No update via OTA or Kies - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Anytime I try to update my phone via OTA, it says connection failed (done so since I bought the phone in June). When I try to update via Kies, it says "This is the latest firmware" Current version: PDA:LG1 / PHONE:LG1 / CSC:LG1 (ATT); Latest firmware version PDA:LG1 / PHONE:LG1 / CSC:LG1 (ATT). I know there have been several updates as I'm on I747UCLG1. I was rooted, but reverted in attempt to exchange out my phone due to battery issues (which were instantly gone after returning to stock). My girlfriend also has the AT&T S3 which has always been stock and is having the same issues. Does anyone know why this is happening or a simple way to update (simple enough to explain to someone who is not tech savvy over the phone)? I just don't know why the phones show there isnt an update when there has been several.

The update after UCLG1 hasn't made it to kies. It's a staggered rollout it seems. Either that or it's been pulled.

I have the exact same issue. My phone says the server is unavailable OTA, and Kies says I have the latest firmware. I took my phone to an AT&T store, and the guys were clueless. My friend got the update on his phone and it's really no big deal, but just keep your fingers crossed it doesn't do this when Jelly Bean comes out.

I had the same issue, LG1 would only show up, couldnt get the LH9 to even show up via OTA, kept telling its is up to date.
So I ended up just grabbing the stock LH9 update.zip that gunnyman put up in another thread and just used that on the stock recovery to update it to LH9.

Thats the post to where gunnyman put the original OTA update.
Take that file, rename it to update.zip and copy it to the root of the internal storage. Then boot into STOCK recovery, not CWM (if you have CWM, you will have to put it back to STOCK recovery) and choose update via zip file, and choose that zip file, it will update just like the OTA does and be identical to stock OTA update. Then you done.

Do I need to be rooted for this to work? I know you can do this same procedure unrooted with the Jelly Bean leak.

If you are asking me, then no. You need to be on stock recovery and you cannot have any FROZEN apps via Titanium Backup as the update itself is an offset patch, so it cannot find the file (because you froze it) then it will fail.
Dixit

I downloaded the file and renamed it to update.zip. I saved it my internal SD card, and it's not showing up in stock recovery. Did I do something wrong? Oh yeah, if I update this way, can I still connect to Kies or will my device be "modified"?

I dont think it will work on internal, I cant remember though. I believe I put it on my External SD as I have one in there. If you have one, put it in there and it should work. It will not show "modified" on status, that only shows up if you are rooted.

Yes. This is an ORIGINAL STOCK update, its not modified in any way shape or form, so dont worry, its not going to affect your future updatability. That only gets affected when you are rooted. Updates like this one where its patch offset based, the update will fail due to when you root most people freeze apps. That fails automatically on patch offset updates.
Jellybean may be a full udpate which Kies will do.

[CUSTOM UPDATE] LG2 Patch for Custom Roms

I'm doing this from work, so I'll have to clean this up later.
Standard Disclaimers Apply. I have personally tested this on my device multiple times.
WHAT DOES THE LG2 OTA UPDATE CONTAIN?
Simply put? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Well mostly nothing, I can't fully confirm that. But I can confirm two things:
1. Removes universal search from Google Quick Search (i.e. search apps, contacts, or anything besides web)
2. Limits your Wifi and 3G horribly (made my SGS3 reject my work wifi for being too weak, with 1-2 bars)
WHAT AM I PROVIDING HERE THEN?
Well, anyone who has received the notification for the OTA knows just how frustrating it is! This should get rid of that, while also updating your modem. Any other 'patching' is removed, as well as the Google Quick Search crippling.
And most importantly, this will flash through CWM no matter what you've changed or removed, so long as you're on LF9.
HOW TO USE:
1. Do not accept OTA update.
2. Download my file to your SD card.
3. Boot into CWM.
4. Flash my file.
5. Reboot phone.
6. Accept OTA update.
7. Reboot phone once OTA fails.
DOWNLOAD HERE
Custom LG2 for Custom ROMS
This is awesome!
Side question: what does this mean for future OTA's? Will subsequent "custom updates" be needed from here on out? Thanks!
Worked perfect! Thanks!
Thanks again for the update! But my paranoid just wants to confirm I get everything flashed correctly...
I accidentally clicked "Update later" when I got prompted (step 6) because I wanted to check the device info. Now I don't get prompted to install the OTA anymore even though I didn't go through the process of downloading it. Should I be seeing the old baseband (LF9) or should that also be LG2?
Thanks!

The baseband is the modem, so LG2. If it's gone, then congrats. Everything else is in place. The only reason the notification remains in the first place, is because the update didn't go through the Android updater.

