I was working with a coworker, and he noticed something strange. So we started doing tests and realized that my T989D jams wifi within 20 feet of it.
Heres the test setup
Multiple Wifi Networks:
WorkWifi(Linksys router)
Hotspot created by an iPhone
Devices used for speed tests
macbook pro(his)
MSI GT60(mine)
iPhone(when not acting as hotspot)
We ran speedtest.net tests, which shows average speeds, but ALSO, shows a graph with where speeds fluctuate.
Scenario One - My laptop is tethered via wifi hotspot to my phone
His laptop is on the WorkWifi
He first noticed, that while my laptop was rebooting, his FTP file transfer speeds went from around 30kb to 2mbit/second. When my laptop started, it went back down. Then we started running tests. Side by side speed tests(remember, hes on a different wifi network so its not about lack of bandwidth). Every time my laptop was downloading over the wifi to my phone then to 4g, his speedtest graph showed a DROP, a huge drop, then when it was done, his sped back up.
Second Scenario:
His iPhone tethered via wifi to my phone. His laptop and my laptop doing speed tests on WorkWifi. While his iphone was downloading, both of our laptops saw a HUGE dip(well below what is available on the work Wifi)
Third Scenario:
iPhone, both laptops on Work wifi
My phone on Workwifi, doing speedtest itself with the app.
All other devices slow to a crawl while my phone downloads.
Has anyone else noticed any strange wifi behavior around their phone?
there is an app in android market called "WiFi Kill" that does that intentionally
however in your case, it's rather un-intented, so perhaps some borked ROM with WiFi settings?
try a full wipe and flash a ROM again do another clean wipe before booting into the OS
do not restore any backup, it should not causes any more problem after you join the WiFi at this point
There is also an app called network spoofer.. I don't think it's in the market but it's a free download able apk.. It's basically an app for trolls that messes with people on the same network as you.. My favorite is the YouTube Rick roll.. F***ing hilarious! You'll know what I mean if you try it

I'm gonna say the WiFi tethering is using the same frequencies as the other WiFi networks causing loss of packets in the communication through the air. Happens to me when we use the cordless phones which operate at 2.4GHz.

On a side note wireless telephones can cause this (most run on a 2.4 ghz frequency, just like wifi!! ). 6 1 and 11 are common in the US. Try the things inbetween .

1,6 and 11 are popular because they are isolated from one another, all the other ch's overlap. If you put your router on a channel in between you are now getting interference from 2ch's not just one.

Maybe there is some kind of outage where you live?
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA Premium App
Yeah what above said. I get 2 bars avg in my house and get about 800kbps, 4 bars I get 1mbps, They may be working on the towers out there also
Any chance you might have given them reason to throttle you data connection down?
I also experience dramatic drops in data speeds at peak times and it is location specific where I live. At 2300 in my neighborhood I get great speeds, but at the same time at work (which is full of people still awake and likely using their network) I get really bogged down.
Either a possible factor?

I think the reason why people get horrible speeds at work is because there is probably too much electronic interference.
But then again, when someone says "work" I imagine someone sitting in a cubicle.

Interesting, 4 bars at my place equals 1.5 to 2.5 mpbs and 1 bar equals around 7-800 kbps.

besides the "3G hack" is there anyway to prevent from being throttled on a non rooted 2.3.3 dinc2?
I was under the impression that even with the hack you can get throttled
But I also understand you need to be using GBs/month to make that happen. Most people would have a hard time getting there.
I stream Pandora ALL the time, and I usually get between 1 and 2 GBs of useage. I'm also using my phone for most of my internet browsing.

There's a lot of things that will influence your throughput. Signal strength is only one of a few. Signal quality and available bandwidth will also influence it. A strong signal with a bit of noise will cause problems.
Try *228 option 2, then reboot, and see if it helps.

Verizon is cracking the whip on "free" tethering. I read in an article that it can be tracked if your phone is on gingerbread. I'm not sure, maybe one of the devs could weigh in, but I read there was code written into GB to help them track it. If I can find the article, I'll link it.

So today at my highschool I got the password to their wifi. First thing I did was download some roms of from here and my friend has an iphone we both downloaded a file that is 300mb and his was about 2MB/s while mine was stuck at 100kbps/s. Any reason to this ? Any way to fix this?
What was your download source? Lots, but not all, file hosts throttle speeds way down.
You're better off using a speed test website (not an app) to compare to an iphone.

It was mediafire his iphone is jailbroken and he just downloads any file really fast.compared to me.

