my replacement S3, and still have the same issues, as I thought I probably would.
I installed the LG8 modem, as it had the LG2 modem as the last one did, so I'll see how that goes,
Looks like a stronger signal, but I'll know for sure shortly.

I just found this app:
Network Signal Info
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.android.telnet&hl=en
It won't make your signal stronger, but it'll give you some important signal info, in addition to other device info, with a quick look. Includes a really nice widget.

If my phone continues to drop calls I'll be dropping Sprint. Ive got almost a week left on my 14 day trial. I love the phone but it just won't be with this carrier.
I'm still on LG8, and will know if it resolved the dropping call issues by early next week, and if the cause was LG2.
I don't know why the cause of the dropping of calls has not been addressed by Sprint or Samsung yet.
It appears to be an issue that was not an issue with the Samsung Epic 4G Touch.
What's going on?
I hope it is a Modem issue.
We'll see.
I'm not seeing a whole lot about this issue on the web, or on xda, unless I missed the discussions.
Confirmed Fix:
As mentioned previously, I flashed the LG8 Modem from LG2. This has resolved my dropped call issue in at least one area where I was consistently dropping calls since I received my S3. This is Fantastic news for me!
I'm in the -70's into the -60's dB range in the area I am now getting great reception in.
I didn't check the signal dB previously, but was dropping calls All the time in this location.
I have not made many calls from other areas I was dropping calls in as of yet. I'll update when I see how other previous trouble areas are.
LG8 has worked very nicely for me.
Obviously ymmv, depending on your location.
Battery efficiency is the same as before, which has been very good.
Update:
Still dropping calls all over the place, except in the area stated above.
I have never had such horrendous dropped call issues in the 14+ years of cell phone usage. At least none that come to mind as wiht e S3.
I already have a trouble ticket filed, but it is to check a tower in one area. I drop calls all over the place.
My 2nd S3, new contract, etc.
This bites Big Time!

Resurrecting this thread... totally frustrated with my S3 in Indianapolis. They are rolling out 4G which is great, but if I receive a call, it almost always goes silent after about 15-20 seconds then drops 5-10 seconds later. If I call the person back it seems fine and I usually don't drop the call. I feel like it's been worse since Jellybean. Another Sprint/S3 person in my office has the same issue, but a 3rd person says not that much trouble.
Already filed two complaints with Sprint--but I'm to the point of not answering calls and returning voicemails because of the issue. Sprint says "oh yea, we're working on the towers and it should be fixed". Can't wait for them to call me back and the call drops.
The S3 is great and much better than the S2--but if you can't answer your calls on your phone... I have a problem with that.
I hope anyone else with similar issues has called sprint to tell them to fix the problem. I may try Google Voice for calling to see if that helps, but the constant DTMF tones in the background of GV drive me batty.

Note 5 & microcell

For 2.5 months I've been going round and round with AT&T with connectivity issues with my note 5 and my microcell. It happens about 50-75% of the time I will go to text or call someone it will disconnect from the Microcell. I have had 6 different techs say it isn't a known issue and one that says it is. My note 4 had no problems. The latest tech told me to give him until Tuesday to work this out one way or the other. Anyone else having the same issues?
Not the same but my phone will make a call but acts like it's on mute. On speaker, BT, or the phones built speaker.
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
I'm trying to figure out if this is a Samsung as a whole thing or just the Note 5 as my Note 4 was fine.
Microcell seems be playing move here. Seems there setting in Microcell y that takes hand offs, are something like it. But I sure u checked it all ready.
From space using SM-N920A.
So not sure if this helps but here is my experience. I went from a note 4 a note 5 and the white microcell didn't work at all. My wife's S5 worked fine as did my note 4. Att replaced the microcell with the newer black version. This did allow my note 5 to recognize the microcell and work. However, it does sometimes drop calls when I am on the phone for a while. Also, I notice in the morning the microcell has one or zero bars of service but still shows its connected. A power cycle of the phone works or the microcell does start to get service as I use the phone more. It's been good so far but not perfect.

