Getting very pissed off at this.. been able to connect to my home wifi and others before.. but for some dumb reason i can't get any good connection from my router that sits three feet away from my device.. everytime it just gets to the "obtaining ip address from " then disconects and tries again.. never getting past to connect.. i currently have reset my router to basic settings and left the network open... i'm running in "g" mode.. channel 6... even with the network running open it still does not connect.. i need help bad..
Droid Incredible 2.2 froyo - Skyraider 3 sense rc2
BaseBand v: 2.15.00.07.28
Kernal v: 2.6.32.15-king#2
Router: Linksys - wrt54g v5 - Firmware: Up to date.
ISP: Comcast xFinity
Thanks for any help..
ok so i changed out the kernal.. went back to using the stock skyraider kernal that i had before i changed to king.. now my wifi is completly broke.. phone does not have mac address anymore.. also want to downgrade my radio back one version.. i noticed my whole wifi connecting issue after going to radio 2.15 or the version before it.. i have been googling around and cannot fin the radio i want, 2.07, or 2.05.. but the fact i lost my mac address form reflashing the kernal blows... anyone know a good way to reinput the mac? or a new flash should fix?
MAC addresses are burned into the hardware so I do not think you lost yours. Try running the code below with the phone booted or in recovery and then flashing another kernel. King's kernels come with a lot of extra modules and they may be causing issues when you flash other kernels and they are left behind. This code will clean them up. This is just a thought. It may help you.
NOTICE: this will render your wifi/hotspot completely useless until you flash another kernel. Also be careful you type in the commands verbatim
While Booted:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
rm -R /system/lib/modules
In Recovery:
Code:
adb shell
mount /system
rm -R /system/lib/modules
had the same problem and i am running the exact same set up. I fixed the problem by reading the xda forum for that rom and he clearly states that you have to uninstall the wireless tether from market and get the lastest versions. the market is not the lastest version. Go to the thread and he has the link posted to the updated wireless tether.
thanks for the feedback guys.. @ihtfp69: i tried reflashing back to the second stock kernal in the kernal list of rom manager.. can't remember the name.. its weird when i goto the advanced options of wifi settings.. it say's "Unknown"..
i'd screen cap it but i am in the process of just restoring the original rom from factory..
@jager420: its really nothing to do with wifi tether is it? i'm trying to access my router to my phone, not wifi tether to the router via repeater...
Thanks again for the help and especially ihtfp for the adb coding..
drocaps.. this is after wiping then doing a nandroid restore of the phone after deboxing and applying root.. the radio never went back.. going to try downgrading the radio.. then try the adb codes as a last shot.. haven't got adb to work correctly in the past.. i keep forgeting to mention that, at first before i lost my MAC, i would get that issue i metion first.. then after i lost the mac, everytime i tried to turn wifi on it would just say "error".. haha..
--
ok so i went back to stock radio and got my MAC address back.. does bluetooth have a MAC address? can't remember.. under blue tooth it says unavailable..
haha nevermind, had to activate it before it showed up.. so my MAC issues are resoved.. now i just need to get it to connect to the damn router so i can get faster speed on my phone when home..
--
ok so from what i could figure.. i went to set the router to broadcast on the 11th channel.. using 2.462GHz.. has no problem connecting.. its running in g-mode also.. i found that when i set the router to defualt channel settings it couldn't pickup an ip.. channels 1-6 proved to be no luck.. thanks again for the help guys..
--
welp. i was connected good for awhile.. using wifi to install apps and stuff after my fresh install of skyraider 3 rc2.. i have wifi sleep at 15 minutes.. i seen wifi went off and back to 3g.. so i tried to reconnect wifi to see if it would work and nope. back to the same issue as before.. stuck at connecting then trying to obtain an ip from router. never gets past the obtain part, just disconects and trys again... looks like i'm back to square one.. could use some help before i go nuts... fixed the system info in op to show whats going on now..
I'm also having the same issue where i cannot connect to my wireless router. Are there any other possible solutions? It's strange because the phone will connect to a neighbors open wireless network but will not connect to mine. It just keeps cycling through and cannot obtain an ip address. Thanks in advance.

