[Q] Warranty phone replacement. Which one do I get? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am getting my phone replaced under the extended warranty but they do not offer the DHD any more. I am a Telus subscriber and I have the choice between the galaxy s3 and the htc one x. They both look like great phones. I am also a flashaholic. So I am not sure which phone to get. Any suggestions?

HTC One X!!!!!! It's super amazing I've used both and id choose that one.
- hit my thanks button if i helped you -

Both are great phones. since you're on Telus are you getting the international variants of both phones? (both with quad core CPU's, the HOX with 32gb storage). IF so then I would call it a toss up. I prefer HTC Sense, so I would go there, but the GS3 is an equally good phone. Since both are top of line devices, they've all got equally large development communities.
If you're on the non international versions I would go with the S3, 16 GB non expandable storage on the HOX is just too small. Plus the US GS3 has more RAM (which may or may not be an issue).

Ram would not be an issue with either of those phones anyways.
- hit my thanks button if i helped you -

Still not sure what versions these phones are. I know the one x is the darker color like my dhd. I will have to ask when I am making my selection. What is the difference between the one x and the one xl?
Also I believe the sgs3 is the dual core and not the quad core.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191 using Tapatalk 2

I think the xl is thicker/heavier.
Also there is the One X+ which is said to have better battery and speeds. I don't know if this is out or on Telus.
- hit my thanks button if i helped you -

I'd probably go with the s3 on this one even if it looks uglier, it has removable battery, expandable memory, among other features.

HTC Desire - what's next?

The HTC Desire has been a pretty great phone for me, love the physical buttons, and the rooting scene is very very much alive.
Just wondering, will there be a phone that have the same size as the desire, but with updated internals like a dual core processor and more ram? Seems to be trend for bigger screens and any dual core phone is usually 4" and up.
What do you think?

The new samsung is so light you don't even notice the screen size difference in your pocket. Personally I would like to stick with HTC but if you were looking to buy a new phone right now nothing comes close to the samsung in terms of sexiness/thinness and lightness!
EDIT: and of course speed
I think the HTC Sensation ist the model you are looking for.
Same formfactor as Desire and Dualcore and so on.

HTC have really let me down with their new locked down
Mentality. I also wanted a reasonable size dual core phone
But had to come to the realization that its never gonna happen
(someone prove me wrong and I'll eat my words) so I went for
The galaxy s2. It craps on the sensation. The free ram on that thing
Is appalling and its still choppy in the browser with a dual core.
Come on htc! What have you been doing? Not catching up thats for sure.
I would love sense 3.0 on hardware like the galaxy S2 but we can't have

Doesn’t the Sensation have a 4.3” screen compared with the Desire’s 3.7”? I mean I’ve tried to use phones with screens 4” and bigger but it just doesn’t fit right for me....

Thats the thing really, I’m not looking for a phone right now, I can wait for another year or so. But I have always had my eye out for new phones. My 1st smartphone was the 1st gen metal iPhone, I used that since 2007 till my job required me to have a phone without a camera. I got the Desire mainly because I wanted an iPhone-like OS and that I could easily remove the camera module without damaging the rest of the phone. But I’ve fallen in love with the android OS and the amazing variety of phones there are in the market.
HTC as a company is great. I think they’re moving in the right direction. Just that their new phones have locked bootloaders and well, the rooting community is what I really love about the android platform.

Yes, and I agree - I want one with the same physical size as the desire personally...
I want a phone that's quad core, 32GB internal mem, 1GB RAM...
BUT
I want it smaller and thinner than the Desire, and have a battery that lasts a week with heavy use
Seriously, guys - it's not gonna happen. You want more features, the phone will get bigger and have crap battery life. Just enjoy what we have as this is a golden age for mobile phones
Sensation will be my next step.
The unibody is awesome and the specs are too.
I stick to HTC cause I just love their hardware and quality.
[Mobilerit]
I think it's worth waiting till Q4 to change for me, love my Desire and am very keen to have physical buttons(not keyboard) on my next handset but unfortunately it looks like the top handsets will no longer have them.
I'm with the OP on this one. I love my desire, still do, but am keeping my eye out for the next desire-like phone. I suppose the htc desire s is the next logical step, but from what I've been reading, it's not that drastic of a jump and therefore not worth the upgrade. I would have to say htc dropped the ball on this one. The desire s will not reach the same popularity s it's predecessor simply because it doesn't bring enough improvements to the table. While the sensation seems to be the next flagship, the large size, insufficient ram and internal storage are deal breakers for me.

