Why CM9, CM10 - Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660

* * First of all I tried CM9 (Maclaw's version) and I like it very much, but there is a lot of bugs which make it non-stable and not daily use rom.
So, why you guys want to port, create and use something that is not finished, stable and with broken apps and stuff? And plus CM9/10 are not, and probably won't be able on Gio ever.
We don't have official CM7 yet, but CM7 is much more stable then CM9/10.
I just don't understand why would someone use his phone if i.e. bluetooth, camera, and other stuff don't work properly or don't work at all.
Of course, if you can make CM9/10 to work i.e. like CM7 it's ok, but I see a lot of new roms, and they are all based on CM9/10 which means that they are not working properly so again I'm wondering why would someone use it.

maybe cuz they dont use their phone as camera, or never use bluetooth.
I havent had cm10 on my gio.
I still stuck to GB.

I somewhat agree. While it's nice to have the latest bells and whistles on our phones to test out, they will never fully work. I've had my Gio for over a year, about first month of it I used stock. I'd already forgotten what a stable phone looked like and decided yesterday to try a stock based ROM. It's really fast and everything seems to be working flawlessly. It's a shame there aren't more gingerbread/stock based ROMs under active development. I think I'm gonna use it now, but I will check back to JB roms to see how new updates work.

I think because they r different. I m bored with stock n cm 7. I need a change and u 9 that change is good but still a galaxy gio

Well it depends on everyone how they use their phone but for me Maclaws CM9 RC1 is still the best ROM and optimized for my daily use even though camera doesnt works which isnt a big problem for me cuz I dont use. Yet My battery doesnt last long because of this and i feel that i have -ed my phone features.

I'm enjoying Jelly Bean (AOKP) on my Samsung Galaxy Gio. I think it's so beautiful that I can't go back to a stock-based ROM. Also, I do really like Google Now, and as that is only working in Jelly Bean, it is an extra reason for me. But yes, I miss a lot of functionality, although I don't use the camera much. Sometimes my phone reacts too late, but I think it's worth it. So I am very happy there are devs for ICS and JB.

Well, that's pretty hard to do. I mean, if someone can fix all bugs, they'll be fixed already, right...
So, I think it will need a little bit more time to make a bugfree CM9/10.

I got my Gio with 2.3.6 (or was it 2.3.7?), a late gingerbread version. it worked so far, but was slow with scrolling and opening apps. when first trying the maclaw cm9 it got a lot smoother, faster. that was a real progress, apart from that the camera was not working and other bugs. also, with rc2 bluetooth got broken again, very annoing.
so i discovered jellaxy and tried all the aokp, cm9, cm10. I dont need the latest features, so cm9 would be ok for me; but cm9 seems not so stable than cm10. aokp seemed nice, but no profiles and no lockscreen app configuration.
of course, with that amount of memory i have to use a swap partition and link2sd, but I think I get the most out of this cheap handy.

Yeah, but jb hasn't got official adreno libs .. so graphical issue, also it lack of ram and lag a bit, for me the choice is cm9- based, because cm9 is ugly, instead miui, aokp, cna are better

Biggest problem with JB are the omxlib so use cm9 AOKP and you get a nice ROM with almost everything working.

I agree with you. Devs should develop GB roms, because our phones were made to run in GB for some reason (other than company profit) and it's so stable. You can use any GB rom for everyday use because there aren't any problems in modding it.

We have cm7, miui, lewa os and stock samsung gb rom, gb development is complete, now let's go at next step ,ics require same specs of gb, jb requires only some fixes ( adreno lib and omx), so for now ics is like phiexz cm7 at starting, all that is working is working better than stock, the other thing have to be fixed, but as you can know, in ics only camcorder have to be fixed, I wanna just say, wait a month and then i will bet that you will switch to ics

Best ICS ROM?

Opinions on ICS for the DINC anyone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1719879
I use AOKP Build 40. It has the most features but it is slightly unstable.
I haven't messed around with it on my Inc lately. But I did note that a lot of rims didn't manage to support camcorder. Considering the good camera. I dislike xD

Been using this, and I've had a pretty good experience. Really excited about PureMotive's and Albinoman's work on jelly bean, however: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751992
I really really liked this rom, but the phone is completely broken so I had to go back to GB. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736971
I'd also love a recommendation on a good ICS rom.
Any of the CM9 variants, you can use a third party camcorder if you need it. AOKP has a few more features, but they're not as well implemented imo and it's randomly unstable.

