hiya, a bit of a random question, but could someone please tell me how much free ram they have on their note 2 on average? (should be checkable in the task manager if the note 2 still has one) i know it has 2gb total ram, but im curious to see how much of that ram is already used and how much i will actually have to play around with.
i know some of you will argue that 'free ram is wasted ram' and 'it doesnt matter since android will auto kill off background apps to give your current app more ram', but to me, these arguments are meaningless/irrelevent. on my current galaxy note, the ram management doesnt suit my usage style. everytime i open the browser, switch out of it and load another app, then re open the browser, all tabs have to reload, which is a sign to me that all the memory used by the browser has been dumped. vice versa as well, as occasionally i will switch out of a game to send a message and then when i switch back to the game, i find out that the memory used by the game has been dumped as well and i have now lost my progress in said game.
TLDR version: basically, what i wanna know is if i were to purchase the note 2 as an upgrade for my note, can i expect to be able to multitask between an app or three without it dumping the memory used by the previous app.
you will have about 1.75gb of ram

im assuming not all of that will be free. ie. on my galaxy note n7000, theres 800mb of the 1gb listed as usable, but on average, only 100-200mb of that is free.

1.75 available to the user, of that about 1.25 free after boot.
I have updated from note 1 to 2 only because of ram, believe me, now works nice and like note 1 should have been, the biggest improvement.
ram is the only thing i am hating galaxy s3 for, if rams is all good on note 2, i will buy

The best ram management is having a program like rom toolbox or fast reboot and configuring android to start to kill apps when they have less than 250mb available.
It will kill when the phone hits the line of possible struggle, so it will be always fast and snappy, and you will have about 1gb of apps in memory to open it fast.

Hi guys, just got mine today and I absolutely love it! I'm coming from a S2.. so this is my first note... When I saw this thread. .I got curious and have been checking my ram.. surprisingly contrary to all the parts above except for the op.. I always see that my ram is used to the extent of 1.55 gigs all the time Is this something I should be concerned about? My phone actually froze a couple of times as well. It could be that since its so new I'm on it continuously and therefore so little ram is available... Please let me know your thoughts..

while on the topic of ram I'm curious if the LTE models have less ram available to them vs the standard hspa model? I wouldnt think there would be much difference, but maybe some

Certainly does! I really don't understand why some people chase free RAM as it is only of any use whilst it is being used.
Coming from a Note 1, with only 1GB of memory, I notice a massive difference in multitasking performance because the OS isn't having to kill tasks in order to launch new ones, meaning switching between them is so much faster.
Android does a very good job of managing available memory, so let it do its job.

Dave

With the note 2 I never had to go to the task manager and manually free the ram (except before launching benchmarks). It just works lol.

Oh noes now Apple will sue your a**! they have that term patented! you better hide boy :silly:
After a day of use from a reboot, I still have between 1Gb and 800Mb of free RAM, without deliberately shutting anything down or changing any developer settings from stock.
Related
I had the Rent A Razr and it ran smooth on stock with many apps running and still had about 450mb of free RAM free. Half the apps on my GNex and at about 300 remaining. Does ICS use more ram than the older systems?
System specs says:
711688kb total
61236 free
151804 inactive
Can someone clarify this a bit more? Just did some math, that's correct.
I dont have a gnex but on my fascinate, ICS 4.0 uses alot more RAM then 2.3.7 GB does.
would also like to know this... looks like we have 600 to 700mb memory... very odd
300mb or so is reserved for the system.

RAM not being used is ram wasted. Really shouldn't worry about how much is being used tbh, only when there is no available ram there is a problem. ICS manages its ram fine and there should never be problems with too little ram. Wouldn't worry yourself over it.

Those missing ram are dedicated to the GPU. Though in cyanogenmod, they modified it so that the GPU will only take what it needs.

Not to say that I wouldn't mind paying full price. Plus 2gigs of ram is not bad, most phones are still playing catch up with the S3, just look at the iphone hahaha

Hah, prepare to be disappointed.
I'm gonna guess it'll just be a minor upgrade...
1.8Ghz Tegra 4/Exynos CPU
Standard 8MP camera
2 or 3GB of RAM
4.8" or 5" 720p SAMOLED++ screen, can't say whether they'll use PenTile or not.
One thing it should have is at least 2GB ddr3 maybe even a 128GB storage model, I'm sure the iphone6 will use these parts and Sammy may as well to, since they wIll be the first to produce them in a mobile chip
It needs a usb port on the top and bottom too.
That would be awesome.