what router do you have? make? model?
This thread has been dead for a while, but it's the only one that describes my problem.
I am using the latest Skyraider Athena right now and whichever kernel it comes packaged with.
Until yesterday, I was able to connect to my home wifi network without any problems.
Last night I noticed that it would try to obtain an IP, but fail and try again... over and over again.
I took my phone to work and it connects to my work network fine. It also works on my fiancee's network.
WHAT HAPPENED?
I reset my router and it didn't help. I really need wifi access in my house since I'm in the basement most of the time and I don't get cell signal.
Any ideas? I've thought of renaming my network and changing the password. That's a huge PITA considering the number of devices I would then have to change the settings in.
Please, someone have an answer.

I'm actually having the same exact problem. I'm able to connect to other routers in my building that are open, but for some reason I can not connect to my home router. I'm using a D-Link DL 624 router.
I'm at a loss as to what to do.
also have the same problem here...
device = motorola atrix
when i turn on wifi, it detects my home network and keeps trying to obtain ip address
then it scans agains because it can't connect and tries to obtain the ip again
after trying for a minute or 2, the home ssid becomes:
"disabled, secured with..."
please help
Bump...
This problem is really getting annoying because I can't connect to wifi at home...
Any ideas?

This may seem a little too simple.. but I remember my dad having a similar problem with his EVO. All I had to do is "Forget" the network, reconnect to it, and re-enter the WiFi password. Is it possible you changed the security on your router? Your phone is probably trying to connect with the old password you had before if that's the case.
Good Luck,
xirftwx
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that dindt solve it. It is now connecting to wifi 50% of the time and the other 50% keeps trying to obtain ip

Sounds like an issue with a mismatched Kernal for the ROM your using or just a bug on the ROMs build. Had the same issue with MIUI roms when I first tried flashing kernels. Mine would scan, obtain & connect, and then drop and scan for other connections. What setup are you running?
I am on stock atrix but rooted. Haven't flash anything yet cause I am still learning this rom buisness... could I be having a kernel problem?

Hi!
I modded CM7.1 on U8500 (based on slax's sp3 rom)...
I imported 2.6.29 icarus chaos kernel into it, everythings fine, except on wifi connect had the "obtaining ip address" issue...(it works with static ip) What can i do now? I try everything...modules, permission...
Any idea?
Thx for ur help,

Same problem here with all my android devices....
HTC EVO stock (2.2) did the same thing with rooted 2.1 (unrevoked)
HTC EVO 3D stock (2.3.3)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 stock (3.1)
Happens on my home wireless router as well as work. Sometimes, just sometimes I'll be lucky and it'll connect after multiple tries or reboots of my home router (cant touch the work one).
This has got to be an android issue...right?
guys i wish i could remember what exactly i did to fix it... i haven't had the issue since..
try checking the wifi type? as far as i know, type n is not going to work. i could be wrong.. try b or whatever else floats your boat.. also, it could be the kernal.. i have been using my incredible with cynogen mod 7 and with no problems on the standard kernal.
FIXED:
Apparently the router had a reset button which I just dicovered hidden between the vent gaps, which has a different function than just pulling out the power cord for a minute or so. Now WiFi is working on my phone.
My phone won't connect to a WPA/WPA2 PSK WiFi network. It previously was able to connect (for 2 weeks), but since 6 weeks, it loops: scanning, connecting, disconnected. I have flashed many ROM versions and wiped all phone memory since (mainly for other purposes than this problem), but it still won't connect.
I have tried resetting the router several times without result. I can't access any more settings, because I live with other students in a house where the house-keeper also lives.
The WiFi at my university (802.1x EAP) and the WiFi at my parents house (also WPA/WPA2 PSK) always works properly.
I have searched through the internet and through XDA-forums, but none of the proposed solutions works, can be done on my phone or I am not able to try them because I can't access the router settings.

