My wife's just got a tablet so wants to get it connected via her Wildfire.
We tried turning it on last night but it's not working properly - the hotspot functionality itself seems be enabled properly, but in Wireless and Networks, the text under the 'Mobile network' option keeps cycling between 'Connected' and 'Use phone for data connection...'.
The text 'Wi-Fi hotspot active' keeps appearing and disappearing from the notification area.
We appear to be able to successfully connect the tablet via wifi to the Wildfire but there's no internet access.
The handset is completely stock and unbranded (Froyo, build 2.22.405.1). Internet access in general is fine and my wife's data plan specifically allows tethering (GiffGaff UK, using a Gigabag).
Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a way around this? Am willing to start rooting and flashing other ROMs if it will solve the problem.
for tethering try the Barnacle wifi tethter app from market - works for me
I'll give that a try when I get home and report back here.
Have you ever tried it using the in-built functionality and either found it to work or not? Considering I've not had problems with my own handsets (previously a Desire, now a Sensation) it seems odd that I can't get it to work on my wife's Wildfire.
I used the built in one on stock rom with no problems at all on 2 wildfires, I used to use all mine then leech from the girlfriends. Could it be a problem with her apn setting? Maybe call customer service and check its set correctly for tethering.
Personally I'd tell her its broke though and flash it like I did the girlfriends purely because I'm a flashaholic!!

Just in case anyone was wondering (or for the benefit of future searchers)... I finally got the Hotspot working after I installed a custom ROM (DK Custom Froyo v4.7 - I didn't want anything too different to Stock).
Custom kernels etc. didn't work (in fact, the one I tried destabilised the handset), neither did other options such as Barnacle on the stock ROM.
Thanks everyone for trying.

Hi,
I'm an Android user for more than a year now and ever since I have the Galaxy Nexus the tethering is been giving me headaches. it seems to connect to my laptop but after a while it just stops to work. I can't browse any site or download anything from my laptop but this does seem to work on the Nexus.
I've resetted the phone to factory settings but this didn't solve it. I've also noticed that disconnecting and reconnecting to the wifi tethering helps even though I do have connectivity problems sometimes.
is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
I'm on the UK 3 network and the Nexus is not rooted and the unbranded version.
before the galaxy nexus I was using the HTC Desire (rooted etc) but never had the same weird disconnecting issue..
I have not tried it yet

Yes, having the same issues here as we speak. All the issues and fixes above I am experiencing. I'm from Australia on the Optus network.
I put my sim into a Huawei E585 and had no issue whatsoever, so seems to definitely be a phone issue....hopefully a software issue which will be fixed soon as I its extremely annoying as you know!
I'm awaiting the 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 update now, this seems to solve several issues and they also mentioned tethering in it. let's just wait it out now
I haven't received any update on the Galaxy Nexus yet, still running 4.0.1, can anyone please verify if they are having issues running ICS 4.0.2 or newer on their handsets while tethering?
I wonder if the networks have found a way to remotely block tethering access? I say this because I have an HTC Desire on Orange which will no longer load anything when using Wi-Fi tethering.
My Galaxy Nexus is fine though. I'm on the One Plan with Three which includes unlimited data and tethering (says so in the small print of the contract). I'd say contact Three if you're on the one plan and ask for their help.

Guess you didn't really properly read all messages,
I don't have any probs if I tether from my desire, I have an All you can eat data on Three,
the thing is it just stops working and I cannot ping my Nexus from my computer. according to the change log for the nexus they did say to fix some wifi issues etc with updates..
So which version are you running???
I am running 4.0.2, Samsung galaxy nexus, and tehering is not working. Anyone have a solution to this problem?
Temporary solution: (Click thanks! )
Google knows about the ICS tethering problem and this is their temporary solution.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
You must "allow" you computer after you've connected to the hotspot. See this thread for more.
I am experience the same issue on my Galaxy Nexus, it's currently running 4.0.2 and Baseband I9250UGLA4.
my solution to the issue at the moment it's using USB tethering.
I suggest PdaNet, you can find it at Google Play and it's free =)
i am not using the stock wifi tethering feature on ICS instead i'm using FoxFi and at times the timeout issue will show up but if i restart the hotpot a few times, it seems to be working fine again...
i'm not sure if i am any good help to anyone but that's my experience...
FWIW, I have not had any issue with this. I tried tethering for the first time the other day with my Wi-Fi-only tablet for an hour and it Just Worked.
Yes I used the Search feature, still no satisfactory resoultion...
I have rooted several phones over the past few weeks (with different bootloaders), Evo 4Gs, one tethers, one doesn't, Droid RAZRs, both tether, Droid 3s, neither tether (I read the TBH thread, so...), E4GT neither tether (mine included but am running Phantom's Rom so no worries there).
I am at my wits end. The apk(s) used to work before, but as of late I am not having any success at all. Android Tether lists in my networks, my pc and laptop will connect, internet access is detected, they connect but NONE of my browsers are able to connect.
I never had this problem, never had to change any settings in the apk(s), and never had to change my pc(s) configuration. Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone know what is going on?

Try FoxFi, free at Google Play. I had issues tethering E4GT. This app works great for Samsung & Motorola. All others, maybe Bluetooth.

Wifi Tether (Im using 3.1 beta11 pulled from Calk's ICS roms) works if you change the device profile to "Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)". I always enable the access control and allow the pc accessing.
The hacked sprint hotspot has always worked for me on gingerbread as well i prefer it but use the other atm on ICS.
Wifi Tether wont work properly until you change it to thet CDMA/LTE Nexus it gives the same issue you describe without the change.

