Atrix 4g or Samsung Captivate Glide - Samsung Captivate Glide

Thanks to bimasakti85 on the Atrix forum i found out that my Atrix's digitizer is broken.
I looked on ebay and for around $45 i can get a new one and replace it myself.
AT&T is already sending me a Samsung Captivate Glide, i had insurance and i am paying a $125 deductible and i have to send my atrix back.
At the end of the month i am up for an upgrade and will be getting a HTC 8X windows phone 8 phone; however, do want to keep an Android phone as well that way i can just switch sim cards when i want.
My question is
Should I just keep the Samsung and return the Atrix, or should i just return the Samsung and replace the Atrix screen?
I also thought about selling the Samsung on ebay, but that would leave me with no Android once i get the HTC 8x.

You should keep the Glide. Better phone IMO and now it has some nice stuff going for it

I looked at the Atrix as well when I bought this.. the reason I chose this phone over the atrix? Well the atrix has a nice and slightly faster dual core @ 1.2ghz, more screen area, and a gig of memory..
But no, I own a original captivate and it was called the unbrickable phone! Once a couple settings had been set, a few tweaks and a new recovery, I seen this had absolute potential..
That and the atrix still default has the moto lock still on it so no firmware hacks til you remove that crap.
I love my glide and am glad I made the choice for it. Moto atrix was cheaper, but I knew this phone would be as good as its legacy.

I think the atrix also does not have as big of a community as we do here, means lack to support with less people working on it. We have some good devs that don't even own a glide and they give us great roms and mods and we love that we can have full power like that.
The fact is, the captivate glide is the unbrickable 2.0 and I love this phone and our community is full of awesome people.

I had a Glide a while back, maybe a month ago. I loved it but I wanted something new, and I wanted AOSP/AOKP. So I went to an infuse then a SII. If I could have a space device, I would choose the glide.

The $$ aside and focusing just on the phones...I have the Atrix and the mrs has the Glide.
The Atrix has a better screen and is more capable. fingerprint unlock is great. I've only rooted the phone and have no need for ROMs or anything special. I have a lapdock too (one of those $50 deals) and it works ok. Plenty fast and battery life is good.
The Glide is not as capable overall compared to the Atrix, but it's a good phone nonetheless. The keyboard is the only reason to pick the Glide over the Atrix IMO. Battery life is not as good as the Atrix IMO with minimal services running and when idle.

I would keep the Samsung; IIRC, Motorola isn't going to push out ICS (Android 4.0.x) to the Atrix. That alone should sway you over to keeping the Samsung over the Motorola. Motorola mentions this themselves: Atrix 4G will remain on Gingerbread officially.

Yeah I decided to keep the glide and return the Atrix, so far I'm happy with my choice. Although I still think the Atrix is a great phone after getting a taste of ICS I couldn't give it up. The camera on the glide is incredibly much better than the Atrix.
The glide was much easier for me to be able to get used to in terms of rooting and ROM management. Right now I'm running the leaked ICS.

[Q] Aria vs. Inspire vs. Captivate vs ??

AT&T customer here.. I was pretty happy with my rooted Aria, but it got stolen a little while ago. I've already got my insurance replacement on the way.
Question.. From what I've read, there's a good chance that my replacement Aria will have 2.2 which prevents it from being rooted. I'm pretty much addicted to having Swype, so that's a big problem. I liked the relatively small size of the Aria, but there are times when I think that I might not mind a larger phone.
So.. I'm considering selling my replacement and buying something else. I have to stay with AT&T, so I've looked at the Captivate and the Inspire.
How would your rate these phones vs the Aria (assume 2.2 version) for:
1. Rooting
2. Screen visibility
3. Battery life/speed/performance
Any other thoughts are also welcome.
Also - I had one or two purchased apps on my phone. Is there any way to get those back without having to pay again?
I'd go with the inspire if I were you. Atrix is the strongest of the three...with a locked bootloader. It's like buying an expensive gaming computer only to find OSX on it

[Q] Would you still by the Incredible 2 ?