I'm running stock 2.3.4 with stock kernel. DoomKernel still has problems isn't it? I'll have to live with it till that's fixed. Already tried reverse tethering, maybe that will work.
It's not such a big problem, as I have my laptop near me there, but installing apps is quite a hassle this way (search for .apk, install apk with flashtool or move apk to sd and install).
I don't have a data plan, it's €10/month for 200mb, pointless for me, because there's WiFi at home, at my university and in the train.

When you restoring your phone and after that making setup, then dont log into your google account. Install freshly new rom and directly try connect wifi. If i remember right i had to thiskind problem. And after i realized that problem was "google settings and thatkind stuff backup restore". I just uncheck this option and after that i was abel connect my home wifi. Before that i cant. give a try

I am using recently acquired Xperia Pro. I get very weak wifi signals in my room so i bought a Thomson Wifi Repeater/Access point to extend the wifi signal to my room. My phone is now unable to connect to the wifi and keeps scanning, connecting and disconnecting. It eventually ends up with a Limited Connectivity noticfication meaning i am unable to connect to internet although get full wifi signal strength. I tried changing some IP configurations but it hasn't helped. Interestingly my Notebook PC is able to connect and maintain somewhat stable connectivity, although at times it too gets disconnected from the internet. I tried connecting to the Wifi using an iPhone and it too had the same issues i.e able to detect the wifi signal but unable to connect to internet.
I am still trying to find the solution to the problem and will update if i find a way out.

I suggest that you update both your phone software and the router firmware to latest possible version.
Let me know how it goes.
same problem
I have the same problem on my arc s after i downgraded the official ICS to gengerbread using flashtool i even tried to upgrade back the ICS but the problem hasn't been fixed
Fixed
Try to find setting on your router like "max number of peers" or something like that and change the value to maximum it can, maybe it will tell the maximum number. After that reconnect your phone wifi, and bless me:angel:
Had same wifi diconnect loop problem - solved
I had the same WiFi loop - connect/disconnect issue. Extremely disturbing.
It appeared out of nowhere.
Rebooted the phone and the router several times - no help.
Used WiFi analizer to check for interferring chanels - nothing special.
Changed the WiFi chanel anyhow - no help.
Reinstalled/uninstalled AT&T smart WiFi - no help
Removed my WIFi network ('forget' button) and found it again, including the password - no help.
I have the WiFi manager installed, but I sort of forgot to check it doing everything through settings.
Only then I found that my WiFi Manager is stuck on the update announcement screen.
Okayed it - problem solved.
Funny thing, I don't remember updating the WiFi manager lately.
Feel so stupid wasting 2 hours.
I have problem with my nexus, wifi is connected but I cannot access any internet. Sometimes interet works normal, then suddenly disappears, wifi is connected normal but there isnt internet
I tired wih other android phone, samsung galaxy ace, but same thing
But nokia n8 works normal, this dosnt happening
I do not know of which can be either the router or the phone
I tried to change settings on the phone and the router but nothing
If someone has an idea, I would be grateful to him
I had the same problem on my nexus, while the wifi worked fine on other devices. I flashed several different ROMS, to no avail, and resolved myself to believe that it was a hardware problem. Before flashing back to stock, I reset the Router, just for laughs. Problem solved. Make sure your wifi settings on android are correct, and try resetting your router. It's worth a shot. Which ROM are you on?
i tired several times with reseting router, even change settings, sometimes internet start to work but after 30-40 minuts stops again
i dosnt now what exactly ROM is on phone, becouse i just buy him
Without knowing the ROM, and at the risk of sounding like a tech support douche, maybe you should try a wipe/factory reset.

Hi,
I am new to dealing with the Android OS with my Galaxy Nexus, but I am thinking the same thing. My main concern is backing up and reinstalling all of my information, apps etc. I use Titanium backup pro for my backups but would like to know if my phone will be recognized when I try to reload all of my apps.
Thank you for your reply.

I have WiFi problems at my house. It shows that I am connected but no internet. I know is the router in my case.
I would test your WiFi somewhere else, such as Starbucks or Barnes and Noble.

