Blank Screen of Death Fix - HTC One X

DOING THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARANTY! ONLY DO THIS IS YOU'VE ALREADEY VOIDED IT OR CAN'T TAKE YOUR PHONE TO HTC'S SERVICE
This isn't a 100% chance fix - but its the best I could do against that problem. I've gone from a 3 minute BSOD to a 3 day clean HTC One X.
After searching a lot trying to fix my phone I've reached the conclusion that this may be a voltage abnormality. Try following these steps in order to get it working.
What I've done:
Root and install CWM on your phone
Install JB's port to HOX (you may use this guide)
Repack ncx 1.29's kernel (THE ONE WITH 414Mhz GPU!) to JB port using this tool
Install the kernel
By now it should be a lot better, but some may still experience flickering or even our BSODS. If so, try downloading System Tuner from the market and play a little bit with the voltages (using the +25/-25mA buttons). Don't set them too high.

Man, I think I have the same problem with the screen as you. What is your progress?
Could you please explain the suggested solution in more detail. I have already
1) unlocked the bootloader through htcdev;
2) installed CWM;
3) installed SuperSU;
After that I tried to solve the BSOD issue by flashing the ARHD 9.7.2 custom rom, but it has the same kernel version as my updated stock one, i.e. 2.6.39.4. And it still gives me a hard time. I have also noticed it is a voltage issue, because when charging there is no BSOD at all.
I like HTC Sense and would like to keep it. Is there a way to solve the BSOD issue alongside with keeping HTC sense?
Thank you in advance for you help.

Many Thanks
Thanks bro, 24 hours now with out BSOD. took me whole night to figure out what you wanted me to do as i am a novice in rooting in fact did it for the first time . had to increase the voltage +50 to make the phone stable. if i want to increase more how high can i go???
i sent my phone to htc last month and they returned the phone unfixed (sent a letter with it saying part no longer available) but with two additional problem. ear piece speaker stopped working and vibrator noise got funny. i think they opened the phone and didn't closed it properly.

I think I have managed to replicate the procedure. The only difference that I made is that I used ARHD 9.7.2. ROM, and not the JB port. The distortions and BSODs became less frequent, but are still there. I increased the voltage by 75 and turned off GPU rendering. Will see how this turns out.
What is the highest possible increase or decrease in voltage?

I used to get BSODs because of faux kernel :/ I think the OCed gpu doesn't work on my hox.

The link of the ncx kernel is worng, it leads to the jb installation guide... can someone give me the correct link plz.
thx

Any news for your HOX.
I got the same problem. I unlocked the phone, so not covered by warranty, hv to repair it by myself.

And if youve got the BSOD just how had you suppose to do all that when you cant see any thing ?

OTA Update: FroydVillain 1.2.2 "GPS really needs a kick in the nuts"
VillainROM Updater app finally makes a return to the FroydVillain platform.
New in this update:
•Framework fixes for the GPSLocatorService that fix an issue causing a hang/crash when GPS was obtaining initial fix and location update.
•CPUSpeed no longer supports a screen off profile. See below for details.
•Updated lib_htcril.so to improve GSM switching, -should- also fix the people experiencing GPS+GSM not working.
•Kernel updated to fix some regression bugs in the USB stack, ARM code issues and to prevent the camera app clogging the IO bus.
•All the different OC kernels are now in the OTA app, just enable experimental updates to see them.
This OTA update clears the dalvik cache, as there are updates to the framework, so naturally your phone will take longer to boot.
We no longer support the use of a screen off profile with the interactive governor. It's really not needed. While it may make some difference to battery longevity, the benefits far outweigh the downsides. We're talking -maximum- a loss of an hour, over using a screen off profile. However you get the added benefits of:
Being able to use anything with the screen off without losing performance. For example phone calls, listening to music, etc.
Time for a brave new world of thinking, folks. Get used to the idea that it's better for the governor to accomplish a task as quickly as possible, then clock back down.
The other switch in thinking, is this. It's time we stop trying to work around whatever bull**** problem that apps on the market introduce by being buggy, crap or poorly designed. If we find there's an app or a widget that runs your phone at top clock all night, well, start giving the developer ****. We're no longer going to try and work around issues introduced into the OS by bad applications. Developers need to start taking more responsibility or face people not using their apps anymore.
Screen off profiles are a nasty workaround for this problem and it's going to go away, at least in FroydVillain. Your phone's performance should not be at the mercy of whether the screen is on or not. Having many frequencies in the table is a false economy because, and especially with the

