Google Voice and porting number to ATT - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

My GF wants to leave Verizon and join my family plan on ATT. I tried to port her in, but they are saying that because her number is a different market, they can't add her to my account. She would either need to change her number or have her own plan. Those choices suck.
I wonder if there's a way around this, and considered porting her to Google Voice, but i don't know how much of a pain it is using GV to emulate your old number and not the new assigned one from ATT. She doesn't want to have to work hard just to call/text. And i think it would be annoying to have her calls and texts show up with a new number.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I give out my GV number to anyone and don't have any problems using it. Just install the GV app and tell it to make all outgoing calls via GV and she'll be fine...with voice calls. Texts come through and go out fine using GV, but MMS is not supported. I don't have a texting plan so it's not much of a concern to me, but if she is used to using MMS then it will become problematic.

Just remember that using Google voice will eat minutes even if you are on a mobile to mobile plan.

If you call customer service or go to your local AT&T corporate store they are able to have the same family plan with different area codes. It is possible but the work around is opening a new account under your name under what is called a NBI account. Basically that's how business accounts are opened but it will be under your personal information and then they could move your number into that account and then bring the Verizon number with a different area code into that same NBI account.

Yeah, but if that new NBI account is created, any grandfatherd features such as old Raye plans or unl data are lost since a new plan has to be set up

Nope, all they do is transfer over the lines with existing features and it still stays grandfathered.

Exactly -- I ran into the same issue over 2 years ago. I am on AT&T, live in Chicago, but have a South Florida number, my wife was on Verizon. When we got married, she stayed with Verizon until her contract was up. Then she switched to AT&T and got an iPhone with Unlimited data. At the time, I had iPhone with Unlimited as well. They wouldn't allow her to be added to my account because I had an out of area number. I spoke with a manager, told them that I knew it was possible because a few of my friends have the same thing. I said I wanted to make sure I kept my Unlimited Data, and I wanted to make sure my wife did too.
They opened a Small Business Account for me. When it was all set up they transfered over my wifes account. She opened it separately with AT&T because the window for the Unlimited Data was running out and she wanted to get it while she could. I personally recommend that they open the account and have it set up first then port the number. We kept all of our features as they were prior to the new account.
When I switched to Android, I kept my number, upgraded to LTE, and kept my unlimited (5 GB throttled) data plan.
Make sure that they know exactly what you want when you switch your account so you don't lose something.

someone told me that opening an NBI account does change some things with your plan, not data unlimited, but other stuff i wasan't sure if it would have an effect or not. either way this might be my best solution

send TXT without a messaging plan(disabled)?

I have messaging completely disabled on my phone(even the vzw free text messages dont come through). I was wondering, if i use an app like Handcent SMS, will that work by itself? Will i incur messaging charges?
Also, i heard you can email a msg to a phone # by doing something like:
mailto:[email protected]?.com
if its to a verizon cust for instance, what would i put after the @? is it vtext.com, vzwpix.com, ???
I have been on google voice for a little over 2 years. And with that haven't been paying for any text plans, since then. Your best best is to incorporate that, either by using a number u can pick through what google offers in google voice as you se it up(painfully easy)
Or
Take the better but...harder route. (Which I did)
If u are out of contract...port your number and give it to google voice. Tell ur cell provider u need it for business voicemail reasons. And for you to receive a new one from them. Then for the rest of your cellular life u will never have to worry about paying for text and BONUS ever have to tell any one u got a new number...because now it will always be in google voice..and u can connect that number with anything!

I've been afraid to port over to google voice. It seems they tire of things easily and have a huge pile of abandoned projects.
I still always think of doing it though.
Another alternative is to use a app named textfree, it will provide you with a new number and unlimited texting.

well said, i agree on you with that. but this is too big. many people use it. it is so heavily implemented that it would be simply BAFFLING if they would. besides, there would be plenty of options in the event they did (free porting out, refunds, etc)
either way. i doubt it. smart phones have made this a number one bonus , the new york times wrote an article just last month on the death of text payment
guess who was one of the first to have the option?

You wouldn't be able to use Handcent or the like since they are just a GUI overlay to the stock texting app. You would have to use an independent messaging program like Google Voice which was mentioned above and I've heard a good number of success stories with it (not necessarily the porting your number part).
To answer your other question you can email any cell phone and it will go through as an MMS. Every carrier has their own email domain for it that a Google search will give you. For Verizon it would be [email protected].