Hi,
I have connection everywhere - Starbucks, home, Staples, Chapters/Indigo (Barnes and Nobles equivalent in Canada), even borrowing Wifi from unsecured home networks etc. but the disconnect is between the Wifi and getting my Internet to connect. Connection bars are all gray and at home very strong signal showing. This reminds me of connection problems I had with my laptops (running the MS OS of course), but in the Android OS I am a "newbie" and reading forums trying to figure what other people's connection problems are, and how they were solved.
There are no Wifi connection problems using my laptop (now) or my daughter's iPods, my wife's Blackberry Bold at home. My data works find, and I wish there was a roll back feature to the time just prior to the problem occurring last Thursday. My understanding is I have to completely restore my system, and this leads me to more questions about if I can reload all of my apps or if I will have to pay for them again. In the end, it may be faster.
I downloaded - per member recommendation - a Wifi analyzer and it shows that my home Wifi speed is excellent.
Thanks, I am always open to ideas to solve.
Do you know how to find the version of ROM on my Galaxy Nexus? I must look.
Scott

Hello, I've been having a problem with wifi on all new 4.2 roms over the last week or so. For an unknown reason, I can connect with phone data but attempts to get on wifi have been mostly unsuccessful. WiFi just says "obtaining IP address" but eventually times out and starts authenticating again. I have tried wiping everything with 3 different roms and now I'm on Tasks AOKP rom (12/23 with stock kernel) and having the same problem. I've tried all available Canadian modems with the same results (data is best for me on LLH1 though). If I switch back to CM10 (12/16) my wifi works perfectly.
I can get wifi if I mash the on off a few times as it usually causes a force reboot and when it boots I get wifi about 50% of the time. Attempts to modify router settings and reboot my hardware have been futile.
Anyway, I'm hoping one of you is interested enough to peruse the log I saved using "wlan" as a filter. I don't know if that's the best filter but it seemed to show the gist of it. Thank you in advance!

I'm having the same issue task aokp 12/23. Also, if I try to toggle the wifi in the settings screen, it reboots the phone.
However you might try to do this. This morning, I flashed the 12/23 kernal found in task's op. I can toggle wifi on/off now without issue. But i'm not anywhere near wifi to check if it connects.
I found WiFi at target and I'm posting from it. It connected right away.
So, flashing the kernel alone after flashing the ROM, fixed my problem
If you were having the same problem as me, I have to wonder if disconnecting and attempting to reconnect will work.
I downloaded tasks 12/23 underwear kernel, booted to recovery, wiped cache/davlik, flashed only kernel, wiped cache/davlik and rebooted. Tried toggling wifi a dozen times, phone crashed, rebooted, still can't get IP. I imagine that if I play with it long enough I'll get wifi back temporarily, but I use wifi more than data so I'd like it to work better if it can.

Back at home, I can't connect to wifi.
Edit. randomly tried it again, and it connected instantly.
Yeah. I've spent a lot of time troubleshooting router settings (channels, signal type etc) and have thought on several occasions that I had fixed it, but shortly after found that it was a one time connect. I have a spare router in storage that I'm going to try, soon, and that should help me decide if it's a router problem or a JB issue.
Sent from my SGH-I747M on Bell using Tapatalk 2
Well, no need to play with the router I have managed to obtain flawless wifi, but not on Tasks rom. The 12/27 illusion rom works great, but I can't get mobile data working on it. I switched back to tasks with hope that a future update sets the wifi straight.
Sent from my SGH-I747M on Bell using Tapatalk 2
I tried the official CM10.1 12/28 nightly this morning and quickly discovered that wifi was working great. I was able to turn it on/off multiple times and reboot without issue. I flashed a different Canadian modem and reflashed tasks AOKP rom (no kernel, no gapps) and wifi was broken again. That logcat makes me think it's something to do with how the rom is handling DHCP requests, but I'm a noob and hardly know anything about any of this stuff.
A nan restore to my AOKP rom got all my stuff back, but it's takes me a solid 30 minutes to get wifi connected.
Sent from my SGH-I747M on Bell using Tapatalk 2
I updated to tasks AOKP 1/1/13 and my wifi is working perfectly! I considered switching back to 12/12/23 to see if it was the build, but who cares?!
This issue is resolved.

