I've had my S3 for a few months now and I've noticed that I get different battery life depending on my charging habits with nearly identical use.
If I charge it overnight (thus, it remains on charge fully charged for a few hours) I get about 8 hours of general use.
If I charge it during the day and monitor it and take if off charge soon after it is fully charged (thus, it does not remain on charge fully charged) I can get about 1 to 2 days of general use.
That's a HUGE difference just from charging habits. Anyone else observe the same thing?

It seems to be the exact same with me. I always charge my phone over night and it will drop must faster than if I partially charge it or take it off when its done. I would like to know if anyone has a way to fix this.
Same here. It really annoys me, because I don't really want to wake up in the middle of the night to unplug my phone.

I think that's a lithium ion battery thing in general, and not just an S3 thing. I don't know the exact guidelines for charging a lithium ion battery because there is a lot of conflicting information passed on through word of mouth, but I think - as I prepare to pass on my own word off mouth theory- I think you're supposed to charge your battery before it gets less than like 10 percent discharged, and you're not supposed to let it overcharge. There's something about how lithium ion batteries have a memory to them and if you charge them improperly, you risk slowly killing your battery over time.
I realize now that you may already know all that but are just asking why overcharging your battery specifically leads to less battery life that day, but I don't know that and I already typed all that carp out, so it's staying

Phone charges to 100% then doesn't charge. Even if it says 100 while plugged in it could be down to 90. I have no idea why this is cutting a day off your usage time, but that is why it is shorter than if you unplug it. Could be that you use it more during the day and you are getting longer usage times since it is charging while using and unplugged at night while it is barely using 1 or 2 percent of the battery for 8 hours.
I put mine on charge at night before I go to bed, and then disconnect when I wake up the next day. It comes the whole day until same time in the night to put to charge. I normally get like 3+ hours display (on auto brightness, and full sync) with about 30% battery left.
Once battery is charged to 100, even if its connected to charger, there would be only trickle charge, and not regular charge to the battery. But it shouldn't make a significant amount of difference between taking off immediately or later in the morning.
I just leave it on charge overnight. There are sensors in it to prevent overcharge. What hurts lithium batteries is letting the battery drain to 0%.

I am no expert, so don't hold me on this one, but I believe your device charge should speed up due to firmware updates and also once the battery has been 'worn' in - just stuff I have seen about.
Can anyone else provide me their charge times? How long it takes to charge from A to B?
Pls mention with wall outlet or USB.
I've noticed this as well. My Arc charges in like 2-3h to full. the One X takes about 2 hours to get to about 60% from 30% (using USB).
edit: wall charging takes just as long.

And I also read that charge time should be almost 3h for a full charge(i suppose this is when device turned off). You could get about 70% charge in about an hour if I remember correctly.

While charging and using the phone it takes around 5 hours to get from 5% to 14% when not using but charging takes around 3-5 hours to charge from 25% to 100%
My second charge, from 0% to 100%, with device shut down took 3.5 hours to show the green led... quite a long time since I was using the wall-charger... I hope it will improve with the fw update and after the battery has been "initialized"
Today I began charging my HOX at 1:44 (1%) and it finally reached 100% at 4:59.
I was using HTC's charger.

same here, about 3h from shutdown with 0% to seeing green LED
using wall charger
Took me three hours with original HTC wall charger and original HTC cable (no extension) to charge from 4% to 100%. Terribly slow!
EDIT 1 : Apparently BWM doesn't show accurate power draw while idle on the One X for now, so my post has become totally irrelevant
I always install Battery Monitor Widget on all my Android devices and monitor charge and discharge constantly.
On my Desire Z, if it's below 70%+ I get a charge rate of about 750mAh from wall socket.
But on my One X, with the same charger (both are rated for 1amp, and both HTC), my charge rate drops to 450+ at 60% battery life.
It's probably a software issue, but charging the One X does take noticeably longer.
I don't think it is a software issue, as the battery pack is larger than before. Also when you are active the phone itself draws large amount of current and it definitely slow down your charge rate.

When your phone is idle with screen of, it shouldn't drain large amounts of power while charging. Can't imagine that has a huge influence on charge times tbh.
And for capacity, my HD2 was charged in about 2H for a 1200Ah battery, this 1800Ah One-X batt should be full in like 3h... not 5 or 6h...
The official wall charger took 2.5 hours to fully recharge the One X
Ok after an amount of charges, it now takes only 2.5h - 3h anymore for a complete recharge.