Also my wifi disconnects every while and his just stays on all day.

No problem wit the wifi speed on android.. May be he is using some app to increase the speed.. Try to chek the net speed next Tim.
I checked once again right now and he isnt using anything and still getting 2 to 3 mbps on download while im getting 100 to 200kbps
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
It may be your settings. In advanced wifi menu is it set to Always stay connected? If not it may turn off during deep sleep.
Also, I've heard of lots of corporate type networks (schools included) where android just didn't didn't work as well as other systems. I'm not sure why though. Its possibke that his is connecting using N standard and you're connecting using G....just a thought.
Try doing the same tests from your home or other open network and see if your results change. I consistantly get 15-20Mbps down and 3-4Mbps up with peaks up to 30 down 6 up. So I certainly wouldn't call it slow! (Mid signal btw).
I can get faster when I'm connected at 5Ghz, 40Mhz.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Those low speeds are not the norm. Try downloading something from another source. Your friend may have a mediafire account which will unthrottle the download speeds

Torrent downloading is different at different times, depends on the ratio, if you're complaining about 1.1mb download speed, then you should kill yourself

Hey guys, in hoping that someone can help as I'm pulling my hair out over this.
I just got my M8 a couple of days ago.but am experiencing problems with the Wi-Fi download speeds. I've got a 30meg connection at home which is working perfectly fine (I have tested this by running speed tests from multiple devices, including my old HTC One X and my partner's Xperia Z) and they all do the test at maximum speed. The problem is that my new M8 gets results of between 3 and 5mbps on the same speed test (By Ookla). I have not changed any of the settings and don't have any power management apps or anything that's likely to do this.
If I disconnect and reconnect to my router, the speed test results get the expected download speeds for a short while, but then return to the slow ones.
Any ideas??

I would try someone else's router before saying it's your phone. Also try different server on speedtest. Maybe there is something with your specific router that doesn't get along with the n_ac chip in your phone. Mine pulls 88mbit on my 105mb line. I have 2 year old airport extreme. It actually didn't work well in the past with my gs4 but a firmware update fixed it.

Hi @clockwork.satan
I'm in the same boat as you but with a different device (Sony Xperia Z Ultra GPE)
The speed is around 30Mbps on my desktop but only 3Mbps on my device.
The thing is, that this happens at home not on other routers I tried. So my conclusion is that it's something in the router.
You should try it too, test your connection on someone else's router to exclude the device from being the problem.

I've managed to sort this by enabling 5 GHz frequency on my router then connecting the phone to the 5 GHz frequency. I had disabled it a while ago for some reason and thought id give it a go. My WiFi speeds on the phone were 0.8 to 3 on the 2.4 GHz and are now averaging 90Mbps!! Download.
Same Issue!
Ive been having the exact same issue for months now. Swapped routers, changed channel and frequency. Tried different networks (work, home, friends, mobile hotspots) and factory reset twice. Nothing works. It is definitely the M8 with an issue but I can't pinpoint why. The only thing that works is disabling WiFi on the M8 and re-establishing a connection but this works for a whole of about 30 seconds before my speed drops again. I've resorted to sticking to 4g until a solution is found. Someone surely has to have an answer.
I'm having the same issue. Anybody else have any advice.
I thought I'd add I am having the same issue with my M8 I just got the other day. Download speeds won't break about 2Mbps!!! Upload sppeds seem unaffected (but they are slow anyways here @ 4Mbps) All my other phones/pcs would run about 32-33Mbps on wireless via my 35Mbps connection, including my old M8.
I noticed if I turn airplane mode on and then off, the download speeds return to normal for a short while, then revert to the 2Mbps downloads I have tried factory reset of both router and phone. Clearing cache on phone, etc, to no avail... I am running Android 6.0 (6.13.631.7)
I'd love to figure this out. This phone is mint that I got and this is the only issue, so would hate to get rid of it due to this...
Should I just ask here or make my own thread on this?
LOL
It's not the phone. Download speeds shown in speedtest are just for the potential. There are still the upload speeds to deal with from where you are downloading from. 2mbps are normal.
Do this:
Go to a torrent site on you PC/laptop and download a movie that has a lot of seeders. (or download something from pretty much anywhere you feel like downloading from)
Check the download speeds. If you are getting 30mbps, then it is a miracle! Chances are it'll be around 2mbps at its peak.

Every phone I've owned in the past few years (including my old M8) has shown the same speeds for wifi (35/5 connection shows about 32-33/4). It's the phone.
