Thinking of getting Note 2 and replace my S3 but.. - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have Galaxy S3. I really like the phone except one thing.. Battery life. It seems that the battery life is worse than my previous phone Iphone 4s which i still have. I've read some posts with people claiming note2 gets up to 8 hours of screen on time, and some reviews that claimed iphone 5 gets better battery life than the note 2.
My question is, would getting a note 2 for its battery life worth it? I do tons of browsing and watching videos on my phone, not so much games. I want my phone to last for the whole day with heavy usage without having to charge it.

Here are the battery tests by gsmarena
You can chexk for yourself Note II is far ahead.
Plus there are a million more features in Note II other than battery life... I think the undisputed winner is Note II

No, don't get the Note II for its battery life.
If you buy a phone because of its battery life, it should be the RAZR MAXX (clear evidence in that gsmarena link above, no?)

I had the Gs3 for a month before getting the 2 and I had to put my extra battery at around 4 when at 10 it was fully charged now with the note 2 I can use it all day long =) so the bottom line get the note 2 if you can afford it =)

Here is my analysis after using galaxy series for a year. My usage is gaming, browsing and music
s1 Average screen on time: 3hrs
s2 Average screen on time: 4hrs
s3 Average screen on time: 5hrs
Note 2 Average screen on time: 6-7 hrs
This shows you the clear difference between s3 and note 2. Battery is quite good.

I came from s3 and love it. The battery life is much much better. Ive been getting 6 hours screen time and that includes hd video playback and gps on using navigation.

For heavy use, the note 2 would be nice for battery life.. But as always ymmv and im not sure about that iphone 5 due to my brother telling me he basically has to stay on the charger with it

Personally coming from the IPhone 4 s....and having every iteration of the IPhone beforehand, I simply love the note 2 and am blown away by itw battery time.
For the first time in many years, I have a device that lasts all day, and believe me I hammer it.
Working as a designer, I use this to its fullest and the multi windows feature, s pen usage, twitter and web browsing, and now using photo shop touch on my note 2 constantly (thank you kind members for donation of the apk), the phone just copes so well with plenty of juice by the time I get home.
Never looking back
No more Apple for me

Note2 is the best. Go for it

Sounds like the battery life is good on the note 2. I guess I'll sell my s3 and get it

Battery life
I had the original note. I had problems with the battery life, never satisfied with it. I have note ii for 2 days. I am impressed. Not only battery life is outstanding - conveniently one day with heavy use, but charging is super fast also. Major improvement in battery and charging, it is a great phone in total!

Comparing your 4s with an s3?
If you used the s3 just the same as you do the 4s I bet it would last longer. You are using a device with more capabilities so of course its going to die faster.
Nothing will beat the note 2 battery life though.

Battery life alone is worth it, but there are a million other reasons to get this phone! Keep in mind mine is Int'l version (no LTE radio) and i am not a power user, but still i can't put this phone down and i haven't chargd it in almost 3 days, still 60+ percent left : )

Yes. There is a huge difference specially when multi tasking. This is the reason I gave up my s3. No matter how many apps I load on the note it doesn't stutter but on my s3 it does. Also, when calling apps back to the screen, on the note they don't have to reload all their content, on the s3 it reloads every time.

[Q] How's your Galaxy Nexus battery life?

I am just curious to know what other Galaxy Nexus owners are getting out of their battery.
Let me start by sharing mine.
During my sleep or when my phone is idle or when I know I am not using it for a long period of time, I switch my phone to 2G.
Below is a screenshot of my battery usage during a long period of idle (overnight when I am sleeping)

I only switch it to 3G when I am actively using the Internet for surfing websites, Facebooking, Youtube, uploading photos or video.
Below is a screenshot of my usage from light to moderate to heavy.
I got just over 2 days out of mine with a mixture of wifi, 3g, calls, and general use with facebook, trillian and google+
I went into the bathroom with full charge and after I did my daily deed(s) I went down to 43% with brightness turned all the way down and only running xda app. wtf gives?