AOKP is badass but the battery was so bad I couldn't use it long term. I'm trying drk.hd CM9 right now for a hopefully better battery life.
Evervolv's ics ROM works great for me. Camera works, never had a random reboot, and very smooth.

My vote goes to Linaro CM9 or the other CM9 by hd.drk (although I had some battery issues with it, my buddy has not). Both are snappy and 99% problem free.
Which (if any) 3rd party camcorder apps are any of you using?
I know it's a phone, not a camera, etc etc etc, but with a toddler running around the house there is almost always chance for video gold and the phone is always nearby.
Thanks.

Running evervolv 2.2.1a3 now and have just switched from MIUI v4.
You cant go wrong with either rom. I will say evervolv is running much smother for me than miui did. Video works better too. But you can beat the theming with miui. Though I hear that is broken on the latest port.

I'd reply in the development forum, but xda-developers hate their users and I can't...
The main problem with the kang CM10 rom right now is the same problem they fixed in CM9, found here: epiccm.blogspot.com/2012/01/cm9-longterm-testing-is-showing-android.html (again, if xda-developers didn't hate their users, I could post a link).
If you can find a way to not use any RAM, its great! Once you open 2 or more apps, the system chugs for ~5 minutes each time you need a bit more RAM.
No. They just don't want any idiot or spammer posting in development. You need 10 contributing posts.

As others have said, I would wait. I tried the CM10 kang from the other day (not paranoid android version) and it just didn't feel "complete," likely because it isn't. Oddly enough I figured while I was wiping I would go back to TPR and am now enjoying superb battery life that I forgot I ever had while using ICS.

Note quite "flawless" I'd say... there's still the camera focus problem, bluetooth problem, etc.
RC2 bugs follow.
Auto flash only works if you toggle flash on/auto after each reboot, no LED for video, video MMS messages do not work, slideshows for MMS do not work, Bluetooth will not connect or end calls with screen off and will often disconnect/reconnect at random times, WiFi sleeps regardless of set policy.
Everything else works fine.

As far as i know, every JB Rom uses CM/FXP Sources, especially, they all use CM/FXP Kernel(Sources).
If CM10 has got a bug "X", al other FXP roms do have this bug too!
I would go for CM/FXP, it is fast developing and gets weekly updates.
When i remember coorectly, Sony(Ericsson) used to support them with devices and libs, but i am not 100% sure about that.

It should be stated in the OP's of the thread's what works and what doesn't along with any other tweaks or mods that are included, and you should be reading through or at least reading the last few pages of the threads to see if there are any common issues that might affect you using a ROM or a Kernel for daily use, so it's up to you and you only to decide which you wanna choose, and that's what makes these kind of threads so annoying.

AOKP is my choice, though it still has a few bugs. Anw, I love it because of its amazing smoothness. You also have tons of tools integrated in this ROM to customize your UI. So, give it a try, mate :good:
I personally am using AOXP on my Arc S right now and it seems to be working just fine. It's pretty stable, though I have to admit that it was the customizability that drew me in the most. However, like what some of the other members here are saying, you should check out the logs yourself as they would provide more concrete facts as compared to personal opinions. In addition, I'd recommend you try out various ROMs yourself and figure out which ones you like best. After all, everyone has different tastes.

Just stick to CM9 till a more stable release for CM10 is out. If you have trouble with permissions, go to recovery and use fix permissions.
Don't get me wrong. That's just my opinion... You can use CM10 if you like. For music player, use Google Play Music.

All the ROM for this device are almost the same, all ics/jb roms are basead on arco's source, which means that there are no significant difference in battery/performance/bugs between them, the only difference is the mods, apps (removed or moded), and a few tweaks.
Pick the rom you like the most, if you want a clean rom and you don't care about those mods just pick CM9 or CM10, I would go for cm10, it's stable enough for daily use.

Yes, normal stock JB is better than stock ICS but we are talking about an ICS ROM that has RC stage while the JB is only at its alpha stage. The tweaks and 'project butter' smoothness will not be at its... Full power? Just saying. Not bias to any ROM at all. Different people have different opinions.