[Q] Screen lag/slow reaction problem

Hi guys,
My girlfriend just bought HTC Wildfire S. Unfortunately sometimes there is huge lag when unlocking the phone or answering a call. In other words the screen doesn't react to finger input for 2-3 seconds, then it unlocks/answers. It is very annoying. As I'm totally out of topic in development on Wildfire S, I am asking you to help me. Did someone had similar problem? I was thinking about changing a kernel or flashing a ROM to fix this issue, but I totally don't know what to choose in terms of stability and Sense interface.
Thanks in advance
It occurs due to the load our old processor take due to sense......... You can try a sense kernel or try an AOSP rom like CM7
Just what I thought. Any kernels worth trying?

If you are using a sense ROM I recommend Dust kernel or Cake kernel. People prefer cake one more because of stability.
And If you are thinking of going for CM7 speed mod kernel is good.

had the same problem after i updated from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5:crying:
if the phone is new i will suggest not to root it..(coz u need to use it for atleast a few months 2 make sure that the one u got is a stable and long lasting onejust 2 be sure)
there is a new ota update available now 4 wfs...try it out as it may sort out the problem..(i cannot as i am rooted & too lazy to unroot it again)
also u can try using 'advanced task killer/memory booster' or any other and customize it to kill running apps at a specific intervals to free up ram and speed up the system..(this may solve the problem in most cases)
also try not to fill up the internal memory:sillyyeah its too less)..and clean up the cache every now and then(easy cache cleaner etc)
these were the few simple,non-root and 'may solve ur problem' solutions..but if u want a 'definitely will solve ur problem' solution then root ur device and flash a kernel that supports overclocking:fingers-crossed:
Try to factory reset that solved my problem

If you're currently on a custom ROM, then you probably just need to tweak your CPU settings. I've given this advice to dozens of folks and they all said it worked for the symptoms you're describing.
If you're not a custom ROM, then you really should be.
Once you can tweak your CPU settings, set it to something like 600/768 (min/max) with the Smartassv2 governor and noop scheduler. I publicly guarantee you that your screen lag will go away (assuming you're not flooding your internal RAM by loading all kinds of useless **** into it )

Try another governor, try a perfamance governor first. Because when phone is in sleep mode for battery saving it slows down CPU and i think those 2-3 seconds is the time when cpu speed up till 600 MHz. On perfomance governor is always on max freq, but don't use it always because phone will use energy fast. If it helps that means this 2-3 sec lag you can solve with trying different governores. if helped press thanks and sorry for my bad english

HTC One X custom rom - Screen Flicker Fix...

Hello everyone one,
I had an international HTC One X locked to the ThreeUK network (1.28). They were rubbish releasing updates namely 1.29.701.11
I get the screen flicker issue, and last night I rooted and installed Revolution HD 9.1.0 (sense 4.1) rom onto my phone.
The phone is soooo much snappier and faster, plus scores 700-800 more on antutu.
My question is, will this custom firmwire update I have done also fix the screen flicker issue and lost memory card data I was experiencing with 1.28 4.0.3??
Thanks.

I'm getting conflicting reports that the screen flicker won't be fixed as I need that specific update and a custom rom will not fix it as it's more to do with the binary and not with the rom side?
Any other ideas ?

Can you reference these conflicting reports?
I firmly believe that the cusotm ROM you have will include the fix (ask the author) but it is fair to say that a few people found the fix didn't work but the majority of handsets were fixed by 1.29.xxx.11.
I cannot reference no. If I find the thread again i'll link it here.
So what's the best route of it being fixed? Maximum brightness?

Hmm, this is what I always wanted to know. Maybe you can shed light on this for me (getting ignored in custom kernel, or CM threads)
The custom kernels are made from the source right? I mean compiled?
Whats the latest one there is? Last time I was on custom kernel there was the official source only from the 0.7 version without the flicker fix.
Or is there already a new source? Or no source needed, they can just hack into the kernel without it?
Also the modded roms, they have their own kernels right? Also a new source with the flicker fix?
Also I didn't have flicker with .11 (got the phone shipped with it) and when I tested custom kernels = flickers, back to stock = no flicker.
On this OTA, it flickers, hoping it will settle, but I can already tell it was faster "fixed" for me on the .11
Maybe there was the data, which will it have to gather from new on as I am now after RUU etc.
I'm having the exact same issue on CM10. I know it's still an alpha build, so I'm willing to wait. But I've asked one of the developers directly, but he/she won't respond.
It is a big problem for some of us, yet it's being ignored. That alone doesn't sit right with me. Does that mean that it's not easy to fix or that it's not in the pipeline (yet)?