This is EXACTLY the kind of battery life that I am getting.
Quality posting. Thanks
You guys must be on the gsm versions, the only people that aren't happy are the ones on 4g
I have the lte sgn and I would say my battery life is directly related to the screen on time.
The battery is usually completely discharged once the screen on time approaches around 3 hours, regardless of the total time it has been since the last full charge.
Sometimes I can get 20+ hours total life and sometimes I can barely get 5 or 6 hours of total life. Just depends on how fast I reach the screen on time "limit" so to speak of about 3 hours or so.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I have the 4g, and ill admit, when i got it the battery life was pretty bad. In part to newphonesyndrom, but stock is pretty bad in general
Currently running peter alfonso's bugless beast 4.0.3 and francico franco's kernel #6. Battery life has gotten wayyy better; so there is a light at the end of the stock tunnel. My phone goes into cpu sleep way more than before, and on the computer side of things, its efficient to the point that the screen uses 75% of battery compared to the 50% i used to see (more battery to screen means less everything else is drawing). And turning down the brightness, i kinda like the fuzzy whites, kinda gives it a paperlike texture
And turn off wifi if you are not actively using, it will just search endlessly. Same with turning off 4g if you are going to be in a 3g area for awhile

How high is your screen brightness?
1h45m with screen on is most likely considerably longer than the time the other posters have had their screens on for.
EDIT: I'm saying this because most people with brilliant battery life tend to have LOW screen on time.

This was at Auto Brightness. I know I had the screen on for a long time, but is this what I need to accept from now on? That after a total time of 2 hours of screen ON time, the battery will be dead? Is the only way to get good battery life to turn off 4G and not use the phone that much? I would expect the phone to be able to survive for at least 3-5 hours even if the screen was on 100%, but maybe I am just being naive.

I am curious about your battery times. I would like to know your screen "ON" time for at least the light and heavy usage that you reported.
All the battery posts I have been reading on this forum seem to directly correlate to screen "On" time. I have a theory that the battery dies after 2-3 hours of screen on time regardless of most other factors. So some people may get 16-18 hrs of battery time, but the screen was only on for 2.5 hours or so. If you get a chance I would love to see some of your battery reports with the Display on time reported next to them.

Well, less than 3 hours is pretty awful.
That's around what I get if I play games like GTA or Shadowgun for more than an hour.
I have the GSM GN so if you did turn 4G off you should have similar times as me. Which are on average 8-12 hours of moderate use including a lot of WhatsApp-ing, some music, some Facebook, some browsing, some calls and texts.
However playing games literally will drink my battery life away, so I tend to keep 3D games to a minimal when on the go.
Sorry if I am stealing the thread. I put this to anyone else with some battery screenshots. Take a screenshot of your display "ON" time and put it next to your total battery on time.
I would love to see if anyone is getting 3-6 hours of screen "ON" time coupled with 10-20 hours of Total Battery Time. Anyone?

I seriously doubt it. That is something I genuinely miss about my iPhone 4--I could get 8+ hours of screen on time and well over a day of standby on a single charge.

OOOH, we are taking that route huh? Well one reason why these lower than average battery times don't bother me that much is because I own 4 batteries for the Galaxy Nexus (2 standard, 2 extended) and can SWAP my batteries whenever I feel like it. Can you do that with your iPhone 4??? No, didn't think so.
P.S. I know you just threw in a iPhone screenshot for the fun of things. Thanks for the laugh!
Screen on time of a little over 3 hours and my battery is in the 30% range.
I definitely agree that the screen on time is the biggest factor. The battery seems to die once 3 or 4 hours of screen on time has been reached, regardless of how long the total life has been.

At least you are getting 3-4 hours. I am barely getting 1.5 hours of screen on time before my battery is close to dead. It's alright though, I battery swap regularly and I will figure it out eventually. Just keep turning stuff off till my battery life improves a bit.

I think that kind of confirms it for me. Your screen on time is in the 3 to 4 hour range and your battery is almost completely discharged.
Once the screen on time reaches the 3-4 hour range, the phone dies. It just took you 2 days to reach the 3-4 hour screen on time.

