Hi all
I acquired my Gnexus about a month ago, and the nexus has lived up to its name, being the predecessor of my nexus s. However, a few weeks ago a very strange bug has began manifesting itself. Whenever my phone was not in silent mode, a ringtone would keep playing, over and over again, while there were no incoming notifications. In fact the offending ringtone in question isn't even set to anything in my system sounds! This is particularly strange because even when I used TiBU to freeze just about any sound-making app that could have been causing this (alarm apps, music apps etc) the strange sound continues.
Here is a video of what I am talking about. You may need to crank up volume a little bit to hear it, but it's definitely there, and recurring incessantly. I showed my notification bar and running apps, as I have no idea what could be causing it. I'm running stock JRO0C rooted, with unlocked bootloader. This did not happen before my bootloader was unlocked, and even after that I did not recall it happening for a long time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7r-Deeu6ME&feature=youtube_gdata_player
The strange thing is, even after a full wipe/factory reset via cwm and flashing over another rom (bigxie's stock, rooted JRO0C with busybox preinstalled), the problem persisted, on my brand new rom with no apps installed! I really have no idea what's going on, is this going on at system level? I did try formatting /system in cwm but that made it unable to boot past the google logo, strangely, so I had to revert to an old cwm backup.
If anyone could enlighten me on any solutions or reasons causing this, I'd be mightly grateful. The sound, and most of all not knowing the reason behind it and how I could possibly absolve it, has been driving me nuts, it really is such a strange and inexplicable problem, not knowing why is so confounding, even with all your knowledge and experience of android!

Stock kernel? I recall this being an issue with the CM7 build for the Fascinate, and was due to a kernel bug. Outside of that, I couldn't tell you where to begin.

Yep, stock just about everything, only rooted. I used the nexus toolkit to install though, and I'm not sure if that actually flashes an insecure boot.img or not, so might that be the problem?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I don't think the insecure about image would cause a phantom ringtone or others would have reported by now. Sounds like something is misfiring. I'd seek greater knowledge of how to identify the issue (given that you have root access) from one of the much more experienced folks on XDA.

What's that? Only game I have is mass effect infiltrator (thank you 25c sale) lol. I'm pretty sure it's a ringtone sound but I can't for the life of me identify it since I don't use it for any of my volume ringtones!
I might have to relock my bootloader again when I have the time to backup everything on internal memory, because this wasn't present when my bl was locked on purchase.

The sound is bloody annoying though.

Isn't that the battery low notification? Perhaps check your battery and any app and setting that could affect the sounds. Setcpu, system settings, pull battery. That is all I can think of.

Oh and try turning NFC off. And try another battery if possible. Battery chip could be borked and telling system low on battery.
...
It's your NFC chip alert (as if it's trying to communicate with another NFC device). Mine does the same thing if I put my phone on my wallet.
Yep sounds like NFC, coupled with the fact that you randomly have your phone sitting on a wallet?.... Either a jolly good trolling, or you have a solution. Post a video of your phone doing that without a wallet touching it and/or NFC turned off in settings.

Yeah, next time I'll listen to the embedded file in the OP. Definitely your NFC trying to read something with an NFC tag in your wallet. Happened to me when my military ID got too close while screen was unlocked.

Is voodoo louder supposed to work on our phones?
Its supposedly for samsung S2, which, ours is a member of that "family", yet, when I try to install/buy it, It installs, it does its "diagnostics", says everything is ok, but when I try to "buy" it, the app errors out every time; I've uninstalled, reinstalled, cleared data, done everything, but still get an error when trying to complete the install/purchase.
thanks!

Are you using the new gunslinger kernel? And are you rooted? If you no to either one of those then that's the problem but other than that I've have no idea

yes, on gunslinger 1.4.1, and of course I am rooted..
Well Voodoo Louder Setup Fine For Me The First Time And Ive Had No Problems Since! Now... This Is Only My Opinion But Honestly I Cant Really Tell Any Significant Difference In The Sound Even Trying Different Settings Made No Real Differences. So I Kinda So No Need In It Unless Im Doing Something Wrong.