They need to do away with ex_sdcard... what's more external than dropbox? add 32 gb of internal and your good.
Well they probably will make it into quad core since the note 2 will come with the exynos chip. They finally support lte. I would still wait for the next galaxy though.
Blasphemy! A new phone coming out that's faster than my phone?! Omg
6in screen with 4gb would be nice.

I like external storage too. They just need to find a better way to utilize it when having large internal storage as well.
Oh, and this is easily the best phone I've owned. I say that about almost every phone I get, but I was just kidding myself if I ever said it with the EVO 3D and EVO 4G. I haven't had one issue with this phone since I bought it. I would have had to already return any HTC phone for some reason or another and I did with the EVO 3D, 4G, and LTE. 3D had screen separation issues, 4G developed a random spot, and the LTE had a weird lighting problem towards the bottom that looked like a string of LEDs were at the bottom of my screen.
I have the evo lte and was thinking about switching to the sg3, I'm not really a fan of the hardware button though. I can't decide that's why I wanted your opinion, I've used your stuff since the original evo.
Ok so here is my dilemma.... I had an iPhone 5 for a period of two months. I hated it. But the one thing that i liked from ios itself was the way it ran its apps. Whenever i opened any app, it paused whatever else was running in order for the current app to run smoother. Even playing games on my s3 has las lag, while in ios they dont. I dont do much multitasking, so that's why i was wondering if this implement would be possible. I realize things like screen size and other things come into play, but is it something i can fathom at all?

Actually, according to the description in the Play Store (and from personal usage), it does not make your apps take longer to open. I also have great battery life after only using greenify effectively
14 hours battery (till 9%) and 5 hours screen on time
The reason I went to ios. I couldn't stand the little lag issues. :/ if they fix it ill definitely go back to android.

The GS3 can play almost all games except a few high end ones in my experience. Also, the GS3 came out about half a year before the iPhone 5 did. Not only that, the GPU, at least the LTE version with Snapdragon processor is not as powerful as the iPhone 5 GPU. For gaming, not all games will play lag free. The newer, more powerful GPU's in some of the latest high end Android smartphones will do better. I have the Snapdragon 600 with Adreno 320 and it handles games way better than my GS3.
Pros and cons. The GS3 is still a great device. I just wouldn't expect to play all high end games.

I am aware of many reviews mentioning slight lag with the GS4. Although, turning off a lot of the features you don't use will help some. Without rooting you are allowed to disable a lot of the BS. In this regard, I honestly have not seen or noticed any lag or stutter on my HTC One. My htc one really just runs smooth.
The brief time I messed with the GS4 I liked it. I really enjoyed my GS3 and feel I would love the GS4. Both really are great high end smartphones. I don't agree with a lot of people knocking the GS4 for looking so much like the last year's model. It's no different than when Apple goes from the 3 to 3GS or 4 to 4S etc.
I also liked and enjoy my GS3 with stock TouchWiz. I thought about getting the 32GB GS4. I would keep it stock and just disable as much garbage as I could. But, I am leaning towards saying screw all the BS and get the Google Edition. Although I would love to use the Multi Screen Feature I would rather get updates straight from Google and not wait for my carrier to push my bug fixes or updates half a year later. So it looks like the GS4 Google Edition is in my future.
Both the htc one and GS4 are great devices. Each has pros and cons. Like all devices.

Hello, saw this article about Android 4.5 expected features ( link ) , and the multitasking feature caught my attention. Im about to buy the M8 and was worried whether 2GB ram will be enough for the phone to cope with heavy multi tasking. Other phones like the LG and Sony Z2 are bumping up their RAM.
Any devs have an outlook/opinion on this ?
Thanks!
I doubt really doubt it. the nexus 5 Also has 2 gigs. They are not going to make it obsolete.
Shouldn't put any stock in rumors.

I am sure it will handle it better than the note 2 which only had 2gb of ram. It may slow down performance temporarily but I don't see the phone being unusable especially when not in use. Sure newer phones will always come out but once the "next big thing"comes out the " next next big thing" will be just around the corner. I say get this phone be happy with. And if something comes out which is far superior you can always sell it
