this month I am due an upgrade to phone contract with Orange UK and I am mixed between 3 phones and I was wondering what other think this is my list in preferance order:
1, HTC Desire either in brown or black
2, Samsung Galaxy S
3, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (the large one)
I have them in that preferance because I am a bit of new fan of HTC being a fairly new user (1-2 months) so I put that first preferance, the Samsung I put that as second as that seems more popular then the SE and the SE as third as I used to like the walkman features of SE in the past and the possible fact of the 8MP camera (which isn't really a feature I would use everyday).
Also my preferance to HTC is because of the fact that changing the firmware is more possible and also better customiseable.
I would go for a Desire HD but it isn't available on Orange UK yet

Hi all gonna replace my HTC Desire its been great and I am keen to stay with this size device. What would people recommended? The LG seems good but its froyo and I don't really want to go back from gingerbread. Currently running vanilla gingerbread so be happy if I can just run that. Also I tend to flash different roms now and again so a good scene on here would be great.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
Thanks
Hi mate,
i've got the LG Optimus 2X (P990)
Amazing phone - so fast - and Gingerbread will be released for it in a month or so.
Another great thing about it is that it actually handles 32GB microsd cards

Thanks,
What is the battery life like? don't suppose you had a desire beforehand ?
I would take the Nexus S, pure Google-Phone - 4", similar to Samsung Galaxy S.
I own the Desire HD, 4.3" screen but amazing once you put a custom rom on it.
I would definitely look at something with the dual-core Tegra chipset.
Phones with 3.7 - 4 - 4.3 inch screens that are available now:
HTC Desire S (the successor to the original Desire). (3.7 inch screen, like orig Desire).
HTC Desire HD (successor to the HD2 (runs WM6.5), but runs Android).
Samsung Galaxy S (what I have right now).
Samsung Galaxy S2 (only available in Europe right now).
HTC Incredible S/HTC Droid Incredible 2 (in USA).
Motorola Atrix. (has Motoblur, and locked bootloader, meaning no custom ROMs yet).
Samsung/Google Nexus S (no MicroSD card slot).
LG Optimus 2x/LG G2x (in USA).
Sony Xperia Arc. (one of the thinnest smartphones avilable).
Sony Xperia Play (PlayStation certified).
Or the new HTC Sensation, which is what I'd like, but it's unreleased right now.
Don't forget the
HTC Glacier (aka T-Mobile myTouch 4g) (3.8" screen) (in USA)
I've got it and it does everything I've ever needed to do with it even though I haven't gotten around to rooting it yet.
So Rogers said i can get a new phone on their retention deal thingies, they basically said i can get any phone i want for the price of the promotion price + a 3 year contract ( not loosing my original plan). I was looking at the Nexus S, but then decided against it because its kinda outdated and well i dont know...im still thinking about it ( i love modding).
My questions is how are the new sony products.....im coming from a motrolla droid > Samsung galaxy s > Htc Desire Z. Now im looking for a new phone cause my HTC broke.
In comparing the Arc vs the PRO(expected released is End of July early August in Canada) what is better? i personally want a qwerty keyboard, but if someone can explain why Sony products are bettter now since the X10 days? Will we be getting all the new android updates in a Favorable time manor? not like 1 year after like the x10s?
Last question how is the rooting and rom development for all 3 new xperia phones? any breakthroughs? Should i buy it through Rogers or should i just fork out the money for a unlocked bootloader? for a pro, or arc. Sighhh, decisions decisions. thanks for any tips
TLDR: Arc vs Pro vs Nexus S vs SGS II
i hated samsung since my SGS basically died and the customer support turned me off. Sony because of their imcomptent plans to release updates after foreverrrr, has that changed?
The arc, neo and play where released with gingerbread 2.3.2. In the last 2 weeks the updates to 2.3.3 where launched. 2.3.4 is expected in fall 2011. So, yes updates are coming and it seams SE has not forgotten their customers. If you buy an unbranded phone, you can root it even with 2.3.3. With a branded phone you can root a 2.3.2 phone via gingerbreak, but not 2.3.3 since it needs an unlocked bootloader and bootloaders can only unlocked with unbranded devices.
Unfortunately there are no custom ROMs yet, but CyanogenMod7 is in the works. It may take a while until its released, but devs are working on it.
None! Go with galaxy s2 or htc sensation! You won't be happy with the sony

the only company out of those two i would go for is HTC, Samsung has terrible customer service and due to the dreaded internal sd failure on the SGS models....i just dont trust them. Im looking at SONY now because apparently they are learning from the past and releasing updates quicker, and now with the unlocked bootloaders, i would assume that we can get the newest android updates alot faster....then what sony would have planned. i dont know....
Haven't had much experience on the Pro - but it's obviously going to be pretty much same as Arc but with a hard keyboard - so if that's important to you then the Pro would be more for you.. The Arc (which is what I have).. is an awesome bit of kit and is right up there with the best of them.. performance wise there's not much in it between the Arc and the "dual core" phones now being released.. SE will be releasing timely updates they've confirmed it.. and proven it by releasing the 2.3.3. update 2 months after the phones release.. along with a load of other UI changes too.. the Devs will come in time, if you're into ROM's.. if you're into doing your own mods then suggest you try to get an unbranded one so you can unlock the Bootloader - it does have a downside though.. it removes the DRM stuff so things like track id doesn't work, nor does the new "click on the like button" when listening to music..

