[Q] How can I delay the switch from 3g to 2g - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello guys, the situation is the following, the coverage of my service provider is awful, very unstable, so the phone switches too often to 2g. What I would like to do is to configure a delay for the phone to switch to 2g only when strictly necessary. Can that be done? Thank you.

I don't know about a delay, but you can force you phone to only 3g/hspa. I do it in areas where it constantly jumps back and forth.

Just tested it out, worked like a charm. Need to get a Verizon or Sprint nexus to guest the LTE only option.

The code does the trick, however, everytime I reboot the phone the setting goes back to WCDMA preferred

Is there a way to FORCE HSPA?

My pings are terrible when on 3G but they are drastically reduced when it switches over to HSPA. Is there a way to force this? Would be nice to have this feature when using latency critical apps...or tethering for things like Xbox live.
Don't your phone switch over to HSPA when you are downloading?
It should be switching over to HSPA when downloading.

Yes, it does... I was just wondering if there was a way to keep it in this mode even when not downloading. Sometimes it takes it a moment to switch over. And strictly running ping tests doesn't always cause it to switch.

It switches like that to save battery life, haven't heard of a way to force it though.

Ah, yes I figured that was the reason for it. I just remember being able to force 3G in areas when the signal was weak and kept switching to EDGE with my old G1 by using anycut and making a shortcut to "phone info". Tried doing the same again with the Nexus but HSPA isn't an option to pick from. Still only "WCDMA" (3G) or GSM (2G).
If you go to your phone dailer and enter in *#*#4636#*#*, then go to phone information and at the bottom you can select WCDMA only.

Cool, didn't know you could do it that way too...but this was the same thing I was describing above by using anycut. The problem with that is, even by selecting "WCDMA only" it doesn't differentiate 3G from HSPA...it's both.

[Q] Better WCDMA acquisition?

I was wondering if there is a way to make my tMob SGS3 do better at seeking and maintaining a WCDMA connection?
I know I can change the Mobile Network Mode to WCDMA only, and I do sometimes.
However, when it is in Auto mode, it switches back and forth constantly between GSM and WCDMA. In my home when I force WCDMA mode it has 2-3 bars of WCDMA and it does not drop the connection. When I put it on auto, it switches back and forth every minute or 2. I flashed and tried every modem possible but the results are the same.
Is there any way, besides WCDMA only mode, that I can make my phone more aggressively seek and keep WCDMA when it is available?
Thanks!

Dude I feel ya. I seriously think it all started once they switched to the 1900 band for 3g. Cause when I had my HTC HD2 it was mostly 3g in my house. Now it hardly ever switches to 3g unless I force it.

It works great when I switch it to WCDMA only, however I keep forgetting to switch it to GSM/WCDMA when I leave the house or work. I'm thinking of getting some TecTile NFC stickers to cause my phone to remind me to switch or maybe try to find a way to automate it with them or something.
If it sits at G or E until you start a data transfer and then jumps to 4G this is how it was originally set up to operate. The intent was to save both battery and banwidth. It was like this for me until I updated and it stopped. It was annoying so I'm glad it was changed. But if you are on either build UVALEM or UVALG1 try updating to the latest official build UVALH2.
Otherwise it may just be the tower you're connected to is under heavy load and is trying to conserve bandwidth, or it may just not be functioning correctly.
One other thing it could also be is if your area hasn't been refarmed yet. (It may be that this is what changed it for me but its been a while and I know I had updated about the same time I noticed it, so I attributed to that) the more I think about it now, if updating doesn't change its behavior, this is probably what's going on.

Thanks. I am on UVALH2. I think the way it is supposed to be setup is to sit on UMTS while conserving bat/data and switch to HSPAP when moving data (Both WCDMA protocols). It actually has been much better today. Don;t know if the tower in my area was having issues the last few days.
I checked for NFC programs that would allow me to change my networks based on location and none have that fine level of settings.
It isn't really a problem if I switch it to WCDMA only, it's just that I forget to switch it back to both when I'm on the road and I end up missing calls.
Well, I guess that answers whether it was the update that did it for me! I'm guessing it must be due to the network refarming then. Like I said, it did the same for me for a while, but I haven't had it hapoen at all for some time now.
You could look for an app that lets you create location based profiles. You can set it to be one way at home and when you leave it'll automatically change to your other settings.
I would imagine Tasker could handle this as well, but I've never used it.

