[Q] is android slow in wifi? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

So today at my highschool I got the password to their wifi. First thing I did was download some roms of from here and my friend has an iphone we both downloaded a file that is 300mb and his was about 2MB/s while mine was stuck at 100kbps/s. Any reason to this ? Any way to fix this?

What was your download source? Lots, but not all, file hosts throttle speeds way down.
You're better off using a speed test website (not an app) to compare to an iphone.

It was mediafire his iphone is jailbroken and he just downloads any file really fast.compared to me.

Also my wifi disconnects every while and his just stays on all day.

No problem wit the wifi speed on android.. May be he is using some app to increase the speed.. Try to chek the net speed next Tim.

I checked once again right now and he isnt using anything and still getting 2 to 3 mbps on download while im getting 100 to 200kbps
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

It may be your settings. In advanced wifi menu is it set to Always stay connected? If not it may turn off during deep sleep.
Also, I've heard of lots of corporate type networks (schools included) where android just didn't didn't work as well as other systems. I'm not sure why though. Its possibke that his is connecting using N standard and you're connecting using G....just a thought.
Try doing the same tests from your home or other open network and see if your results change. I consistantly get 15-20Mbps down and 3-4Mbps up with peaks up to 30 down 6 up. So I certainly wouldn't call it slow! (Mid signal btw).
I can get faster when I'm connected at 5Ghz, 40Mhz.

Those low speeds are not the norm. Try downloading something from another source. Your friend may have a mediafire account which will unthrottle the download speeds

Same at my home my bro has an ipod touch and I tested yesterday and got 200kbps - 300kbps on my s3 and he got 1.5mb im not using the speedtest app im just measuring how fast the downloads go. Is this an android problem because I have an evo 3d and the same thing happens as well

No issues for me. WiFi connects to our home n router and my schools WiFi no issues. Very fast at my school and same speed on my home router. Not to mention when browsing home computer files and downloading speeds reach to 5 megabytes a second. I'd say hardware issue. Not really sure what else it could be. Doc already said everything else

Try using a different server. I had the same issue in Long Island, NY, the server is located in Fire Island, NY. When I chose the server in New York City, the test yielded much better results.

I wish I had some speeds like that. I have to rely on wireless at home. But where I live, I deal with these speeds....

I get about 1.2 mbs up average and about the same down. I am on stock unrooted GB. I am about 45 mins outside of Rochester NY.

If you're rooted, download shoot me from the market. If not, you are able to do a screen shot with with adb

EDIT: I've used Open Garden tether to play World of Tanks on my PC using my phone's 3G connection and although my home internet wifi is 10 times faster it played smooth and lag-free.
EDIT x2: Thanks for the tip about Shoot Me.

If youre running cm7 theres a native screen capture. just hold down power button when you are at a point that you want to take a screenshot and its the fourth option down.

My phone is a weapon - It jams Wifi

I was working with a coworker, and he noticed something strange. So we started doing tests and realized that my T989D jams wifi within 20 feet of it.
Heres the test setup
Multiple Wifi Networks:
WorkWifi(Linksys router)
Hotspot created by an iPhone
Devices used for speed tests
macbook pro(his)
MSI GT60(mine)
iPhone(when not acting as hotspot)
We ran speedtest.net tests, which shows average speeds, but ALSO, shows a graph with where speeds fluctuate.
Scenario One - My laptop is tethered via wifi hotspot to my phone
His laptop is on the WorkWifi
He first noticed, that while my laptop was rebooting, his FTP file transfer speeds went from around 30kb to 2mbit/second. When my laptop started, it went back down. Then we started running tests. Side by side speed tests(remember, hes on a different wifi network so its not about lack of bandwidth). Every time my laptop was downloading over the wifi to my phone then to 4g, his speedtest graph showed a DROP, a huge drop, then when it was done, his sped back up.
Second Scenario:
His iPhone tethered via wifi to my phone. His laptop and my laptop doing speed tests on WorkWifi. While his iphone was downloading, both of our laptops saw a HUGE dip(well below what is available on the work Wifi)
Third Scenario:
iPhone, both laptops on Work wifi
My phone on Workwifi, doing speedtest itself with the app.
All other devices slow to a crawl while my phone downloads.
Has anyone else noticed any strange wifi behavior around their phone?
there is an app in android market called "WiFi Kill" that does that intentionally
however in your case, it's rather un-intented, so perhaps some borked ROM with WiFi settings?
try a full wipe and flash a ROM again do another clean wipe before booting into the OS
do not restore any backup, it should not causes any more problem after you join the WiFi at this point
There is also an app called network spoofer.. I don't think it's in the market but it's a free download able apk.. It's basically an app for trolls that messes with people on the same network as you.. My favorite is the YouTube Rick roll.. F***ing hilarious! You'll know what I mean if you try it

I'm gonna say the WiFi tethering is using the same frequencies as the other WiFi networks causing loss of packets in the communication through the air. Happens to me when we use the cordless phones which operate at 2.4GHz.

