Hey guys, I'm new to Android, and I plan to root. I have a few questions. First of all, can I root on a Mac? I heard Heimdall works, but I'm not so sure. When I flash Roms, how does that work? Do they update? I plan on getting CM10, and what does the nightly stuff mean? Any suggestions on good Roms? I just need some help here guys, sorry if I sound really stupid. I came from an iPhone.

OK first of all you'll just have to try different roms out to see which one suites your needs and likes and search the forum for questions the search bar will answer all you questions. Me personally I used YouTube a lot to get info about ROMs and flashing and rooting how to's happy flashing FYI its very addicting and may cause relationship issues approach with caution!!!! Lol jk

The one thing I'm worried about is data when flashing. I heard you have to wipe your device to flash a new rom. Can you just back it up before the flash and then restore it after the rom is flashed?

so im not really from around these parts but my girlfriend has this phone, and doesn't want root but would like to have a nandroid backup, is there any problems with odin'ing cwm and not flashing su, and just leaving the phone unrooted? or is that a horrible idea?
the phone is tmobile stock w/ the most recent ics update btw
also, sorry if this has been asked, i'm sorry.. but I looked around and didn't see this question posted anywhere, but
thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

Mostly for experimental purposes.. I've never had a phone that is so easy to flash a custom recovery without rooting.. but also because we want to backup more than just contacts and calendars..
I was just wondering if it's a bad idea to flash the recovery and not root the device

Well since you are in the sprint galaxy s3 forum you shouldn't have to worry about that. Now on other sites that don't break them down into sub forums (Verizon, sprint, T-Mobile, international, etc.) It would be wise to know that. Just make sure it has sprint galaxy s3, D2spr, or SPH-lz10 in it. Also, welcome to the forums! And/or XDA if you weren't here before!

I believe the 2 files they're referring to are the system files that flash the stock recovery upon reboot if stock isn't installed. Though the easiest way to install the twrp recovery is install the goo manager app and install from there.

No worries, and correct.
Once in the goo manager app
-press menu
-select the 'open script recovery' option > accept the message
-it will download and install
-reboot into recovery and you're done
And as of roms, it depends; if you like touchwiz, i personally recommend blazer rom - phantom hacker, fre3 gs3 - clark44 ; and if on aosp: aokp, miui, and can't go wrong with straight cm10.
how do i know if im completely up to date, firmware, radio etc...and i see two sections...original android dev. and just android dev. which one i use?

Please research before answering a n7100 ROM=brick. You can probably run an n7105 ROM just fine, but NOT n7100. You could have got this guy to flash that ROM and bricked his phone.
I guess I should say it may boot but people lost their imei trying this.

Correct, but it's proven to not flash n7100 all others are probably okay.
Look here's the deal I really appreciate how much your want to give back to the community. It needs more people who want to contribute instead of just get their questions answered. All I'm saying is make sure you know what you're trelling people. Then you'll build a little rep and people will trust you.

No it will not get its own sub forum. It will be like the T999V where there's really not a lot to worry about as long as you stay away from the rest of the firmware.
Roms, recoveries, and kernels only!
Things will get simpler as time passes. And we will see some roms based off the T999L, but I wouldn't expect many.

Correct. I call roms, roms. And Firmware can be any combo that includes other partitions to be flashed.
Wicked should be fine. I am assuming that an ICS rom will eork, but don't know for sure. Nandroid your current to be safe. You will also need to flash an ICS kernel. Pretty sure any of the ones I've got listed in the other thead won't work.
I am interested in how this goes so please report back. And ill answer aby questions I can about it as well.

Well the v10 is actually a jb 4.1.1 build not ics... but its aroma installer so your forced to pick stock or deviant kernel during the install which may cause to fail not giving me option to flash your uvuamb7 kernel after the install if it fails during the aroma install... see this is what confuses me, I'm no noob but I also don't wanna Brick or Bork this new phone. ...
Should I avoid aroma installed roms?

Lol! Oops! Been a bit since I've thought about 4.1.1. Sorry bout that.
Pick whichever kernel you prefer from aroma. As I said in the other thread if the rom includes a kernel, you don't need to worry about it.
In the event you do flash one without, you can use either of the kernels. They both work.
Was something not clear in my thread? Was pretty sure I had that covered.
And lets have further questions there if you don't mind. Best to keep the info together.
