webcam app for overnight surveillance - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

hello all, just wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with webcam/secuity apps and if they had any recommendations or tips. basically im wanting to take one of my extra android phones so i don't have to use my s3 and put it in my window aimed to my front yard. id really like to have it record constantly through the entire night over my wifi and save to one of my pc's. something is tearing my yard up at night, either the lil neighborhood kids or animals or an army of mole crickets. i don't wanna go the motion route incase it is mole crickets that is why im looking to go the record entire night avenue. any suggestions on an app that seems to fit the build would be greatly appreciated. thanks

There's one app that completely turns your phone's camera into a webcam, i had one where the cable had to be connected but now a days might even be wireless. Something like this might work for you. Then have your computer record the webcam feed using a recording software like manycam or Cyberlink or something like that.

You know what, there are a lot of cool apps like the one i posted. here is the entire search list i did on the play sstore.

It's not going to work. Any phone camera won't pick up enough light in the dark to get a clear picture. The easiest way is to buy a webcam and USB extension cord and just use the computer.
Another method is to make a Skype name like dkdhsbj18374 and set it to auto accept video chat. That's for survelliance from a remote location. You can also start the Skype video and use a screen recorder on your PC. Still the quality will be garbage in low light though.

i do appreciate the first set of info u gave. would you happen to remember the app name you were referring to? as for the play store search list thanks but i had already tried that approach only to find so many and it seems as if the user comments never correctly reflect the apps rating. that's why i figured it would be good to ask here and get a more xda-ish recommendation as we seem to hold way higher standards than average joe in the market with a comment like " f#c#kn sucks! Fc on ny G1" or "eh, its ok. best freakin app ever! FTW!" but thanks for your help.

hahah yeah thats true! I blame the market, they dont allow you to type a lot.
But i cant remember the exact name, not to mention the quality was horrible. This was maybe like 4 years ago when i had my Touch pro 2. But i just downloaded DroidCam last night and its freaking awesome. Love the option to have the light on, plus the quality is phenomenal!
Just tested out IPWebcam and its really cool. Best feature: being able to turn screen off and still use it. Its browswer based, you can put the URL into a media player and stream the contents, or you can right click and click save as to record the contents. Live latency is really horrible but might be because of my wifi. But once its recorded its all synced up. Actually am going to use this to see into places i normaly cant, like when working on my car Thanks for having me discover this

Camera and lighting issues aside, iSpy will do time lapse recording on a schedule (very configurable), and it is free so long as you don't need their online features (remote access, sms/email alerts upon motion detection, etc). It has by far the most options of any PC based surveillance software I've found.

Three issues / questions : AVRCP, Panoramic Shots, Sense Crashes

I've got three questions for this terrific community, hopefully somebody has either noticed them and fixed them as well or might be able to help otherwise. Not rooted. Thanks in advance for your assistance!
1. AVRCP : After initially testing out great, my stereo bluetooth headset's controls no longer seem to control my music. Using a Southwing SA505 headset and the basic Sense music application. Music still plays through the headset fine, I just can't control it using the buttons on it. Has anybody had similar experiences?
2. Panoramic Camera Shots : Not technically a problem, but coming from a Touch Pro, I was just wondering if anybody knew of a way to get this functionality working on the otherwise superior camera app on the EVO. As I recall, it wasn't enabled by default on Winmo either and had to be reg hacked in.
3. Sense Crashes : No huge deal, but worth asking. My presumption is that perhaps I'm using ATK and being too aggressive, I usually get crashes when manually killing processes, but since ATK remembers what I've excluded I don't understand why it just happens sometimes and not others. Any suggestions on processes I should avoid killing in order to avoid this?
Thanks again all!
I'm going to be that guy and tell you to get rid of ATK. It does more bad than good.
Let's kill the ATK deal before it gets started. It works for some, not for others...let him decide. When you have basically no 3rd party apps installed and still see a nice smoothness change when running atk, it's hard to argue against it. But like I said, some people are not seeing any difference, so just let it be.
1. AVRCP: I an using a Motorola T505 with no problems. I can use the controls on the unit to Pause, NextSong, PrevSong, etc.
3. ATK: Sounds like it is killing more than it should. I run ATK several times a day with no crashes ever. I have had my Evo since June 4th.
May want to try to hold off on using ATK for a few days to ensure that something else is not crashing HTC Sense.
Good luck!
I use AVRCP on my Jabra BT3030 and so far it works great. Only really used it with Last.fm but it pauses, and skips fine
Thanks to all for their responses so far!
Re: ATK, yeah...I may be a little too quick with it, I've got it set on 'Safe' auto-kill on screen-off and it rarely if ever crashes Sense there, it seems to be when I do it on my own. I do it out of a desire to save battery life, surprise surprise, but I think I will back off.
Re: the AVRCP, what makes it extra odd is that it worked for me on the first day and not since! I was pumped when it worked, it made that 'out of box experience' extra nice when 'things just worked' lol, now...not so much.
Nobody else notice the missing Panoramic shot ability or care? No deal breaker, but it was kind of cool on the TP and I had hoped with the increased capabilities of the hardware and of Android that it might be even cooler now on the EVO, perhaps HTC just completely did away with it?
I absolutely loved the panoramic mode on my former HTC Diamond. I've been looking for an app that does it as well and have found nothing.... let me know if you do - thanks!
The Andropan app says it can take panoramic pictures.