I'm beyond ready to upgrade my OG Droid, which has served me well for two whole years, and I'm wondering if you all would still recommend it now, in late November 2011. In a world of Rezounds, Razrs, Bionics, and eventually Galaxy Nexus's (Nexi?) will I end up feeling like I'm already out of date if I buy a Dinc2?
I see that people on this and other forums really like the DI2. And I see that I can have root, and a fun selection of ROM's to play with, like I'm used to with my OG Droid. I think I'd miss all of that with one of the newer phones, at least until all of that gets worked out. And of course, you can buy the Incredible 2 for next to nothing, while the "hot" phones are close to $300, even with an upgrade. I don't have 4G where I live out in the stix, and probably won't for a while, probably not until after my next upgrade.
Your thoughts?
In your case absolutely
Tap'n on miui incredible 2
I recommend you get a Inc2 locally and hold on to your upgrade. I got mine for 150 a couple months ago.

FREAKIN' GO FOR IT!!!! IT'S THE BEST PHONE EVER!!!! lol
Well my og Droid was a good phone but I got the dinc2 toward the end of Sept and its so sweet. Its easy to get root and custom rom going. In fact I choose this phone mainly because miui had recently been ported to it. Its super smooth and really don't even need over clocking.
I've learned a lot about android since I got my inc2 as a replacement for my og inc and I wouldn't trade that
Lol, I was in the exact same situation. Coming from an OG Droid, and not really knowing what to wait for. I don't have 4g at my house either and that was pretty much the decision maker. I didn't feel like paying for something I couldn't use. Plus I wanted a 4" screen. Its the perfect screen size. I bought my wife a Droid X and myself the DINC2. Had it for about a month now, and I'm loving it. One thing though, I don't care for how the back comes off. It basically splits the phone in half... And feels kinda cheap. Also I bought a otter box commuter case but it felt too slippery, so I got a body glove case too lol. This case made the phone perfect.

There's not a single phone currently available or soon to be available that I'd take over the Inc2. You can keep your dual cores, NFC chips, 4.3+ inch screens, etc. To me, the Inc2 is the perfect combination of form factor, features and performance.
I agree with above. The only reason I would dump this phone is if I left Verizon and got my hands on a euro GS2 or Nexus. This phone leaves nothing to be desired.
I will say though that it looks outclassed on Verizon shelves lately. I still think it is the best and totally underrated.
[Sent from my INC2]
Came from the HTC Eris, loving the DI2 & got mine free - could've gone with a bigger 4.3" device running 4G, except I get poor 3G coverage at the house while the zip code is 4G, if I walk 4 blocks west, I get a 5x faster coverage and enhanced signal coverage.
By the time my line is ready for an upgrade in 2013, I'm sure there will be plenty of 4G global device with better battery standby & the bugs will be ironed out beyond Ice Cream Sandwich, etc. Otherwise, this has more than enough reserve power as an advanced mobile phone plus a few, extra functions on the go - I have no intentions of wishing for a HDMI hookup to watch Hulu Plus, etc. on big screen HDTV & then ***** about poor Dolby DSP tuning.
Planning to surprise DW with one (DI2 in white or maybe red ??) for the holiday even though she barely manage to remember how to use her feature phone. There are virtually no FRU or pre-owned units available on VZW's site (except for warranty exchanges ....) which is another good indicator of how solid it is.
+1 however, on the battery cover - although with 2 days of standby time, unlike my buddies bragging about their TBolts, I don't worry about pulling, switching to a spare & charging battery every few hours - or, spend $$ for the brick (bulky extended battery & cover + oversized case/cover)
Thanks!
Thanks to all who replied. I'm leaning towards getting this phone. I do want to get into the store and see a Rezound in person, take a look at that 1280x720 screen.
I have had the HTC D Eris, HTc INC1, and now INC2.
I can't say that the Rezound is that great of a phone..
I know the Inc2 is almost a year old, in April? i think..?
but it's a great phone, I love root, and it seems you do too, and this phone has a great variety of ROMs and some incredible Devs.
will the rezound eventually be what the inc2 is, yes.
I remeber when inc2 had no root, and ppl thought it would never come with software.
it's ult. up to you.
I would sell the inc1 and buy a second hand inc2, then get the rezound, but hey thats me
Well, I pulled the trigger on a new DI2. Got it for free on Black Friday at Target of all places. Was walking through, not really thinking about or looking at phones, but happened to see the sign for some of the phones they were offering for free on Friday only.
And so far, I love it! It seems real fast, apps pop up almost instantly, nothing ever bogs down or lags in any way. I'm sticking with the stock ROM for now, no real complaints with it. But we'll see how long before I get the itch to start messing around and load up a different ROM. Maybe I can hold out for CM9, or another ICS ROM.
I own the Inc2 and I haven't yet seen a phone worth upgrading too. Every other phone has something I don't like and I'm hoping we see some all metal, super thin, dual-core phones early next year. Like many DINC2 owners I bought mine because this past summer because I couldn't wait any longer for a dual-core phone. Now that they are out, there are other quips, like the nexus missing a few features and the razr's uncomfortable design.
If you can't wait any longer, I would get the droid incredible 2, rhyme, or resound. Just be forewarned that they each have their small faults. I would recommend waiting a few more months to see what kind of ice cream sandwich goodness is released.