Has anyone found a solution for Google Voice and Tmobile Prepaid?

Has anyone found a workaround for conditional call forwarding issue with t-mobile prepaid? I NEED my google visual voicemail and I wanna use my ported SIM card number. There has to be a fix for this!
I wonder why tmobile would not allow this?
I would be nice to start a signature sheet showing the interest in them fixing this setting.
I would like to see this working also, but it's up to T-Mo...

I think for now the only "fix" is to start a new SIM account with a throwaway number and port your desired number from T-MO to Google Voice. Don't give out the throwaway number and use GV for everything.
The problem with that is that you use their sms services. No MMS and the phone doesn't control the sms at all.
I have a straight talk sim on the way and I am gonna compare the service, although it doesn't look good with straight talk in NYC.

No, I don't think T-mobile would care.
I believe all prepaid services are currently unable to use GV. They need "Conditional Call Forwarding" which is a feature not included with Prepaid plans. Straight Talk is what I use, and they also do not have conditional call forwarding.

This.
Using GV for everything isn't as scary as people think. I quickly got over the lack of MMS support (email is a better standard for such things anyway). I love the ability to text from my main number in the browser regardless of how far away I am from my phone.

Yeah straighttalk has it but doesnt work well in NYC. I am however trying it out. If the speeds and coverage is close I might switch. I just dont wanna get cut off and loose my number as is the case with some people.

If nothing else works you can call t mobile customer service and ask them to remove voice mail completely - I made two Boost mobile phones work with Google Voice that way - it works perfectly.
This would obviously work if you want to use GV number for everything - for me it is no problem since I use mostly Google Voice numbers since 2005 or 2006, or from the beginning of GrandCentral.
I've made the switch to just Google voice and I never looked back. I don't even know what my "real" number is. Like someone else said about MMS, emailing pics works just fine for me.

Straight Talk ATT sim has conditional call forwarding... Straight Talk T-Mobile sim does not....
That's the choice... faster data or google voice for voicemail.... I've been on Tmobile $30 plan for over 2 months now.. Data is great, but I have found that 2GB is enough for me a lot thanks to Opera Mini and the voip solutions have not worked well. I really has a disdane for calling / prompt voicemail so I am going to give the ATT service a try here in Portland next month. I'll post some results when I get the ST ATT sim
I am trying to understand the issue here. I have Verizon currently and am using a GV # with no issues. My calls come in great, I use GV as my voice mail, and gv for texting. No one knows my verizon number.
I want to get an unlocked phone, and move to TMobile prepaid plan. My goal is to use my current GV number, and use google voice mail and texting too.
What problems will I encounter?

The only problem you will have is if someone calls your TMobile number when it's time to go to voicemail it will not go to Google voice voicemail. This it not a problem if, like me, no one has your TMobile number anyways. Everything else works the same way that is does on Verizon.
You can have TMobile disable voice mail so if some random person calls your TMobile number you won't ever have to worry about getting the vm from someone you don't know. Ie tele marketers.

I ported my number to Google and use GV integration app so I can use stock messaging app. No problem at all except for not being able to send MMS, however I receive every MMS sent to me automatically via Google's MMS to email feature.

[Q] Wheres the native android SIP Internet Calling at?

Ok so I've been looking all over this phone for the native android internet calling settings but I can't find it. I wanted to add my sipgate account to my phone through the settings like most android phones have, but I can't seem to find it Does anyone know if it is even on the phone by default?? Or if it isn't on the phone at all?? I don't really like using the sipdroid app because it just doesn't feel reliable enough. With the native one, it seems to run seamlessly with the native phone app. Reason I'm asking is because I got a new sim card and opened a new account under the monthly 4g plan. $30 a month for unlimited text and 5gb of 4g with 100 minutes. I just ported my number to Google voice. I have my sip account under google voice so calls would get forwarded to my sip account so I dont have to worry about using the 100 minutes anyway,

Did you every find an answer to this question?
Its not available in the stock rom. However it is available in CM10 go to phone>press menu>call settings>internet calling. In the Stock rom there is nothing there.

