Is there a way to FORCE HSPA? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My pings are terrible when on 3G but they are drastically reduced when it switches over to HSPA. Is there a way to force this? Would be nice to have this feature when using latency critical apps...or tethering for things like Xbox live.

Don't your phone switch over to HSPA when you are downloading?
It should be switching over to HSPA when downloading.

Yes, it does... I was just wondering if there was a way to keep it in this mode even when not downloading. Sometimes it takes it a moment to switch over. And strictly running ping tests doesn't always cause it to switch.

It switches like that to save battery life, haven't heard of a way to force it though.

Ah, yes I figured that was the reason for it. I just remember being able to force 3G in areas when the signal was weak and kept switching to EDGE with my old G1 by using anycut and making a shortcut to "phone info". Tried doing the same again with the Nexus but HSPA isn't an option to pick from. Still only "WCDMA" (3G) or GSM (2G).

If you go to your phone dailer and enter in *#*#4636#*#*, then go to phone information and at the bottom you can select WCDMA only.

Cool, didn't know you could do it that way too...but this was the same thing I was describing above by using anycut. The problem with that is, even by selecting "WCDMA only" it doesn't differentiate 3G from HSPA...it's both.

WCDMA Only on WP7

Is there way to disable 2g/enable 3g only on WP7? I have a T-Mobile HD7 if that makes a difference.
On Android, you can go to the dialer, type in *#*#4636#*#* and it puts you in a menu where you can change it from WCDMA preferred to WCDMA only. I want that same functionality on my HD7 if possible.
I found the answer shortly after posting this. I swear I searched. Well anyway, to let anyone who wants to know, here are the steps:
Go to the phone dialer
Type ##3282#, Call
Tap the ... on the lower right of the screen
Tap Settings
Under "Network Type", select "3G Only"
Going back into the ##3282# menu/settings shows "Automatic" in the "Network Type" box, but it stays on 3G, indefinitely. I'll report back here if that changes.
thanks for the tip, might want to add it to the tips and tricks thread.
Can you set it to 2G only? I live in a low network area and sometimes calls drop out when switching from the weak 3G signal to the strong 2G signal

I know the hd7 has that option under cellular but apparently not all phones have this.
What are the benefits of doing this?
It's already in tips - it's called Field Test

If your phone has a 3G signal but the Edge signal is stronger, it reverts to Edge. You lose calling capabilities when not in a 3G area but if you are never out of range it stays in 3G all the time, as in my case.

I checked tips and could not find it. Search doesn't allow the search "3G" because it is too short and it finds no results for "3G only" and for "WCDMA only". Who would know to look for "Field Test"?
Not me either - I wasn't having a go at you, just saying it was in there
I know. I was commiserating. Sometimes techies aren't clear about what certain functions do. I consider myself a techie of sorts but I'm not a programmer. It was very difficult for me to find. It took 2 days of searching.
When you set the 3G only change, does it stick?
I'm trying it on my Quantum and no matter what I pick, 2G/3G/automatic, nothing happens..
3G lock is nice for me because I have dialup at home, and I can just throw the phone in 3G mode and tether.

quick way to toggle LTE?

Hey all --
Is there an easy to way to toggle LTE? II'd like to have a quick option to choose LTE but not to leave it on all of the time since my battery dies like 3x as fast.
I know there's the menu option that is like four menus in and requires a reboot.
SETTINGS --> MORE SETTINGS --> MOBILE NETWORKS --> NETWORK MODE
I'm hoping there's a better way.
Thanks!
I'm sure someone will eventually add it to our toggles

As tdwp16 mentioned hopefully someone will add the toggle in. As of right now there is no easy way. That appears to be the ONLY way at the moment

I will have to give that a shot. I have it installed on my SGS3 which is still unrooted at the moment. It at least has not Force Closed on me (like some of the reviewers complained about), but I have yet to find 4G. This is probably just do to the northern part of my area where I live missing coverage in quite a few spots.
I've decided to give this a shot. However, LTE is not available in my area so I will have no idea if it even works....

i'll give it a shot and report back. thanks for the suggestion!
I have every reason that it can be accomplished natively through the settings menu.
Because, if you dial ##3282# and you go through the menus (i forgot the exact one), but it allows you to switch between different modes, LTE being one of them, on the fly without the need to reboot. So I guess all I have to do is remove the reboot option from settings and it should switch the same way that it does in the ##3282# menu.
The app noted in this thread worked for me as far as taking me to the settings but it doesnt work like a toggle does. That being said there is no LTE here in Phoenix yet so I'm screwed either way LOL We have some regular spots of 4g but I dont believe this phone works on regular 4g, unless I'm wrong??? Anyone know?