Well, I would personally recommend the rezound as it is a dual core with beats (for those that care. I personally don't) and will be getting ICS in the upcoming months. It will also have the latest sense when ICS comes out for it, and I'm excited to see what kind of spin HTC will put on that bad boy.

Love the Dinc2, and would have a hard time giving it up at the moment, but.... The Rezound would be hard to pass up. That would be the only other phone I would consider at this time (not even interested in the Galaxy Nexus, sorry no love for Samsung from me lol). If I had 4g, I would be very tempted to make the switch, but I doubt that 4g will be in my neighborhood anytime soon, so the Dinc2 is safe in my home
dinc 2
Go for it, it is an awesome phone. The dinc 2 is one of a few DLNA capable devices on the market and in the future that will be a big deal. The dinc was my first android phone and it was good but the dinc 2 is better. I looked at the rezound and the razr and while good phones I could not justify the $300 tag when I was able to get the dinc 2 for free. Check out my post abot the dinc 2 from yesterday on the tv out thread.

Swore I would NEVER Do A Droid.
I got my DIncI $Free Back in March since my LG Fathom was giving me issues.
Got assimilated.
Dark DIncII arrived in Sept.
$50USD and was rooted the weekend BEFORE the hboot.98.
Loved it so much that Reda DIncII was a Black Friday deal. $Free.
Now my next upgrade for familly plan will be in Jan.
The rep I spoke with told me that the Rezound uses MOST of that GIG of RAM for the Beat to even TRY to make it sound any good.
The amount of people that are sending back whole unit for because of issues with the overpriced earbuds.
Yea, it's a wonder that this unit isn't pulled already and sold as CPO.
Either way VZW just wrights it off as a loss and keeps trying to hump the AppHole.
I thought that "Denial of Access to User Up Gradable Storage" was an AppHole copyright.
Now Willy PHone 7 thinks it's a way to sell more PHones with different storage capacity.
What a bunch of crap....

Any how back near topic:
Yea I think I might just get another DIncII maybe the White one.
Enjoy....

