I was wondering if anyone had an issue with apps in Apps > Running that keep "restarting". I assume that jelly bean is closing these apps to free up memory but on the ram slider at the bottom of that screen I usually hover around 50% of ram being used. It seems that jelly bean is closing apps that I want to keep running.
Also, I noticed that in AOKP, Rom Control > Performance > Other Settings, it lets you change the amount of Ram the minfree taskkiller will keep. AOKP default is 100mb which I've been using this whole time. I am currently trying 25mb to see if that helps keep apps from getting killed.
Does anyone have any insight into this?

Hey saw your post. My problem was fixed with a clean flash. I was on aokp 4.1 build 1 and I had dirty flashed up to build 3. I just recently clean flashed aokp m1 4.2 and my restarting apps problem has been fixed. I would recommend you do that. Let me know if it works for you.

Any other suggestion? I seem to have the same problem with my SIII

Just installed CyanogenMod 10 on my S3 and am loving it. I did notice that it seems to be closing apps more frequently than the TouchWiz ICS ROM though, can anyone else confirm? It seems like, under similar usage, CyanogenMod loads apps from a cold start more than from RAM.
Haven't had any issues here

I have been experiencing some slow down and launcher refresh (when I come back from apps like flipboard, xda , g+etc) for last few days.
I don't think I had this issue with 4.1.1. To eliminate some possibilities I switched to stock launcher (from Holo launcher HD) and stopped using live wall paper but I still see this issue (launcher refreshes when I close some apps so probably launcher was earlier purged from the memory).
I used to face this issue on galaxyS with CM9 & CM10 but it was tolerable for galaxy S as it had less RAM (512 MB) but I don't expect this issue with gnex which has 1 GB ram.
I am using rooted stock 4.1.2 (I upgraded by flashing system and boot image on top of 4.1.1) with only one developer option on (usb debugging).
I haven't really started using any new app in this period (but I did upgrade my existing apps to the newer version). Most of the time my background running services are google location services, media, good application, betterbatterystats, notification toggle, battery widget and exDialer. I always keep google apps sync on. So my usage hasn't really changed between 4.1.1 and 4.1.2.
Could this be an issue with RAM management in 4.1.2 ?
Am I the only one facing this issue ?
If its just me then it must be some app that's causing this issue ?
Any help in narrowing down this ?

ive never had browser reload on my gnex. maybe you have a bad app(s) using too much ram?
I have uploaded two logs (at https://www.box.com/s/j7nxvt2s4am6hbd82ppq ) of 2 instacnes where my launcher refreshed as it was purged from memory (look for holo launcher in the log). I have faced this issue with stock launcher too but probably with less frequency.
Please let me know if someone can advise based on the uploaded catlogs.
I often (very often, actually ) take a look at the current running apps and memory usage. Yesterday I performed a clean install of 4.2.2, and I noticed that memory usage is now about 330-380Mb (after closing them all). Before flashing, I was using the same 4.2.2 stock ROM, but updated through OTA from 4.2.1. Same apps (restored using the backup service), same running services, different memory usage: always around 400Mb.
Have you ever experienced the same thing? Is this just a matter of the up time?
4.2.2 roms suffer from memory leak effects . Better option is to downgrade to 4.1.2.

Man, I wish I had that much available at any time...I've been running PA with about 140 apps installed and only have 150-100mb available at any given time
Xylon is the only rom that does not suffer from slowdowns. I tested many and all had the problems you mentioned on first post. But now I am on rooted 4.1.2 stock . Until there is a fix from google I won't go to the latest one.4.1.2 and nexus is amazing fast.

20mb is a negligible difference (less than 2%) and certainly isn't enough to claim any kind of improvement.
Hi, I'm running Smooth Rom and I'm experiencing a lot of apps that reload when I'm multitasking. Usually when i listen to music and using the browser it crashes. Which i think means there's not enough ram. Any tips to optimize ram usage?. Usually I only have 160 mb of free ram when running nothing. THX
Did you do a clean install?
Might also be helpful to wipe cache and dalvik cache

I'm having the same kind of problem with the related ROM GalaxySBean. Just sitting around (with only Apex Launcher running) I'm down to 90-100 Mb of RAM open. Can't read a book and listen to Pandora at the same time.
Any suggestions on unneeded system apps to freeze or ROMs that are better at handling resources (how is CM10.1/SGT7 [JB-4.2.2]?) would be much appreciated.
UPDATE: After rebooting and performing the suggested Cache clearings, I started with 142 Mb open and am now at 130 open without touching anything else. The meter in the "Running" apps in the settings area shows 272 MB in use, while RAM used by the apps listed there only totals about 78. That's about 200 MB of RAM in hidden processes.
You may want to try an app called Greenify which will stop those hidden processes if you would like. It only stops the ones that you want

Thanks. I appreciate the input. I see Greenify doesn't do system apps, though, and those are more the ones I think are causing the problem. For example, I know SMS push is in there and running on GalaxySBean although, obviously, it's useless on a Kindle Fire. I got that one. The problem is the others that I am not clear on what they're doing or whether I can 86 them without consequences or not.
What's the footprint of the ROM you're using? I'm looking for a more snappy performance than what I'm getting. I realize nothing's going to be as tailored to the hardware as stock, but I should be able to read a book and listen to Pandora at the same time.

Well the thing that I dont like about galaxy s bean and no offense, but its a port. Parts have a tendency to have more problems.
Second for those you know won't effect your system you can freeze them
Third I am using the alien rom which is new but based off of twa 's rom which is what I was running before this. Both I highly recommend. You may want to do a full wipe to ensure you have no performance issues
Edit I hit thanks by accident

Can't thank you enough for this "Alien ROM" suggestion. Backed up, wiped, and flashed and it's running like a charm.
Each ROM post 4.1.2 that I've used (4.2+) has been laggy to the point where its unusable. I am currently using TWA
Privs cm9 ICS. On the newer Roms I always wipe system, cache, dalvik cache, and data. I am just wondering why are
Newer Roms laggy?is there a workaround? (By laggy I mean browser randomly closing, taking a long time to do anything
And other things that brings my kindle to the point where its unusable) ( my kindle isn't my main device as I have
A nexus 7 2013 that I'm typing on right now but I need my kindle to be usuable) has anyone experienced this same
Stuff?
You're not alone in these issues. I've bounced from rom to rom looking for the one that compromises the least. Cm9 roms suffer from lack of deep sleep. Cm10 from browser crashes and lag.
Maybe 4.4 is the answer?
Also, the cm9 you referenced, does it deep sleep? I don't think I tried that one.

I have Jellybean 4.3.1 and it doesn't lag in mayor way. It only does when multitasking since it doesn't have so much RAM. I also use Greenify to check for background processes and I try to use low intensive apps. But I think that KitKat can solve many of this problems since it supports low RAM devices.

I doubt it has deep sleep but I haven't charged it in a few days and it wasn't full when I put it down and its still at 50 plus percent....keep in mind I know this just because I check it every few days (don't use it much) and its TWA privs cm9.

Yea. Can't wait till kitkat so I can finally move from cm9.also,I am even considering downgrading to cm7 but I'm not because no app support. Dang amazon only putting in 512mbs ram after 1 gig is standard in mobile devices.(512 wasn't enough for most things when ICS came out, amazon really cheaped out.