Whoa buddy, ease off the haterade. I wasn't trying to start an argument or anything. I sold my iPhone 4 to buy a Galaxy Nexus, and I'm very happy with my decision. But the reality is the i4 got much better battery life, and I posted a screenshot (from my device) to support that. Swapping batteries wasn't necessary, and carrying around 4 doesn't exactly help your case.
No one is attacking your mother. Chill.

I agree, its absolutely insane and I love it! I had it kid tested on Saturday, my youngest was playing games all day, had it off charger for about 16 hours and still had around 20% left.
I can actually "use" this thing and not worry about it dying by 3:00 in the afternoon.
Here's my thing I'm an average user of my phone. Everyday I live on the web and I talk on it and text a lot but I still get really good battery time and this was just with the default Android operating system stock from Sprint.

Folks, remember this phone has a 3100mah battery compared to the ~2500mAh batteries of other phone.
We have an extra 25% battery life built in just by increasing the mAh (Milliamp Hours) capacity.
But even still ... it's damn nice to have a phone that I could easily get 2 days use from, or stretch to 3 days if needed.
I get about 7 hours screen time.. Even with playing games and Texting non stop all day while browsing the Internet
Everything on 3g..I think those getting more then 7-8 hours are on wifi alot

Exactly I was amazed at how well this thing handles Gaming, Movies, Streaming etc. Tasks that would regularly RAPE another devices battery, on my old Evo4g Even when I ran games like Fruit ninja or watched a decent sized video on youtube in HQ it would eat the battery in a couple hours. Now i know comparing the two is completely different leagues but for me it was my last device that I had that could even perform somewhat similar tasks (before that was a Palm Pre). Just running GTA3 on my Gn2 the other day I played for 1hr and 10min straight with graphics turned all the way up and it only drained 2-3%. I was in shock, I was expecting ATLEAST a 15% drop for that kind of game for that period of time. I understand that it is a pretty large battery but at the same time with the performance that it puts out and the beautiful display IMO the battery performance is phenomenal.
This damn Note 2 just continues to paint a Smile on my face every time I use it. Something just always seems to do it. And for those of you who really Love to demand everything from your phone which can be a workout on a battery. Use the Galaxy Note 2 Holder / Battery Charger / Battery, which comes with a Dock/charger combo that holds the phone up in the front then flip open the flap behind the dock area and a spare battery is charging within the unit. It has built in LED's to let you know its charging and done. The kit runs for $49.99 and comes with the dock/charger a spare STOCK 3100mah battery and battery case. The small clear cases like an old Micro dv tape would go in for a camcorder(but obviously a firm fit for the battery). Now considering if you buy a stock replacement battery they go for $44.99, this combo stated above is a deal in my mind. You will never have to be anchored to a charge cord again, just charge up the spare throw it in its small case and toss it in you pocket or car. Use your device to your hearts content then when running low just pop the back cover off and slip in spare and bam full 100% charge. Then you could either plug the dead/low battery in your car and have it ready in a couple hours again. or just continue to use you phone and plug it in when you get home. I personally love this accessory and Have it on order from Samsung's US site. Which if you look around they are offering 50% off to US customers right now on ALL accessories. :good:

FWIW... i picked up one of these Charger/Cradle/Etc units from Samsung's website last week at 50% off and i LOVE it. Haven't had need of the spare battery yet, but having it gives me peace of mind. Plus, the cradle works in portrait or landscape position, and you can plug in the USB to charge while it's landscape (so it works as an alarm clock). Plus, added perk... since the N2 is approximately the same thickness as my Nexus 7, the cradle works with that tablet as well. Best accessory ever!

Did you ever figure what happen to your phone that causes all that battery drainage? I remembered your 7 hrs screen on time all with cellular data. Those number are hard to beat. I more curious so something like that won't happen to me.
Its so refreshing to have a phone that I don't have to worry about carrying around a charger and plugging it in at every opportunity that I have. Moderate usage today involved a few phone calls, texts, about an hour of twitter, downloading and listening to a 3hr podcast, about an hour of various games. Been off charger for 19hrs now and I'm at 59% battery. ****in unheard of coming from an og EVO. One of the many reasons I love this phone.