Did a charge on mine this morning from dead, took 2.5 hours to get to about 90%, left it for another hour but it didn't go up the last 10% stayed on 90 even after the extra hour. Off the wall

I'm thinking the same... I don't mind turning it off on a night for the first 2/3 charges but personally this is my only phone (don't have a house phone) so will be keeping it on through the night in case someone needs me in an emergency etc...
Was interesting to read that batteries prefer a partial charge and do not need to be fully charged; which is good actually as mines got around 18% left and I'm about to stick it on charge for the next 8 hours.
I have a 3900 mAh battery from Mugen. Ive noticed the battery lasts about 30 hours. But I find something very strange. It drains around 96% in just 15 minutes on straight boot after charging every time. In fact, the first 80% of so drains pretty quickly? Ive had it in my phone for about 2 weeks. Has anyone else noticed this or know why this may be happening. Also when at 100%, and i inplug it, goes straight to 98!
Have you done a battery calibration? Get the Battery Calibration app from the play store.
There's some argument as to whether this does anything or not, but have you conditioned the battery? That means letting it drain completely, then charging it continuously till it hits 100% - do that several times.
Its been proven that the app does nothing, which wipes battstats.ini or something
As for conditioning, its been down to around 3% before being charged. Ivehad the battery 2 weeks now.
Lithium Ion batteries have a very steep drain for about the first 15-20% and also slower charging from those levels. Once past that the drain is nearly linear, and then gets very steep at about 3.6v.

Typically the way our devices are designed, they do not charge the battery to 100% full it can actually cause damage to lithium ion based batteries. what happens is the battery is charged to 95%-98% then the device stops the charge and allows the battery to drop to abut 85%-90% and then starts trickling it again. By design the batteris typically drain a little bit fast at the top level.
further more lithium ion batteries survive more recharge cycles if the D0D (depth of discharge) is about 25% remaining.
Basically you battery will last longer by the device not charging to 100% and letting it discharge slightly when in trickle mode, and if you don't let it die completely and charge it when it reaches around 15%-20% left.

Hmm that kind of makes sense. Everyones been telling me to not let it drop to below 35% though cause it 'wears the battery out'. Ive been charging at around 40 cause thats where itd be after a full day at work and such.
Ive been getting concerned though because ive seen screenshots of people getting 31 hours with 7 hours of screen on time.
Im at 62%, 9.5 hours total, 1 hour 7 min screen on. Thats mostly with Wifi on though.
My stock battery used to drop 10% an hour on 4g, and this one dropped ~11% on 4g just now....

My battery wasn't holding a charge so I went to a T-Mobile store to get it replaced and they asked me if I leave it to charge overnight I go yeah so it has charge for the day and they told me not to because it destroys the charge. So xda community aka the experts let me know if this is true and if it is, how am I supposed to charge my phone?

I've charged this phone almost every night since I got it (early June) and my battery is still doing outstanding. There are times when charging it over night the battery will set it self to draw battery so it can recharge and not cause harm I believe. There are many superstitious theories and others that "battery experts" say charging over night can be harmful. Overall I don't buy into too much. I always try to unplug as soon as it hits 100% though.

Its bs they are like bots so they are programmed to say these things. Basically to appear as they know the "answer" to your problem. So got work in the morning I'm not suppose to charge my phone overnight and leave with 5% battery in the morning, they know they charge their phone every night. When a rep ask me that same question once I said "No I leave to work with my Samsung flip phone because I can't charge my 500 phone overnight".. *sarcasm*.

This use to be true on older phones. The galaxy S 3 and most new phones stop charging once they hit 100% it will only start charging again when it drops under 100.
And even before on older phones where it wasn't recommended I did it anyway. No harm done.

If you guys want to have a full charge in the morning, try an outlet timer - or put it in airplane mode overnight (I do that, battery is down only 1-3% after ~8 hours). You could also turn off data + wifi - so phone calls are still there if you are really worried about getting an emergency call in the middle of the night, the call function is still there, but apps aren't syncing and wasting battery and sleep time doing so.
I'm just not comfortable with the fire risk of leaving it in overnight. Sure, it probably won't fail - but if it does ? Why take that chance when there are other solutions ? I just charge it at my desk before going to bed, unplug it when it reports full charge.
It's the same kind of risk as putting a 100W bulb in a 60W socket - sure, you might be fine for a while, you might never have problems - but you might also start a fire when components fail under the stress.