Need phone opinions please

So the wife wants a new phone. I currently have the E4GT and am happy with the phone, not so happy with Samsungs lack of updates.
I run Cyan 9 Alpha 6 on it.
I am debating a few phones and wanted opinons from folks that have had them and can provide me a comparison to the E4gt.
All of these phones are LTE only, so I would lose 4g speeds until LTE is rolled out where I am (Orange County so maybe by end of year)
I assume they all have camera flash and expandable SD card support. Correct me if I am wrong.
I really am happy with the picture and video that the e4gt takes.
I hate how if you have an SD card in the phone, there is a lag to wait the phone from sleep. Can't get over this......
Was thinking to get the Google Nexus on sprint. I like that its directly from Google, I would only have to root and would get the latest software directly from google, but not sure how it stacks up to the e4gt. I think the hardware is a little better but not sure. I would like to wait for the next one, but that will probably be at least 6 months and wife can't wait that long.
Galaxy 3. Latest and greatest, but again a samsung phone. Is this really enough better than the Nexus for me to deal with another phone from Samsung?
HTC Evo 4g lte. I had the OG Evo and loved it. Like that this has the dedicated photo chip and can take some gnarly pictures. HTC seems better about updating software than samsung, but still not google direct.
In the end it doesn't matter if Samsung HTC Google etc updates or not the phone, there are some old phones like the Vibrant that has fully working Jellybean, it all about what the community can do.
Because these companies are not gonna give on time updates because there is always another new phone, for example GSII and EVO 3D ICS updates, the SII was finished a long time ago, we got the leak and in the end the leak was the officials, and look a the EVO 3D, their virgin Mobile got ICS first and Sprint is sending their update on August. If you care to much about updates go with and Nexus.
I would tell you to focus on Specs and look, for me its all about HTC EVO or GSIII.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
The Galaxy Nexus is already getting the JB update, but you give up the external SD, as is the case with all nexus phones.
I would stay away from any phone that does not have a removable battery like it had the plague, no matter how good the other specs are, as batteries decrease in lifespan over time, and with no way to replace it...
I would say get the SGS3, and use a modified ROM from XDA. I just upgraded my ET4G to the SGS3, and am extremely happy I did so.
If you have the original Nexus S, the upgrade to the SGS3 is worth it IMO, if you have the Galaxy Nexus, perhaps not so much, but it is more of a personal call.
The big question here is what does your wife want? I don't touch my wifes phone, its easier that way.
She wants whatever I give her while she is in the kitchen making me a sandwich.

Nicely put. That being said, the lack of removable battery on the HTC drives me nuts... On the other hand, the radios, both wifi and 3g/4g, are terrible on Samsung devices. My old HTC Hero has much better wifi reception than my s2.

Yea I wanted to, but she is still on the palm-pre (couldn't get her to upgrade when she "knows" the phone) and that is starting to quit on her. She needs a new one.
Leaning towards the HTC after looking at them in store.
Buy something off craigslist for 150 or so and save that upgrade until the next round of phones come out. There isn't anything out there now that is miles ahead of an s2

I don't believe the camera is worse on the s3 according to the reviews i have read, but the problem is it's not a lot better and it should have been. The s3 should have been the s2.5. As far as the evolte, unless you know how to keep them from bending i would say no thanks. And many are bending.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781527
I'm in the same boat - hoping that when NV rolls out here in the fall the MVNO will shortly either get the GS3 dual or perhaps in the summer the quad core. In the meantime I bought the missus a used E4GT and got her on that one until then.
Just look around and you might be able to snag one for under $150... perhaps even less since the current trade in value is only $110.

I just came to this conclusion because I've been following the s3 section and, of the people that had our phones, have said the s3 wasn't as good as the e4gt for low light and noise with the camera. I haven't ran any tests of my own yet with sprint display models.

Talk Me Into the S3

I am a 23 year old CIS Grad who loves technology, computers, and my phone.
Current Phone - iPhone 4 (Needed trusty OS and previously had a Fascinate, Droid, iPhone 3G)

Reasons I am on iOS
I steered clear of Android over the last few years because they release so many phones that I always feel that I will get the short end of the stick, see a newer, better phone, and want to kill myself.
Android Updates are just inconsistent (unless you have a Nexus, which is already outdated).
Reasons I Shouldn't Be on iOS
I love customizing my phone
I love rooting my phone
I love experimenting with the OS
So, should I get the Samsung Galaxy S III?

I would get the S3 over the new nexus any day. Only for one reason though LG is making it and I will never own something from LG again. I have had bad luck with LG everything and I mean everything I have ever bought that was LG was complete **** IMO. Even with it beaning a new nexus I feel the S3 still is far more superior. Good luck on your choice.