Really depends on how you use the phone, what kind of signal you get, how you work inside, if you play games etc.
Typically I get a good 10 hours on my phone without any charging, but I am seldom in that position, I have wireless chargers at work and home and charge any time I am sleeping.
Never had a note 2 to compare with but this phone is way better than my previous and I use it a lot more than the old one.

Thought the 6.5 hours was a joke. Wow 10 hour is not mutch unless you are a extra heavy user. I would usually get between 14 to 16 hours with about 3 hours of screen on for internet and gaming. This was on Jedi Master x20 with custom rom
someone out must be getting 14 to 16 hours. If not is it because oh the HD screen?
going to do more research on Note 3.
thanks for your insite.

10 hours off screen time uh? I believe u only if u only swipe through home screens and don't use the phone normally. I was getting 8 hours of screen time with the G flex with heavy use and the note 3 cannot pull that off, be real.

he is real there is someone if not him have proven with screenshots, our phone can handle that. its all about knowing how to prioritize your battery on your phone and settings. not every phone is the same so some can handle and do that others may not.
And the G-Flex isn't even out yet

The G flex isnt even out yet? Its been out for nearly 3 months, its called the unlocked korean version.
Second, I dont care what screen shots one provides, u cannot get 10hrs of screen on time of "normal usage" on the note 3, thats not happening unless your goal is to squeeze as much battery life as possible to prove that it can. If that's the case then even the S4 can do that, all u have to do is set the brightness at zero and swipe through the home screen the whole day. Then maybe make a phone call or 2 then boom! 8 hrs of screen time achieve but whats the point? Were talking average normal usage. If the G flex cant do it the note 3 certainly cant.
There was a thread in the one x forum where a guy pulled off 12 hours of screen on time. Do u think thats its normal usage? Be real guys.

Um in the states its not released so to most people who live in America don't have it. But it is normal usuage. My note 2 was able to get 8 Hours normal usage no playing games but internet, youtube, messaging, etc... its called customizing your phone to perform well at a battery saving stand point. On my note 2 i was running a kernel, rom, and undervolted and made everything the phone can do to push more battery life and it did. 8Hours screen on time, 12-14Hrs on battery overall.
I got about 7hrs of SOT with 17hrs of off charger time yesterday. Mostly used on WiFi.

lol use my phone? More days then not I'll have an hour or so of YouTube, about 2.5-3 hours of SlingBox or Netflix going over data not wifi, i stream music for a 1-1.5 hours throughout the work day maybe an hour of web surfing 15+ emails each day and I use the Action Memo instead of pen and paper for random stuff all day and will still be at 45-50% battery left. That's not that far off from a typical day and thats fairly heavy use, so yeah, my Note 3 pulls this off. Don't hate if yours doesn't. Maybe I average closer to 9 hours of screen time but i have regularly seen 10-10.5 hours.
Screenshot is from yesterday and is a light day of use though I did watch 4 episodes of Breaking Bad and an hour of the Super bowl in HD from my slingbox (My GF drug me out of the house last night). I don't usually take SS but a friend was asking what i was getting yesterday on my Note 3 so i took one.

I never specified the region did I? Fact is the G flex is out. And actually folks have the flex from today in the US (at least AT&T) so what now?
Now youre bringing the note 2 when were actually talking about the note 3. If he was getting 10 hours of screen on time with normal usage then we should see more of it in the battery life thread right? But guess what? We do not. Everybody knows that the note 3 has good battery life, but 10 hrs of screen on time? You have to be kidding yourself. Nobody gets that on average unless again, youre doing everything you can so you can reach that to post it here for bragging rights. I think it is misleading as some folks might wanna purchase this phone thinking that its that kind of battery life they would get.

I do tweak my phone. The only thing i do though is restrict background data on apps i don't need running in the background. I leave my location settings (wifi setting) on but not GPS and i have email sync once an hour not every 15 min. I have my google account sync turned off as i just sync it only when i add new calender events or new contacts. There is no need to have it sync 30 times a day for nothing. I use no battery saver apps as they usually just eat battery running in the background so it can watch stuff.

