I installed WiFi Tether for root users on my rooted Sprint SGS3. Based on what I read online I set the device profile to Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE).
I was able to connect to it from my laptop the first time and it worked. I tried to use it a few days later with my Transformer Prime tablet and it was unable to see the network broadcast from my phone. After many attempts at stopping and starting it and restarting WiFi on the tablet it eventually got connected.
Since then I have not been able to get any device to see the network created by WiFi Tether (3.2-beta2). I tried changing various settings (device profile, SSID, channel, enable routing fix option) and nothing got it to show up. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Phone:
Samsung Galaxy S3 for Sprint (rooted and stock rom)
Baseband L710VPLG8
Kernel 3.0.8-906128-user
Build IMM76D-L710PALG8
Hardware version: L710.14
Tablet:
Asus Transformer Prime with stock software up to date.
Laptop is a HP Windows 7 laptop with an Intel branded a/b/g wireless adapter built in.
I am able to make this version work but I selected the Samsung Galaxy S3 profile.
That is one of the device profiles I tried without success. I have read that others had similar problems but they were resolved by using the Nexus CDMA/LTE profile.
Is there another app or version of WiFi tether that works more reliably on this phone? Does this feature work reliably using a particular custom ROM?
I used the Nexus CDMA/LTE profile on an earlier version of this app (before they had a profile for the S3) and it worked, but not always. I have not had a problem with this version (3.2 beta2) with the S3 profile. I am using this on the Rooted stock LI3. I have heard that there are other apps but I have not tried them.
I used Triangle Away to reset the counter and the issue was minimized(less start and stops) to make it broadcast.
It shows like if the counter is modified the phone don't let you broadcast well.
I owe you the link to Triangle Away. But you can try. It works for me.

So just rooted, and downloaded the wireless tether. But for some reason I can't get the ipad to get full ip connection. It connects, just not completely. Anyone else have this issue before?

Guess android and apple don't like messing with each other, lol (just had to put that in)...
But down to your question, have you try connecting a different device to see if you can connect? With your wireless tether on try connecting, like a laptop or other wireless device to see if you can connect. This will give you a better idea Of what's going on.
Did you change any settings for wireless tether?

I had the same issue with my iPod touch. I rooted and tried tethering on the stock rom and had the problem you had. I'm not sure if it was after I flashed a new kernel or a kernel and Fresh 3.2, but the next time I tried it, it worked perfectly. Maybe think about trying a new rom? Not sure of the actual problem.

I've never been able to connect a mobile phone via tether. Never tried an iPad though.

I am running Fresh 3.3.0.1 and my friends Ipad connects to it and works fine. I am using version 2.0.5-pre9 of wireless tether.
i know version 8 wont work with my apple stuff. version 7 works with ipad iphone i know. apparelntly so does 9
I'm running the Fresh 3.3 ROM with wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre9 and it works fine with my iPad.
I had a similar problem when I got Wireless Tether. It wouldn't fully connect to anything (win 7, ubuntu, droid 2.1, iphone or macbook) although the devices said they were at least partially connected (except the droid never could see it). Turns out the Wireless Tether app in the marketplace is old/doesn't work for the EVO/Froyo - or something.
Go here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
And download the latest version (pre9 at the top - after you've uninstalled the old version) and it should work. At least it did for me.
Im running Fresh 3.3.0.1 and the last Wifi Tether that I've downloaded and reinstalled I don't know how many times.
At some point the iPad was working great but all of the sudden it just stopped working.
My blackberry connects to the EVO without a problem.
The ipad connects and disconnects or it just spins while trying to connect even tho the phone says its connected.
Any ideas or any other wifi tethering apps suggestions?
Thanks.
I just rooted my stock EVO running Froyo, and installed wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre9. Although it seems to run fine, and my iPad connects, it can't connect to the Internet. Seems to be a common problem, as there are several people complaining.