Yea, I am having the same issue in the northern part of Dallas. LTE is not very good here yet either for Sprint, but hopefully if they sell enough phones and get enough complaints they will break out more towers faster.
Actually I have since uninstalled the App and since then I have not been able to locate LTE at all. I tried putting it back on in an area that I had previously attained 4G and still no go. I hope that Switch It did not mess with my antenna or some such. Just wanted to put the warning out there.

Sounds like you are pretty knowledgeable, thanks for the info. When looking at the phone, I was surprised to see and didn't know the reason for the reboot when turning on LTE. Do you know the reason for the reboot? Is it anything logical or necessary?
I would hope that this will be something Dev's start building into their roms, unless of course there is a legitimate reason for the reboot.
Thanks!

The problem with that method -- which also requires your MSL code -- is that if you use it to select LTE, it forces the handset to LTE only without 1x or EVDO. They are mutually exclusive.
This can be used to bypass the normal settings that automatically upshift and downshift between LTE and CDMA data as a threshold function of signal strength, to force LTE. But it has the side effect of killing the voice/text connectivity.

[Q] How can I delay the switch from 3g to 2g

Hello guys, the situation is the following, the coverage of my service provider is awful, very unstable, so the phone switches too often to 2g. What I would like to do is to configure a delay for the phone to switch to 2g only when strictly necessary. Can that be done? Thank you.

I don't know about a delay, but you can force you phone to only 3g/hspa. I do it in areas where it constantly jumps back and forth.

[Q] Better WCDMA acquisition?

I was wondering if there is a way to make my tMob SGS3 do better at seeking and maintaining a WCDMA connection?
I know I can change the Mobile Network Mode to WCDMA only, and I do sometimes.
However, when it is in Auto mode, it switches back and forth constantly between GSM and WCDMA. In my home when I force WCDMA mode it has 2-3 bars of WCDMA and it does not drop the connection. When I put it on auto, it switches back and forth every minute or 2. I flashed and tried every modem possible but the results are the same.
Is there any way, besides WCDMA only mode, that I can make my phone more aggressively seek and keep WCDMA when it is available?
Thanks!

Dude I feel ya. I seriously think it all started once they switched to the 1900 band for 3g. Cause when I had my HTC HD2 it was mostly 3g in my house. Now it hardly ever switches to 3g unless I force it.

It works great when I switch it to WCDMA only, however I keep forgetting to switch it to GSM/WCDMA when I leave the house or work. I'm thinking of getting some TecTile NFC stickers to cause my phone to remind me to switch or maybe try to find a way to automate it with them or something.
If it sits at G or E until you start a data transfer and then jumps to 4G this is how it was originally set up to operate. The intent was to save both battery and banwidth. It was like this for me until I updated and it stopped. It was annoying so I'm glad it was changed. But if you are on either build UVALEM or UVALG1 try updating to the latest official build UVALH2.
Otherwise it may just be the tower you're connected to is under heavy load and is trying to conserve bandwidth, or it may just not be functioning correctly.
One other thing it could also be is if your area hasn't been refarmed yet. (It may be that this is what changed it for me but its been a while and I know I had updated about the same time I noticed it, so I attributed to that) the more I think about it now, if updating doesn't change its behavior, this is probably what's going on.

Thanks. I am on UVALH2. I think the way it is supposed to be setup is to sit on UMTS while conserving bat/data and switch to HSPAP when moving data (Both WCDMA protocols). It actually has been much better today. Don;t know if the tower in my area was having issues the last few days.
I checked for NFC programs that would allow me to change my networks based on location and none have that fine level of settings.
It isn't really a problem if I switch it to WCDMA only, it's just that I forget to switch it back to both when I'm on the road and I end up missing calls.
Well, I guess that answers whether it was the update that did it for me! I'm guessing it must be due to the network refarming then. Like I said, it did the same for me for a while, but I haven't had it hapoen at all for some time now.
You could look for an app that lets you create location based profiles. You can set it to be one way at home and when you leave it'll automatically change to your other settings.
I would imagine Tasker could handle this as well, but I've never used it.