Thanks for that clarification. I understand that this zip kills the update nag but does it also update the baseband to LG2 where people are having wifi and 3G issues? If so it would be nice to just have a nag killer zip? Or edit the build.prop to show LG2 so that the system thinks its updated?

update error in my gnex ota

Hello everyone.
I have Yakju Galaxy nexus just bought it a month ago. Its version is 4.0.4 few days ago I got a message to update to JB so I started the update but when it restarts the phone I get a green android with something like a jewel in his stomach and a loading bar below it. But just after few seconds (the loading bar didn't finish) the android fall on his back with a red triangle and exclamation mark ! In it then the phone started with the same software. What is the problem and what should I do to get JB. Btw the update file size was 144.9 mb and am on the stock not rooted
And i have important data that i don't want to lose
Try again? Do you have an SD card? Are you almost full on space?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Try downloading the update again. Make sure you have a good data connection (wifi is best). The file may not have downloaded properly.
The Android you saw is not an error, it's just in recovery mode, meaning it's updating the system software. Be patient and let it finish. When it's done, go into settings>about phone, and check the android version.. Good luck!

If you haven't flashed your phone, there's a good chance it not actually a yakju build. My phone was originally a yakjuwx build or something of the sort...
Could you please take a screen shot of your 'about phone' screen, and just to make things really easy in determining what build your phone is -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.cbruegg.officialupdate
Download "GN official update checker" from the play store (it's not really official from Google, but it checks if you have an official Google build and will be getting direct OTA updates from them rather than Samsung builds, such as my phone's original build)
In any case, it doesn't require any permissions, so just download it and tell me what it says your build is...

Well, you're right, you have a yakju build. Bad news is I have no idea what's wrong with the system update, no reason it shouldn't be working...
Only thing I can suggest is to get in the game Unlock your bootloader, root, and and flash it on your own. Sorry I can't be much more helpful beyond that.

As was mentioned earlier, there is something on your device that is not stock. You can't tell what it is when you use the stock recovery. You need to try to flash the update via CWM, and it will tell you exactly where it fails. See the "update" link in my signature for instructions.

SGH-T999 T-mobile Getting Firmware Update Via KIES

As of right now T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 known as SGH-T999UVLEM is upgrading to a newer Version which is SGH-T999UVLH2
I don't think the over the air (OTA) mode is working right now because I did many tries and it keep saying device up to date so if you want to try it us KIES. if you version of KIES is not up to date you will have to update it first then you will be able to upgrade the phone.
it will take about 10 to 15 minutes of your time and it will depend on your connection.
everything like root will be gone after the update. :victory:
ok after you update, you will be able to go back and use the same method you use to to root the older version and install a different boot.
mine is working fine I don't find any problem yet.

Anyone know what this update is for?
So I guess posting in one wrong section wasn't enough right? Stop trolling and keep this where it belongs in the general section.

Just reflash the custom recovery in Odin and flash the root file. Unless you mean not good for those that are running custom ROMs then that's a different story.
do the developers here give the okay to update to this, for those of us who are fully stock and not rooted? will we be able to get root easily still(with the same methods), even after this update?
Good question. I second that.

That's the Windows 98 diagnostic approach "re-install the OS and see if that fixes it"
Are you saying it works fine for you?
I'm just curious... what are the improvements? I haven't seen that question yet
I hear you, no one is reporting anything about the update and I'm wondering if it's even worth doing. I wouldn't mind updating but sometimes you don't get the results and blind updates makes me wonder anyways.
Just going from memory so may leave something out. Its been mentioned but its scattered due to so many threads about the update.
New kernel, new radio (some report grand improvements), camera updated and has new features, reportedly better stability and battery, brightness slider added to notification window.,....ugh, damn now I'm blanking out on this! I know there's more, just escaping me at the moment. Ill post more when I think of it.

FWIW, the Kies update isn't working with Win 8.
it'll install, but will close when you try to run it.
Edit: sorry I got it updated but I'm still trying to get root now and using the tool kit is out dated and I can't seem to find info for it, anyone have a way to root after latest update.
Edit 2, all set. I even foubd a few things I havent seen posted yet. We'll see if it pans out but im good.

Rooted stock rom - can I update?

I searched and couldn't find an answer, maybe I'm just a bad searcher. I'm using the rt66 root injected stock rom and this morning I checked "software update" under "about phone" and it started downloading a 330+ mb file. I'm assuming this is the JB update that was just released, will it install correctly or should I stop the download? I don't want to brick my phone and I can wait until I'm home to update. Thanks.