hello, hey i had the same issue with my note 5 and my wifes s6. They had to re register my cell a few times, and do some other of their black magic to get my note 5 to work. My wife s6 still did not work till they disabled something called hand off or something of that nature. Sorry i forget what its called been a few months since i had to deal with them. I had the white tower, then they sent me the black tower. I still have issues with dropped calls once and a while and some times have to restart phone to get it to connect to tower but. works better now then it did. Its not you and yeah they should know about it i called them to cancel my plan if they did not get it fixed.
I upgraded from a note 4 and had trouble with my N5 and my microcell. It never connected and the other three phones in the house did just fine. I went through a few steps with online chat. What finally worked was to remove the microcell from my account settings and then add it back. This forces a reinstall and complete set-up from scratch. the unit did a software update as part of the process. the whole process took 30-50 minutes. My N5 connected immediately upon completion and has been rock solid since.
I have the black microcell and the note 5. Only issue I have is sending MMS with it, but that is likely due to a configuration issue with my wifi. No voice or texting issues otherwise.
I have a newer black microcell and a Note 5... If i am connected to the Microcell while in a poor HD Voice (Voice over LTE) area... If my phone connects to the Microcell AND is on WiFi... half the time my calls go right to voicemail and I don't get my texts. It is even worse if someone sends a MMS photo, it seems like everything stops then and doesn't even attempt to connect. Funny thing is, if I turn off WiFi everything seems to work fine.... I just unplugged the microcell and am dealing with the less than stellar signal in my area... Where is the WiFi calling already? :-/
I was thinking about getting a micro cell. If there a deal? T mobile gives them.out for free now. Also, any health issues in having a cellntower in your home?

I have absolutely ZERO issues using my old (pre=4G LTE) microcell with my Note 5.
I have a black micro cell tower and a note 5 and I have turned off the micro cell tower until I want to waste some more time with AT&T on the issues.
If you look outside the forum you will find a lot of complaints about the micro cell tower.
All my lights are on the micro cell tower have always been on since initial setup and a couple of service tries.
During one service call with a rep the phone call disconnected when all bars were on phone with micro cell connection indicated. That was the last time. I may try again sometime but for now it is unplugged. To many dropped calls and no connection or bars on phone. When I restart the phone it usually reconnects but it is still subject to dropped calls and unsent text messages.
I will comment back if it ever works correctly when I feel like trying tech support again.
Having issues as well. Note 5 on my old white/orange microcell worked perfectly, except of course no outgoing MMS. I got upgraded to the black newer microcell, $75 credit brought it down to $75, and there is a current rebate for that so it was free. Now my N5 drops calls, and at times doesn't show it as connected. Nothing comes up on troubleshooting with a rep, and they even had me change m SIM. Kind of funny, but I'll probably go back to the white/orange older microcell.
Microcell Note 5&4 issues
I've been having connecting issues with my microcell both white and black for sometime and recently discovered a remedy that baffles me. I have the Note 5 and my wife has the Note 4 and we both would go minutes to hours before the microcell would connect to our phones. AT&T was prettty much useless and time consuming at best. With both my wife and I home I got the idea to call her cell and not have her answer. As soon as I hung up the microcell connected. I've done this 2 more days consecutively and it continues to work! Any ideas and can someone else try this?

Well my white microcell went out. Since then they sent me a black one. @ first I couldn't get it to connect but for few seconds. Then I deactivate then reactivate the device. Set device for "Automatically Hand Out" . Now it seems to be playing nice with Note 5.

I have the exact same issue with Note 5. The phone says ATT Micro Cell, and the bar is full, but as soon as I send a text, the bar goes down to single bar, and take a while to sent a simple text...my S4 has no problem whatsoever...
I have same issues for past few month and for past few weeks it has become more noticeable. I'm getting a replacement for my white one so I'm hoping its fixes teh issues, but looking at comments here and also over internet looks like its a widespread issues hitting Notes 5.
I've the same issue with samsung note 5. My gf's iphone 6s works great with the at&t microcell and samsung note 5 sucks. It acts so bizarre . As soon as you text sometimes, the signal quickly drops from 5 bars to 1 or almost 0 bars and then the text message says it's trying to send. And then fails. But the receiver 50% of the time receives it ansd 50% not. You think it failed and you try to resend again and your recipient receives duplicates. I've been facing way too many issues with samsung note 5. I'm now seriously rethinking every buying a samsung again. I had and still have issues with regular cell reception, regardless of everything off on the wifi, it keeps searching and reconnecting back to wifi even if it's off (yes yes, i turned off all smart connect, at&t auto connect, everything else on it). Drives me crazy. Now this micro cell issue. the iphone works like a charm.
i picked up a used old style 3g microcell (white nd orange) on ebay for $8 (YES EIGHT DOLLARS) shipped. It came without a power adapter but who doesn't have a drawer full of them? Fired it up registered it and within 30 mins I am up and running. No issues so far in my basement apartment using my Note5 latest ATT firmware stock. MMS txt and calling are far superior than what it was like without this!