I asked Supercurio (creator of VooDoo sound mod) if he was going to support our phones, and he said no.
https://twitter.com/#!/supercurio/statuses/119217721954148352
EDIT: this was awhile back, so he may he reconsidered since then.
It may not be what you want however, I have been using Volume+ without issue. There is a free version to try and see if you like it.
yeah, I have the full version of volume +; doesn't play well with a lot of the roms for this phone, especially if they have DSP baked in..
thanks for everyones input!
Im running into the same problems you are...Im going to email supercurio and see whats up because I loved voodoo control when I had it on og epic. in the apps op it says that our phone is supported...I read that another guy with our phone purchased it with no problems. It really is puzzling my as to why we are having issues. im on xplod rom with latest rogue kernal supporting voodoo..please keep this going, i would love to get an answer for this.
I've used it on 2 roms already with gunslinger and haven't had any issues. Sound is definitely improved while using headphones.

I've been having the same issue (unable to purchase IAP via Market). I emailed supercurio about it and he said it's a Google issue, and there's nothing he can do about it.
I tried again today and it's still not getting past the "Authorizing Payment" message. But I looked at my bank account, and they've taken $1.35 out 5 times, and put it back 5 times!
still doesn't work for me either, and dev doesn't respond..

I had that same problem was charged 3 times trying kept failing then I tried one more time billing to sprint account and it worked. Then came using it, it's not much better and then there's the annoying notification icon I checked all over in the options no where to remove it. Uninstalled it not even worth the trouble.
For those having issues buying it, supercurio has apparently released an update to the app that should fix this issue.

I had no issues buying it today. However the entire thing refuses to work properly. every 5 Seconds it resets my volume to low. had to uninstall the app to even play music.
Like everyone else, I wish voodoo sound was ported. Need a DAC
Don't know how come you guys are having so many issues, but I've been using this for quite some time now with much success. It definitely makes it louder and adds a little punch to it. I'm currently testing it in conjunction with DSP manager to see if they can play nice together. So far so good.
it wouldnt work for me either on gunslinger, i updated to hitman and it works fine
Hi all,
I have a fairly frequent issue with my Glide Captivate. Unfortunately too frequently, when I turn it on, the network is disabled (O with slash through it), most widgets say "Loading Widget..." the slide down status menu shows nothing (well except the Wifi / BT / GPS toggles.) and "USB Connected" if it is. Nothing else. The phone gets incredibly hot, and near as I can tell sucks the battery. The screen often won't unlock - it will just light up the 4 soft buttons on the bottom (menu, home, etc). When I CAN get on it, I get frequent "Sorry! Process system is not respoding"
Attempting to go through System / Manage Applications - usually about a minute in the screen will blank for a minute then go back to the lock screen.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hey i had the same issue for months with my glide. I bought it outright from rogers and was just running it stock. Drove me nuts exchanged the phone 3 times. Finally narrowed it down to the media scanner/sd card issue. The scanner would run a few times and then reboot the phone. I tried booting it without the sd card in and booted up fine. Tried a dew diff sd cards and seem to have found one that works, but it would happen once every few weeks for me. Ive looked it up on the forums its that common problem with samsung phones. Pain in the butt. Cant remember if you said you were rooted id recommend trying that im too chicken myself. Happens on my sgs2 also.

I have also this issue once in a while, its very annoying, I think that if we could have a AOSP rom that would fix it since samsung polluted their rom so much. Maybe if we get lucky, with the ICS/JB update that issue will be gone. I have also another issue, the phone randomly turns "off" and becomes really hot, it depends on how long it takes for me to realize, but most of the time, it has drained my battery to near death. I don't think those are hardware related issues, but more on the software side since its not AOSP.
Does the temperature rise when it's charging? Because that happens to my phone too. If you have the voltage control, try lowering the max cpu use to lower the temperature a little bit.

Hello and thank you in advance to all. I have a t989,
I run AOKP Galaxysbean V_12
KKO Kernel Governor is Smartass V2 and I/O is deadline
UVLI4 Radio
Problem: I know for a fact this is not a hardware problem, because I have went through 3 phone replacements because of stupidity and learning how to root phone, flash roms, yada, yada, etc. And with each of these phones this persistent problem occurs where all of the sudden at any given time, I will go to make a call and nothing. I can't hear the ring of another person's number, my voicemail, etc. The person does get the call, and when they answer, I still cannot hear them, and they cannot hear me.
Resolution: Ways I have fixed this before are with the first and second phone I flashed over a new radio, (previously UVLE1, UVLH1, 4G Blaze) and it fixed the calling upon reboot. Also I had flashed custom roms, or restored previous Nandroid backups and it worked again. (Little annoying doing this every 3 or 4 days. Though today, this happened with my newest phone, and flashing a radio did not work nor did restoring a Nandroid. This time I had to flash a new custom rom, then it worked. Then I flashed back over the Nandroid and it still works as of now.
Question: Could this be because of the kernel? Or the rom?

same here
Me and my wife have the same issues. We both have GS2s but hers is stock unrooted and mine is running CM10.1. Been dealing with Tmobile for months without success, swapping out cut down on how often its happening but did not fix it. Tmobile is stumped, very annoyed by this issue.
Not sure what's causing the problem but it seems jellybean 4.2 has fixed this issue. Try flashing AOKP 4.2 and make sure noise suppression is enabled and call this number 9143388802. The third option is an echo test and fourth option let's you record a playback to listen to how you sound. If you sound normal and people are still complaining then its their phone.