But its me... And in the end all the options back to you...
Sorry for my bad english...
If you ask me what is the best ROM in W. Then I would say: Nothing.
What's the best for me maybe its not the same for someone else. Maybe someone said: 'Ah CM10 FTW!!!' but then someone else argued: 'No!! CM9 is better blah blah blah'. And someone else said SlimBean 4.2 is da best.. e.t.c. And you know what will happen next.
If you want to ask what is the best ROM, ask it yourself. Try any ROM and Mods that might fit your requirements. (And expectation, of course)

But if you don't satisfy enough, and i don't know what will make you satisfy, just make your own rom.

OK first of all cool down a little bit. Everybody has different needs and what maybe stable for you might not be stable for somebody else. For me I had reboot issues for a very long time with CM9 but so many did not. But with the latest releases, bugs that bothered me disappeared.
And don't blame people for searching alternatives to satisfy their needs. And not everybody has development skills to built roms.
Sometimes I don't get you people. CM is not a religion and arco is not a prophet. I don't get why you people are so serious.
I am grateful that ARCO developed CM for us and I can't thank him enough. But gee it is just a phone and a ROM.
My suggestion to you is to CHILL...
I don't think ARCO needs your protection and his work speaks for itself.

Okey, sorry about that. Not that arco is a prophet, not at all. But i don't get it why people can't be grateful for what they got. Sorry for burst out. I just a little mad at that time.

No, Arco is no prophet, just human like you and me. There you are right. He is a very smart guy who deserves a lot of thanks for porting CM9 to this device.
You just must understand many people are really really very thankful to him and sometimes overstating by threating him like a god.
I for myself also do not understand why CM9 isn´t working stable for you. It´s a really stable rom. Way more stable than Samsungs stock ROMs. With these I had always random reboots. That´s not the case since using Arcos CM9. Maybe it´s some apps you are using or your SDCard causing this.
Ok, but to be honest regarding stability in the final release I can´t tell. I was using RC2 with it´s older kernel till now because of the battery drain. it was running absolutely stable for me without any issues plus it gave me a awesome battery life, so I compiled my own kernel where i reduced it further. So if you are not satisfied with the final, you can try RC2 or RC3 together with my kernel. It gives way better battery life than Samsungs stock ROM will ever offer you.
However I updated last night to the final release and the battery drain appears to be the same like using Arcos CM9 RC2 with its stock kernel. So if the results will satisfy me, I will stay with the final and build a new personal kernel for it.

I didn't say I don't like his work. I totally respect him and his work, cause his work is really awesome. But it still don't satisying my needs. I need only something faster then the stock rom and something that doesn't drain my battery out.
So if anyone could reccomend me somethin to use I would be very grateful. And BIG RESPECT for arco's work!

Most of the latest ROMs are based on ARCO's CM versions and I believe they will perform on the same level. However some of them may have some extra customizations to improve battery and performance etc. You may want to check their threads and see their features. Also there are some custom ROMs based on stock Samsung Roms. (Gingerbread) Like FAW, rebel etc. They may have custom kernels to speed up the phone.
When was the last time you tried CM9? Because as @honeyx noted, the latest version does seem to have good battery performance and stability.

Now I'm using the cm 9 rc 9. I didn't try the final release yet. Because I'm bored to pristine every time my phone. I will try it. But I don't mind if the rom's are based on CM. I just want any rom that is more fluid than the rom stock and that doesn't drain my battery. And which one would someone of you reccomend me. Anyway I will try the last version of CM9!

As I already told you, try the final and if that doesn´t satisfy you regarding battery life, try the older RC2 or RC3. If one of these gives you better results, you can also try my kernel for them.

hey honeyx, will you develop a custom kernel for EOL version since it is equally good in terms of battery and stability?

I think so, but I will focus on reducing the consumption further than adding a lot of governors. But this will require a lot of testing before launching it. Currently I´m testing the newer 3.0.81 kernel to which Arco updated his sources after launching the final release. This new kernel just has some changes in memory management like the latest kernel for CM10.1 where some people reported to get hangs. So I just added the lulzactive governor, incrased ram and reduced the voltages to first check it´s stability, but so far I didn´t get any hangs and freezes in games.
I´m really anal about stability and consumption and only will release a kernel that is working rock solid for me.