Hmm...
I asked my buddy with an iPhone 4 to try and connect the other day and it worked just fine.
Granted, iPhone and iPad are not the same thing, so take that for what it is. Just saying.
I have an iPad and I run CM6+Snap and if you use CM6 DO NOT use Wireless Tether, use it's built in hotspot ability. If you use fresh. I never had a problem using the included version of Wifi Tether.
On stock rooted. Hard to say. I only very briefly use stock rom's. I would guess fresh/etc. make other adjustments to fine tune but not sure.
I do know there is nothing hardware-related that prevent an ipad from seeing android tethering.
One tip I've read about, try using Channel 1.
It does seem to be the best for maintaining connection when experiencing repeated drops.
I've connected to my 2 grandkids' Touchs (or is that touches .. lmao) but best results on ch.1
cheers
i have rooted my phone earlier today using unrevoked 3 and i have install the new version of wireless tether - pre 10 and although it shows my htc evos connection as local or limited connection on my computer, i have yet to gain internet access. it shows limited connectivity and doesnt allow me to go online. i am confused and give up.
yes must agree about channel 1 on on wifi tether. I have iPad ios4.2 beta 2 running on my hook to my evo using standard stock rom 2.2 rooted. Using pre8 edition wifi tether, sometimes starting connection would not connect right away. I suggest toggle wifi-tether on and off about 2 times and give the iPad time to connect, one more thing could try on iPad is utilize forget this network if applicable and see if that helps! Hope all works out okay for you.

This suggestion seems to have done the trick (toggling). I tried to connect using my old HTC Fuze and had no luck with that either. So I guess that puts doubt that the issue is client side.
I then turned WT off and back on. Lo and behold my Fuze was able to surf. Did the same with my WiFi only iPad.
I'm using the Pre9 version on my HTC stock 2.2 (rooted).
I couldnt get my evo to wifi to my ipad until I install wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre7.
Tried pre11,pre9 and it wouldnt work. As soon as I launched this the ipad connected right away.
Ok.. please excuse the ignorance about anything tethering lol... but can I connect my rooted evo to the Tmobile Samsung Galaxy tab?... and, obviously access theyre hspa+ network?
Thank you.
Yes I used the Search feature, still no satisfactory resoultion...
I have rooted several phones over the past few weeks (with different bootloaders), Evo 4Gs, one tethers, one doesn't, Droid RAZRs, both tether, Droid 3s, neither tether (I read the TBH thread, so...), E4GT neither tether (mine included but am running Phantom's Rom so no worries there).
I am at my wits end. The apk(s) used to work before, but as of late I am not having any success at all. Android Tether lists in my networks, my pc and laptop will connect, internet access is detected, they connect but NONE of my browsers are able to connect.
I never had this problem, never had to change any settings in the apk(s), and never had to change my pc(s) configuration. Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone know what is going on?

Try FoxFi, free at Google Play. I had issues tethering E4GT. This app works great for Samsung & Motorola. All others, maybe Bluetooth.

Wifi Tether (Im using 3.1 beta11 pulled from Calk's ICS roms) works if you change the device profile to "Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)". I always enable the access control and allow the pc accessing.
The hacked sprint hotspot has always worked for me on gingerbread as well i prefer it but use the other atm on ICS.
Wifi Tether wont work properly until you change it to thet CDMA/LTE Nexus it gives the same issue you describe without the change.