@iKimodragon : Thanks for the info! I'm downloading this now, though one of the comments within Market said that it crashed on EVO. I'll give it a try and report back. Re: my question about AVRCP, does anybody have any suggestions on how I might fix this issue even if they aren't having it themselves? Perhaps some kind of cache to clear, drain my headset comepletely, so on and so forth? Thanks again.
Update on Andropan : Unfortunately it appears as if the comment on the market that I read was right on target, the program ran but after taking the first picture froze and I received a 'force-close' message soon thereafter. Thanks for the suggestion though!
Hey, did you get anywhere as far as getting the AVRCP profile to work on your EVO again? Seems like there are a few others (as well as myself) suffering from this on the Beyond Pod forum as well. No answers yet.
One of the things that nagged at me as a plus for the Droid X was panoramic shots. They looked pretty good. My little 3.2 on the Raphael (fuze) could do panoramics and I really liked it. (Ironically my $400 Luminex doesn't do panoramics...ticks me off.) So my phone was the only way.
I'd love to see panoramic pics...not sure if it could ever be pulled out of the droid and set up for the evo. They both have same size cams...no idea if hardware is same.

Unfortunately I never did figure anything out, and as you can see within this thread, that quickly died, that nobody else ever offered any suggestions on that issue. Perhaps some renewed interest will drum up something, here's to hoping!

(If you're still using ATK)
When I was still using sense, and ATK, I had the HTC calendar widget running on a home screen, and I found that if I scrolled over and it loaded into memory, then I locked my screen (and ATK would auto kill apps) when I came back to the home screen it would have to reload everything.
So if you're using the HTC calendar widget, that's why sense is crashing, it's something with that. If you're not using it then I don't know what the problem is.
A good alternative to the calendar widget is Android Agenda Widget. Very customizable and I found it as a great replacement.

Rhyter,
Did you ever make progress on this?
I have same issue with 2 different headsets.
Apparently it has to do with the bluetooth controls being intercepted by a different program.
what is strange is that winamp did not have this problem. Winamp apparently set itself as the primary controller of AVRCP.
I have searched for a program that will let me control AVRCP without rooting the phone, but I haven't found any.
Anyone please help!!!
Thanks.

[Q] MMS Video sending

So, my first android phone was a droidx..and I just upgraded to the GN on Verizon. I am just now starting to learn what things on my droidx were "extra" stuf with "blur" apparently, and not baked into android...since I have never had a vanilla android device to compare it with until now.
So my issue. Apparently Blur had something added that would autoconvert video that you record to an acceptable size/resolution to go through as an mms message. Example: I take a 45 second clip at 720p of something. When i go to send it MMS, droidx would say you have to cut the video down to 30 seconds (which it would let me pick with a slider), then it would auto-shrink it, then attach to MMS, and send though just fine.
Sooooo....apparently vanilla android doesn't have this capability baked in? If I do the same thing as above, it simpyl says the video is beyond the limit...can't find any option to ACTUALLY edit it to make it within the limit.
so it appears I would have to know ahead of time when I go to take a video that I will want to MMS it at some point, and make sure and take that video at the lowest video settings and manually make sure I keep it short???? Or am I missing something?
If this is correct, can anyone point to an app that can take the place of what my droidx did...basically let me convert existing video on the fly so I can send as MMS...without hurting the original video of course??
I looked around, tried handcent (I like the stock texting app and really don't want to replace it)...but same thing, it wants me to retake the video using crap settings...not send an existing one recorded at 720p+
I CAN'T be the only person that actually does MMS video a lot?? And please, no suggestions on dropbox, etc. etc. I have people that aren't going to deal with that...they want a damn MMS video fast and quick for certain projects and I can't believe Android 4.0 might still lack a feature that other phones have been able to do since 2008??
Thanks.
Try using Movie Studio in ICS to edit the video to a sendable size.