Sensation seems to be the logical next step, though gaining root access and S-OFF is a bit of a problem at the moment. Last summer when I bought my Desire, I knew I would not have to change my phone until dual cores kicked in. Well, they came a bit early I'll probably keep my Desire for a year or two more before I move on to dual cores.
I do keep hearing that dual-core processors and Sense 3.0 are not optimized, but that won't be much of a problem once the device is fully rooted and ROMs start cooking. Think of how innocent the stock Desire feels, if you ever for some reason turn back to it. We have a monster now. So, it's all up to devs to figure out a way to root Sensation. After, it's golden.
rant... Disregard...
I was thinking on buying the HTC Sensation but its too big for me...
HTC Desire S didnt evolve much... and I love HTC Desire buttons...
Ill be waiting till IceCream Sandwich!
I know its v picky, but why has HTC switched to shiny buttons for power and volume? They look so tacky. One thing I love about the Desire - it looks muted/classy, not shiny shiny.
On the S Nexus S, I was surprised how little I noticed the increased screen size, v different to the Desire HD which feels massive (there's only a .3 difference, isn't there?)

Still no decent replacement for the Desire

I have had my desire for 18 months now and its been amazing, but looking at the current crop of phones there just doesnt seem to be a decent replacement. I dont like the new 4.3" phones as they are far to big to carry around. Ideally I would like a 3.7-4" dual core phone but there only appears to be the LG 2x and I dont want that phone due to the poor support from LG. I have looked at the SGS2 which has great spec but again the screen is just to big! Are there any phones on the horizon that suit my needs? I may even look at an Iphone 4S!
There is one, but it's US only according to this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19282336
Yep agree with op my contract is almost done yet no phone is drawing me towards it.

I agree with everything so far! The quad core phones look nice but my android desire running aosp seems to do everything I need it to do that is it worth upgrading or just wait another year and see how things turn out?!
Yeah, I recently grabbed a DX2 just to mess around with...I don't know how, but my CM7 Desire is faster/smoother than the dual core, just 6-month old X2 in almost every task.
HTC hit the Desire out of the park and haven't outdone themselves yet.
I like the look of this if we ever see it that is.
http://gizmodo.com/5845043/the-pana...p-might-not-suck-at-being-a-camera-or-a-phone
Let's hope that Ville comes to Europe. That looks Delicious. (And has proper camera too. Only thing bugging me with the Desire.)
agree, fast, reliable and perfect size. Thinking about Sensation XE, but bother me size.
Same with me. Even if I would want to buy a new phone there is none, and that's a shame concerning the enormous amount of phones thrown on the market.
I even would maybe buy a 4.3'' one but only with bigger resolution than Desire (so, SGSII is out). And also with big enough internal memory (so all HTCs are out, and in principle after the mess with our Desire, I don't want to buy a HTC anymore).
The only possible one would be a Google phone, but both, the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus don't have micro sd card slots, so they are out.
No phone left. Well done, manufacturers...
Agree. Another possibility currently on the market could be Motorola Atrix. 4" and if I remember right, it's dual core.
Edit: checked that out, it's Tegra 2
I have my tablet now.. arnova 10g2.. market place etc working ... so i use that for email etc and my phone for text etc.. playing a game on my 10" tablet then going to my phone is odd... do i want a larger screen , dont think so .
Do i want to use my 32GB SD card , yes.. would I like to use USB hosting ( like my tablet ) yes... my desire is wonderful .. but i think one day i may trade her in .. may ...

Any G2 users getting the ONE X?