Ok but what are you running ICS or GB because there is an answer to both.... If you are rooted the stock wifi tether works fine so can we have a little more info although the answers you have gotten so far a pretty damn good.
Thanks
I switched to my Nexus S 4G to give the ICS ROMS a spin and really loved it but missed my E4GT so I recently switched back. I am currently on Phantom's EL26 (Gingerbread) from way back when. I found that the EL 26 modem gives me the best battery life by far and I like the debloated stock because I am running SPB SHELL 3D launcher (cracked-pm me).
I have so many Google Wifi Tether apks on my pc and dug up the wifi_tether_v3_1-pre101.apk and changed the channel to 6. It works now.
The Sprint Hotspot comes fully functional on the ROM that I am on but it was really bugging me that I couldn't get the google wifi tether to work on friends' and family's phones. There must be a bug in the newest release or something.
FIFOX said that HTC has a block on wifi tether when I tried to install it on my friend's Evo 4G.
I am going to use the TBH thread to change the radio strings on my friend's Droid 3 so he can tether. We'll see how that goes later today.
-worked like a charm; rewrote the strings with RadioCom and changed the entitleent with sqlite editor, using the most recent google wifi tether apk on chanel 6.
Thanks for all the input. I'm gonna hit the thanks button for you all.
PEACE!
My wife's just got a tablet so wants to get it connected via her Wildfire.
We tried turning it on last night but it's not working properly - the hotspot functionality itself seems be enabled properly, but in Wireless and Networks, the text under the 'Mobile network' option keeps cycling between 'Connected' and 'Use phone for data connection...'.
The text 'Wi-Fi hotspot active' keeps appearing and disappearing from the notification area.
We appear to be able to successfully connect the tablet via wifi to the Wildfire but there's no internet access.
The handset is completely stock and unbranded (Froyo, build 2.22.405.1). Internet access in general is fine and my wife's data plan specifically allows tethering (GiffGaff UK, using a Gigabag).
Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a way around this? Am willing to start rooting and flashing other ROMs if it will solve the problem.
for tethering try the Barnacle wifi tethter app from market - works for me
I'll give that a try when I get home and report back here.
Have you ever tried it using the in-built functionality and either found it to work or not? Considering I've not had problems with my own handsets (previously a Desire, now a Sensation) it seems odd that I can't get it to work on my wife's Wildfire.
I used the built in one on stock rom with no problems at all on 2 wildfires, I used to use all mine then leech from the girlfriends. Could it be a problem with her apn setting? Maybe call customer service and check its set correctly for tethering.
Personally I'd tell her its broke though and flash it like I did the girlfriends purely because I'm a flashaholic!!

Just in case anyone was wondering (or for the benefit of future searchers)... I finally got the Hotspot working after I installed a custom ROM (DK Custom Froyo v4.7 - I didn't want anything too different to Stock).
Custom kernels etc. didn't work (in fact, the one I tried destabilised the handset), neither did other options such as Barnacle on the stock ROM.
Thanks everyone for trying.
Gsm Gnex running AOKP M5 + Franco M3. Now, I last connected to Wifi this morning at 8 am. I come home, try to connect, and nothing. Forget network, reconnect, enter password, and nothing. Just says "Saved, Secured with WPA/WPA2".
Tried reflashing the kernel, still nothing, suggestions please?

EDIT: Figured out the fix! This "bug" in mobile devices (not just Android, but read about iOS and BB products as well) come from not being able to connect to a SECURED network. As in, one with WEP, WPA2, etc for security. Now, this doesn't mean you have to unsecure your network forever so you can connect, but rather temporary.
1) Turn off network security, and make the router entry open.
2) Connect to it via your mobile device, make sure data works, then delete connection. Turn off device as well.
3) Resecure your connection with WPA2 (this is what I used and tested, don't know about other security methods), and type in the same password if you want too.
4) Turn on phone, connect to the network MANUALLY (found that if you did it automatically, it didn't work, ATLEAST for me).
5) Enter credentials, and viola! Should be working fine by now.
Thers 2 kind of kernels in francos app.. Try flashing the other one?
Galaxy Nexus AOKP m5 Franco kernel m3
Worked fine running M3 this morning though, now nothing. What could've changed? I didn't even UV. Should I just reflash everything?

I have the same issue with unofficial CM13 any solution?
I have the Sprint Galaxy S3 and I recently switched to MOAR. It's great but since then I also am unable to find my Chromecast device from my android phone. My laptop can discover and stream to it just fine, as well as two other Android devices (one that is rooted and one that is not). It seems odd to me that this would be the problem, but I didn't make any other changes around the time it happened.
I've tried power-cycling my phone and the router, making sure everything is on the 2.4ghz network, and resetting the Chromecast via the button as well as in chrome. Help? Is there any solution short of changing roms (if that even is the problem)?
Well as an update.. I have since factory reset the phone and Chromecast worked again. Now I am running the Wicked Rom and I can't find the Chromecast again. If this is really a rom problem I wouldn't know why others haven't brought it up. Also, my friend who has a rooted s4 is running Hyperdrive and he was able to connect to the Chromecast so I am just really confused.
It's because your phone is 5mhz instead of the chromecasts only option the 2.4.