I actually did not know that app existed lol. However, no..doesn't appear to help. I selected the lowest resolution (something like 860X480) and "low" quality...and it still produced a file size of 2MB for a 26 second clip and I got a "video can not be added" message when i tried to MMS it.
Thanks though, nice to know that app is built in.
bump bump bump (10 character minimum lol)
easiest way is to go into messaging app and click attach at the top. choose capture video. this will give you a countdown (1 min) for your size restriction so you don't have to think about it. also, you might have to turn off wifi to get it to send properly.

Thank you...that at least tells me how to make sure i am capturing a video in the proper format for MMS.
This still leaves a GAPING hole. I have to decide before I video something whether i want quality...or MMS...something I never had to have a trade-off on with my droidx, or my wife's iphone for that matter!!! I want to be able to record something my daughter does in 1080p...and then MMS it, or part of it, to a family memeber....just like i did EVERY OTHER DAY on my droidx.
Really? millions of cell phone users and I am the only one that uses MMS video?
i didnt think it was possible to send 1080p mms. that would put a big strain on vz infrastructure loads. it was possibly converting your droidx videos for mms without explicitly saying so, but i could be mistaken.

It DEFINITELY was..that's my point, this phone doesn't and I need to find a way to do that.
Otherwise I would need to record everything twice...once in HD to store for keeping and once again in crap-mode to MMS to someone.
If my daughter is taking her first steps, do I record in **** mode so I can MMS it...or 1080p to keep and then it's stuck on my phone until i can physically go drive to another state to show her grandparents who can't even spell dropbox or youtube.
EDIT: I realized my first sentence wasn't clear. when I say it "definitely was", I am agreeing with the statement "maybe the droidx was converting the videos first"...and was NOT implying that my droidx was in fact SENDING 1080p MMS video.
I'm sure there are sending limitations with this as well but larger than the MMS limitations, but is attaching the video to an email instead of MMS'ing it an option? I know this doesn't answer your MMS question, but perhaps it's an alternative until you find something acceptable for your use.
Not saying you're wrong, but I would be really surprised if the DX was sending HD videos over MMS without some handwaving (ie, transcoding to smaller size/quality) being done. The limitation isn't time, it's size and regardless of what medium you use to record HD video with (be it an actual camera, DX or the gnex), HD video isn't small and subsequently isn't meant to be sent over MMS in all honesty.

Maybe I should clarify since it sounds like i have come across wrong. my droidx DID NOT send HD video in MMS...what it did was allow me to SHRINK ON THE FLY video i took at 720p so that I COULD send it MMS. Obviously the MMS message it sent was of standard MMS quality/size.
With the nexus I appear to have no option to transcode automatically to fit MMS limitations like I did on the Droidx....that is my issue. Even If I could find a 3rd party app that handled this seamlessly...which I can't find...I would be okay.
As far as emailing, I have a 30 second clip at 720p and it is 28 MB...so the email app says the clip is too big as well...again, with no option to shrink it for me (which I wouldn't expect since I never had that on my droidx either).
My friends Incredible performs the same as my droidx did, so clearly HTC/Motorola are either adding this in and it STILL isn't part of vanilla android, or it's broken in ICS...or it was removed between gingerbread and ICS (most likely being that the blur/sense/etc. add it)
Either way, I can't believe nobody has written an app to do this functionality, since I assume ROMS based off AOSP also don't have this....and the fact that cleary it is possible to do since phones with skins have been doing it for years.
Yeah this is an annoyance of mine as well, thanks for making this thread

Looks like you have been through many more android phones than me. has the nexus been the only one that doesn't seem to have this feature for you?
maybe your best bet is to link a dropbox folder between you and the other person (if you primarily get/send mms with one person, like a spouse) then upload your HD video and tell the other person to watch it. that's how my wife and i do HD video of our young kids.

As I recall, this was a MotoBlur function on the DroidX, and wasn't in AOSP ROMs... For the GNex, unfortunately, I don't see any free apps that will shrink video on the market... but if recording the video at SD (480) is still too large and it means that much to you, I guess you could buy one of the apps on the market that shrinks video (some specifically for MMS).
Examples:
Video Compressor
Video Message Shrinker
VidTrim Pro

THANK YOU!
This is what I was looking for, some options! I agree that this function appears to have been a motoblur add-in, but since that was my first android it REALLY spoiled me.
Everything Else, I love the unskinned GN MUCH better.
I will look at those apps, I don't care if I have to buy an app...just as long as it would allow me to accomplish this goal...since sending MMS video like this is almost a daily routine now at work, and at home.
Anyone else with some app options...pay or not..let me know. Looking for something as easy as possible...a 1-click sort of solution.