Is there some sort of smart outlet that can stop charging when it reached 100%? I guess in a way the same as the outlets that has a master outlet and able to turn off the rest when the master outlet is off?

I usually let me charge overnight, it hasn't caused any problems for 6 months now.
It is true that your battery being at 100% charge (even if charging to the battery has stopped) is harder on your battery and overall capacity will lower at a faster rate than one stored at 60%. The thing is the difference is negligible over a year. It is technically best for your phone to be charged to 100% and then removed from charge so the battery can drain but we are talking about the difference of wether the half life of your battery is 3 or 4 years. overnight charging is not why your battery has failed.

Agreed it was probably a defective one he got. Even though the s3 is really awesome I'm not sure all if us will still have this phone 3 or 4 years from now. So go ahead and charge it don't worry.

There is not a better way to do it, you can rapid-charge it overnight, during the day, in you car, every 3 minutes with 10 minute pause or whenever you would like to.
For me, I use a normal charger overnight and the rapid charger when I need juice during the day or in the car, or when i forget to plug it overnight.
I remember reading on a reputable tech site about how lithium works, you can leave it overnight with no issues but they have a specific amount of charges in them. E.g. 500 charges for a battery and a charge will be counted anytime it goes above 80% etc. After 500 times, your battery should start to see degradation.
All the above figures are made up but that was the gist of the article i read, so don't worry about leaving your phone plugged in, the os will automatically limit the charge once it reaches 100%.

occasionally I see my 7 months old Pixel 3a XL can't hold battery power from 11% down. Switches off very fast, abnormally fast. Then if I power it and start it then keeps on restarting until battery level is higher than 5-6%
I use the original charger only. Sometimes it appears, some it does not and I can see it discharges as expected.
I try to keep my battery within 40-100% full and discharge it very rarely to 0%.
Anyone facing those abnormalities? Can't think of connected events - updates, etc ....

That's pretty weird
My 3a xl (about the same age as yours) doesn't use more than 10% max when left overnight. Are you using AOD or anything?

@Skittles9823 nothing beside stock Android and apps that I've used forever. Strange is that it's occasional - also occassional is initial drain from 100% to 92%.
Maybe its time to flash it - nothing suspicious is shown in batt stats
I use the fast charger that came with it. Not sure how it affects battery life long term. I try to keep it 100% to 40% usually and not charge it if not necessary..

I think popular wisdom is that both fast charging and in particular charging to 100% are not kind to the battery's longivety. Divided opinion about the effect of discharging to low percentages. Personally I charge to between 70 and 80% unless I know I'm going to need more capacity. 3a XL has a bigish battery, which helps. I recharge most nights but only to 70-80%. End of day I usually end up between high 40's and low 30's charge.
I manually set all apps I don't actually need to run in background to 'restricted' background use.
I charge mine up to a 100% often, when using it heavy.. I never heard of charging a battery to 100% being bad for it, unless you believe everything that is told or should I say sold to you.. Sounds like a faulty battery. If still under the 1 yr usual warranty I would have it replaced. I have drained mine down to less than 20% and still never experience any issue that OP state.

It's actually true. Lithium Ion batters degrade over time, the speed of which, depends on the amount of battery cycles they go through (0-100% and vice versa). Others have done the research and the math and found that generally a 20% to 80% and vice versa charge seems to be the best for longevity.
Personally I charge to 100 but try to charge my phone when it gets to 20-30%.

The included charger is a fast charger, good for headlining how fast it charges, not so great for the battery. I just use a 'standard' (Anker) USB charger.
Jury's out on if deeper discharge is bad, but it's the number of complete cycles (0-100% counting as 1). So 40 - 80% is 0.4 of a full cycle, and you're not stressing the battery so much by taking it to 100%. Many folk here replace their phones frequently enough not to be bothered by all this - if they sell it when 20% of the battery capacity's gone, that's fine.
I've observed the behaviour and few things made me question myself...one time I can see 13% battery and palying Youtube just shutdown the phone. Put it into charger and started showing 4% as initial charge.
There was another time when using Viber video shutdown in 23% but can be overheat or software bug.
I try to keep it these days above 40% charge but still use the supplied charger till I buy new slower one.

The good news is that this phone seems to be pretty easy to repair and a battery replacement could very well be a good option for you, especially since you wouldn't be compromising any water resistance or anything