[Q] Battery life on the Tab Pro 8.4

The 8.4" should be the perfect size... But the 4800 mah battery doesn't look too promising on paper.
It's about the same as the note 8 and has a bigger/much higher resolution screen and a faster SoC... and the battery on the Note 8 wasn't great to begin with.
Any idea how the the tab Pro will fare?
Apple increased the weight/thickness to maintain the battery life on the mini with retina display... Wonder if Samsung should've done something similar.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galax...F8&qid=1391889878&sr=8-1&keywords=tab+pro+8.4
According to the product description in Amazon it's up to 6 hours..!! Wth samsung this is ridiculous, I want to buy this tablet but now I must looking for alternatives
6hrs would be very disappointing.
GSMarena have a unit for review. It should be live early next week.
Probably get a better idea then. Doesn't sound too good.

That is iPad mini levels. Don't expect that. Even if its 80% of what they claim, it'll be good enough.
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/SM-T320NZWAXAR-specs
Well GSMArena got 7:30 for both video playback and web browsing. In my opinion I am fairly disappointed as that is clearly the Achilles of this tablet. People with mixed usage should expect 4-5 hours of screen time which is like 60% of the battery life on the iPad mini.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I am extremely disappointed too.
It's inadmissible that by wanting to match or undercut competition by 1 or 2mm in relates to device thickness they're willing to cripple it like this.
Because this is what we're talking about: 1 couple more millimeters in the battery thickness and most probably a very significant mAh bump could be attained.
Let's see if this is not DOA because of this. The "A"-cult reviewers, always already so accolades-limited when talking about Samsung products, will have a ball with this one, that's for sure.
XK
Never expected it to match the iPad mini.. 8 hrs flat wouldve been decent.. like I said earlier. 80% of the ipad is about what you'd expect from an Android tablet. and that should get you through the day
That said, I'm unsure about their testing methods. They have the Nexus 7 2013 at just 7 hrs of video playback which is very low. Anandtech shows it at about 12 hours.
Similar for the web browsing tests
Wonder if GSM Arena make the mistake of checking battery at 50% brightness instead of setting it at a certain number and not %.
That would skew results.
Link to Anandtech's nexus 7 battery test
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7231/the-nexus-7-2013-review/2
Another area where the iPad does brilliantly is the 3D battery life. It gets over 6hrs whereas Android tablets struggle to get past 4. But I don't really game that much so that isn't a deal breaker.
It's not a disaster..It's on the same level as the G Pad 8.3,, Waiting for other reviews to test the battery.

Please don't do this. Relativise shortcomings of a device is an Apple-cult thing.
This can be a disaster. The only thing that can save it from a disaster is if both the screen and processor prove out to be extremely frugal in what relates to power consumption.
I'll give you an example of a real-life severe inconvenience of the short battery life in my otherwise amazing Tab 7.7:
While in a foreign country, using it as a navigator with both WI-Fi and GPS turned on (for Google maps full use) or even with just GPS activated (for Co-Pilot usage) my tab dies 1/2 to 3/4 into our daily run-abouts, at the precise moment we are becoming tired, less vigilant and acute-deductive, the time of the day when we usually need it most.
...And since we're talking about shortcomings, although the GSM rates the 8.4 display as "amazing" I see that a crucial parameter for photography (my main hobby and the one I subject all my purchases in this area to) and high-resolution movies viewing is also not that impressive. The contrast ration is rated at 1:822 / 1:830, right in the same range as Retina ones (with these actually having lower black levels).
One of the reasons I elected the 7.7 as my tab and why I love it is the practically infinite contrast ratio, something that makes movies and photographs "pop" like nothing else on the market.
I understand that, not featuring an Super-AMOLED screen, the 8.4 could never deliver those levels of contrast, but....1:830?
XK
Im waiting on some more reviews before I determine my final judgement on this tablet.
Unfortunately after seeing the iPad Air's battery life first hand, it is hard to be impressed by 7:30 screen on time which in reality will be a lot less than that.
Apple places a conservative estimation of battery life on the iPad at 10 hours yet the iPad exceeds those estimates in pretty much all reviews and user opinions.
I have gotten fed up with these estimates provided by Android tablet manufacturers, Samsung mentions 12 hours of multimedia playback yet the devices lasts for barely 60% of that in its first test.