I know that the U.S will be getting a ONE X via at&t but any of you getting the Real HTC ONE X quadcore?
I know it's not equipped with a AWS band but will that stop you?
I'm considering it but running off edge doesn't seem awesome.
Can it even us T-Mo's 3g?
I'm not a huge fan of LTE at the moment. Rogers up in Canada has exclusive access to the One X variant with the S4 processor and LTE radio. I'm waiting to see if my carrier, Telus, will release the Tegra 3 variant in the next few months. Either that or buy it outright from an online seller but I will be moving to the One X when I can. No sense in settling for the One S or V imo.
no expandable memory and no removeable battery + no keyboard is a hell no for me...
I will probably pick up whatever company that can release a proper powerful qwerty slider phone. I'm not going to wait for HTC is they are too afraid to provide proper qwerty phones.

If the digitizer still heat glued on the amoled screen, no thanks!
especially if they still using no-flexible glass.
My bro has the SII, he broke his screen, no way you can fix it under 150$ by your self. In cellphones shops its around 200$.
Thanks HTC to make it much easier. For the G2, you can find a digitizer for 20$. Same thing for my gf sensation.
If you are calling the One X "real" just because of the quad cores (5 cores, really), the North America (AT&T and Rogers) S4 version performs just as well. Dual core versus quad core is just marketing, as there are few if any apps that take advantage of quad cores. S4 wins in some benchmarks, and the Tegra3 wins in others. But real world performance seems to be pretty much the same.
Battery life on the S4 version seems much better so far, even despite the LTE radio. And one user making side-by-side comparison (he owns both versions) says the S4 versions is flawless versus the buggy Tegra3 international version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609878
At this point, the only advantages I see to the international version are the increased storage, and probable better dev support.

Why did you choose the HOX over the Galaxy S3

I'm a Galaxy S3 owner I'm not here to slag off the HTC One X i think it's a great phone, as i use to have a HTC Sensation & actually liked Sence more than Touchwiz.
But i'm wondering what made you choose the the HOX over the Galaxy S3, was it build quality, Sence, Camera ect ect?

3 things:
1. Touchwiz(don't like it)
2. HTC Sense(love it)
3. When you hold S3 in your hands you get this plastic feeling, feels like a cheap toy(but that's just my opinion, I'm sure its a great phone)

1. Better Screen
2. Better UI though a bit laggy
3. Better Design and build quality
4. Tegra Chip - special tegra high quality games
5. Was released earlier and i couldn't wait till s3 was released
6. Its camera's burst feature and Feature of taking pics while shooting a video
I personally didn't want to wait for gs3 to comeout ,I wish I did,I could have saved me being angry at a phone (first time)for 4 months, now I'm happy after I got rid off it and did what I should have done fist place
i chose HOX instead of GS3 because i had galaxy s1 for 2 years and i was tired of amoled screen and crackling plastic.
the screen on hox is really better in my opinion, and colors are realer!
then, design! i loved hox since the first time i've seen it!
then i wanted to try sense, i always loved it but never used!
i'm happy of my decision and i'll never come back from it!
Cuz its just better like they said "the s3 feel's cheap n plasticy ^_^

Found GS3 to be overrated
HTC sense is much better than touchwiz
Cheaper
HTC brand
My mums GS2 had loads of issues
Don't care about the very small spped differences. Find one x faster in several cases.
THD game support. Power saver core
Honestly when the next flagship is out (MWC 2013) most people's issues with the one x will be fixed, it will use either tegra 4 or snapdragon s4 which are both 28nm a15 which will boost performance and battery life with both having improved GPU with the tegra most likely 24 core GPU. The biggest reason I would find to buy the Samsung galaxy s4 is because of the Mali gpu but tegra 4 may be better

Because I knew some day HTC will fix lagging and optimize tegra, so HOX with his diplay and design will simply become better package then sammy And yesss, they already did it with last 4.0.4 update!
i am an avid mobile gamer and the nvidia tegra chip on this phone coupled with the 1.5ghz processor simply provides an unbeatable gaming experience. i also enjoy the sense interface on this phone compared to the s3,which wasn't. to my liking. then again, its juz my opinion. im sure the s3 does have its fair share of advantages.

had my HOX even before SIII specs were released but would prefer HOX over the SIII
I prefer Sense way over Touchwiz. Android's default UI is better then Touchwiz.
Though would like the "Keep-On when watching phone" fucntion of the SIII, though I think it would drain battery.
honestly i regretted getting the hox
Not a fan of AMOLED or Touchwiz, thought the HOX looked really nice physically, and I also don't like Samsung's side power button. I also don't like the look of the S3, although it doesn't feel as bad as I expected.

