I broke the LCD display on my beloved Desire. I ordered and received a new one. When I disassembled my Desire I realized that I have a Samsung version and new one is Sony version display. Now I am interesting in whether are these two versions compatible or do I have to order a new Samsung version screen. Thank you.
It's normal. Samsung screen it's amoled but it went out of production, you'll find it only on the first generation of HTC Desire (dating back almost 2 years ago), the second, and more recent, desire generation is equipped with Sony screen, that is SLCD

this month I am due an upgrade to phone contract with Orange UK and I am mixed between 3 phones and I was wondering what other think this is my list in preferance order:
1, HTC Desire either in brown or black
2, Samsung Galaxy S
3, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (the large one)
I have them in that preferance because I am a bit of new fan of HTC being a fairly new user (1-2 months) so I put that first preferance, the Samsung I put that as second as that seems more popular then the SE and the SE as third as I used to like the walkman features of SE in the past and the possible fact of the 8MP camera (which isn't really a feature I would use everyday).
Also my preferance to HTC is because of the fact that changing the firmware is more possible and also better customiseable.
I would go for a Desire HD but it isn't available on Orange UK yet
Does the Desire HD feature SLCD or LCD diplay?
Thanks for helping.
Best Regards,
Alin
It was assumed to have an SLCD display but now noted to have a standard LCD screen, although with 16M colour reproduction and a more vibrant screen than my old HD2 (side-by-side comparison)

Hello Alin, Merry christmas to you,
LCD is more general the common name for the family. SLCD is a special form of LCD.
And the Desire HD has a SLCD display.

Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too!

No, Desire HD has standard TFT LCD screen.
Source: newer sources on the internet + my friend has Desire Z which comes with SLCD and the quality is noticeable better, colours are much deeper and picture is really crisp..
Shame they couldn't do it with Desire HD..
However, I must add that despite the fact it's LCD, the picture on DHD is very good anyway, and generally it's the best phone made so far. I really love it.

DHD is SLCD the fact that the screen is bigger while maintaining the 480x800 resolution makes the color reproduction worse than the SLCD Desire and Desire Z.
Screen: 4.3-inch 480×800 at 218 ppi(0.38 Megapixels) WVGA TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen
taken from wikipedia, anyway i looked on desire HD oficial site and it says just WVGA Screen, i think if it would have a SLCD they would write because it can be a marketing thingy...so i`m 99% that is normal LCD not SLCD, i guess best way is to email htc support and ask
It is LCD on every Deside "HD" sold worldwide
In Denmark HTC has confirmed that it is indeed LCD and not SLCD. And this goes for every Desire HD worldwide.
The biggest mobile operator in DK - TDC - has gone public and is promising every Desire HD customer a complete refund due to have falsely claimed it was SLCD.
(Sorry, cannot link because I am new user and thus are not allowed to have links in my messages yet).
I believe SLCD doesn't say it is better than LCD.
Have a look:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-LCD
It is SLCD, but this does not mean it is better than LCD (the same).
Desire Z has a smaller screen so.......

Desire HD SLCD or LCD Display
folks...the desire hd being sold here in india atleast have an s-lcd screen & not lcd..
Contacted customer care and they confirmed that all desire HDs (post firmware 1.32.720) carry an S-LCD 24bit panel from sharp....They stated that the initial launch models had an LCD panel from sharp altho wid 16M colors..
I am very happy wid my desire HD. Infact its the best smartphone I have owned. period. To me SLCD or no SLCD it still gives very crsip natural looking colors compared to both my original desire (AMOLED) & iphone 3GS

I was wondering that is there any way to dig in to the hardware specs through the phone itself, rooted of course, in order to get the specs right, at least for that particular device?
On the other hand imo there really is no actual point in this debate as the screen is great. Ok if you put it side-by-side with an iphone4 or some superAMOLED screen you'll see the difference but when used separately there's no such impact. Just crank it up to auto brightness and its just fine in any conditions. I've got some of my friends with iphone 3gs complimenting the screen: It's so BIG, and bright! Haha! Just my 2 cents
here said Desire HD uses Super LCD
i am assuming type of display could be basic on different regions
just like the Nexus S

hi i had a desire when it first came out , and then went iphone route, i am considering desire again but wonder if it would be updated with new sense ui etc that i read about on new desire models ie the hd and z . what differences could i expect , including android updates many thanks
No new sense until HTC releases official update.
Oh, and a year ago was before Samsung realized how good screen they made. After that they decided to f HTC in the a, so now you would get SLCD instead of AMOLED.