You know, I wouldn't mind the flickering as much I am now, if someone of them would at least say something to it. Like "not possible" or "working on it" but ignoring the questions just made me abandon CM for now and I am back to stock.

I totally agree! I'm playing with the same idea of going back to the stock ROM, but I truly don't like Sense. But I ike it more than the flickering though.

I hate sense too . Thats why I have most of it deactivated and use Nova launcher. There is even a sense cleaner here in the forum. But I just frozen the aps I don't like. Should help a bit with deactivating most of the sense stuffs.
I would go for CM, but there were few issues, I had with it besides the flickering.
It's been a while, but did anyone have any luck in fixing the screen flickering in CM10?

Using Blackout ICS

I'm new to using a rooted device and installing custom ROMS, and I love it!
I've loaded the latest Blackout ICS version 3.0.0, and am really impressed by how well it works. I immediately noticed that battery life is better than anything I've used previously, always different versions of Gingerbread. So that's a big improvement straight away. As others have highlighted, it's a bit laggy at times, but I overclocked the CPU and it runs much more smoothly. Even just 1.2 GHZ produced a noticeable improvement, and I'm now on just under 1.5 GHz, which I gather is a safe setting. I was worried about this affecting battery life, but if it has it's barely noticeable. I suppose it only runs at the fastest speed when it needs to.
The only problem with the ROM is the auto-brightness, which jumps up and down even in fixed light conditions. Not sure if the developers pick these threads up, but that is really the only issue I've found.
As the DHD seems to be the only device not to be getting an official port of ICS, I'd definitely recommend giving this ROM a try.
With all these other devices getting updates, is it likely that more fully working ICS ports for the DHD will be on the horizon?
Really? You get better battery? I suspect i get a little less battery time...

You should also try AOSPX and Nik Project X. The first one is stock ICS and the second one is ICS with Sense 4.0. I tried both of em and they work flawlessly on my DHD.
Haven't tried Blackout yet because I saw in the thread that there were still quite a few issues to be solved.

Hmm, haven't really paid attention to that (I 'm mostly on WIFI). I 'll do a speedtest when I get the chance.
Edit: Did a quick test and I 'm getting 3,6Mb down / 1,6Mb up (inside a server room right now so not the best connection). Seems quite normal for my network (7,2Mb is max speed I can get from my provider). Of course the max HSDPA speed is alot higher but that 's something I cannot test.
Hi,
I've just installed, and recovered my apps, as i've wiped battery calibration i cannot talk about it, but OC is excellent. Even in default frequency the desktop turns without any lags, but as you mentionned, sometime there are some lags (typing on keyboard for instance) but i guess it's linked to the OC profile changing , try in performance instead of on demand, this should solve that.
Regarding the brightness i agree , it seems it change on "i don't know which parameter" from bright to low brightness.. so i've installed Bright day app to set the brightness along the day at low value and i've set on the main desktop the brightness widget to up from system parameters to push it up when i need, then bright day will recover the setting after a while..

So after few days of testing here are my feelings :
Takeing account of deamon set to 1,2Ghz, i can still reach 1d and half near 2days without charging , with a light use :
Allways connected to network though HSDPA (as i take train it often check the network to change the connected cell)
Playing 20-30min 3times a days to Pirates of carabean (3D game multiplayer so connecting to the network)
Surfing a bit
no music
no video
With an harder use i reached 1d wake up to sleep:
still same network condition
playing double time at least (1 to 1,5h 3times a days)
Surfing more (1h)
no music an no video
using battery eater apps (windguru) a bit
to resume my feeling on battery is excelent, i've noticed a light improvement on idle battery drop, a bit accelerated over time (due certainly to used app remaining processes.
Let's go now to the issue i've noticed :
-Back tactil button doesn't work on phone screen while it works everywhere else
-Using smoth rosie to supersmooth show a light display trouble when reducing the app drawer windows (doubling the reducing animation)
-Light keyboard trouble doubling the A letter some time (like if the touchscreen has been typed twice when its not the case)
-blackout tweak shortcut from top task bar doesn't linked (need to go through the app drawer to access it)
-Folder creation missing from widget/app shortcut addition screen (or i didn't found it) , i use the moving app on another icon to create it (i don't know if it's the ICS new way of creating folder on desktop)
The plus i've found (don't know if it's an ICS feature) : create a folder in the lower task bar : can jump from 4 shortcut to full app contained in your phone accessible from the locked screen : I loved that !
The overall impression is really great and for an old phone that "doesn't give a good experience of ICS" following HTC, i feel this ROM fullfill my expectation from ICS on my Desire HD !
Many thanks to the Blackout team !