So I have tried to trace my issue to it's roots and after a lot of investigation I decided to make this thread.
The issue:
When connecting to home wifi network I get "Authentication error occurred" even though it's the good password.
It first occurred on stock 4.1.1 ROM with stock Kernel even before rooting. What's more interesting is that I've successfully used the same wifi network for around a month. Other devices connect just fine, no settings on the router changed when this started happening. Didn't fiddle with any settings on the phone neither. I can connect to free wifi APs just fine.
What I've tried:
Dialing *#0011# and from service mode disabling wifi power saving feature.
Using all possible encryption combinations on the router (Open - no password, WEP, WPA-PSK AES and/or TKIP, WPA2-PSK AES and/or TKIP or both WPA and WPA2 at the same time), switching channels, disabling 802.11n mode.
Using some modded wpa_supplicant files from this thread.
Using a bad password just to get a different error.
Downloading some other wifi connectors from the Play Store including Wifi Connection Manager which claims to "Fix device Wi-Fi problems." by cleaning the stored wifi config files and maybe something more.
Flashed Omega v10 ROM with Perseus kernel.
All these things and basically any combinations of them worked to no avail. And the only thing that helped was being very close to the router. That way I manage to connect but moving a couple of meters away, like to a nearby room, and it starts giving the same error even though the network strength is still full at that point.
My thoughts:
I saw a similar issue at a couple of places including a similar thread last active dec 23rd, Android issues on code.google.com and androidforums, but no solutions found there worked. Also comparing how my old original Note and an even older LG P500 perform, the wifi signal is obviously weaker on the Note 2. My area is not heavy on wifi networks, so my guess is there's something wrong with wifi drivers or configuration. Sooooo.... What can I do to remedy this issue and also is there any way to beef up my wifi in the process?

I had somewhat the same issue. Autentication error.Even though WIfi worked properly on my Galaxy y.
From v9, I flashed v6 Omega and then everything was working fine. So go ahead and flash Omega v6.
And after that did you go back to a Jelly Bean ROM?
Edit: at first I figured omega v6 wasn't JB, but then I checked... For the peace on my mind I'll try flashing Omega v6 later today.

When I went to v6, all was working well. But when v10 was released,i flashed it,hopiing that the wifi issue is not there but alas same result.
Before flashing,I made a backup of my wifi folder found in root folder /etc/wifi .
After flashing v10, and overwriting the wifi folder with the one that i had backed up, the issue was solved even on 4.1.2 for me.
Worth a try mate.
Do report back.