I find it funny that one of your reasons for avoiding Android has been because of the wide variety of choices, fearing that as soon as you purchase a phone it'll already be outdated.....
So to remedy this you went ahead and chose a proprietary phone that was outdated 6 months before it was even available to purchase!
ICS is good on the S3. With the right custom TW ROM, you get good speed, a smooth UI, good battery life, and that it's easier to use than GB (my wife has the Conquer 4G).
I've used the JB leak though, and can confirm its faster, easier to use, provides better battery life, and seems to have enabled better data speeds (although, this could just be a placebo) than my current favorite TW ICS ROM. I believe KLP will see even more improvements, and that's due out towards the end of the month (rumor has it).
As far as phone hardware goes. This is technology. Of course it will be outshine shortly after release! The market is competitive, and that means the consumer wins. You can't go wrong in getting the SGS3 right now. Likewise, if you wanted to wait, nobody would blame you for holding out for the Note 2, or a new Nexus device, or HTC's answer to the SGS3, or the SGS4.....I could keep going because there'll always be something around the corner.
So break out of the pen, sell your wool, leave the apple where it fell and get yourself a phone that you've researched and are confident meets your needs - then come back here to XDA, do more research (use search please), and make your device unique, one-of-a-kind, and expect the best from your device.
Cause that's what XDA's all about...enabling probability in the natural pursuit of demanding excellence from the things we enjoy.

I'd wait for the fall/winter offerings
I have only owned 4 smartphones so my opinion may not be on great use. However I thoroughly enjoy the S3 and have to say it is my favorite phone..plus I haven't even rooted it yet. My first smartphone was an iPhone 3g so of course I loved it, but when I got my Inspire I never looked back. I rooted my Inspire and flashed the hell out of it. Every other week it felt like I had a new phone with new tips and tricks to learn. I never felt like my phone was outdated although it was.
After I was eligible to upgrade I picked up an Evo 4G Lte which I ended up returning. The only things I miss are the build quality and audio quality. I'm not saying the S3 doesn't have good sound because it does, and it is much louder than the Evo was. The build quality is fine as well, but I liked the kickstand and "metal" body. Regardless of those two factors I still love my S3. I have yet to root it and feel that if I do I will love it that much more. I also feel that with the internals, screen, and software this phone is packing, it is a definite winner. ICS/JB are both very good operating systems and feel much more fluid and closer to the level of "quality" someone who buys an iPhone might expect. The community here is also great which is another reason that I'm sticking with the droid.

Honestly, that's one of the things I like about android phones. With so many OEMs competing, you get slightly better phones every few months or so. Better processor, better screen, better camera, NFC, new design etc. So you get gradual progress over the year. With iPhone (at least starting with the 4s) you get slight progress once a year.
To paraphrase NWA, the SGS3's the motherf*cker that's built to last.
Don't buy lg
S3 is future proof

S3 is a great phone no doubt. But it should be easy to pick between it and the Note 2 because they are in different catagories. Do you want a phone that also doubles as a small tablet or just a phone? IMO the Note 2 is too big for someone that wants just a phone but I realize that is not always the case.
Other thing to consider is the sooner you upgrade the sooner you can upgrade next time. Also, the S3 is going to be cheaper on the upgrade since it has dropped in price while the Note 2 or any of the new phones are gonna cost more.
Not trying to sway either way just giving some things to consider.
New dock, and the headphone jack is on the bott..........oh damn never mind. In all seriousness I would just wait, you hit the nail on the head about all the different android phones that come out after the release of the newest thing. You will never have the latest android phone on contract unless you have money to burn.
The S3 is a fantastic phone and will hold me over for the time being and plus I bought the plan from bestbuy that gives me the most bang for my buck if I want to get something else before my two years is up. I would not recommend buying any lg phone even if it is a nexus device.
Do you plan on staying with Verizon and what type of plan do you have with them? Hell if you could spare the cash, find an s3 for sale locally and save that upgrade.

I have to stick with Verizon. My plan is through a company. I don't believe the Note 2 will ever come to Verizon.
I am not as petrified of LG as most of you, but I'm also not content with it either.
To those of you basically saying I am an Apple fanboy or iOS junkie, thats just simply false. I only bought the iPhone 4 because of how frustrated I was at Samsung with its Fascinate support and the speed at which Android released new firmwares that were incompatibile with almost every phone except the Nexus.
I cannot stand iOS, I just didn't feel like shelling out $600+ while under contract for a phone that saw less support (albeit with more features than the iPhone).
I am worried about spending my contract on the GS3 because Key Lime Pie is due out soon, and technically the S3 doesn't even have Jelly Bean yet.
I know a KLP rom will be out but I would prefer a KLP based rom.
If you're a tech enthusiast, I don't think you need us to talk you into it. Look at the stats, make up your own mind. Think for yourself.
Obviously you come into this forum you're going to get skewed results. Go into an iPhone forum and tell them you're thinking of switching to Android and see what their consensus is.
That being said, I have had zero problems with my SIII and I don't think I'll have any regrets about buying it until I'm eligible for a new phone.
The advancements that have been made in Android the past 1.5-2 years are incredible to say the least.