Yeah, it was a bump with words...
Um, I got it to work briefly on the G1 just after cupcake and on Cyanogenmod, but it would default to slideshows with audio when the people finally did receive the file (yet still show as a perfectly fine video on my end); then Google "fixed" the issue by removing the feature for an update or two, and I don't think auto-video-cropping for MMS ever was present, the G1 had only a 3MP camera- and it was the same "too large" story on my N1 and beyond. I haven't had it able to send since, although I never really tried it with my Atrix (which should have had the Blur functionality). I will keep searching for a usable app though...

I downloaded video trim pro, and it looks like it could accomplish this, but during the transcoding it just stops before 100% and leaves you with a corrupt file.
The developer has a comment in there saying that the operating system might close the app for using too many resources, I have emailed him to see if there is a way to get around that...cause if so it looks like this is the best option I will have.

Wishlist / can this be fixed without days/weeks of research or will I have to switch?

Okay, so I made the jump from iPhone 4S to SGS3 T-999 at the beginning of September this year and my experience has been less than fun. Disregarding all the hardware issues, as far as software is concerned, I've been spending hours every day trying to find software that works reliably. Here's my rant of the biggest problems right now, if you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate hearing back! I was looking forward to digging into mods/hacks, etc on Android later down the road but with these basic functions that I depend on daily in my phone not there yet, I'm starting to wonder if I need to just switch back to iOS until Android is more developed. I actually used be on Android in the days of the S2 for about 2 months, but had to ultimately switch back to iOS because I simply didn't always have the time to download 20-30 clock apps to find one that works decently or test out mods and hacks for basic functions. Sure, it's fun to test try out mods and such but when your phone feels like it's broken, that's no good.
>Stock camera app doesn't allow taking pictures/video/flash at a certain level of battery. wtf, why samsung?! I have yet to find a camera app that does video/photo as well as the stock camera app.
>Image compression & resize tool for when e-mailing photos/images quickly...like in iOS would be great, or even something that actually works would be better. Note to Samsung--most people don't want or need to get an e-mail of your 8mp picture taken on your cell phone.
>Audiobook player that saves my spot
>Least buggy PDF reader with search, annotations and highlighting
>Tethering that works (no luck so far with fox fi and a few others, I'm using T-mobile MyMonthly 4G)
>File transfer over USB on my Mac (Latest version of lion, macbook pro 2.4ghz c2d pre-unibody)
>Find my iPhone equivalent with a web interface as opposed to just text message operation
>iOS clock app equivalent. I have downloaded probably more than 2 dozen timer/clock/alarm apps and none of them do it all while staying on in the background and not randomly closing. Also would be great if I didn't lose my timer if the app or phone has to be restarted/killed.
>Make a complete backup on my Mac instead of backing it up to my SD card and then having to copy that to my computer.
This list used be a lot longer...but with much sweat I have found some solutions or learned to cope, but not for everything that is vital^...

I don't understand what "basic" functions you are having issues with? Other than the camera not working after a certain %, it's not like a PDF reader with annotations and highlighting is a "basic" function.. nor are rely any of the other things on your list except maybe image compression.
That being said, I don't know a camera solution for Touchwiz but on AOSP there are no restrictions to when you can take a picture with regards to battery.
Repligo Reader is a great PDF reader. I don't know about search but I can highlight and annotate.
You need to download the app Android File Transfer to transfer via USB on your Mac.
If you're in Monthly4G, tethering is not included. This is an issue with your plan. If you want to tether, root your phone.
There are plenty of "find my android" apps out there, that work exceptionally well. I use Avast!.
AOSP also has a timer and stopwatch built in, so maybe you should try that.
You cannot backup your phone directly to your computer.
I am more than happy to help you, as I am sure most people here are, but I think you need to lower your expectations on "basic" features..

By basic, I guess I wasn't necessarily referring to all stock functions...but on the iPhone I found many apps on the App store that accomplished this task competently. Primarily I used Good reader, but there were others so it seemed like something that wouldn't be difficult to come across. I have found a few apps that provide such a function but end up missing others or are too buggy to use. I will have to check which apps specifically I tried with no success if that will help...will look into Repligo Reader, thanks!
As for tethering: I was able to get it to work on an S2 (i9100) running gingerbread using my MyMonthly4G plan using the native tethering feature. I've rooted my phone sucessfully but haven't gotten around looking into custom roms and such..still using stock (but rooted). If you or anyone here knows any especially good tethering solutions for rooted t-999 users running stock it'd be super helpful to hear.
I will have to do research on AOSP.