Authentication Problem Wifi - solved for me
Hi folks - I had the same issue with my Galaxy Note I717 (it's the AT&T Note 1) that I got yesterday. I have no problem with my T959 Vibrant to connect to my router at all. But the Note always gave me the authentication problem. So I took it with me to work today and no problems at all to connect to Wifi over there - everything just worked fine.
Back at home - same issue. So I was thinking about to reset my router when I saw this button on it's side and I remembered that I had read something in the settings of my phone.
So that's what I did: When choosing the network on the phone I went to advanced settings. WPS - here I choose Push Button. After that I pushed the button on my router and voila everything worked as supposed.
After switching Wifi off and back on there was no authentication problem anymore. So to confirm the whole thing I let the phone forget the connection and I had the same authentication problem. After choosing WPS "push button" and pushing the button on the router everything worked again.
I don't know - maybe it's just basics for a lot of guys here, but I was glad to figure that out by myself and maybe it helps someone else.
In the case that it might be important - my Note runs stock ICS 4.0.4, stock kernel. is rooted and unlocked. The Vibrant runs ICS Passion V13.1 and Kernel Kiss Yum Yum Good #2. The router is a D-Link DIR 655 Wireless N
Following up the thread:
No, flashing omega v6 didn't work for me.
What I found out is actually 5 GHz band routers work just fine (for example at my university) and all the 2.4 GHz ones give the same error if I'm not close enough to them (something like 5 meters with straight visibility and 2 meters behind closed doors with my home router Comtrend WAP 5813n).
I have called Samsung's Warranty Center to ask for assistance and since we don't have official Samsung service centers in Lithuania, they told me partnered service centers might just return the phone to me as it is and so they would call me when they found out more about this issue (that was almost 2 weeks ago). Will call them again tomorrow and will post any updates if the story develops.
EDIT: After talking to them they apologized for taking so long and assured me I was not forgotten and the issue was forwarded to UK because they have no records/info about it here in Lithuania. Strange thing is I still have my phone, they didn't even wanna check it out.
Note 2 wireless issues
Lads I tried EVERYTHING to get connection working after it dropped on me after a month. Done everything I have read on every forum. EVERYTHING. All other Samsung devices work fine except this note 2! One other odd thing I discovered. It connects fine to any modem or roster fine then when try again on each it won't. You tell me guys? I had it with this issue. Help before I chuck it in Port Phillip Bay!
Hello Jumbo,
i had the same problem and read a lot threads about this error message.
For me it looks like not all who get this error have the same problem.
Some wrote that they fixed it by
- exchanging the wifi folder with the one from 4.1.1..
- flashed a different kernel
- downgraded to 4.1.2
- changed wifi energy saving stuff
- messed around with their routers
and so on..
I also did all this stuff but with no success..
In my case I figured out that
- the same problem exist on 3 different routers (so it couldn't be a router issue)
- the wifi speed (when I sometimes got connected) kept falling from 65MBit down to 5MBit
and by having a wifi connection, I couldn't reach any webpage.
- then I recognised, that I only had a working connection, when I was close
to my router, like 1 or 2 meters without anything between us. In this case
I had no problems with authentication and to surf on the web.
I decided to send my Note2 in for a repair, and guess what... They changed my
Mainboard and since then, everything is back to work..
How long did it take for the repair? I can't imagine being without my phone for an extended period....
I know, it's an addiction, but I'm ok with that..
Steve
I have an identical issue with my S3 GT-I9300
For a totally reliable wifi connection, I've had to site the cradle for the phone on top of my router!
Am out of warranty, so if anyone finds a fix for this that does not involve a mainboard change...
(My first post on this site- I just wish it had been a fix rather than a query)

Sorry for the late answer.
My repair took 1 week...
shipped it to w-support on Monday and got it back Saturday.
I was really happy with w-support here in Germany.
I've reset my device to stock and so far it's been sitting @ warranty center for a week, no answer about the roots of the problem yet..
May have found a solution
Hi,
I had the similar problem. With me it started happening after I changed to a Zyxel modem. After some investigation I noticed that in the Zyxel the default gateway is set at 192.168.1.254 whereas most other brands use 192.168.1.1.
Have an inkling that Android doesn't play nice with non-192.168.1.1 gateways.
So changed this in the router settings.
To be sure I also allocated fixed IP on the LAN to my devices and made sure that in the advanced settings of my WiFi network on the Android device I made sure the primary and secondary DNS addresses matched those that the router uses.
Oh.. And to top it all off I fixed the broadcast channel of the router to channel 11 (Probably best you use an app like WiFi Analyser from the Play Store to find the channel that works best for you)
This seems to have solved it for me for now. (I know, not a very scientific method, but got fed up with trying to isolate the culprit)
BTW. Am running (1) Galaxy Note on latest stock ROM (rooted though) (2) Galaxy Tab 2 7" (stock JB ROM - non rooted).
Hope this helps..
Sounds so strange that gateways and channels did it for you. I've tried to change channels on my router with no results. Also I have tried way too many routers before I decided router settings were not a problem. I guess we may have different kind of hardware/software faults resulting in same error message.

I know. It is weird.
Mind you only a few hours have passed since my changes. I'll keep an eye on it if it reverts to it's old state.
Ok.
Had the same issue again this morning, but oddly enough, once it connects, it stays connected. Also when the phone is put to sleep.