thanks alot buddy! no where when i researched it did it say anything about the drm and track id stuff for unbranded phones! thats good to know. I guess, i will give Sony a shot. Hope updates are strong. and i want to root it and customize it so ill decide between locked or unlocked bootloader.
I am a proud user of LG Optimus one which s a fabulous phone due to dev support here @ XDA. I am thinking of buying Desire. I have few questions.
1. I am an audiophile . So i need an in ear earphones for Desire. Is ther any?
2. How s the dev support for Desire. Does it support well known roms such as oxygen, cm and MIUI?
3. I read bad news about the Sunlight legibility, battery and build quality of Desire. Any comments?
4. Does Desire have any other problems?
Thanks guyz. Awaiting response.
1. Supplied one is not in ear. You can (have to) buy separately any std (3.5 mm)
2. Dev support is very good. One of the best as Desire is HTC best product for 2010 and early 2011
3. Build quality is great better than any galaxy series, Battery is user specific - I dont find it terrible. Yes in direct sun light I find display little dull.
4. Desire have low internal memory so if you like more app you need to root, create ext partition and SD card and install any custom ROM. if you are planning to do that anyways its not a problem.
I am using desire since 1.5 years without any problem and tried many available ROM doing great for me, but I advice you to look for other options as Desire is old product and almost all users are in their end of their cycle. I dont know your buying preference but if you list down everyone can help you suggest more models.
I am looking to buy desire because i found it at an offer price of 15300 INR. I think there is no other good models compared to desire @ this price range. Am i right? Or is ther any?
So you want something for budget of 15000.
1. I just got Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo for 14750 (With out bill) which is twice better than my Desire. Neo V even goes 1000 Rs less.
2. Motorola Defy+ in 15500-16000
3. I am not sure but check Samsung Galaxy i9003 something which is also around 16000
4. There is one LG model also in 13000, cant remember name.
What are the disadvantages of desire. is defy+ better than desire ?
Without bill is without warranty right ? What if the product fails ? Warranty ?
Comparison of Desire and Defy+
Desire released in March 2010 while Defy+ in Sept 2011. Recent product so they will get official update.
Better CPU and GPU and double ROM.
Its dust and water proof.
1700 battery instead of 1400.
Those are the advantages of Defy+ over Desire.

Yes without bill is without warranty.
Let me explain how that works for me giving you example by my Neo purchase.
Neo officially available at around 18000+ and without bill it is 14750. So difference is 3000+ rs.
When they sell they give you demo and you can check and later you pay. If something wrong later also it wont cost me 3000 for sure. And I almost bought around 8-10 handset in last 3-4 years for my friends and family without bill and did not get complain.
And when you buy android handset and you root it your warranty is gone anyways.
So you have to decide its risk worth or not. Sometime bad luck is enough

You know root is reversible?
Hey,
Has there been any rumours of late of a decent replacement to the HTC Desire Z / G2 with a QUERTY keyboard and MicroSD card slot?
Although I love the DZ (and the Android System) I am starting to see performance defects with using multiple apps - being a bit of a power user as I am .
Sadly HTC have decided to give up making QUERTY phones so I hope some company with make a phone to the same or exceeds the standard HTC made.
Thanks,
dounowhoiam

The terrible keyboard on the G2 cured me of my reliance on a QWERTY keyboard.
Recent phones from HTC has cured me of any loyalty I had for them (after having a G1 and a G2)
If I were to get a new phone today it would absolutely be an SIII.
I'd say currently the only actual available upgrade to the G2 is the Motorola DROID 4:
1.2 GHz Dual-core CPU
1 GB of RAM
16 GB internal storage (plus MicroSDHC slot)
1080p video
HDMI port
- mcsmart
Give large screen phones a go, the keybaord is easy to use there and to be honest sometimes faster to use (swype anyone).

Unfortunately no. This is something I am obssessed with following (had the G1 back in the day) and love the tradpad, qwerty combination on an android. There has been several rumors and wisphers but nothing solid. And it looks like google is moving more against qwerty (gnex has basically no physical buttons), and HTC had publicaly said no more qwerty's.
The droid 4 might be the closet match but I am not a fan. I tried the keyboard at VZ, not impressed (although Im currently spoiled by the best qwerty on a bb 9900), and its bootlocked.
I second waterscent, I actually liked the gnex at VZ so much I am seriously considering upgrading to it. Either that or the G2. I might just get a G2 and hold until my dream phone.
Either way I have basically made TONS of posts about this, g2 replacement idea. Check out my username and other posts/threads I have made about it..
Hi Guys.
I'm complete noob with an old phone HTC Desire Z that uses Android 2.3 (newest available for the phone). Recently most of the apps I was used to use started to be incompatible with my system.
I read about new Android Go edition which should be targeted for low end phones with poor hardware. Checking the minimum hw requirements it seems that HTC Desire Z comply with it.
Is there any possibility to flash and use Android Go in this phone (after some of the system magic whith you guys from this forum handle)?
The reason why I don't want to buy a new phone is that I really need the hw querty keyboard that dissapeared from smartphones these days.
Thank you very much for any hint.