Ok but what are you running ICS or GB because there is an answer to both.... If you are rooted the stock wifi tether works fine so can we have a little more info although the answers you have gotten so far a pretty damn good.
Thanks
I switched to my Nexus S 4G to give the ICS ROMS a spin and really loved it but missed my E4GT so I recently switched back. I am currently on Phantom's EL26 (Gingerbread) from way back when. I found that the EL 26 modem gives me the best battery life by far and I like the debloated stock because I am running SPB SHELL 3D launcher (cracked-pm me).
I have so many Google Wifi Tether apks on my pc and dug up the wifi_tether_v3_1-pre101.apk and changed the channel to 6. It works now.
The Sprint Hotspot comes fully functional on the ROM that I am on but it was really bugging me that I couldn't get the google wifi tether to work on friends' and family's phones. There must be a bug in the newest release or something.
FIFOX said that HTC has a block on wifi tether when I tried to install it on my friend's Evo 4G.
I am going to use the TBH thread to change the radio strings on my friend's Droid 3 so he can tether. We'll see how that goes later today.
-worked like a charm; rewrote the strings with RadioCom and changed the entitleent with sqlite editor, using the most recent google wifi tether apk on chanel 6.
Thanks for all the input. I'm gonna hit the thanks button for you all.
PEACE!
Hi guys, just wanted to preface that I checked out multiple threads on 'weak wifi' issues and could not find a solution.
Here is my issue:
- I have a rooted (S-OFF/ENG-OFF) HTC Desire HD from Telus.
- I was running Android Revolution but decided to try a different ROM. At this point I had no trouble with wifi.
- Anyway, I tried an ICS ROM (IceColdSandwich-8.0.AOKP) but started noticing that the wifi connection was very weak. It would connect, open a couple of sites, but within 2 minutes, the signal would weaken to zero bars and it couldn't connect. The same thing happened with Google Play, Gmail sync etc.
- I know it is not a router issue as I have a HTC Desire Z right next to me and it has no problem connecting.
Here is what I've tried, software/hardware wise:
- Took off the battery cover and cleaned the contacts.
- For Sense ROMs, I went to advanced wifi setttings, and selected "Best Wifi Performance" and/or DLNA auto-IP.
- Turned wifi on/off.
- Tried a bunch of ROMs (Virtuous_Quattro_RC3, BlackICE v 1.50, DHD_WWE_3.12.405.1, AOSPX-1.0, etc.)
- All ROMS have been flashed after a full wipe using Android Revolution ROM's Full wipe (which works for all roms in CWM)
- Flashed new radios (26.14.04.28 and a couple of others)
What more can I do?
Thanks.
Hey I am currently running the same rom on a Telus DHD rooted.
I had the same issue and it apparently has something to do with whether your network is b or g based. If you play around with your routers settings and check to see which band you're currently using on it, change it and check it out. 5ghz is what mine is running and its working great.
Also as a note if you ever have problems with joining a ad hoc network make sure that you have it set as a open network with no passwords otherwise it won't even let you get a IP address for some reason. Its a limitation of all the ICS roms currently.

Thanks for replying. I'll try it out. If this information was already covered in another thread, I'd appreciate it if you could link me to it.
I just rooted my EVO yesterday & I just can't get a tethering app to work. ONCE I had my laptop connect, but had no internet access. I've tried WiFi Tether several times with different settings & I can't get a connection. I'm just looking for a simple & reliable tethering app to use on trips & such. As far as I know I have the latest updates with no additional roms installed. Basically a rooted stock phone.

This can be a very tricky question that has perplexed many people including myself for quite some time! What I have found is wifi tether for root users is the best and most reliable but there are some conditions to this. What I have found is if you are a sprint customer you have to be sure to get the right version of wifi tether. It all depends on how much flexibility you want but if you want something reliable consider one of the early 2.0 releases instead of going for the latest and experimental one. The easiest way to determine this is to make sure that the little wifi icon is green and not yellow.
if you do decide to try to alter the sentence with the more advanced version, be sure to leave it on a generic mode with waln=0 instead of the specific evo 4G mode.
If you're using a rooted stock, a lot of the roms come with a built into hacked sprint wifi tether, so you should be all good to go.
I'm getting ready to switch over from my current cell phone - an Incredible - to an Incredible 2. I had to unlock the bootloader to downgrade in order to root it - all that worked fine.
Now I've flashed a Paranoid Android ROM of Jelly Bean 4.1.1, and after doing my research, I'm seeing that wireless tethering is not working in JB!!! At least using the wireless tethering app.
I currently tether with the wireless-tether app in the DINC1, and I must continue to wireless tether on the DINC2.
I really want to use a newer version of Android...
In my trying to make it work, I've used all the various versions of wireless tether ("wifi_tether_v..."), both the "stock" ones and the "Treve" mods, trying all the settings-combinations as well as power cycling, not using the wireless encryption, netd(ndc) mode, etc., etc.. So far, nothing I've tried works.
However...I don't have the 3G/Cell service turned on yet in the phone.
So here's the actual question in this post: Would tethering fail because the cell/data service is not turned on?
Running pa_vivow-2.57.3-20130303-100902-ChillyBean.zip, with gapps-jb-20120714.zip.
And of course, I've seen that the built-in tethering app in the pa ROMs is supposed to work - but I can't test that because those menus don't appear under wireless until cell service is turned on!
I can't switch phones until I know that wireless tethering will work.
Any advice/knowledge regarding tethering requiring cell service to be enable in order to test? Or if the built-in "Hotspot" functionality will work in the pa-ROM?
Or do I have to try find a 4.3 ROM rather than the 4.1.1 ROM - so far I'm fairly sure there's no pa-ROM that's 4.3 for the DINC2...