Change what channel the router is running on.....default is usually 6.....put on 1 or 12

On a side note wireless telephones can cause this (most run on a 2.4 ghz frequency, just like wifi!! ). 6 1 and 11 are common in the US. Try the things inbetween .

Giggles I guess. OP doesn't want it its a problem for him.
I did it to get off early from work one day (we can't operate without our wifi because our tech guy is too lazy to run the wires.)

1,6 and 11 are popular because they are isolated from one another, all the other ch's overlap. If you put your router on a channel in between you are now getting interference from 2ch's not just one.

Data speeds fast on fresh rom.

When are our phones going to get the 4G lte upgrade?
Now that you're done gut laughing, how come when I flash a rom with a full wipe, my data speeds will be awesome even on 3g, but then later on that day or maybe the next day or so, the speeds just turn right back into the slow ass normal sprint crappy speeds? Anyone else notice this at all? Are there any logical reasons for this? It's so extreme I would almost call it throttling my speeds cause its so significant. It will happen at my house or at work where I know it's not just the change in location that affects the speed. Will go from restoring all my apps in next to no time, to barely downloading a <1 mb app update in less than 5 to 6 minutes.
I notice it on any rom really as long as I do a full wipe. Aosp or tw, it doesn't matter ether or.
And upon searching the web for this issue I found people asking quite frequently about lte on our phones and found it quite comical.
Thanks for any info!

Maybe it's dependant on the time that you're using said data? I imagine it'd be slower with more people on, and peak times should be at 8pm+
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Anyone else notice that on large file downloads on 4g, after a few minutes you get throttled to 3g speeds? This includes YouTube and large apps on the play store. And once it's done, the speeds go back to normal.

Problem with data usage Tmobile Note 3

So I've had the note 3 for 1 week now. I have the unlimited everything plan and 2.5 gb of data. I have yet to activate my hot spot and yet when I check my usage for hot spot, its at 100 mb, and it keeps going up! Am I missing something here?
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Actually I noticed what app is using my hot spot data. Team speak for android is using my hot spot data, even though my hot spot is off. Anyone know what the deal is with this?

I have the same plan and my tethering MB is also creeping up on its own. 48 MB so far and I haven't even turned it on.

Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Not seeing the same. Tethering shows 10.8MB which is when I tested it. Hasn't moved since.
It's the way T-Mobile monitors data. If you view a website in desktop mode on chrome it uses hot spot data.

I was on the stock rooted rom and my dl speed was great but when I flashed over the jedi rom my speeds died down drastically. .. I noticed that in the rom it says it has network speed tweaks but not sure how to find them or apply them please help

Wow, thats some BS right there! Maybe something to do with people having to use chrome to use hotspot without paying for it? That's my guess.

Are you having similar problems with your note 3?

My note 3 is still right out of the box, (my second I should mention I returned the 1st) first thing I noticed was the buggy god it wouldn't lock on and stick, it would just jump around my general area. Second is the LTE speed, now before the note 3 I got the s4 and on a torrent download I would get 2.2mbs my note 3 highest speed on the same torrent wasn't able to get above 1.1 mbp (this is with full LTE network bars NOT 4G ((with out LTE that u sometimes get)).) Wondering if you all had the same issues

some people have had these problems from what i've seen in the forums.
I myself had a buggy gps which fixed after i flashed darkstalker rom
I havn't checked on the Torrent problem in a while but i think it was unresolved and some people just get slow speeds with torrents only.
My cousin also had this problem so we went to a shop and let the tech fix it. He's afraid to fix it by himself hehe
None of my Samsung phones have had great gps.

Also I Keep getting a notification about how an application has close because it tried to access system I even call tmobile telling them about the issue and they're going to have one of their engineers take a look into it we'll see how that goes

Torrent downloading is different at different times, depends on the ratio, if you're complaining about 1.1mb download speed, then you should kill yourself
I have weaker signal than my note 2-
and buggy gps... it likes to just make the icon disappear and then 10 seconds later comes back sometimes it does it over and over and over others it decides to work...

You must be retarded the exact same torrent on the exact same network in the exact same location on the exact time of day with the exact type of service bars and one is going twice as fast as the other ? And no I'm complaining about paying 700 bucks for a phone and 200 bucks for a network that isn't working right and not giving me the speeds I want so no I won't kill my self I'd think any one would do the same and try to correct the issue

Just to to enlighten your moronic retarded self, torrents speeds do with alot more then "ratio" there are legions of factors that effect torrent speed and iv tweaked all of them and still a torrent with 10000 seeds and 500 leaches won't go above 20kbps now while my s4 and s3 are going well above 1.1 mbps there is something wrong with the note 3 I simple want to know if there is a way to fix it