Be sure to try Repligo, I believe they have a free/lite version! I wasn't able to tether when I was on Monthly4G so maybe it is different now. If you are rooted you should look at the WiFi Tether for Root app. I believe you can find it easily with a Google search. Also be sure to look into AOSP, you might like it more but if not you can always revert!

Just download wifi tether from play store and that will definitely tether anything you want.

The camera would need to be modded. Someone will likely do this at some point.
Theres a full office suite on sale for .25 that may take care of your pdfs and then some. OfficeSuite pro.
For file transfers, you can use SGS3 Easy UMS. It only works for external sdcard though. Many people have been trying to do the same for internal but no luck yet as far as I know. Search for it on xda.
Also on file transfering, have you looked at a wireless transfer solution? I use SwiFTP and love it. Gives me access to the entire file system on my phone, including /system.
There are quite a few find my phone types like youre looking for that get good reviews. Check cerebrus. Haven't used it on this phone but liked it in the past.
My favorite alarm clock app is Alarm Clock Plus. Been using it for a few years now. No stopwatch or timer but hoping the dev adds em in the future.
For the backup, are you talking about a nandroid type backup or apps and data? Nandroid, no backing up straight to computer. Im pretty sure there are apps thatll backup your data and apps like that though. Never used any though. (And theres always adb!)
Tip: when people see a thread with this many questions and youre not experiencing a critical problem, it can look a bit overwhelming and seems like you may be demanding answers without really looking for them yourself. (Not saying thats your case and not trying to be an ass). Additionally at first read/glance it looks like it could be a lot of work to help you for what many might consider to be simple problems. In the future dont wait so long and ask everything at once. Ask your questions as they come and you cant find the answers yourself.
I saw your thread when it was first posted but didnt reply because I knew it would take much longer than I could spend at that moment.
One last thing, if people perceive you to be threatening to leave for the iphone if you dont get what you want, you are much less likely to find help now or in the future.
Like I said, im not trying to be an ass or belittle or anything like that. Just telling you what some (many?) people may think when they just glance over your thread.
Sorry for the little rant, but I am trying to help you.
Btw, if you're having such bad hw issues you may have a defective device. Majority of people have no problems.
Good luck!

[Q] No Photo Editor

So I used the original Note for a long time and I am used to being able to just hit Menu then Edit on photos to crop or write on them. Am I missing something here or does the Note 2 just lack this ability? I used it quite a bit and I would love to know if there is a way to get it back. I thought I could get it from Samsung Apps, but I see that isn't an option on this phone either. I have tried ones from the Play store but none integrate the same functionality and ease of use.
Any one have any ideas?
View the photo your waiting to edit push your s pen button then tap and hold on screen it will take a screen shot of what your viewing and place it into edit mode for drawing.
A downside to the screen shot method though is that it doesn't save the picture in the sam high quality over what the picture was taken in on max settings with the phones camera.
On a side note I also went onto Samsung apps and was able to get the photo editor app to download, not sure why it wasn't letting you Oo

Samsung Apps isn't even installed on the AT&T version. I downloaded it from Samsung and it says limited device support.

Sorry I don't have a direct answer for your question, but I do have a suggestion. I use PicSay(Pro) for all my editing and it's awesome! Of course I have not used others for comparison, as with PicSay I have not needed to look elsewhere. It is super-easy to use as well as share. I think it has a really nice selection of options. I'm not certain what the differences are between free vs paid version but I can tell you the paid is WELL worth it. I think I saw it on sale via Amazon not too long ago, you may be able to catch it again sometime for a cheaper price? If you are not looking for a seperate app then kindly disregard my suggestion.

Came from original Note. I'm 99% sure this is the one you want.

anyone know of a snap chat spy app?

Im sure there is somewhere else to post this but being i have a tmo note 3 and im crunched for time i am trying here.
Long story short, I have a daughter using snap chat and would like to monitor what happens on it. I googled it and found one for the Iphone but we all use droids. If anyone could point me in the right place I'd appreciate it.

Try kidlogger...google it ...youtube.....best app ever .it will log everything she will type and upload in the server .I cant give you more details here..all I can tell you that it works great and fulfil your requirements
PhoneSherrif is what I use on my daughter's phone. Gives me logs on every app, call and message. It also sends me GPS location data whenever the phone moves. Pretty slick, but not cheap. Subscription based app.

Dude, I just use MMGuardian to block what I feel is unsafe. You can install the parent app on your phone and control it remotely. I highly recommend it.
*Edit* I'm using the free version and it gives me just about everything I need. It doesn't have logging though.