IIRC I tried the same thing, it just gave me an error message, didn't actually update anything. You can try of course, I don't think it'll work. Also, if you're already root, you should probably install CWMRecovery or TWRP Recovery and make a backup of your phone, just so you can feel safe about it.
I would make a backup, go ahead and try the update. It'll probably fail and not harm your phone, or update properly. Good luck, and post back with results if you can, I'd like to know what happens
Thanks for the reply. I already have twrp and a nandroid backup. I think I'll wait until I get home to try and apply the update.
Use voodoo ota rootkeeper.

Just to let you know for when you get home from work, your update will fail. You're going to need to have Stock Recovery. There is a flashable floating around here somewhere.
The OTA will check for /system integrity. Meaning that it will look for all the /system/apps that are supposed to be there (meaning if you've deleted any bloat and not just froze it-fail), stock recovery, and NO ROOT (hence the OTA Rootkeeper). If any 1 of those are not as they should be, the OTA will fail.
Thanks for the reply again. So the easiest thing for me to do is first install root keeper and then find and flash the stock recovery. The only thing I've done is flash the root66 and then installed twrp, I haven't frozen any apps or deleted anything.

Doc, I was reading your instructions in your firmware/OTA thread, it looks like you recommend mobile odin pro which I already have. If I follow your instructions for that method it should give me the OTA, correct? Thanks for that entire thread, very informative.
Could someone be so kind to help me...I am rooted with a stock rom, but I have added Photosphere and Keyboard 4.2, so I guess not technically 100% stock. I am selling my GS3 and I want to get rid of root, and put back to 100% factory condition including this new 4.1 JB update. What's the easiest way to do this?

I can't update, recovery turns on instead
Thanks for the help. An FYI for anybody else wondering, if you have the root66 root injected rom on your phone the OTA will work and install. I just did it, weird thing is initially it said it failed but when I rebooted I have 4.1.1 and google now. Restored root using root keeper, easy process overall.:good:

I searched and couldn't find an answer, maybe I'm just a bad searcher. I'm using the rt66 root injected stock rom and this morning I checked "software update" under "about phone" and it started downloading a 330+ mb file. I'm assuming this is the JB update that was just released, will it install correctly or should I stop the download? I don't want to brick my phone and I can wait until I'm home to update. Thanks.

I've been told that its fine too do it, youll just lose root access, but mine had failed when I was rooted, so I just odined back to stock. Also, its recommended that you do a factory reset after the update. Had problems with Wifi calling myself, before I performed a Factory Reset. The root66 file for JB should be up soon. Its says uploading

If you update via Kies and then do a factory reset, you should get what you're looking for.
Completely stock, no root.
Try it out.
OTAs have always worked for me while rooted, but many people report otherwise.

Oh and imo kies sucks! Most others agree.
But to each his own. I cant be much help for kies problems though just fyi.
I really just think all other methods are much more reliable.

I agree, Kies does suck, but it's the only way I've found to update and keep the ROM completely stock if the OTA fails. It updates via download mode, so it shouldn't matter if you're rooted, or even if you have a custom recovery.
I tried updating to JB using the OTA this morning, and it failed, but Kies worked fine.
Thsts whst the full fw Im hosting is for. You can flash it via odin if the ota fails. Just a better way imo. Glad you got it regardless though!

[Q] T-Mobile Update service???

Got a notification this morning that there is a new software update available for me. I have looked high and low and haven't been able to find anything. I would just install it and see what it is but i am rooted and don't want to screw up my phone. Currently running 4.1.1 stock, but I cannot find anything anwyhere about a new update being installed.
Anyone seeing this also? If so, what is it?
Don't know why you are just getting this - its been out since Jan. I think. It's just a little update. Nothing major. Still 4.1.1 Check the thread in development section to install update with root using Odin.

This morning, I woke up to this same notice. I'm running stock unrooted 4.1.1. I put it on hold until I could find out what it was.
(I really want to root this thing but only have a MAC and have never used Odin to root a phone.)
A modem update that's all

I would suggest using mobile Odin. That's how I do it. You just need an app to unzip the rom download, which then gives you a tar file. Do not unzip the tar file. That's the format mobile Odin uses.

If Odin is available for a Mac the Root66 method is very easy - I used Odin and Root66 the first time I rooted any Android device and it went well.

I Agree I Got That Notification In Jan Too Was Really Hyped But Found Out It Was Nothing Major. TMobile Is A RealPain When It Comes Too Releasing Updates Don't Know Why 4.1.2 Hasn't Started Rolling Out. It's Gonna Take Forever To Get 4.2 Lets Not Even Think About The Wait For 5.0.