[Q] Captivate Slide on AT&T or T-Mobile and other general Q's

Hello everyone!
I'm looking for a new phone since my Epic 4G is finally biting the dust. Of course I'd like to stick with a QWERTY keyboard phone so the Captivate Glide may be my next choice! I did have a few questions though:
Ideally I am looking for an unlocked Captivate Glide to use on a monthly AT&T or T-Mobile plan. I hate contracts and I'm looking to travel internationally in the next few years so having a GSM phone will help in that aspect. Is anyone on either of those networks?
How do you all find the battery life typically? On stock or custom?
This phone is looking to be a good replacement for my Epic and I'm interested to hear your feedback
My absolute honest opinion... for the money I paid this phone delivers, its got a dual core processor good screen lots of memory .. the keyboard, however, leaves much to be desired... now my opinion is based on having come from a blackberry bold, the keyboard was awesome. Because of the touch and the keys being so close together I was able to roll my fingers across the keyboard to complete words and rock it back and forth to complete other words.. IE: I'd roll my thumb from e to r to e again to complete spelling there etc.
With the captivate glide keyboard, not only does it take a bit to depress the keys but they are so far apart and I've found I've had a difficult time moving from key to key because of it. As well, once you have a hard case on, its difficult to get to the keys on the top row.
I find myself using the on screen keyboard and only flipping to the physical when I get frustrated with typos (as I was used to on my Galaxy Ace which has only a 3.5" screen .. it was murder trying to type).
Part of me wonders if I should have gotten a Galaxy SII for the interim... I really wanted to get an SIII but there were no free phone offers so I settled on the Glide.
Other negative part is it has a very small user base so the forums here are fairly quiet and only a couple of people are developing for this device. This means things like CyanogenMOD (CM10) and Jellybean, proper ICS builds are a lot slower to come by ... and it is possible that we may not ever see JB on our phones ... Dman appears to be the only person coding JB for our phones, TheGreaterGood has solidified a great ICS rom now (literom 0.8.4) so we have an ICS build improved upon by the most recently released ATT build.
Battery life is good, I get a full day and some out of it, come night time after about 14 hours I'm often at critical but understand I have 2 email accounts in push mode all day, wifi on all day cruising and connecting to various hot spots throughout my clients across the city and I'm in varied coverage areas. (A couple of my clients are in rural area's). This is with my GPS turned off.
My phone was purchased for Rogers network - I dumped them as a provider and switched to Virgin Mobile. I paid the $15 and unlocked my phone using the download util from FastGSM. My phone has NEVER come unlocked and I've flashed numerous roms in GingerBread ICS and JellyBean. There are threads explaining how to unlock for free but personally the 2 minute and guarantee that it would unlock my phone (I unlocked my galaxy ace as well) was worth my time savings
My advice - Find one, play with it. Type up a whole couple-3 paragraphs using the on screen keyboard and the slide out keyboard. I read that I should do that somewhere and I didnt.
I miss the feel of my Ace in one hand with a rubber sleeve on it. I could spin it around and feel it comfortable in my hand, wrap my fingers around it. This one, because of the slider, It feels like it may falll out of my hand easier and there doesn't seem to be an ability to fluently type with one hand (such a drag when driving )
Don't get me wrong, I'm still happy with my purchase but I would have spent far less hours playing with a Galaxy SII tweaking it and trying to get it customized because there is so much more support for it. Not to mention having Google NOW.