These threads are not allowed in sub forums, you can post it in the android general sections, it will be closed very soon
Because I knew that the OX would become the technical and developers' successor of the HD2. In my opinion this phone will live for 2.5 years and more.
Plus I wouldn't touch a Samsung with a bargepole because of the AWFUL TouchWiz *spits*
One word: design...
Look and feel is so much better, that I would buy my hox over and over.
Other great point is the display (vividness of my original galaxy s was the main issue with it)
Although I would have better battery, but everything else is just super since I flash custom roms (I prefer stock Android look over sense and touchwiz)
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
IMHO no comparisons can be done! GS3 is a great device just like the HOX but it doesn't have HTC Sense (And all HTC apps)
In general, as regards the software HTC is slightly ahead and the design of this phone is far better than the GS3.
The performance are equal!! I've had both HTC and GS3 and GS2 and iPhone before, and I have to say that I'd never change my HOX!
Best phone I've ever had!!
Even if I must admit that maybe I'm lucky because my unit is just perfect (no overheating, no short battery life, no flickering, no wifi issue etc.)
To sum up, if you have the luck to get a perfect HOX it is the most advanced and beautiful phone in the world for now!
Of course there are my humble opinions...
Choice based on past experience

I chose the One X based on the fact that I used to like and trust HTC.
Their eye for detail is usually sound. The One X's pysical design is outstanding and I was originally in favour of the their new policy of a non-removal battery. Sence has also always been another plus and the reason to choose the One X. I have owned 4 other HTC phone (Hero, Desire, Desire S and the Sensation) and all devices have been enhanced by the inclusion, running alongside the various Android versions.
But having owned the One X, since May, little things about the device now have begun to annoy me. The back of the device heats up after moderate use. The non-removal battery, originally seemed like a sound idea, until you realise that the battery installed is not capable of lasting more than an 6 hours on moderate use.The fixed SD storage, with no option to add your own, like their previous devices, now can be viewd as an idiotic decision. If they were going down this route, it might have been an idea to increase the internal storage on the phone (and the battery's capacity).
Sence has now become too "heavy" for ICS and unfortunately slows the device down, god knows what it will do to the speed of the device once they upgrade it to Jelly Bean!!
Funnily enough, I still love the device
I had the s3 for 2 days and i loved it but then i tried the hox and sold my s3.
For Better screen, better build quality and better ui i dont need any more reasons
Screen
Sense
Camera
Text to fit browser
Feels nice
Call quality
Auto brightness that actually works
No constantly flashing new roms to improve things
Works great stock unrooted
No home button

Had Samsung phones for years, and loved my sg2 but got impatient waiting for the sg3 so went for the HOX.
Do not regret it at all. Had its issues in the early days as I got it on release day but all has been solved with different otas.
Screen is superior, better build quality. Development is a little slow because of the s off issue but still good. Some very talented developers on the HOX forums. I do wish the battery was removable tho.
I do wish I had my sg2 still though, mainly so I can access skygo and sky sports tv. Oddly, sky release a brand new app a week ago without supporting 2 of the most popular phones on the market right now in the sg3 and hox.

Questions about One X, X+ and Roms

Hey guys, I love the look of this phone, my favorite color scheme has always been red and black. But I don't want a good looking phone if its not going to perform like I want it to.
So my first concern is developer support. Since this is a very slight upgrade it is possible not many people in the development community will buy it unless it is compatible with the International One X roms? Will this be the case or not?
Second is to due with the Tegra 3. From my understanding the new S4 Pro destroys this processor. My current phone being a sensation which constantly lags I don't want to ever be subject to lag again. Is there really that much of a difference in the two processors?
Third is to due with the ram, 1gb compared to the 2gb in phones coming out now seems lackluster. What do you guys think of this, is it a huge limitation or is the 2gb of ram a fad?
Thanks guys
Well personally I think that 2 GB of RAM is too much. A phone really doesn't need that much. The One X and One X+ uses the Tegra 3 CPU but of a different variant so I guess most ROMs can be ported easily.