Yes. Some can't send at all. Some have data drop in and out while sending and some have no issues. Seems weird to me since the hardware is supposed to be the same for the most part. I think apn and radio combo has the most to do with it.

Love this ROM...
This ROM would be my daily driver if the Wifi hot-spot worked. Has anyone found a work-around or fix? Wifi Tether didn't work either btw. I know it's WIP by the devs but they said it wasn't a major priority for them (Boooooo lol) Fingers crossed for v3.2
As noticed recently in the official thread, i've also noticed the magical battery jumps, i first guessed it was linked to the battery calibration wipe i've done before to flash the Blackout3.0 rom, but i can sometime still see this trouble also.
It happen even phone is in use but every time inbetween 30 and 5 percent of battery left. it goes down to low then readjust it to an higher value without any reason.
The phenomen come back lately less often, but maybe devs can check this out. I'm running on a SFR Desire HD recognized as an incredible S on the 3.0 rom.

[Q] Are the relatively newer ROMS too heavy for Desire Z ?

Hi guys,
I have question regarding my HTC Desire Z .. Ever since I rooted the phone about 1.5 years ago, and have been trying out the newer ROMs, I've slowly realized that my phone is getting slower, slower, and slower .. I'm currently using a Jellybean ROM, and its *extremely* slow ! I mean, at times I receive a call, and the ringer rings about 5-6 times, and during all this time, the phone doesn't have the juice to switch to the phone app, so that I can 'accept' the call ! Ultimately the call disconnects itself!
A friend recently suggested to me that maybe the newer ROMs are two powerful for my phone, and that I need to move to an older Android version ROM, which my Desire Z CAN handle, without this much lag !
Also, I hardly have any apps installed on my phone at all, in an attempt to keep the load low .. I also use 'Advance Task Killer' regularly to kill background apps, but it doesn't really improve anything ..
What can I do to improve the speed of my phone !? I really pisses me off to see a 10-15 second lag when I call someone !
Get rid of the task killer first of all...

I dont think it will make any difference .. I've tried many different ROMs, and its always the same condition with all ... Sometimes my phone become *so* unresponsive that I just feel like smashing it on the ground ! (When I really get upset!)
Also, on another note, when I open Advanced Task Killer, it shows me the amount of free RAM on the top .. Most of the times this value is between 60 MB ~ 100 MB, and sometimes between 100 MB ~ 140 MB .. If never seen this value go above 135 MB or so ... And Desire Z is supposed to have 512 MB of RAM

If I do that, it will initially be fast .. Even if I install all my apps on the first day, it will still be okay in terms of speed ... But give it a week, it eventually becomes slow .. very slow! .. And the odd thing is, during this week, I don't necessary install/uninstall anything .. the phone just ****s itself in somehow ... And then from then on, it remains slow, no matter what ...
I open Google Maps, takes like 15 seconds to open .. takes another 60 seconds to go to Google Navigation, and then further lags after that ..
Basically there's a lag in *everything* !
Is there a way I can see what is slowing down the phone ?!
Also, is it true or not whether an older phone, such as Desire Z, can or cannot handle a relatively newer Android version ROM ? Maybe this is why the latest Android versions are NOT officially available for phones many times, because the manufacturer knows the device cannot handle that newer Android version ?
If your rom supports ext partitions, make sure all of yours are formatted that way. Chances are you have sopme bad apps, a logcat may hedlp determin abused wake locks or memory leaks. Also you can try downloading battery batt stats or watchdog for more infor

Hi guys,
I have question regarding my HTC Desire Z ..
I really pisses me off to see a 10-15 second lag when I call someone !

i had a play with elitemod ics the other day & it was defiantly slower than the GB version... it was using more or less double the ram which i suspect is the real problem.....
Yes its true the newer versions are more hungry. We touched on it in one of the andromadus threads recently. I believe the issue to be the cpu. The nexus s has the same amount of ram as us and although its not as good on there as the gnex, its still good. Having bumped my lower cpu limit a notch, its much better. I also tried a few upper limits and found that 1200 to be best as it suffers with animation under that.
But then all dz's are different. Stay on your rom and bump up the lower limits a few clicks and let us know what you think.