I also came from the Epic. It is a little bit different of a phone, but it is much faster, in my experience. It has a dual-core Tegra 2 and an 8 MP camera -- two nice selling points. It also can support a 64 microSDXC card -- I have one in mine and it's awesome.
However, a few drawbacks too -- the top row from the Epic on the keyboard (the numbers) are missing -- we only have a 4 row keyboard. You have to use the alt key to get numbers. Not a super big deal, but takes some getting used to. Also, there is no notification light to my knowledge, either. So don't expect a flashing light to tell you if you have a new email, etc. The final "frustration" is that it is hard to find decent cases for this. Dev's aren't entirely consistent on this device, like they are with the Epic -- We haven't had any "stable" releases of ICS/JB, aside from mods on the stock -- CM support isn't quite there yet. CWM doesn't support external SD's. I guess we were a bit spoiled in the Epic forums. I may be taking a stab at getting external SD support with CWM... and maybe then working on CM support... but we'll see -- have a lot on my plate and I'm not a Java developer by trade (but I am a programmer with over 20 years experience in other languages relevant).
It's a little slimmer and feels a bit sturdier/compact than the Epic, but more or less the exact same size (but different rounding on the corners).
You can pick one up BRAND NEW from NewEgg -- and then unlock it. I got mine for $200 with free shipping, etc, from NewEgg on a sale. Just watch out for it and make sure you're paying attention to the "sales" and coupons, so you know the true price of it -- mine was listed at $225 with a $25 instant rebate (shown right next to the title of it). It was supposedly unlocked (but it's not) -- so I had to buy an unlock code -- and it worked flawlessly. If you look in this forum, you should see a review I posted about it.
I think the phone has a lot of promise, but we need a bit better support. Some things that are important seem overlooked. That being said, it seems like the remaining tasks are pretty simple. Unlike the Epic, which received support for data as one of the last things on the phone -- the Glide got it as one of the first things -- but the physical keyboard isn't working perfectly. Weird nuances like that.
Again, we are lucky to have developers who spend their free time on this -- and anything they've already done can be appreciated. I just wish we had a few others in here who would take up some more of the work and try to fix it, when one of our dev's is working on a side-project, like we did with the Epic.
All-in-all, feels like a good phone to upgrade to. Pretty happy with it. I got an empire case off of Amazon for about $5 and it fits better than the Seidio I have on my Epic. Just ROM support seems a little weak at the moment compared to the Epic.
Wow, thank you both for such detailed responses. One of the things I look for as well is the community that supports the phone which you've both demonstrated is pretty damn good regardless of custom ROM support. Thanks!
The price is the main constriction on whatever phone I plan on purchasing. Next is GSM, then the speed, keyboard, SD card slot, etc. Starting with the price, the new phones are so goddamn expensive! I don't think I could justify spending $600 phone and I really don't want to be on a contract; I'm hoping to do a month to month on either T-Mobile or AT&T. The newer phones are all dropping some of the best features (IMO): keyboard and SD slots. The reason I'm considering this phone is because it's basically the Epic just beefed up!
There are a couple other phones I was comparing this to: Droid 3 and the Mytouch 4G Slide. To be honest, the Captivate Glide has CM9 and CM10 in beta which would be enough custom rom swapping for me. I really want a solid daily driver that isn't going to crash or give me many problems. Any thoughts?