Want to port Sprint number to Google Voice, don't want to cancel contract though.

I have both a Sprint Epic 4G Touch and an ATT Galaxy S3.
I have had Sprint for 12 years, it's my main number. My ATT line is newer and had a newer number that I honestly don't use much.
What I would like to do is port my Sprint number to my Google Voice account so I can use it on both phones. I was all set to do this when I was told that porting my Sprint number to GV will cause my Sprint account/line to cancel automatically and that I will have to call them and open a new line of service etc etc.
UMMMMMMM? Seriously? I can't just port it and get them to give me a new number?
Someone else thought I might be able to call them and request a second number for my line, then port the old one and it would just kick over to the new number Sprint gives me and not kill my line of service.
Has anyone done this before? Help?! =)
Thanks.

Sprint has gvoice integration where it can have your sprint number associated with your google account of choosing and have it work on your cellphone, just log into voice.google.com and get started there. If you decide you dont like it for any reason you can just hit the undo button on the page and it will go back to normal. EDIT: also this costs nothing you can add or subtract your sprint # as many times as you want. just go to voice.google.com or download the google voice app on you phone to get started, goodluck have fun
Yea I know how that works but I want to have my Sprint number ported to my GV account so it has no attachment to ANY carrier.
I want to be able to use my Sprint number on ANY cellphone I might ever have in the future.
Sounds like I'm going to have to cancel my Sprint account to do what I want to do. So if I walk away from Sprint, port my number over and let it cancel my account and get hit a ETF fee, will that fee be the FULL ETF fee or based on how long I have left on my contract? I have 11 months left on my Sprint contract.

If you do what Mynaga said to do you should be able to do this. When you download the Gvoice app on your phone you would be able to select what call you want google voice to handle on your phone like: use gv for all calls, or only international ones etc.. so if you select google voice to handle all calls on both your epic and on your ATT phone then you would always be using that same number . ..
You say you dont want to cancel your Sprint line and you want to be able to use this number on any cellphone you ever have in the future well if you upgrade to another phone with Sprint then your number gets swapped to that phone and just install google voice and set it up the same way and your good to go.... hope this helps.

[Q] [Google Voice] Nice features. Free. BUT -> Do you trust it?

Security wise...from a haunting perspective pretty slim because Google logs everything. With those logs, they are there forever. +Who else has their hands in the cookie jar to grab whatever info they want?
In industries where people deal with high profile clients or heck even in the financial sector where information is vital, it wouldn't feel very secure knowing that your communication is being logged...
Therefore, what other more secure options are available for having a (mask) number, sms and online vm feature?
The main thing is, to all the fellow Note 3 users, do you trust GV?
Been using the feature for years without an issue.
I only use my Google voice number to text and call when I sell on Craigslist, and i give that number to hoes I don't want having my real number.

Yes. Unlike phone companies. They don't log ****.
What's nice is that you have the same phone number for life and no need to worry about porting phone numbers from one carrier to another. Plus its free. Only issue is the voicemail sucks.

You concern about privacy in a Google product, while using Google phone and Google OS...seriously? Google don't need you to use GVoice they already know everything about you.
Unfortunately I've heard a rumor that Google Voice is being discontinued in a near future...Hope it's not true.
The rumor is that they might start charging for the service. -And seriously I think you're missing the point of the question.

I also have used GV for several years, one of the nicest features I use it for is when I'm at home and someone calls me on my mobile, I hit ignore and it transfers it to my Land line. Very cool. Been using it for over five years!
I use Google voice for my work calls, texts and voicemails. This way only the people I want to have my personal number get that.

That rumor was also heard last year, and the year before. Not saying it won't happen, but I quit caring.
I use Google voice with an obihai. Works great. You can still forward and answer from cell and all that, but I haven't paid for a land line in years. All you do is sign in from work if you want to use it elsewhere.
As far as security goes, you are subject to being monitored whenever you are suspected of wrong doing, no matter which carrier you choose. And for that matter, VoIP is what all the major carriers use now anyways.
If you are strictly speaking from a standpoint of being spammed and site recommendations based on growing history, etc... Than you can just create a generic Google account and assign the number to that one, while still enjoying the other Google account (this is what I did to keep my g voice and personal phone separate).