Odd data problem

Ok so I have an unlocked LG Nitro HD with custom ROM (CM10) and it has a very weird problem. I've tried two different AT&T MVNO SIM cards (AirVoice and Consumer Cellular) both have the same issue. My data signal keeps changing from H to H+ and occasionally to 3G like every few seconds regardless of where I am using the phone even outside. I don't understand what the problem is. What could be the issue?

Data does work but it seems to drain the battery with the networks constantly switching and on occasion I get a "No Connection" screen on certain apps, I guess because if I open an app while its swapping networks the app cant connect. It's strange.

I had another odd problem, just a few minutes ago was texting someone and all of a sudden phone froze while vibrating then restarted! Don't know if that's a bug in CM10 or what, maybe the network swapping is as well.

I tried installing CM9 and it appears to have fixed the problem, the phone doesn't try to connect to the H+ network anymore, only the H network and seems to stay on it so far. I did see it quickly go over to the 3G network but it doesn't appear to be causing any issues, it went right back to the H network. However, I really wish the CM10 ROM worked right, as CM9 is so old...

I downloaded the CM10 ROM. It seems to behave slightly differently. It stays on H normally, but when I start to do something with data, it will go to H+ until the data loads, then go back to H. So far no disconnects, I'll keep you posted. Right now I have very limited data, I'm switching to T-Mobile as soon as UPS decides to deliver my SIM card (just found out they have a 1900MHz HSPA+ network in my area!) I'll be able to test it better then, but for now I'm trying to stick to wifi, especially since I wasted so much data tonight playing around with this stuff, lol.

Ditto... H and 3g are subsets of each other. Namely they can handle simultaneous voice and data 4G (h+) and lte can only handle data. So it switches back to H so you can receive and make calls plus it uses less battery. If you are on either 4G techs and receive a phone call while downloading it will automatically switch to H from h+ or lte, this is why. The only way you will never see this is on an AT&T rom where it only has 4G and lte icons.

H+ isn't a subset of 4G is it? I know that the CM's have separate icons for 3G/H, H+, 4G, and LTE.

That certainly is debatable but the US's largest carrier considers it to be, it behaves like 4g, H+ may not be as fast but it is 90%+ as fast in most markets small enough to not make a noticeable difference as far as people's perception and the technology behaves like LTE in a lot of respects, CM is international so it just conforms to International norms so that's why you get H+ AND 4G (LTE) designators.

[GUIDE] [HOW TO] Fix VS986 dropping down to 3G/H+ from 4G LTE

I've been working on a fix since a long time now. If you are in SD community then you prolly know me. Anyway I was able to fix this on two of my phones and it's working fine. I tested for 12 hours now. I'll also tell you in the end what problems I'm seeing. I'm also working on a fix for that.
I noticed that a service is started when the fallback happens but if I kill that service the network also dies. But if you follow the below method it safely starts a new service which kills the one that's responsible for killing the 4G/LTE
1. Upgrade your phone to 13B firmware
2. Root 13B
3. Now download Shortcut Master lite app from play store.
4. Now add these shortcuts to your favorites in the "Shortcut Master lite app". You can search for "LTE" and click on search button
LTEBandSelection
LTETestMain
LTE System Selection
CDMAPreference
5. Now click on "LTEBandSelection" and enable all the bands
6. Save and reboot
7. You now need to enable your data and turn off your wifi. Make sure your phone is in Global mode (in settings >> Mobile networks >> System select)
8. After your phone is rebooted open "Shortcut Master lite" app.
9. Now tap on LTETestMain
10. Select Click on CDMA preference.
Now choose Band preference and select "any"
P_REV_Preference ---> "MOB_P_REV 3
This is important.. EVDO Revision --> Rev A
11. "LTE Connect w/o IMS PDN" must be checked
12. Now go back to your main menu in shortcut master lit app
13. This step is very important. Changing the timeout is important. Tap on LTE System Selection
Except "Scan duration" add a couple zeros to all the other timers. For eg: T_mpsr timer (Min) is 200
The fallback timer will reset itself after reboot. But don't worry the configuration is already updated with the new value. For some reasons the shortcut master lite app is not picking it up.
14. Now finally click on "CDMA preference" in the main menu and make sure it has the value you set in Step 10
At step 10 or 13 your network should go away and your phone should complain about "no network". That's fine. just ignore the message.
Now finally reboot your phone. That's it. You should now have 4G LTE and it won't fallback to 3G or H+
The only problem is when I'm on a call my 4G LTE is dropped to 3G/H+. But after I hang up it goes back to 4G LTE after 12 seconds. I don't know if it's an expected behavior. But I'm trying to see if there is a fix for that.
I tested this with Tmobile. Make sure your APN settings are correct.
Not working for me on Cricket (AT&T). Still will always go back to H+, 4G LTE only works when I select CDMA.