I was using a Droid 3 when Rogers offered me this phone for free to re-up on my plan. The heft and feel of the D3 was awesome. Lots of metal, it felt super solid. The keyboard was also great. I'm a big fan of the Droid line (my favourite phone still is the original Droid [I wish I could get another one with a bigger screen and updated insides]) because I love the look and the build quality was great. Also, the HDMI out was sometimes handy.
That being said, the screen on the Glide blows the D3 out of the water. I forget the specifics of the Droid 3 screen, but immediately after I got it home, I noticed that it had a distractingly pixelly screen. The glide also has a full gig of ram as opposed to 512mb and that was a nice upgrade. The battery on the Glide is ever so slightly bigger (1500mah on the D3, 1650mah on the Glide).
While the keyboard on the glide is not as good as the one on the D3, I have no problems touch typing while walking and glancing at my screen periodically. Having all 4 android buttons on the keyboard is also a nice touch. The Glide has a springy mechanism like old qwerty feature phones to pop out the keyboard, whereas the D3, you have to manually push it the whole way. I wouldn't say either is better... just different feel.
As much as the glide rom scene isn't as robust as some phones (don't get me wrong, the guys we have are absolutely awesome), the stagnant development scene for the Droid 3 is what made me switch. Two words: Locked Bootloader. ICS was kind of running on it when I left in July, minus a whole bunch of things (notably the camera). And I skimmed through that forum the other day when I was feeling like busting out the D3 for a couple of days for nostalgia; it doesn't look like a whole lot has changed. Flashing roms on the glide is the pinnacle of convenience. Flashing and running roms on the D3 involved crazy workarounds that slowed the boot time and restricted us to using a GB kernel with heavily modified ICS. Although, I hear there's been some luck in getting unsigned kernels to work, there's still a LOT of driver work that has to be done from scratch to get ICS fully working with the D3's just-good-enough internals.
That's about all I can say about these two phones. I'm no dev and by no means did I look incredibly far into the D3 situation so I could be way off base, but that's how it looked to me.
Well, here's the deal with that, then:
Yes, this phone is way better than the Droid 3/4, in my opinion. I like the keyboard on the Droid better, but this phone has WAY better support and chances for it.
If you want to go month-to-month, consider using StraightTalk -- I have StraightTalk using AT&T's network (since that is what is officially supported here -- since 1900 isn't being supported by T-Mobile yet). $45/month unlimited everything -- and here we don't have hidden data caps, it doesn't seem, so the negatives of the network aren't really there for StraightTalk.
I'm working with the guy who originally ported CWM for our phone (not Aquethys -- utkanos) to make a CWM that ACTUALLY works 100% (currently ours doesn't support external_sd, even though it lists it -- it always fails to see it). Once I have that done, I'll probably be playing around with building CM10 and trying to fix some of the bugs that Team Glide has yet to do. I have no experience with Android development -- but I do have a lot of experience with programming in general -- so hopefully I will be able to get something working. Only thing is that CM10 is a big, nasty compile -- and I'm just using a VM right now, which isn't as powerful as true dedicated hardware. I'll probably have to get a monster server to start real development, but my funds are low. So, depending on how painful and annoying VM development is, I may stop working on anything after the CWM. We'll see what happens!
My very non-dev take on this phone, after having it a year now: My previous phone was a Droid1, which was a pretty good device (very durable) but I definitely grew tired of its sluggish performance, even while running CM7 on it. I was never a fan of the Droid1 keyboard, and I think the Glide is a huge improvement between the 2. No question the keys are a bit flat and widely spaced, but I think they work well once you're used to them. The lack of a dedicated number row is annoying, but manageable.
My biggest annoyance after the Droid1 is the lack of a LED notification light on the Glide. But that just is what it is. Other small gripes are the lack of a good case option (as far as I've seen), since the all-plastic construction of the Glide is rather slippery in your hand. The back cover looks nice and stays on tight during normal operation, but a minor drop seems to make it fly off, causing the battery to fly out, and you're standing there gathering the pieces of your phone and re-assembling it like a buffoon. At least I've been there a few times.
The development support for this phone in the last few months has been great. I was really bummed for quite some time after getting it to see very little support. LiteROM has been a really solid variation of the stock Samsung/AT&T ROM, with version 0.8.4 seeming to be essentially flawless in the last few days I've had it running. I know CM10 is a huge project, but with LiteROM running so well, I really have no need for anything else.
I will likely hang onto this phone after my AT&T contract is up in a year, and also go to StraightTalk. Maybe T-mobile will get their frequencies straight and I'll have the option to give them a whirl next year. AT&T service works pretty well in my area, so at least I know I will continue to get that coverage.
The only other thing that bothers me about this phone is the low ppi of the screen. It looks rather pixelated at times until you zoom into things. Do yourself a favor and definitely don't even glance at a new iPhone screen before checking out the Glide. I think that's the only feature that will eventually convince me to replace the Glide, if someone (Samsung or Moto) comes out with a high-quality GSM slider with a high ppi screen. But it seems phones with physical keyboards get less and less attention, and the Glide might be one of the last good GSM offerings for a while.