I will wait too but one thing is already clear: Running times won't be impressive.
Samsung is playing with fire here.
While this whole tab thing was in inception/infancy it was OK to come short on this (...or tapping the "models explosion" approach...). People would go "it's OK, they're probing approaches".
But as "mobile devicery" reaches it's adult stage, with users approaching the acquisition of models the same way they do the replacement of their TV sets, refrigerators or cars, they running the palpable risk of having users deep imprinting the notion: "Samsung...Yeah, they're OK but their running times suck".
Once this mind set reaches the majority of the potential market there will be no turning back. It won't matter then that they come up with a tab or a smartphone that can run 5 days without recharging, it will still be perceived as "Meh!".
American cars were once found to be "gas guzzlers". It doesn't matter that the US auto industry now makes models as frugal as anyone else. Worldwide consumers still perceive them that way and that is killing the perfect option US auto makers could resort to in order to swiftly circumvent the disaster that befell upon them: Neutralize domestic sales drops by going global.

I have owned the 8.4 since the summer, and have had an average mixed usage battery life of about ten hours. This includes being connected to WiFi, watching YouTube and browsing the web, and cooing over cat pics on social media apps. It's not as utterly disappointing as you make it out to be. It doesn't last as long when watching YouTube at 1080p60 or playing a resource-intensive game like WoT or RR3, but that is to be expected.
Lighten up, yeah?

So far battery's been meh

Not sure how's everyone's battery stats been with the t-mobile variant of the M8, but compare to other phones I've used recently like the LG G2 and the Sony Xperia Z1s, my battery life's been been unimpressive so far.

I was very skeptical about the battery when I jumped from the LG G2 as the G2 had amazing battery life. but the M8 is on par if not better in my opinion,,

Same here! I was worried coming from the Note 3 to the M8 with the smaller battery. I have kept any stats but my M8 makes it 24 hrs no problem.
I think it's an unfair assessment to just say it's meh. I came from the Note 3 which is probably one of the best batteries out there (mostly due to it's size) and it's holding it's own against that battery life, imo. I've never tried LG G2 or Xperia, but I know Note 3 regularly was at the top if not the #1 battery life phone. Most sites are rating it as above the Note 3, including Anandtech. Idk I think it's all about usage and time. You use a new phone more initially so I'll reserve judgment until I get into a regular flow with it.
OP has a broken M8.
Cancelled my online order and picked up my M8 Friday, been using it over the weekend in the same scenario as my G2.
Battery life is slightly better than the G2, which I ranked as having the most amazing battery life of any phone I've used next to my Note 2.

The battery life is "meh". Stop watching so much pRon. Lmao jk all jokes aside, the m8's battery is superior for only 2600mah. Thanks a ton to the energy effecient snapdragon 801. Anyway I wake up at 8 and don't plug it back in anywhere around 10-12 at night. That's heavy browsing, snap chat, xda (uses a lot of battery), 20 minutes or so of modern combat 4 and on top of that 90 percent of my day is on campus and I have horrible signal and still the battery is phenominal. you Might have a defective unit or have some rogue apps going crazy in the background

I'm curious as to what you are doing with the phone to kill it so quickly...
Coming from the og One and Nexus 4 the in the past 9 months I have to say the battery life has been awesome. With moderately heavy use I can very easily go a day and end up at 30-40%.
Not to be a **** but have you don't any searching to see what the issue may be before complaining? Use the tools at hand:
GSAM Battery Monitor
Wakelock detector
Built in battery monitor
Find what the issue is. Most likely its an app with a killer wakelock that you don't even know exists. I just switched to a N5 and am going to the M8 tomorrow and my N5 has slept better then any phone I have ever had because I haven't installed useless apps that sometimes have issues that cause locks.
There is a chance you have a bum device, chances are more likely that you have a bad app though
- this post was more intended at Juniorluna who surprising has only 1 post and its to complain about the One.... Interesting