No. Not yet anyway. So far the rat restriction works only on stock TW. As far as wap.cingular, I have noticed that it no longer works either. I think AT&T did something that seemed to disable it.

My LTE toggle on CM10 works fine using the UCDLK3 modem (or whatever it is). The settings update from "WCDMA only" to "LTE/WCDMA/GSM" when I toggle it (just to confirm). I haven't updated to CM10.1 yet, but last I tested it the LTE toggle did not work.
On CM10, I did have to go into Settings and find the Mobile Networks option (its on the same page you enable Data Roaming) and select an AT&T network once. The toggle would not work if I selected "Select automatically". My phone is also unlocked using the dialer code that was posted for ICS 4.0 ROMs - not sure if this matters.
You can on AOSP.
System Settings> More> Mobile Networks
Now go to Network Operators, Might take a couple of minutes to scan, once a list shows up. Select the first option.
Now go back and choose the wap.cingular APN.
Also, if you want to get on 2G, the "Use only 2G Networks" is now able to be checked as well.
These options will reset after a reboot and toggling between Airplane mode.

Holy cow it worked broseph! I went into Network Operators. It took about 2 minutes to load the list, then showed three AT&Ts and a T-Mobile. I picked the first AT&T.
Then I tested 2g by putting a check mark in the force 2g box, and sure enough, it worked. I then chose GSM/WCDMA preferred, and sure enough, it forced HSPA+ without even having to choose the wap.cingular APN (in fact, I am using the "phone" APN).
Any downsides to selecting the network operator that way? I'm pretty sure AT&T does not roam onto T-Mobile in any event, so off the top of my head, I can't think of any downside. Would be curious if anybody can think of any downsides to forcing HSPA+ this way.
I personally will probably leave it on LTE most of the time anyways... I just wanted a method to force 2g or HSPA for the few times that I am in a location with weak LTE and the phone kills its battery by switching back and forth between LTE and HSPA. Awesome to finally have one.

Yes, it works. I use this all the time. No need to change APNs either. I've never noticed any problems with this. Once in a blue moon I have to go and redo the network operator part but I've never figured out the exact reason. I have a MicroCell due to poor coverage so I often elect to turn off LTE at home and re-enable when I'm out and about. I've also traveled all over the country and never had an issue I would equate to me manually selecting the network operator.

I just did a test to see idle drain overnight on HSPA and it was actually worse than LTE. On LTE I drop about 7% overnight. Last night on HSPA I dropped 12% in 9 hours. Better battery stats showed 98% deep sleep, too, which is about the same as on LTE.
Anybody else ever try this? Curtis if those results are normal-i would have expected less drain on HSPA.

My signal was about -70 dBm (ie, very good) and better battery stats showed 98% deep sleep.
In any event, it was running the same apps as it was the night before when it lost only 7% on LTE. I'm just surprised LTE idle drain was less than HSPA under identical circumstances and was wondering if anybody else experienced the same?

It could be coming from your carrier and their towers. If you really wanna save battery, set it to 2G overnight. Also, 4G is only a battery drainer when it's being used, which it isn't much overnight.

+1. I set to 2G every night. Of course I also always have switched off data and wifi because I don't care about emails and other misc stuff while I sleep. I have slightly better 2G reception in my home than 3G or 4G so this helps even more on battery savings. Cut my battery drain nearly in half (6-8 hours I may get a 3% drain or an absolute max of 4% if I keep snoozing my alarm).
This doesn't work on my AOSP device, I cannot change Network Type or check the "Use 2G Networks only" box. What am I doing wrong?

I think I've always been too impatient to wait 60 seconds for the network operators to load lol
But props im not sure if this is recently discovered but I've spent a lot of time searching for how to disable lte and could never figure it out.
Actually, got it to work. Picking the second "AT&T" from the network operator list allowed me to toggle the other settings. This is a big deal for me because my area has "partial" 4G coverage and my phone prefers a poor, slow 1 bar LTE signal over 5 bar HSPA+, thanks a lot!
wap.cingular will go in and out every 5 minutes and when i enable wifi and turn it off, it takes a good 1-2 minutes to regain connection. (On TW)