They didn't f HTC in the a, they just couldn't make AMOLED screens fast enough for HTC since HTC had 3 models that were being made at the same time more or less and they all used AMOLED screens. So they had to use SLCD screens as a compromise.
Anyway, no point in getting the original Desire now really since Desire S is coming out and will be better. Desire S also comes with 2.3.(x) I think so Sense would be updated. Where as Desire gets 2.3 update in Q2.
I must say bah to the iPhone.
There has been a few updates to the os most notably 720p video recording.

I'd say go for the HD Desire.
I have the old Desire. My friend has the HD. My word, its a beautiful phone. The screen is massive.
Compare the two on GSMarena.
Hi all gonna replace my HTC Desire its been great and I am keen to stay with this size device. What would people recommended? The LG seems good but its froyo and I don't really want to go back from gingerbread. Currently running vanilla gingerbread so be happy if I can just run that. Also I tend to flash different roms now and again so a good scene on here would be great.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
Thanks
Hi mate,
i've got the LG Optimus 2X (P990)
Amazing phone - so fast - and Gingerbread will be released for it in a month or so.
Another great thing about it is that it actually handles 32GB microsd cards

Thanks,
What is the battery life like? don't suppose you had a desire beforehand ?
I would take the Nexus S, pure Google-Phone - 4", similar to Samsung Galaxy S.
I own the Desire HD, 4.3" screen but amazing once you put a custom rom on it.
I would definitely look at something with the dual-core Tegra chipset.
Phones with 3.7 - 4 - 4.3 inch screens that are available now:
HTC Desire S (the successor to the original Desire). (3.7 inch screen, like orig Desire).
HTC Desire HD (successor to the HD2 (runs WM6.5), but runs Android).
Samsung Galaxy S (what I have right now).
Samsung Galaxy S2 (only available in Europe right now).
HTC Incredible S/HTC Droid Incredible 2 (in USA).
Motorola Atrix. (has Motoblur, and locked bootloader, meaning no custom ROMs yet).
Samsung/Google Nexus S (no MicroSD card slot).
LG Optimus 2x/LG G2x (in USA).
Sony Xperia Arc. (one of the thinnest smartphones avilable).
Sony Xperia Play (PlayStation certified).
Or the new HTC Sensation, which is what I'd like, but it's unreleased right now.
Don't forget the
HTC Glacier (aka T-Mobile myTouch 4g) (3.8" screen) (in USA)
I've got it and it does everything I've ever needed to do with it even though I haven't gotten around to rooting it yet.
its to my understanding that the desire comes in slcd or s/amoled screens but wen i look in settings/about phone/hardware it says i have wvga screen...can someone elaborate??
Original Desires had AMOLED until about august 2010, all new Desires from then on are SLCD
so wat does the wvga mean...do i have slcd
If you bought your phone brand new after August 2010 then you will have SLCD most likely. WVGA is like a sub type of screen. Correct me if I'm wrong. All you need to worry about is AMOLED or SLCD.
WVGA just means it's 800x480. It says nothing about the type of screen it is.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Year screen type i not specified anywhere in the software. There is of course a difference in the drivers, however the newer firmwares after slcd release support both screen types so this was only a problem in the beginning when people flashed amoled firmware on slcd phones, so it should not be a concern to you. And if you did buy it after august 2010 it is VERY likely to be slcd.
WVGA has nothing to do with type. It is just the std name for 800*480 pixel resolution.
What I understand, about why the AMOLED went SLCD, was that
Samsung made HTCs screens, until they realised that they have
some good screens, and wanted to keep that advantage to themselves.
Cant blame them for that. Samsung has very good screens,
but they lack HTCs development such as the sence part.
In comparesence samsung screens (and Desires AMOLED)
are a bit better in bright light environment, aka sunlight.
I got the SLCD and its hard to se anything on the screen,
on a sunny day.
Wanna find out wich screen U got?
http://pocketnow.com/android/how-to-tell-if-your-htc-desire-has-slcd-or-amoled-screen
"Check the box your Desire came with at the section Display: if it states "3.7 inch AMOLED touch-sensitive screen" then you've got an AMOLED display but if it says "3.7-inch touch-sensitive screen" then you've got an SLCD display."
My to cents...
So what's qvga? I know there are more like that.
Sent from CM7
Ok thaNX FOR the help...I bought it after Aug 2010 so I say iv got docs...and on the box it only says 3.7 touch sensitive screen