Awesome, thank you! worked for me T-mobile.
it initially didn't work but I had to turn data off then on.
It also cycles me to 2g speed for a few seconds sometimes but that may be due to poor signal in building.

Yeah It's due to the poor signal. I got that too. You can check your signal strength using LTE discover app.
But overall it's working fine for Tmobile. I'm gonna try and fix ATT tonight.
Is 13B the main thing in the solution? I've changed these settings before on 11A and wasn't fixed. I tried these numbers on 11A and still don't work.
Also, unless a phone supports VOLTE, it'll fall back to 3G/H for calls.

I tried in 11A and it didn't work for me. So I guess it needs 13B.
So I tried various combinations last night for AT&T/Cricket, but I was not able to get it to work. No matter what I tried, when I had 4G LTE, voice wouldn't work and whenever voice worked, I was back to H+.
If others are reporting that T-Mobile works reliably on 4G and nobody can figure out how to make this work for AT&T, I guess it's time to switch to T-Mobile.

No. Hold on. I have a solution for ATT too. I tried something last night. Actually while I was working on a solution for ATT I found that we don't even have to go through the steps I mentioned in my OP to solve the problem. It boils down to invoking a service and killing a native VZW service.
The ATT solution I have works but in low signal area 4G fades and it doesn't fallback to 3G or H+. I had to recycle data to get 3G or H+.

Yes, that same thing happens when you switch to CDMA mode with AT&T. Voice doesn't work then (obviously), but it also doesn't fall back to H+ automatically, when you lose 4G coverage you pretty much lose signal all together.

Root? I just flashed the rooted sys image. That's it. instead of copying it in the FAT32 memory card just copy it to your phone's internal and you don't have to deal with split and merge stuff
If it drops out of 4G on a call then you're talking on 1X. So no video chat, no HD voice and no voice + data?

How to exclude 2G connections on the Exynos version?

Hi,
In the network menĂ¹ of my unlocked no brand S9+ with Exynos SOC I can't choose to have only 4G and 3G like in LG devices, do You know if there is some secret code or something like that?
My goal is to have the phone only connect to 3G and 4G networks, and never connect to 2G network
Thanks a lot.
I didn't have that option on my S7 and I don't have it either on my S9. It has only 2 options with "only": 3G and 2G.
But I don't miss that, as my goal is having my phone connected to the best available network. For this "LTE/3G/2G (auto connect)" setting works great.

The problem is that once the phone switch to 2G, it will not be possible to return to 3G or 4G unless you close the call, this means worse voice quality and no data connection until you're stuck in 2G.
There is an app called 4G Switcher that I use to set it to UMTS/LTE only. Try it.

You are technically correct, but the chance of that happening - starting a voice call while only in 2G coverage, moving to a 3G/4G area while still speaking and needing data connection while speaking - is a very long shot. Not to mention that if you force 4G/3G and there is only 2G coverage, then you can't make a voice call at all. So between a lesser quality one and not being able to do it, I'll choose the former.
But my opinions are based on my experience, my destinations and the 4G/3G coverage in my country (Romania). There are extremely rare circumstances where there is no 4G/3G coverage here.
I'm using Vodafone Italy, one of the best mobile operator here in Italy, and when I make a long call, i mean longer than 15 minutes, sooner or later it always got stuck on 2G.
So it is a very annoying behavior, and I can't understand why on a LG phone I can exclude 2G and with a Galaxy S9+ I can't.
Any update on this? It is very annoying e.g. when you're calling inside a car to always go and stay stuck in 2G until the end of the conversation, without data connection working
I want to know this too! I always have better 4G reception than 2G but sometimes it gets stuck to 2G.
up, any update about this?