I've noticed the slowdowns happening with negligible CPU load and no memory constraints. I suspect a problem with the kernel. At the times it happens, the phone seems to be just doing *nothing*.

Is there any other thing I can try apart from logcat ? I installed Watchdog a few hours ago, but so far it hasn't reported anything out of the way ..
What does have ext partitions do ? How does that speed up the OS ?
Also, I'm probably going to be re-flashing another ROM soon, so please suggest me a ROM ... I'm looking for maximum longterm stability and responsiveness here, so even if a ROM isn't the newest or the most feature-filled, I can still try it out ..
And what is Superwipe (read it in another thread) ?
Normally, when I restore stuff after installing a ROM, I download a fresh copy of the app from the Store, and only restore the app's data using titanium .. is this okay ?
For the sake of starting fresh, flash the ext 4 recovery and flash mimicry as your rom. Read all suggestions in the first few post on mimicry, to flash 4ext I made a thread, you'll find it the first page or so in the general section (dzhboot or something)
Mimicry is one of the best made best performing full featured ics roms for our phones, partitioning everything to 4ext (easily done through recovery) will make it far better. Other bonus tweaks will be added in.
There (in my opinion) are beter performing gingerbread roms, but I do sugest mimicry as it is amazing and the dev has laid out a wealth of knowledge in the first few posts

I'm assuming you're referring to this thread: http://www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714187
Well this is the ROM I'm currently using, which I flashed about 2 months ago, which is giving me all these performance issues ..
I went through the first few pages, but I didn't find any instructions on 4EXT ... The only thing I found was in the OP's FAQ in the start, which said that you should apply ext by downloading 4ext from Play Store, if you get lags ..
Anywhere else I can look ?
Look in general section, somewhere in the first page I posted a thread called dzhboot on g2 or something to that extent, one of the first few posts I eplain how to flash 4ext recovery.
One of the fastest roms I have used is elitemod cm7, maybe try that

I have been wondering the same as the OP. I have been using andromadus and andromadus mimicry roms for the past few month. I tired cm9 unofficial but it was no different to mimicry in terms of lag. Currently on flinny's jb beta http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005136. Lag is not terrible but too often I am looking at a white screen waiting for something to happen.
I often experience lags opening apps like phone and browser (any browser). Phone hanging when trying to make a call is particularly annoying because my wife asks "why is your phone so ****?"
I would love to have a really smooth experience like others report but even with a fresh wipe I seem to have trouble. When I try to reduce the process limit i still seem to have too many processes running. What should i look for in logcat in terms of tracking down the problem?
Maybe 4ext will sort it out? I am very loathe to go back to a cm7 rom.
Ext4 worked really well for me to speed up my phone.. I highly recommend it.

It's gotta be a certain app your installing thats hogging all your memory, I been running mimicry ever since blk released it n have had very few slowdowns.
Never had a problem receiving/making calls 'wiping' is not the same as 'superwiping' its different then just the name, I suggest you do some reading up before flashing any more roms.

i superwipe, and i've been flashing roms since the g1. I am not seeing any particular process hogging resources. this current jb beta is pretty good but still get some lagging at random.
if that were the case I would love to try and find out what it is.
it seems to me that a minority of users report lags in rom threads and are dismissed without ever really getting to the root of the problem.
I would really like to try and get to the bottom of it. I am going to move to ext4 but if there are other troubleshooting steps to take I am all ears.
Ext4 alone will make a huge difference, and most of the rest of the slow downs will be do to apps/running services which can be seen with a logcat what is continually trying to use cpu resources
If only a minority report slowdowns then either that minority has a different idea of how the phone should run/ they use the phone in a completley different way/ or have different settings and apps then most have.