I've come to the conclusion that its a rom problem because for me it happens with only certain roms. Ive tried all the rom kernel combinations and different radios but the only fix I've found is to retire that particular rom, no matter how good it is. Smoothness aint gonna get the cops or the fireman to your house. The only roms that have worked for me as far as call quality are, for some reason all of TheLastSidekick's Kangs, Darkside evolution 3, Sky Jellybean, Rushing's Bulletproof, and both of the 10.1 variants we have. The strange thing is I can't recall any call quality issue's when flashing roms from the Skyrocket thread. For instance I get the worst call quality ever using Jedi Jelly, but I'm crystal clear using Embryo from the Skyrockets thread, so much so I wont even try our version of the same rom.
I blame T-Mobile network. This would happen to me all the way back to my old flip phones. Every other call or so would do this. I've always put up with it cuz I like T-Mobile customer service.

I found out with my problem. It was when I tried to make a call to soon. It would do this. As long as I have let the phone load for a minute or two after boot, I haven't had any more problems. My problem may be different from yours tho. Hope this helps.

Just leave me some thanks. Under your phone settings, there should be a noise surrpression box. Make sure it is check marked. Every time I do that people have said I sound better. What do you want to do? Change it back to custom rom? P.S. ALWAYS MAKE A NANDROID BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING.. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS!.. Google will solve many questions too. If nothing helps or you need to be walked through some processes, message me.

Hi,
History:
I have a problem with my Nexus. It randomly reboots. Nothing seems to help.
It started after a few months after I was rooted on CyanogenMod 10.0. In 3 days, it quickly escalated to a reboot every 10 minutes on average.
A factory reset (without user apps installed on it) on CynogenMod reduced the frequency (every hour?), but didn't eliminate it.
Unrooting to stock Jellybean 4.1.2 seemed fine only in the first week. The problem came back afterwards, and updating to JB 4.2.1 didn't help.
Now, 2 months on stock ROM, I get even more random times. Sometimes it is 2 times a day, sometimes once a week.
Just before it:
I get a metallic screeching noise for 1-2 seconds, and immediately following that, device turns off with a "pang". Although these days I HAVE had situations that the sound came for up to 3 seconds (and the screen freezes), but the phone worked normally afterwards.
What happens:
It randomly reboots. The rebooting is at irregular intervals, whatever i was doing on it (even when not using it).
What happens after:
It takes much, much longer to startup again. It can get stuck at the "Google" logo screen for up to 5min. It doesn't take this long to reboot if I shut it down myself.
Any ideas? What causes this? Is it software or hardware?
Can I even send it for warranty if I cannot reproduce the problem?
I don't want to send it to warranty if I don't have to. I don't want to loose my phone for I don't know how long.

I'm new to this eMMC thing, but according to an app my eMMC Type is V3U00M. To check whether it is buggy or not it needs root, which I don't currently have. If it IS buggy, I don't have a choice but to bring it for warranty right?
No, I have not tried to changed batteries. I don't have other batteries. But can the problem really lie with the battery? Btw, my phone is less than 8 months old.

Well, I am planning to root again. I want to switch back to CyanogenMod 10.1. Lagfix app isn't needed if you can use -discard mount option right? How to use either, if let's say I'm on CyanogenMod. This is also the first time I hear of lagfix and discard mount... :/
Btw, the app i used to check my eMMC Type said that my chip is ok. No brickbug. Are you sure it's buggy?

I might be wrong here, but from what I've read at the link and other xda posts (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029246), the V3U00M chip is not buggy (in the sense that it's stable for rooting and using the -discard command), but it does give slowdowns. I do have horrible slowdowns, so thanks for that solution I didn't know existed. However, this doesn't solve my random reboot problem at all...
No one else got any solid way to find out the source of the problem?

Same as you man...
I'm seriously considering throwing my phone to the garbage. I don't like iPhones, but google is really pushing me into it with this crappy piece of phone. Is so frustrating to have these rebooting issues, I've tried everything, from wipe to factory reset, back to stock, flash custom ROMS and KERNELS, turning location access off, uninstalling all apps/widgets that might interfere, and every single "solution" it's out there, and STILL I'M HAVING THESE DAMN REBOOTS!
Now it's even worse, I can't even transfer files to my phone anymore because, guess what... IT REBOOTS! everytime I transfer ANY KIND of file.
The only thing that seems to work for a while is reformatting and start from scratch. I've done that like 3 times already. But still after a few weeks the issue reapears... i'm really mad about this, and no one seems to care. Not Google and not even Samsung.
The only interesting thing that i found around the internet is this guy's findings

I read the log on my phone and matches to his... but now the thing is, what do i do with this information? I'm not a programmer o something like that.
Any ideas?
I think your board is faulty. Even so, have you tried disabling SR and raising voltages across the board? Trimming eMMC? Omapflash?

He is saying that you have root you need to install trickster mod from the play store. Open the app and go to specific. Then disable the smart reflex toggles and click the oké button in the upper right corner see if that works. If it doesnt re enable smart reflex and go tot MPU voltages. Next to the words MPU voltages there is a blue plus/minus button. Click that and click the plus one time. Accept it and push again the oke button. The other two things I dont exactly know..

Honestly, if you are getting reboots on a clean stock (including stock kernel) , it's probably a hardware issue.

I tried both things you mentioned with no luck
I'm still searching around for those other things beekay201 mentioned earlier. I found that Omap Flash is a tool for flash roms in binary mode, so that way you can unbrick some phones. Still trying to find out how that can be useful for my case (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242330)

The thing is that after a clean stock install everything works fine for a week or two, that means no random reboots, and i can transfer any kind of file of any size with no problem. Then for some estrange reason (even with no crazy apps installed) starts with a random reboot, after that first reboot i know is time and that i wont be able to transfer files anymore, because it WILL reboot while i'm transfering files. Other thing i have noticed is that around where the camera lens is, get really hot. So I think that the reason it reboots is kernel panic caused by overheating, or the other thing is that my sdcard have some issues when writing files.
Right now i'm using CyanogenMod 10.0.0-maguro with jelly bean 4.1.2 and franco.kernel 3.0.51-nightly-512GPU and i have already tried going back to stock.
how can a I check if my hardware is fine? Is there any app out there?
Thanks!

512GPU? You mean your GPU is overclocked? Maybe try to set your GPU to stock. And if it gets really hot and you have random reboots you can try to over volt with trickster mod.

No, I don't think my GPU is overclocked, that's the full name of the kernel, you say that the kernel automatically puts my GPU to 512?. Anyways i just installed that kernel two days ago just because i thought it might make the reboots go away. I'm having rebooting problems since february (just after upgrading to 4.2.1), so i don't think that the GPU is causing the reboots.

Well if it keeps rebooting you can try to over volt. Maybe that helps.

Hey all!
I haven't had much to post about my Galaxy SIII (Sprint) before till recently.
Lately I have noticed that the screen locks up. Doesn't really seem to correlate with what I am doing, but it just freezes. Sometimes I get a black screen if I start an app and sometimes it is when I pull down the notifications screen. I have seen this described before but no real suggestions on how to fix my device from freezing several times a day.
Today, The phone icon in my lower tray keeps disappearing.
Also, the phone dialed itself (the last number I called) and froze so I couldn't hang up the call! I had to do a battery pull!
Not sure what is going on with my phone, but it is time to call in the experts.
Could it be that I have some sort of malware? Is there even malware for androids? Do any of the programs work to remove it??
Any suggestions would be really appreciated!
Thanks all
Mike
AVG from Google Play works very well, and it's free, and it doesn't run in the background if you set it up that way. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...e&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=google+play+avg

Are you on a custom ROM, or rooted, do you have custom recovery if so which one? Can't really help you by what you posted. Unless you are downloading 3rd party apps that aren't from the play store its probably not malware. Here is a malware app to run though https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lookout

Yeah. +1 on this 100%. Google screens the majority of apps and they're constantly on the look out to make sure apps arent messing with your phone in a way that they shouldn't.
I've said this many times in many threads and I will say it again here.
The best anti-virus is an observant end-user. Just watch what apps you install and what permissions they ask for (for example a game app doesnt need access to your contacts) and you will be good.
So wait, I shouldn't install this file I found off of Google? It's filename is: "totally_not_a_virus.apk"
Sounds legit to me!
But yeah, to OP, it sounds like you might want to do a clean flash of your room and see if that helps.
